Final Cut Pro X - What's your setup?

I'm running FCPX on my MacBook Air 13 Ultimate and everything runs fine except the background rendering kinda causes my system to chug a little. Whats your setup, I'm curious to know what eveyone's setup is and how is FCPX running on your system?

This is my mid-2010 MBP
I'm not sure what you mean by "chug a little", so just to make sure we're all on the same page:
0) turn background render off (just in case)
1) new project
2) add to storyline a 30 second generator (organic)
3) attach to the generator clip a title, with build in / build out that is also 30 seconds (Continuous)
4) with you left hand Render All (shift+ctrl+R), and with your right hand press Start on your stop watch (very scientific)
5) report back your results
In my case, that's a 10 MINUTE ordeal; which is to say that composting an animated title costs me my sanity.

There have been a lot of recent reports of difficulties sharing to DVD, but haven't been hearing about unreadable disks. Posibly there was an encoding error. Or it could have been bad media (blank disk).
Does it play in your Mac?
What brand of disks are you using?

The floppy drive is a horrible analogy. One could still use the external floppy drive, as you say. But what your analogy is ignoring is that at some point that floppy drive option will disappear as a later OS rolls out and the floppy drive is no longer supported, however the other people I am innvolved in working on a project need me to have a floppy drive to pass along my work.
Yes, I can use FCP7 as I need to for the time being (and will do so) but you can bet that won't be the case for all that long. Eventually the ability to use FCP7 will decline as OS changes etc. In the meantime you can bet that the broadcast and film world is not going to change their delivery specs and requirements simply because Apple decided to change FCP to X and ditch the genuinely PRO features of FCP7. There are too many Avids and other options for them to decide that they will change just because a portion of the professional editing world has been forced into Apple's way doing things. They will simplu say, "Get an Avid . . ."
So the floppy analogy not so accurate.

  • Can Final Cut Pro do what Final Cut Express couldn't?

Recorded monitor screen actions using Snapz Pro movie mode (for tutorials, college course, I'm the professor). Now I need to somehow get a final QuickTime movie output, with as close to the same quality as I had in the original recordings.
Tried using Final Cut Express to put all the Snapz Pro clips together and the final output is blurred and out of focus. Was advised on the Final Cut Express forum, by a very knowledgeable guy (Tom Wolsky), that Express won't work (I found that out) and the only way to go is by using Pro. He advised to make the Snapz Pro recording in Photo-JPEG mode and said Pro would accept this and give me a good shape QuickTime output.
Question: Before I invest in Pro (on a limited budget and just purchased Express) I'd like to be certain I can do what I'm hoping to do.
Any help of this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

FCP will do this. I have recorded several tutorials using SNAPZ Pro and edited them with FCP just fine. I used a neat tip that made it easy in FCP 5:

But I don't think you need that with FCP 6.

  • Final Cut Express 4 what's your feedback?

Ok, it just came out today, with AVCHD support! Please report your experiences.

There are less LiveType goodies, compared to FCE 3.0 and 3.5. We had a few DVDs to carry all the goodies—now we've just got one DVD. If this is your first version of FCE, you won't enjoy a lot of the LiveType media that previous versions had. But if you are upgrading, you can still install the LiveType media from your previous version disks, then go into LiveType's preferences and add the data from the old version.
I like the new version of FCE, but I did notice a few shortcuts (things on the right-click menu) that were not longer there. They are still there, but just need to be accessed differently (keyboard shortcut instead of right-click, that sort of thing). It kind of messes up my workflow and I fail to see why Apple had to change this. But, since the features are not actually gone, it's not a huge issue for me. I just don't understand the need for a change in that regard.

  • What camcorders can I buy to support Final cut pro.

My price range is up to $500. I need a good camcorder that is compatible with final cut pro.

Depends what compatible means. THe Canon HV40 is tape based and is still available for $600. That's records to HDV and can be edited natively in FCP.
As to other formats, nearly any camera will work OK with FCP, although I would avoid those that record directly to DVD.
Virtually all other consumer choices today use AVCHD, which needs to be transcoded via Log & Transfer. Here is a list from Apple that is a few years old. Many of these models are no longer on the market, but you can find their nearest equivalent. One camera that isn't on the list are those made by GoPro. If you're active in sports like skiing, surfing, or biking and want to record action, look into their equipment.
    Good luck.

  • Camera for final cut pro

    Hi
I have about £2000 UK pounds to spend on a video camera for producing footage to be edited in Final Cut pro.
What is the best type of camera to get for quality and ease of importing and editing?
Not sure between tape and hard disk etc.
    Thanks

I would agree withthe poster 'G' above that it depends on what you want to do. I would certainly follow his advice.
Here's what I did and what I have no done.
    I JUST bought a brand new PANASONIC AG-HVX-200 because I want :
    * 4:2:2 colour space so i can get more out of the colour correction tools I have such as COLOR.app and coloritsa etc (HDV doesn' cut it for me at the moment). I would highly recommend this camera!.
    • I want the 720P/25 and a 1080P/25 with a codec that was not MPEG2 (such as HDV).SO I now have DVCPROHD to use and in a nutshell it is marvellous. I want the CINEA GAMMA and aother functions that I could not imagine on my HVR-Z1P (See below).
LAstly I had purchased a new SONY HVR-Z1P HDV camera 16 months ago for use as 1080i/50 for most of the work I wanted to do. I soon found the restrictions as above in the codec. I was wanted about HDV but pressed ahead.
HDV is a great format for most however I am about to put the hardly used HVR-Z1P on EBAY now that I have the PANASONIc new HVX-200, which if it is in your budget, I would highly recommends - get a 16GB P2 card ad you're set. Works flawlessly with FCP 6.
As poster 'G" points out, you can go to consumer based cameras that will work ok for you but they are restricted in the sense that you "GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR".
ALso AVCHD H.264 based cameras take a great 720P shots for the holiday trip but these are too not to my liking even though my wife has a SONY XACT HD2... which is great to pull out and spray around when you wanna gun and run.
Summary- if you know what you want to do (your goals) and you want to take advantage of FCS 2 and other tools and etc, the camera is a another piece of the toolkit but a VERY importat one. fwiw

  • Copying a video from Youtube to use in Final Cut Pro

I have an old final cut pro that I us for charities and non-profits I think it is version 5.1.7.  I have never had the money to upgrade and now I do not have any disk or material for the program, only what is on my system.  Now the question.  I have a charity that has ask me to pull a video off of Youtube that they cannot find the original.  What is the best way to copy the video from Youtube and download it to my desktop and get the best quality to use in final cut pro.  Thanks for your help.

    Just use OSX:
Command - Shift - 3 will take a full screen snapshot
Command - Shift - 4 will let you draw a rectangle around the portion of screen you want to copy
Command - Control - Shift - 3 will copy the full screen to the clipboard (to be pasted in another app)
Command - Control - Shift - 4 will copy a selectable portion of the screen to the clipboard
Preview is set up to receive clipboard images — just select New from Clipboard from the File menu (or command - N). You can then export in a variety of formats.
Most browsers let you right click on an image and select Save Image As... to any location on your hard drive.

  • Provide Feedback for the Final Cut Pro User Manual and Onscreen Help Here

The Apple documentation team for Final Cut Pro would like to know what you think about the Final Cut Pro 5 Help documentation (available in the Help menu):
    • How often do you use the Final Cut Pro Help? Under what circumstances do you use it most?
    • How do you find what you're looking for in Final Cut Pro Help? For example: table of contents, index, skimming, PDF links, PDF search?
    • What do you like about it most?
    • What is missing?
    • Are there any particular examples of manuals or documentation that you consider to be good models for the Final Cut Pro manual and onscreen help?
    • By what method do you usually learn a new application? For example: provided tutorials and manuals, third-party tutorials or books, training classes?
    • Did you use the Final Cut Pro Getting Started book to familiarize yourself with Final Cut Pro? If so, do you feel the book provided a good introduction to the application?
    • What do you think is the most difficult feature/concept to grasp in Final Cut Pro?
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had with the Final Cut Pro documentation?
    • Do you prefer electronic or print documentation?
    • Are there any other delivery methods or media you think we should explore?
    • What size computer display do you typically use to view the onscreen help? For example: 15-inch, 17-inch, 20-inch, 23-inch, or 30-inch?
    • What resolution is the computer display set to when you view onscreen help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280 x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    • Do you use multiple computer displays?

    • How often do you use the Final Cut Pro Help? Under
what circumstances do you use it most?
Often, I much prefer that to the Manual, though the Search function is very clunky. Search for Nest for example and you'll get about 50 listings for the table of contents and indexes alone, when all I would really want is the explanation of how to actually create a Nest.
    • How do you find what you're looking for in Final
Cut Pro Help? For example: table of contents, index,
    skimming, PDF links, PDF search?
    Search.
    • What do you like about it most?
Ease of use to get through the manual instead of going through the books themselves.
    • What is missing?
Better organization of the search results. Again, if I search Nests, make the first set of results the answers that actually show me how to use the tool, not the 50 times it appears in the table of contents and indexes.
    • Are there any particular examples of manuals or
documentation that you consider to be good models for
the Final Cut Pro manual and onscreen help?
Honestly, Apple's is the best I've seen for the moment.
    • By what method do you usually learn a new
application? For example: provided tutorials and
manuals, third-party tutorials or books, training
    classes?
Just crack the app open and start. Use websites like the Creative Cow for more input and ideas.
    • Did you use the Final Cut Pro Getting Started book
to familiarize yourself with Final Cut Pro? If so, do
you feel the book provided a good introduction to the
    application?
I thought the Tutorial that came with my first copy of FCP (Version 2.0) was outstanding at introducing me to the interface and how FCP operated. I came from Media 100 and in particular, the Log and Capture operation was completely different than what I was used to.
    • What do you think is the most difficult
feature/concept to grasp in Final Cut Pro?
Media Manager. Not sure why it has to be so convoluted. Media 100 was too easy with this one. Select the Sequence to be up-rez'd, set your new format and capture.
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had
with the Final Cut Pro documentation?
Search results using the Help menu.
    • Do you prefer electronic or print documentation?
Actually both. If the electronic search gets too frustrating, I'll pull the print manual out to find what I really need.
    • Are there any other delivery methods or media you
    think we should explore?
Not really. Internet based help is always nice, but I don't keep my FCP workstations connected to the web so that would actually create a bigger hassle for us.
    • What size computer display do you typically use to
view the onscreen help? For example: 15-inch,
    17-inch, 20-inch, 23-inch, or 30-inch?
    17" Powerbook display, 17" 20" and 23" Apple Displays and a 17" Sony Display.
    • What resolution is the computer display set to when
you view onscreen help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280
    x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    Highest resolution for that monitor.
    • Do you use multiple computer displays?
    Yes. 23 & 17" on one G5. 20 & 17" on the 2nd G5. 17" Powerbook
Powerbook G4 17, G5 Dual 2.0, G5 Dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.5) AJA Kona 2 on both G5's, Fibre Channel and SATA arrays in use.

  • Timeline navigation in the newest version of Final Cut Pro.

I have upgraded to the newest version of Final Cut Pro. What happened to the slider at the bottom of the timeline that moves my project on the time line?  It's not there and it's harder to navigate the time line without it.

Have you double clicked on a project to open it in the timeline? If the timeline zoom/appearance controls are missing when you load a project onto the timeline then I would think that either you should delete your prefs or redownload the app.  But wait for someoine with more points than me  to answer b4 you actually redownlaod it.
