Final cut sees my canon XL h1s, but no other software does

I have a canon XL H1s that i am connecting to my mac pro using the firewire port up front.
I am attempting to broadcast live to the internet using this camera and a media streaming server. so far i can get final cut pro to log and capture but i can't get adobe's flash media live encoder to even recognize the camera, same with imovie and quicktime broadcaster.
Is there a step that i am missing?

If you shoot HDV with a Sony, you need to play it back on a Sony HDV camera or deck. If you shoot HDV with a JVC camera, you need the JVC deck.
Canon does not have an HDV deck, so the only option you have for capturing HDV footage shot with the Canon XL-H1 is to use the camera as a deck.
Not one format of HDV is playable in any other manufacturers products.

Hi Pablo..
Make sure you are using the same Apple ID and password you used to originally purchase Final Cut X.
If you are running Lion v10.7 as your profile suggests, installing the OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo) will reinstall the App Store for you which may help.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed and try to update the software.

If you have an Intel Mac and have recently upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion; here is a post I made in another similar thread:
I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta. Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion). While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Workarounds:
1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
2. If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between Final Cut Pro or Lion/Mt. Lion;
3. Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the screen from your other Mac to view and work FCP in the Mac Mini environment);
2. Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCP (such as FCP X) and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly. There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
3. Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:

I have the 6500A without plus and it is with a LAN cable connected with my Router.
First make sure you have the latest printer firmware installed.
Next restart the printer and the Router.
I had the same. Problem but it went away after rebooting the Router.

Macbook, Final Cut Express and Canon 5D video files

Hello everyone.
I intend to purchase my first Apple Mac soon. It will probably be the Aluminium Macbook with 4GB RAM.
I am an avid photographer and use the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I can handle all the processing of the still photographs without a problem but I would like to take advantage of the cameras HD video capability. I know nothing about video editing but I have read that Final Cut is about the best video editor out there. My PC struggles to even play the movies from my camera, let alone edit them.
I have the following questions that I hope some of you can answer:
1. Will the standard Macbook with 4GB RAM be able to handle and edit the large video files (1.2GB for a 5 minute video clip)? I would prefer not to buy the Macbook Pro if possible. The computer will only be used for video editing occasionally. I will not be making 90 minute Hollywood style productions... just 5 minute short films once in a while.
2. Does the cheapest version of Final Cut (Final Cut Express) handle files from the Canon 5D2?
3. I know the video from the Canon 5D2 is generally disliked because it is 30fps and is in a strange format. However, I am not able to change this and I will not be buying a dedicated video camera as I rarely shoot video. So, I need to know if the Macbook and Final Cut Express can do the business with these files. Do you have any advice on how to handle the 5D2 files?

Yes. You have a lot of hard-drive space with the Macbook Aluminum, so that shouldn't be an issue but you might consider using an external hard-drive to store your media if you ever start making longer movies. To tell you the truth, the Macbook with 2GB of RAM would probably work just as well. I recently upgraded mine and it didn't make much of a difference. Either way though, the Macbook should work fine with Final Cut, mine does. You might consider getting the one with the 2.4GHz processor, I have the feeling that will make more of a difference when editing than the extra RAM.

Sort of, but it doesn't edit them natively. You can either drop the files in the timeline and render it out and it will work, or, if you don't want to render whenever you make a change, a better technique would be to first convert the clips using an application like the free [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com> to something FCE can edit natively such as Apple Intermediate Codec. It's not as simple as drag-and-drop, but it will work.

See above. I recommend the Streamclip conversion over the rendering though. If you have a lot of files to convert, Streamclip has a batch conversion setting so you can set what to convert to once and Streamclip will convert all the files. Converted files can then be edited in FCE without any particular problems.
You should convert using these settings:
Compression: +Apple Intermediate Codec for HD or DV-NTSC for SD+
*Frame Size:* +(A supported FCE frame size, for example 1920x1080, 1440x1080, 720x480, etc. The supported frame size you choose should be as close to your original frame size as possible)+
*Frame Rate:* 29.97
Sound: +Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz+
Keep in mind that the Macbook Aluminum lacks a Firewire port, so if that is detrimental to your use you should consider getting the white Macbook or the Macbook Pro. I believe the Canon 5D Mark II uses USB for transfer though, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Final Cut Pro X/Canon Vixia Import Time Different

Hi,
I have an annoying issue that I have not been able to figure out. I use a Canon Vixia M41 camera to record family videos in AVCHD. I usually import them directly off the card into Final Cut Pro X by first making an archive to store on another hard drive, and then import the actual clips into the library.
Everything works fine and seems to have been working fine for a while, but I recently noticed that my import time on all of my clips is off an hour. Now, I first thought, okay, daylight savings time, so I went into my camera and checked the time and date settings. I manually adjust for daylight savings time, so I do not have anything in the camera making the DST change automatically.
When I looked in the camera, the date and time are perfect. When I look at the clips on the card and click to play them back on the actual camera, the date and time are perfect there too; however, when I import those clips into Final Cut, the time on all of them are off by one hour. They are ahead an hour, so instead of 5 am, it's 6 am.
I know I can adjust the time in Final Cut, but I would like to know why the time is right on the camera and the clips on the camera, but import wrong when brought into Final Cut. I don't want to have to always check to adjust everything I bring into the application.
Any ideas? I am willing to test out anything. I have also noticed that it has been doing this for a while now and I didn't notice.

Canon Vixia M41 recording AVCHD

I've been running FCPX from version 10.0.1 up to the latest, and I spent some time puzzling why the time on imported files from my Panasonic SD700 were always an hour out. I tried several experiments setting the daylight savings on or off and adjusting the set time on the camera but FCPX always got it 1 hour wrong. This was despite the fact that the date/time on the raw video file in Finder was correct.
In the end I just had to accept that it was always going to be an hour out and either set the camera clock 1 hour back or take a short clip of the time on my phone so I could batch adjust the clips later! I can only assume FCPX gets its time from the metadata in the file structure and that some manufacturers' implementations confuse it!

With the capturing in FCE from the canon xl2 what should my easy settings be?

Okay I have read in the Final Cut Express manual that you can use a camera that has VTR mode. But i don't think that the canon xl2 has that mode. But I read on other sites that VTR is the same as VCR. I'm not sure which to believe, nor am I sure if what I'm trying to do will work. I'm trying to use my xl2 as a VTR device to display on to a tv. If anyone know how or if this will even work please help.. Thank you!

My new iMac hasn't got a firewire port... Only Thunderbolt?? How do import from a Canon XM2 Camcorder? Apple Final Cut Pro says that this camera is compatible but which cables do i need???

I have been using Final Cut pro v6 without any problems but recently had to reinstall. Since then I can't open and view all my Quicktime clips. They appear white in timeline which means you can hear audio but not view picture. Any tips?

They appear as white clips - audio only no pictures. There are a few QT clips you can view as regular thumbnail images and they play ok. What's the issue? I have fcp v6.0.6 and QT v7. Any thoughts on what to do next?

Yes I did software updates which updated fcp to 6.0.6 and QT to version 7.7. That's as far as updates have taken me although i have requested daily updates. I forgot to say the clips don't play in QT view either. Again sound but no pictures when they are played.

You certainly are new at this. That's cool, we all were new at one point.
You have a MacBookPro. That means you are using at least Mac OS X 10.5.6. Otherwise FCS 3 would not even install. You also should have QuickTime 7 installed. If you don't, it's in the Additional Installs folder on the Mac OSX disc that came with your computer.
OS 2 is an ancient Microsoft/IBN product and doesn't run on a Mac and certainly won't run Final Cut.
Your camera shoots in AVCHD format. The files are MPEG 4 and should have been transcoded to ProRes LT for use in FCP. Your Sequence settings should also be ProRes LT to match the transcoded footage.
Your laptop is not a codec.

Don't export using QuickTime Conversion. Export as Self Contained with Current Settings (same as your FCP Sequence, which by now is hopefully ProRes LT. Import that file into iDVD.
Better yet, learn DVD Studio Pro and Compressor. Both are included in Final Cut Studio and will give you far more control and much better results.
Whilst your video is encoding, take the time to read the user manuals found in the menu bar under the Help item. They contain a wealth of information and you can amaze the teacher and fellow students with your new found knowledge.

Open your Home library (not the root library), Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Layouts. Drag the folder to the trash. Npw re-launch the app.

Final Cut X shows 86 GB free, but Finder shows 392 GB free, why?

I've moved my Events and Projects to an external hard drive and accessing them from that location works well. However, when I go to import new footage, Final Cut X shows that I only have 86 GB free. On my desktop it shows that I have 392 GB free. Why dont these 300 GB show up in Final Cut X and/or what files/folder(s) do I need to delete? Thanks!

How did you move the events?
If you did it by File>Move Event it should have deleted the old files but if you just copied the events over they will probably still be residing in their original place.
They need dragging to the trash and deleting.

Final Cut will audio insert to Digibeta but not to Beta SP BVW-75?

Final Cut 5.1.4(Mac Quad Pro) will do audio inserts on a Digibeta deck but not a 75. We're using a Decklink HD EXtreme and have tried different "known good" BVW 75's. I thought 422 control was the same across Sony decks. What's different?

I selected the analog audio inserts on the Digibeta and it worked. However I do believe you can have no inputs to a 75 and the 422 control will turn on video or audio inserts. All of our BVW 75 analog decks work with other systems i.e. Smoke, Flame, Xpri, Adrenaline and they also work with two other other Final Cut systems. The other two Final Cuts are on MAC G5's and have different Decklink cards that work...a Decklink SP and Decklink Extreme. It is looking like an incompatibility of the Decklink HD Extreme to fully talk to BVW-75......
