Final Cut & QuickTime Update

If I run the update to bring me QuickTime 7.1 I understand from a comment on a news article that Pro users need to but a new license, since I own Final Cut Studio I got QuickTime Pro with it.
Is any of this true? Can I then run the update, be current and not have to buy it again?
PowerBook G4 ~ w/2Gb Ram • PowerMac G5 ~ w/4.5 Gb Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Uhhh, I have sort of a red face on this one, folks.
I did run a hardware test on my new RAM. I did test the validity of my hard drives and their directories. I looked into several other items as well.
I didn't find anything.
But then I DID FIND an item in a recent Larry Jordan newsletter about issues related to upgrading from FCP 4.5 to 5.1. One specific item mentioned was that in v5.1 one should not use the "Fastest (linear)" Motion Quailty setting under "Video Processing" pane of the sequence Settings window. The writer of the tip stated that he had consistent trouble with this setting on all of his Macs in his large production house. FCP kept quitting during render. Sound familiar?
Yesterday was the first time I had ever tried to render a sequence using Motion Quality render settings set to "Fastest (linear)."
So I changed that setting back to "Normal" and started the render. Since then that Mac has been running renders flawlessly for some seventeen hours without a cough.
I guess the guy in the LJ newsletter was right.
Sorry to waste everyone's time. It wasn't QT 7.1 trouble. That seems to be giving me no trouble at all.

  • IMovie, Final Cut, Quicktime, online... a different colour in each!

The same video - Photo Jpeg format from a Panasonic LX3 digital camera - looks different in Final Cut, QuickTime and iMovie.
The "gamma shift" problems with FCP are well documented and I don't think I can be bothered to put anymore effort into finding a solution.
My editing projects are simple so maybe iMovie, I thought, would be enough...
But then I open the same video in QuickTime and iMovie and see that in the latter it is considerably darker and more contrasty.
Obviously, if I don't know which version is correct, I can't even begin to adjust the colours and contrast of the video.
Does anyone know where this difference might come from and exactly how I should set my system up so I can get on with editing rather than spending days trying to find information on the internet?
I'm using a calibrated Apple Cinema Display (2.2 gamma, 6500°k) and want to export edited video that can be viewed online via blip.tv.
Someone must have a solution... But I'm getting close to giving up on all this and using Avid or Adobe Premiere.
And one other problem in iMovie: if I try to adjust the exposure of my LX3 video it becomes rapidly desaturated, even black and white.

Yes Kirk, I did see your post, thankyou.
I haven't tried it yet but I will although I'm still unclear as to what it is supposed to achieve: is it to match my monitor's gamma to FCP output? (I assume this is the case). If so, how does this solve the problem of needing to export a file that will display correctly on other people's machines - Mac and PC -that are either calibrated to, or default to, 2.2 gamma and 6500°K? Sorry if my question is basic but I'm trying to understand this.
I've read the Apple information about FCP using 1.8 gamma and that being the gamma of a broadcast monitor. My problem is that my stuff will never see a broadcast monitor, being entirely destined for the web and I was hoping to be able to set up some sort of simple workflow that took that into account.

No, FCP X is a completely different app and everyone has to pay the full price.

  • FINAL CUT SERVER "UPDATE", YES, I said UPDATE!

    Everyone,
I was just playing around on our Final Cut Server and ran a software update. I immediately saw that there were 2 updates: 1 for Final Cut Server and another which involved compressor!
The Final Cut Server update said that it resolves the check-in/check-out issues with projects! Hopefully the compressor update fixes all the qmaster issues we've been having.

After doing the server update as well as update to FCP 6.0.4 on the client systems, I see that we can now check-in/check-out projects!!!

  • Final Cut, Quicktime, and Pro Tools conflicts

    Hi there,
I'm working on a "situation" I recently encountered, and wonder if anybody else has had this problem.
I'm trying to upgrade Pro Tools LE to version 6.9.2 with the install discs that were sent to me from Digidesign, and it's wreaking havoc with Final Cut Pro and Quicktime.
Initially when I installed the upgrade, I was running OSX 10.4.2, FCP 5.0.3 and QT 7.0.2. The Pro Tools upgrade worked fine, as did FCP when I launched it, but Quicktime wouldn't launch- spinning beachball forevermore.
So after doing all the basics- trashing pref's and render files, repairing permissions, etc.- and finding QT still wouldn't work, I tried upgrading to QT 7.0.3.
Once I did that, QT still wouldn't work, and Final Cut Pro would no longer launch. It just hung on the application startup screen, at no particular point each time.
I then upgraded to FCP 5.0.4, and as well OS 10.4.3. No luck. I installed the Pro Application Support updates 2005-02 1.0, and 3.1, and still no luck.
Since there is not yet a downgrade from QT 7.0.3 to 7.0.2, I ran the 7.0.2 to 7.0.1 installer, and downgraded to QT 7.0.1. QT still wouldn't launch, and FCP still hung on launch but this time it hung at the point where it was loading audio filters.
I tried removing the audio filters from their folders to see if it would launch then, but that didn't work. At this point, the only thing I could think to do was to uninstall Pro Tools altogether (safe uninstall, not clean uninstall) and this is what finally brought Quicktime and Final Cut back to life. Great, because I use FCP and QT everday, but I no longer have the use of Pro Tools.
Throughout this process I made sure to diligenty repair permissions, trash prefs, and restart whenever I made a change.
So I'm not sure at this point how to get Pro Tools LE 6.9.2, Final Cut Pro 5.0.4, and Quicktime (any version above 7.0) to work harmoniously, and I'm unable to spare any more troubleshooting time for a week or so because there are of course, projects due.
Has anybody else encountered these oddities?
    Thanks a lot,
    Joni

    Hi, Joni C
    I'm Bump,
I'm having the same trouble, I have FCP I'm running it on a G5 power Mac dual 2.5 ghz with 2.5 gb of memory, my os is 10.4.4. I also have Quicktime pro 7.0.3 and I have Pro Tools LE 7.0, every time I try to use FCP it starts and about five sec. later it shuts back down. I also have a Universal Audio UAD pci card that runs audio plugins and I also have fxpansion program it converts my vst & Au plugins to rtas for pro tools le. IBefore I installed FCP I wiped my hard drive and re installed a fresh version of tiger 10.4 and then I installed FCP studio, then Pro Tools, then all plugin and kept checking to make sure every thing was working correctly and then the U audio stuff with the Vst to rtas wrapper and it all was working fine. I even did the full final cut tutorial still worked fine. Yesterday out of no where final cut just stop working and still all the other programs work fine like dvd studios, soundtrack, motion, pro tools. If you can shead any light on this I would be very greatful

  • Final Cut Express Update HD 3.5 ...

    Hi,
I'm somewhat new to FCE and it's add-ons ... I see there's an update for versions 1, 2 and 3 called "Final Cut Express HD 3.5". Apparently, this adds HD editing to a normal DV editing system.
I have FCE version 4 ... does that mean that my version is capable of editing HD without an add-on?
Apologies for being quite so ... new?
    sky-pix

I thought you said it was FCE 4 ?
The differences are slight between all the versions.
FCE 3.5 was the first version to be designed specifically for Intel Macs. Earlier versions usually work on Intels but won't be as fast because they have to go through a "conversion" technology called Rosetta.
FCE 3.5 also has keyframing of effects, better realtime playback and Digital Cinema. There are also numerous smaller additions but nothing of any great importance.
FCE 3.0 and FCE 3.5 also came with Soundtrack and LiveType of course.

  • Different gamma between Final Cut & Quicktime with ProRes

I am experiencing a gamma shift in my exported ProRes clips from Final Cut when viewing in Quicktime (typically, Quicktime's gamma results in a more washed-out file, and this seems to be specific to my ProRes exports). Is anyone else having this problem? And does anyone know a resolution?

  • RE:  final cut quicktime error -50

Possible solution to the Quicktime Error -50
Go to the Final Cut application the the Apps folder and get info. (Command I) under the "General"  heading directly under neath the "Copyright" there is a box the says "Prevent App Nap" check this box.  Apparently, according to Apple, who I spent copious amount of time talking to this evening, checking this box prevents the program from slowing down when the computer goes to sleep. Wether this holds any water I don't know, but it works

    A couple of other thoughts:
How are you exporting? Have you tried exporting Share>Master File?
Does this problem occur with other projects?
    Are you using optimized media?
If you find using optimized and exporting a master file fails with the same error, and it happens with all projects, I would then create a new user account and test a project from that account.

  • Final Cut X Updates

As I'm sure people will be finding out over the next few days, there have been some major updates to Final Cut X.  It is the first step to bringing it back to a professional application.  I am currently using 7(stayed away from X) but now I am wondering if it is time to upgrade.  Has anyone used the new features yet, how are they coming, and is the program as a whole finally capable to use on a professional level?  Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Each professional editor has different needs and may find FCP X great or not so great.
For your specific circumstances, I would try before I buy, but also remembering that it is not about adding features to a program here only, FCP X has been re-designed and developed from ground up which will challenge your thinking in loking at things very differently than what you used to in FCP 7-
So don't just judge it on the merits of features only ...

  • Final Cut Studio update and FCPX

So I've not noticed until now, but I now have a need for it. I need to update my Final Cut Studio 3 to the latest Pro App update. I have an editing gig that is requiring me to use FCP7 but I recently installed it to my new Macbook Pro and it's really unstable. I've had it crash on me way too many times.
However, I have FCPX on my laptop as well. When I tried updating the Studio using the Pro Apps, update, it said it installed, but when I check the versions, it made no changes! So I'm wondering how I can actually update my Final Cut Studio 3 suite while I still have the FCPx and new Motion and Compressor installed on the same computer....
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    -Justin

ML should have no effect as I have both versions installed with no problems.
Which app are you trying to update?
You should use Software Update for FCS 3
    What version have you got?

  • Final Cut Studio updates

I've purchased and installed the final cut studio cross grade kit about 12 or 18 months or so ago. Now I am trying to get updates for motion 2.1.2 and final cut 5.1 that I own. I keep getting an error message that my serial numbers I'm registering are not valid. Clearly they are correct and the serial number for the crossgrade is the same on all the applications. Please tell me what I can do from here or can I get the serial number changed?
This is very frustrating, as it was when I had to send my original FCP disc's back to apple when I purchased this cross grade kit.
Thank you to anyone that can assist me.

Sounds like you're trying to download the updates by going to the Apple support site rather than using the "Software Update..." feature in the menu bar.
I've never had the problem, but I recall seeing a post or two similar to yours in the past and the recommendation was to use Software Update.
Another possibility is that you might be entering an O instead of a zero, or vice versa, if either of those are in the serial number.

  • Exporting Final Cut Quicktime movie onto DVD, Exporting Final Cut Quicktime movie onto DVD

    Hello,
So I've just finished a 30 minute long project on Final Cut Express.  I want to get this project onto a DVD-R (holds 4.7 GB) so I can get it to a television station where it will be aired.  I exported the project to my desktop as a Quicktime file.  The file is 22 GB.  This doesn't seem right.  What do I need to compress this file to get it onto a DVD-R with minimal loss of quality?  I used iDVD to get a 36 minute version of this project onto DVD and it worked great.  The thing is, if I'm giving the 30 minute version to a television station, the movie shouldn't have the interactive DVD title screen at the beginning, so I need to find another way to compress the movie.  Any advice??  Thanks.

    Hi
To get Maximum quality over to TV-Station - I would Copy back to miniDV tape (100% quality) and let them use a Camera or tape-deck to play it.
(BTW - DVD is as standard SD-Video - so HD material will not be any better - in some cases it even get worse)
Else if DVD is a must.
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things to know
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mix-down
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Drop it into the Auto-Play box (top left one in organization menu in iDVD)
Use a Very simple theme - eg "Brushed Metal" (old themes)
Drop a black photo here to make it invisibly
    • Now it will Auto-Start and end on a Black frame - There are no - No Menu choice else.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set down this to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
    Problems then
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

  • Final Cut Pro update for

I have final cut pro on my mac 10.7 needs to update with the serial number. Where do i do that? The final cut pro I have is old and says it cannot work on this computer.

The serial number for FCS came affixed to the booklet titled "Installing Your Software" that came bundled with the install discs.
FWIW, upgrades for FCP are no longer available form Apple as they have discontinued the product.  You can purchase FCP-X (version 10), which is actually version 1 of completely different software.  FCP-X is available for download from the App Store for $299.00 (USD).

  • Final Cut Pro Update - Old Projects & Events

Hi, Final Cut updated my folder structure (making it super confusing) and now I have a folder with a purple icon that has 4 stars that says "Macintosh HD's Projects & Events" and also a "Macintosh HD Old Final Cut Projects & Events" folder.
The "new" one is 315GB and the old one is over 500GB. Between the two I am now very low on harddrive space.
My question.... Can I delete the "Old" folder of projects & events? When I look at the new folder it appears to have everything in it, but I just wanted to make sure before I delected 500GB of projects.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Don't delete anything until the update process is completed and you are happy with the results.
A thing called Hard Links has occured that really uses little drive space.
It may appear that there are TWO large files but it's not really the case.
