Final Cut Project file has become bloated

My Final Cut Project file seems to be growing at an exponential level.  It jumped from 160mb to 367mb after I DELETED a bunch of files to try & reduce the size.  The problem is getting serious.  I try & "save as" or create a new project and drag my essentials into a new project, but then I just get the spinning beach ball.  Any ideas?  My sequence is only about 10 minutes long, working in ProRes422 Proxy files.  Thanks!

Are those figures meant to be Megabytes because most of my projects of around 10 minutes are in the region of 5MB which is roughly equivalent to one JPEG photograph.
Is it actually the FCP Project file or some of the media or render files associated with it?
Are these the type of files you are referring to?
Could you post a screenshot showing the file and its size etc.
Is your problem just a fear of its "size" or has your computer ground to a halt?
How much free space is on your computer's hard drive?

I'm using MacBook Pro with 128GB SSD that has a limited disk space. As we know, when rendering in Project File (User/Movies/Final Cut Projects), it takes huge space and the limited disk space would not be enough for the whole editing.
My question is, Is there any method to get the rendering Projects file saved into an external hard drive which is connected with USB/ Thunderbolt/ Firewire, with huge disk space (eg. 500GB HDD).
Now, new project created in my Mac is automatically saved in (User/Movies/Final Cut Projects) and my Mac has ran out of space to hold the files.
    Thank you.

You have at least 3 different ways to show the project library:
    1) Go to WIndow->Show Project Library
    2) Click the button in bottom left of your window:
    3) Hit the keyboard shortcut (Command-0)
The project library will be shown, occupying the area where the timeline usually is.
Your hard disks will be visible. Click the hard disk where you want the new project to reside and hit Cmd-N to create a new project.

I have a project that crashed on me when I was about to finish it. When I try to reopen Final Cut Pro it wouldn't open until I took the project out of the Final Cut Project folder. Can somebody tell me if this is a problem that has a solution? I cannot go back to the project at all.

If you are using 10.0.3 or above Apple added a backups folder that for a little extra protection in cases like this. If you quite FCPX go to your Final Cut Pro Projects folder. Find the folder that has the project in question. If it has a backups folder there should be a file with a date stamp and .fcpproject extention, that is your back-up. Just move the back-up from that folder one folder up to the place where you deleted CurrentVersion.fcpproject from.  When I have had to do this I haven't renamed the backup but some people to recomend that you rename it to CurrentVersion.fcpproject and it seems to work both ways. Ofcourse it wont work if there is already a CurrenVersion file there you will need to delete that one first.
If you don't have the backups folder or there is nothing in it I am not sure if there is anything that can be done.

Yes, I've done all "the ususal suspects.." repaired permissions, zapped pram, "reintroduced Time Machine to the backup drive by turning it off and on... etc

  • Exporting final cut project

I would appreciate assistance in exporting a final cut project to a dvd to be edited on another computer equiped with final cut by someone else.

First determine if the other person has a version of FCP that will open the project file you'll be providing. If not, you may have to export the project as an XML file.
Next you will ALL video and audio clips as well as any other media that the project contains (LiveType files, Motion files, SoundTrack Pro files, Photoshop files, etc). Unless your project is very, very small, I doubt that all the needed media would fit on one DVD (4.3gb of usable space). You may need to put everything on an external hard drive to deliver it.
I wouldn't worry about transferring any render files. The other person can re-render.

  • Import final cut project

Why can't I import  a Final Cut project? It is on a large USB disc which I'm unable to designate as a SAN disc so I moved it manually. Now FC still can't find it though it's stored in the Movies folder just like everything else, same folder hierarchy and all that?

Have a look at the file structure of my USB disc called Stu's backup.
I'm trying to see the project
called July 19 Vicky Nova, inside the red Final Cut Projects folder which is at the root level of the USB drive. But as you see from the next photo, the Project Library inside Final Cut, the USB disc (Stu's backup) shows but not the files inside. The other disc, Backups 1.8 Tb shows, probably because it has a FireWire connection. Should it be possible to access the project folder on the USB disc?

  • Can't open Final Cut Project

I'm running FCP 5.1.2 on a MBP with Leopard. The project in question was created on the same system with the same version of FCP, but while running Tiger back in 2007.
All project files and media are in the same place on an external FW800 drive, but they will not open.
One project claims to be made on a newer version of Final Cut (false), this most recent one just freezes Final Cut when I try to open it.
    I've tried:
    • opening other versions in the Autosave vault
    • resetting disk permissions on the external drive
    • trashing the FCP preferences file
    • duplicating and renaming the project file
None of the above worked. Other final cut projects will open, but the common thread among the projects that don't seems to be that they were created while the system was running Tiger.
This problem seems fairly common on the discussion boards, but I haven't stumbled upon a solution yet. Has anyone found a solution?

Reconnect the offline media and life should be good.
Still, the best solution is for everyone involved with the project to be using the same version of FCP/Color.

  • OK to keep Final Cut session files on startup disk?

I have all my media on external hard drives. Is it best to also best keep the Final Cut session files on an external drive? I'd like to keep them on the startup disk so that I can use Time Machine to back them up for me. Is that ok?
    Thanks,
    John Link

The system drive has a lot to do. It is accessing OSX including managing the virtual RAM that OSX always has open, accessing the FCP program as well as any widgets, apps, and a multitude of background process. If I can throw the FCP project on another disk, it relieves the drive one more thing. And since FCP is very drive intensive, anything I can do to help may be useful.

  • Final Cut project freezes when opening

I'm trying to open a Final Cut project (project file size is 22mb) on my MacPro, and when the status bar reaches 40% the program freezes. I can successfully open the same project on my MacBook Pro.
The project lives on an external hard drive (2 TB). The entire project, including all assets is 1.5TB. Both computers are running the same operating system and Final Cut 6.0.6. The only difference is the RAM. On my tower I have 5 GB and my laptop has 8, but I don't think this is the issue. I have tried reinstalling the software on my tower, making a new project file on my laptop and setting my scratch disks to the MacPro's desktop. Any help?

You said; "and setting my scratch disks to the MacPro's desktop."
If this means that you are trying to use your system disc for your scatch media, forget it. The system disc has too many other things to do like running the OS, swapping files and running your programs. This will definatly cause problems.

  • Sending Final Cut Project to Another editor

Does anybody know what's the best way to send a Final Cut Project to an editor in another city? I need it to include all the clips, the audio, and the sequence. You're suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
MAC book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Try using Media Manager to completely copy all the project's media to the firewire drive. It's easy to miss imported files or images which might not be in your capture scratch or render folders. Media Manager should make a complete copy of the project for you on another drive, so they'll have access to everything.

  • My final cut project reverted to an earlier version

I made a lot of changes to my final cut project today and saved the changes frequently. I just came back to my computer, opened my project and it looked like I never sat down at my computer today! I am positive I saved my changes, but the project went back to the original project I had when I first opened it up today. Anyone have an idea what happened or what might have happened?
    Thanks

Well.......I don't know if this is right or wrong?
I recently started being concerned about backing-up projects, so this is what I do: put all media and project files on one of my LaCie harddrives.
The new thing I have been doing is coping the project file (.fcp) at the end of the day on my desk top, as my back up. Did this cause the problem and why?
    Thanks

  • Intel and PowerPC Final Cut project compatibility

I have two computers, a laptop and a desktop, that I use with Final Cut Studio. Both run PowerPC chips. If I purchase a new computer with the Intel chipset, will Final Cut projects be able to go back and forth between the Intel and PowerPC computers? I spend quite a bit of time editing on the road with my laptop then get back to the office and copy the project file over to my office computer. When going back on the road, I copy the project file from my office computer and put it back on my laptop so I can keep editing while traveling.
    Thanks!

There is no compatibility issue between PowerPC and Intel as far as Final Cut Pro is concerned. You just have to make sure you have the same version of Final Cut on all machines, because older versions of Final Cut Pro will not open files created in newer versions. You don't have to worry about the processor.

  • Xml tag defaults to Final Cut Pro file

I seem to be noticing that anything that is downloaded onto my Mac with an xml tag, ends up defaulting to a Final Cut Pro file. This has occurred on everything from music files, docs and pics, past and present.
Where and How do i change that (fix/correct) for all current and future files?

    Maxplanar, Thanks!!
never thought to just rename to .mov, it's always the simplest thing! i recently learnt about .dmg to .iso in certain cases, i never thought a simple suffix change like this would be the solution, just assumed FCP quicktime files were FC read only!
Many Thanks for the help, it should all be straightforward from now on!! as straightforward as any typical PAL > NTSC Conversion is anyway!!
    Cheers!

  • HT201109 Why can't I open a final cut project from one computer in another computer?

I'm using Final Cut Pro Trial. Why can't I open a final cut project from one computer in another computer? When I try to open the project on my desktop it doesn't recognize the format. Please help!

I downloaded FCPX trial on my laptop as well as on my desktop. I did some editing on my laptop but I need to get the project I created on my laptop onto my desktop. When I import the project onto my desktop the videos are Red and they say "Missing File."

  • Problems Searching metadata in a Final Cut Project Uploaded to FCS

We had an intern go through some footage that was on our FCS and load it into a Final Cut Pro project. He then went through and cut up the footage, made it an Independent Clip in Final Cut, and then Renamed the clip. He created multiple clips in Final Cut which all link back to the big master clip which is in Final Cut Server.
I then just uploaded the Final Cut Project which then created elements for all of the independent clips that were made in Final Cut. Upon closer inspection of the Final Cut Project in FCS, I noticed that in the elements of that project, it created all of the clips that we made independent. Great....almost. Two problems arose. All of the proxy files for those elements all have the same thumbnail based on the master clip, but do have the In/Out points when looking at the proxy file. Can you get the proxy file just to encode the In/Out points and make appropriate thumbnails?
    Problem 2:
With these elements, when I perform a search with the exact filename of the element in the Final Cut project, it will only show me the Final Cut project. I have to open up that Final Cut project and then look into the Elements Folder of that project. Is there a way to search elements of a Final Cut project where the elements are reference files or metadata of a master clip within Final Cut Server?
If this doesn't make sense, I'll try and re-explain.

Yes, I did, but it doesn't show the element only the project and the master clip. In order to actually find it, I have to double-click the found Final Cut Project and then look into the elements tab. I'm trying now to figure out a way to make a custom lookup in the advanced search parameters that would allow me to only search Elements of a Final Cut Pro Project.
