Final Cut/quicktime dont play sound while other programs do

My video camera records MPGs onto its hard drive. I put these MPGs on a Mac and the videos are fine, but there is no sound when i play the videos in quicktime or final cut pro.
If i play the MPGs in VLC, both the video and sound work on the Mac. When i play the MPGs on a PC, the sound/video work in every program.
I had this problem once before, and someone nearby (i was in a computer lab) fixed the problem for me by clicking or unclicking some option.
Please help - I want to edit the footage, but its hard without sound- thanks!

the audio and video are "muxed" in these MPG's, Final Cut Pro does not work natively with this format.
you need to "demux" the files and/or preferably, transcode to a more edit compliant codec.
try the free MPEG Streamclip application which can do any of this for you

IMovie, Final Cut, Quicktime, online... a different colour in each!

The same video - Photo Jpeg format from a Panasonic LX3 digital camera - looks different in Final Cut, QuickTime and iMovie.
The "gamma shift" problems with FCP are well documented and I don't think I can be bothered to put anymore effort into finding a solution.
My editing projects are simple so maybe iMovie, I thought, would be enough...
But then I open the same video in QuickTime and iMovie and see that in the latter it is considerably darker and more contrasty.
Obviously, if I don't know which version is correct, I can't even begin to adjust the colours and contrast of the video.
Does anyone know where this difference might come from and exactly how I should set my system up so I can get on with editing rather than spending days trying to find information on the internet?
I'm using a calibrated Apple Cinema Display (2.2 gamma, 6500°k) and want to export edited video that can be viewed online via blip.tv.
Someone must have a solution... But I'm getting close to giving up on all this and using Avid or Adobe Premiere.
And one other problem in iMovie: if I try to adjust the exposure of my LX3 video it becomes rapidly desaturated, even black and white.

I haven't tried it yet but I will although I'm still unclear as to what it is supposed to achieve: is it to match my monitor's gamma to FCP output? (I assume this is the case). If so, how does this solve the problem of needing to export a file that will display correctly on other people's machines - Mac and PC -that are either calibrated to, or default to, 2.2 gamma and 6500°K? Sorry if my question is basic but I'm trying to understand this.
I've read the Apple information about FCP using 1.8 gamma and that being the gamma of a broadcast monitor. My problem is that my stuff will never see a broadcast monitor, being entirely destined for the web and I was hoping to be able to set up some sort of simple workflow that took that into account.

Whenever, I have pages open or any other app I press the home button twice, and then I swipe to the right and obtain the menu that allows me to alter brightness or sound. At this point I press play and nothing works. However, once I go back to my youtube page, and press the play button then it works. If anyone could help me that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

you might be able to find it on the mac...
in finder do your username under places then library then application support then MobileSync then Backups
the shortest folder name should be the UDID
of course that assumes it ever made a backup...
if it made more than one there will be some -date-blah on the end...

Please Help...Final Cut Pro X is froze while it was trying to render

I am having horrible luck with Final Cut Pro X, as I was adding an effect to a clip it rendered very slow and finally just froze, so I forced quit FCP and now everytime I re-open FCP it is stuck on the same clip and will not allow me to do anything, its just froze.

Ok I have been trying to read and find other problems going on here, I think format might have a huge amount to do with it. I read that FCX works fine with H.264 but that doesnt seem to be the case.
Most of my work that I do in editing is from Game recordings using the Hauppauge HDPVR and this exports raw in H.264 however I tested an export clip in Quicktime Movie format. Now this takes longer to export but it uploaded into Final Cut. and functioned and didnt crash the program.
The problem also is that the H.264 file is much smaller than a Quicktime file
H.264 file - 65mb
Quicktime file - 182mb
Now the downside here is that I wouldnt be able to import my imovie library - frustrating but not the end of the world.
My next question is, could all my problems be caused just from the H.264 format that Eyetv exports in, and also as Quicktime format seems to work what would be my other options.
Is Finalcut even more selective about what formats work for it than imovie?
If anyone has other suggestions im all ears im not even 100% if I can keep the program if its going to be really problematic in this way but I really want to try and give it a good chance

That is an indication that the Skype extension isn't working properly.<br />
You can force an extension to install, but that doesn't mean that the extension will work, so you need to remove Skype and wait for an update.

As i was installing Final Cut Studio i cancelled it while entering the details, to go to bed. I tried to reopen the installer window and it just comes up with a Terminal Text Window, can anyone help?

It may have half installed the software so dose anyone know if i can reinstall or delete what it has installed?

after using FCS remover run disc repair:
shut down the Mac
Hold the Shift key on keyboard and start up the Mac
The Mac will run the repair tasks it takes 10- 30 minutes, then it will boot up normally
insert the FCS DVD in the drive and install FCS again.

Are the videos that still have sound those in the Videos app, or a different app ? If Videos app then have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound. Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon; press home again to exit the taskbar. Did you use iTunes to convert the videos? If so you shouldn't it doesn't do it right. You should use another program. Use MPEG streamclip it converts it pretty well with sound. http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html

Why freeze Final Cut X 10.0.8 while playing timeline?

i have bought a new iMac 27" to cut with Final Cut X 10.0.8
but I have no performance. When i am playing a clip in the timeline, after one minute the clip freeze and the sound is still playing.
The complete computer is freezing down, after 30-40 sec. and then it is normally to play.
I have installed FXP new, but that solved not my problem.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB

adding to tom's questions - is the media on an external drive? what connection is it using usb3/2/fw? It is alwys good to transcode media to apple pro res for editing. It works smooth as butter.

what do i need to do,its really embarrassing as they are usually the client,who expects it just to work.

More than likely your clients aren't all running the recommended minimum Mac G5 dual 2.0MHZ or Windows 3.0 Intel Pentium D platform required for "unlimited" data rate playback of H.264 HD content. Try limiting your video data rate to something in the 4.0-8.0 Mbps range (2.0-4.0 Mbps for even older, slower machines) and see if clients get smooth playback.

Audio created in Final Cut won't play in iTunes

I created a bunch of audio files in FCP that have the .wav extension. They play fine in Quicktime (and the Finder preview), but not in iTunes.
I''ve tried to convert them in programs like Swtich and xACT, but they won't open in those, either.
According to Switch, these files have "Codec: Extensible Wave Format."
According to the VLC player (in which they do open) they have these details:
Type:                               Audio
Codec:                               pcm
Channels:                     3F2R/LFE
Sample Rate:                     48000
Bits per sample:           24
What to do? Something in Final Cut? Some other program?
I've tried garageband, too, but the audio just comes out silent.

Itunes needs .m4a files. Go to the Share menu in FCP X and choose Export Audio. Choose AAC from the export formats. It should say M4a below the AAC selection in the Export list. Afterward you will need to get the file into your Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music folder to see it in your iTunes library. You might have to import the file into iTunes from within iTunes. I am having problem playing and exporting in final cut pro. I made an animation in maya and used batch render to render a folder of images then imported the folder to final cut pro but it doesn’t play properly in the video window or even when I exported to quicktime. Do u know why?

As the link that Russ posted describes, use quicktime player to open the image sequence and then do a save. Bringing in an image sequence directly into fcp will cause extreme performance problems in my experience.
Describe the setting (pixel dimensions, color space, etc) of the original files. One important question is whether there is an alpha channel associated with the files. You may want to change the codec when you do the save in quicktime player to something more fcp friendly like one of the flavors of prores.

Final Cut why music track sounds badly compressed?

I have a music track that sounds just great if I listen to it under Quick Time Pro, However, that same song simply imported in Final Cut then added to a project sounds like a pumping compressor, destroying the song completely. Why Final Cut cannot simply use it the way it is rather than adding an additional (badly set) audio compressor ?

It wasn't clear to me if you're just playing the project on the timeline or the problem only happens after exporting it? Which could make a difference.
The only way FCPX should change your audio, automatically, is if the settings for Audio are setup in settings under Import
You can check if this has been done on your audio by selecting the audio file in the timeline and checking the Audio Enhancements section - like this screenshot below.
Click on this Audio Analysis button to check any automatic adjustments - and turn them off, if necessary.
If that's not set to anything, then it would have to be a bug of some kind. I've had issues with audio when exporting only (played fine in the timeline)
How are you importing by the way. Does it happen if you just create a new project and drag the file in from Finder straight onto the timeline?
