Final Cut Server Download + Running public website

Hi all. I need help with my FCS set-up. We are a small non profit that uses our FCS to track our production assetts. We are running on a mac mini server. Right now we can download the installer and the FCS is up and running properly. But now we want to also run our website on our server, and we want to still have the ability to download the FCS client.
Any watch-outs or tips in doing this?

I agree with the Mac Mini being underpowered.. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do... With regards to both FCS and your website running on the same machine.. NO problem. The web server root is /Library/WebServer/Documents/ that is where the index.html goes and that is what will be served to web browsers when they connect too you server @ http://www.foo.com and the will still be able to get to you FCS @ http://www.foo.com/finalcutserver

  • Final Cut Server and Laptops

We are about to deploy FCS but have a number of editors that work off of their laptops.
I know my editors can look at FCS, but how do they retrieve the information that is stored on the SAN? Are they connected into the SAN through some sort of afp or something?

The clients are connected with the Final Cut Server service, running on a machine which can look at both local/network storages and the SAN. That means, by checking out/caching files, the server application (the user interface you can see) provides you with the files - transfered via the connection you have choosen for your laptop (LAN, WLAN etc.)
To sum it up, it's like that.
SAN Storage -> Mac with Final Cut Server service running <- Client, connected via LAN/WLAN (AFP, SMB whatever...)

  • Download Final Cut Server update 1.1.1 ?

    Hi,
Anyone know how (or where ?) to download an earlier update to Final Cut Server (v1.1.1) ?
No problem for download v1.5.2 on Apple Download Support, but the v1.1.1 link takes me back to Final Cut Pro X...
    Thanks.

Use Software Update to install the 1.1.1 update on a system running Final Cut Server 1.0 or 1.1.

  • Final Cut Server Client Download Problems

I am attempting to install/run Final Cut Server client on my laptop and Mac tower. The other day the client software worked well on my Mac tower but today no go. I attempted to install the client software on my laptop, I can get to the download screen in a web browser by typing the address of the local server but when I press download the next page appears but no download or dialogue box appears. Also while wrestling with this problem I deleted the client software from my tower. This same issue is now happening on the tower when I try to restore the client software. Possibly related or not I just updated the software to 10.6.7. but tried another machine I have here that is at 10.6.4 with the same result. I also read an old post that described problems with download initiation and how they can be resolved by deleting a few specific resources out of the Java Preference Cash Files. I completed this process which resulted in no evident change.

Try removing the FCSvr client from your local machine and then reinstalling it from the web installer while you are connected via VPN. Run these commands in Terminal to remove it:
    rm -r ~/Library/Caches/Java/
    rm -r ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.finalcutserver/
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finalcutserver.plist
    rm -r ~/Desktop/Final Cut Server.app
Sometimes my client just won't launch like you are seeing and reinstalling it within whatever network connection I'm using gets it working again.

  • How do I uninstall Java 7 on my Lion, so that I can run Final Cut Server again?

One of my fellow employees thought he was doin me a favor yesterday and upgraded my java on my Lion machine... now I cannot access my Final Cut Server any more.
How can I get back to a java version that works..... after all the java site is somewhat useless when it comes to this question.
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on the hard drive of a Mac. It's more difficult and you must be very careful with the Windows installation. If you do something wrong, you may lose Mac OS X.
Some Macs support Windows 8 > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US If your computer is supported, you can install Windows 8.
You can install Windows 8 from a DVD or a USB drive. If you want to install Windows 8 from a USB drive, you have to buy Windows 8 in the Microsoft Store, which will allow you to download Windows 8 in a ISO file, that you will be able to burn to a USB drive using Boot Camp Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities).
Apple has got official steps to install Windows on your iMac > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • Mac Mini to run Final Cut Server

    Hi
I'm buying up Mac Mini's to create a render farm for Compressor projects that I export from Final Cut Pro.
Recently I've started thinking about whether purchasing Final Cut Server might help improve various workflows, where a Mini would host the Final Cut Server and various other Mac Mini's and my Macbook pro would act as Clients and additional processor power for Compressor based activities.
Will an 2ghz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini with 4gig of RAM be up to the business of hosting? And does the Mini have an integrated Intel graphics processors which apparently is not supported?
    All advice gratefully received

The current Mac mini ships with Nvidia 9400m graphics and meets the minimum system requirements for Final Cut Server 1.5.
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutserver/specs/
It has limited expandability so if you find yourself needing more storage or processing power to handle larger workloads, I would be prepared to upgrade it to a Mac Pro or an Xserve.

  • Final Cut Server and Mountain Lion

Ok, so I have been trying to get Final Cut Server to work on Mountain Lion Server, and I have been so far following the path that has been set forth here...
    http://krypted.com/mac-os-x/installing-final-cut-server-on-lion-mountain-lion-se rver/
I have gotten through all of the steps except for the last one, which is concerning the "0000_any_80_.conf" file. My problem is, that this file doesn't exist at all on my system. In my /etc/apache2 folder there is no /etc/apache2/sites folder. I don't know what the junk is up with that. Neither the folder or the .conf file exist. I don't know if I'm just stupid or what. Don't know much about setting up apache. But in my Server app, "Websites" is up and running. Final Cut Server is even up and running in the System Preferences. I just have no way to download the client app. Has anyone else had this problem?

    And the file
    /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
    In mountain Lion is
    /Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/httpd_server_app.conf

  • SLS and Final Cut Server

    Hi.
I'm running FCServer on an iMac, and I'm currently looking for the best solution for giving co-workers outside of our office network remote access to our FCS database. The main purpose for this is for remote users to screen and download episode segments and movies from our database.
I was initially thinking VPN would be the only solution, but then I saw Snow Leopard Server has 'Mobile Access Server' built right into the OS, which appears designed to help users avoid having to use a VPN.
Before I go out and buy SLS for the company, I want to be sure it will work. Am I correct that Snow Leopard Server, and the built-in Mobile Access Server, will allow users outside of our network remote access to our FCSrvr database?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Thank you for your response.
I posted this in the Final Cut Server forum as well and got this response:
+"Mobile Access Server will give outside access as VPN would, which will be handy if you want to access Final Cut Server using the Java client app. It will also give you VPN access for non-FCSvr uses, like email and Web.+
+If all you want is a subset of your FCSvr database, then you could also publish selected content to a Web/FTP/WebDAV server in your DMZ."+
If anyone else could offer some insight it would be greatly appreciated. I'm just an audio/video post-production guy, so this is all a little outside of my training.
    Thanks.

  • Final Cut Server is for video and photo archiving?

Too many products in the last few years. I used to use iPhoto to archive both photos and video and edit them. Now I have moved to the professional line but it gets more confusing.
Aperture2: archiving and cataloguing thousands of pictures with minor edits
Adobe CS4: major edits to my pictures
FCP6: video edit but with no archiving and/or metadata capability
Final Cut Server: for what? Can it archive/metadata all my video and all my Aperture files and work
seamlessly between all these four programs?
Please help. I am considering buying Final Cut Server. I am both a photographer as well as a videographer running many different cameras over many different kinds of shoots. And I am trying to simplify my work process.
    Thanks,
    Brian

We were in a similar situation as well.
We use Adobe products for photo and desktop stuff
    and FCP Suite for video.
We ingest images with Bridge and add keywords.
The raw files are backed up and the corrected images
are processed (Photoshop/Image Processor) and dropped
into a Final Cut Server watch folder.
This action automatically adds the files to FCS for
easy access as well as backs up the images to an
external FTP in our desktop publishing office across
town. Desktop has its own version of FCS that adds
the new files and makes them available for designers.
When we shoot video we shoot mainly with Sony EX3
camcorders with SxS media. Footage is downloaded
and tagged in XDCAM Transfer. The folder that is
labeled "Import" in the utility is also a watch
folder which added the files to FCS.
So in other words Final Cut Server has us organized
and working together much better than we were before.

  • Final Cut Server Edit Proxy

    Hi,
I need to do remote editing (with FCP7) over small bandwith WAN (1Mbps) therefore I configure Final Cut Server (V1.5.1) Edit Proxy to use a Quicktime H.264 codec with the following parameters:
    File Extension: mov
    Estimated size: unknown
    Audio Encoder
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Video Encoder
    Format: QT
    Width: (100% of source)
    Height: (100% of source)
    Pixel aspect ratio: Default
    Crop: None
    Padding: None
    Frame rate: (100% of source)
    Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
    Codec Type: H.264
    Multi-pass: Off, frame reorder: On
    Pixel depth: 24
    Spatial quality: 0
    Min. Spatial quality: 25
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 25
    The workflow is:
The remote editor choose on Final Cut Server the FCP project he has to work on, do a Check Out of the project on his Final cut Pro 7 local station by selecting "use: edit proxy" and "keep media with project". Project and associated footage are then uploaded from the server to the remote FCP7 station with no problem.
When the upload is complete, the editor simply open the project file to start editing on his station. This workflow was working allright till january: when opening the project the FCP7 doesn't reconnect the media with an error message:
"one or more of the updates requested by Final Cut Server could not be applied. (one or more replacement (s) had unexpected track setting.)" and media files are Offline! When trying to reconnect manually by indicating the proper path for the missing files, I have to uncheck "Matched Name and reel only" to select the edit proxy files. It looks like it was still linked with the original media...
Looking at the project file, the paths for the proxy files are the proper ones...

If I change the Edit Proxy setting for ProRes 422 (Proxy) on Final Cut Server edit proxy setting then the reconnection is working OK. I cannot use this workaround as the files are then far too big to be tranferred over a 1Mbps WAN.
The setup with the Quicktime H.264 edit proxy was working fine after, it seems, the installation of Pro applications update 2009-01 issued end of october 2009, but since january 2010 it does not work anymore.
Final Cut Server is version 1.5.1 with Mac Os X server is 10.5.8
Editing station are running Final Cut Pro 7.0.1 and Mac Os X 10.5.8
What could be wrong ? Does anybody encountered this type of problem?
    Any suggestions welcomed!
    Thanks.

I'm dealing with this issue right now (FCSv 1.5.1 latest pro app updates, 10.6.2, FCP7). I was under the impression that you could make edit proxies that were 25% resolution (as opposed to just using an efficient codec), but Final Cut Pro is having a rough time getting it right. I too am only getting success with ProRes-Proxy, audio passthrough, and 100% res/everything else. I tried using Apple Intermediate Codec with default "100%" settings and audio passthrough but had no luck. It's way heavier than ProRes Proxy anyways.
The only suggestion I can make is try your h264 solution with audio passthrough (or Linear PCM) instead of AAC. If that makes a difference we're on to something. Some people started having this issue after an iTunes update, so maybe AAC is the source of the problem.
The edit proxy workflow really needs tweaking from Apple to cater to internet-based solutions rather than fiber/SAN environments where bandwidth is a non-issue.
I'll report back later after some more testing.

  • Recently upgraded my Java to Java SE 6 1.6.0_33; now Final Cut Server won't launch due to security restrictions. Help!

Running OSX 10.6.8, and I received a Software Update notification this morning stating that Java has a security update available. So, being the dilligent updater that I am, I updated to Java SE 6 1.6.0_33. Now Final Cut Server will not launch, stating "Unsigned application requesting unrestricted access to system"
Is there an exception list somewhere for the Java client to which I can add FCS? (Sorry, I'm not very familiar with Java)
Here is the launch file and exception info:

Aha! I was able to solve the problem thanks to the help of another editor.
Open Java Preferences (Applications > Utilities)
Click the check box on the first page to allow web applets
Under the security tab, there will be an existing Security Certificate (signed by Apple Inc.) that is likely for FCSvr. Delete the certificate.
Open FCSvr again, and Java will prompt you as to allow it or not. Click Allow and tell it to remember for future use.
Badabing, badaboom! FCSvr is back up and running!
(Note this is for client-side only)

  • Final Cut Server 1.5: G5 clients won't launch from icon

So I upgraded my client from FCServer 1.1.1 to 1.5. They have a mix of G5 and Mac Pro stations. The 4 Mac Pros are all working fine after some fiddling and Java cache deleting. The G5s, however, won't run the client launched from the saved icon.
    Scenario:
Access the client download from (IP address)/finalcutserver in a web browser - this works.
The applet downloads and saves - this works.
SOMETIMES it asks where to save the app - sometimes works.
The client app runs, logs in, all working fine - great.
BUT...if you quit and try to relaunch from that icon, it doesn't work. Purged Java caches, emptied the cache in the client, etc. - nothing. Updated from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8, same problem.
The Intel boxes all work, none of the G5s do - seems entirely platform specific.
    -mike

Heh... I solved this... in a manner of speaking. I really appreciate the input from Nicholas, Andy, RadUS, and everyone else, but nothing worked.
Weird. May be actually a Java problem, not a FCSvr problem, maybe something in the Java implementation of 10.5.7 and later. But who knows? No word on this from Apple. There's a surprise.
Here's the solution I ended up with. It's a cop-out I know, but it works!
My solution was to put the Final Cut Server.jnlp file on my desktop and just launch it from there. You can even make it look like the desktop app if you want. Here's how:
First you have to get the Final Cut Server.jnlp file on your desktop. It's not easy to find, because it's located in some weird temp directory somewhere buried in the recesses of the OS. If you don't know where it is, look through your browser's download history and find it. You can always redownload it by going to your server (yourserver.com/finalcutserver) and redownloading it. When you find it, move it to your desktop. Then do a Get Info on both the desktop app and jnlp file. Click on the icon for the app (the tray with the balls) and press Command C to copy the icon. Then click on the jnlp icon (the document with the cup of java) and press Command V to paste the FCSvr desktop app icon to the jnlp. Then check "hide extension" in the jnlp's get info window. Voila. You now have a "fake" desktop app. Yes, it's fake. Get over it! You won't be able to tell a difference. This is the only solution I came up with and I reinstalled Leopard twice.
    Hope this helps others too!

  • Final Cut Server Investment Inquiry

    Dear Forum-
I am the new campus videographer/editor for Bradley University, and we are considering investing in a *Final Cut Server* system to help catalogue, search, and archive future media assets. As of now, I am just editing off my MacBook Pro laptop on FCP using an AVCHD workflow.
From reading Apple's online materials, forums, and other resources I understand that FCSvr is ideal for an multi-editor Xsan environment, however, it can be downscaled to a single machine operation. My question is this: Without the complexities of an Xsan over our network, would a *single MacPro tower* with a large capacity RAID drives that is located on the network be sufficient to be the host, and myself (and possible other colleges) on MacBook Pro laptop work as FCP clients? What are the positives and negatives of going without an Xsan and just run FCSvr off a single machine?
If so, would FCSvr work in the following scenarios:
    - Catalogue and search through an existing photo archive on a separate server or would I have to move those assets to the FCSvr MacPro?
    - Would potential colleagues (Mac and PC) be able to access and edit footage on my FCSvr from various parts of campus and even remotely from home?
    - Is FCSvr able serve AVID clients on the network?
Lastly, does any know of a company/institution that is running a FCSvr operation in the Peoria, IL area for me to visit?
    Sincerely,
    Jon

    Jon Greenhoe wrote:

Yes, provided the photo archive is accessible via FTP, AFP, SMB, or NFS.
    Jon Greenhoe wrote:

As long as they have IP access to the FCSvr host, yes. Best practice for offsite users is to connect via VPN. This gets you access to proxies. Any editing would need to take place after checking out a project and downloading its edit proxies.

Not sure what you are asking. They could load the client and search like anyone else, but not much else.

  • Final cut server not serving java client application

weird situation. today i went to download the java client for final cut server 1.5.1 at my normal address and the webpage came up welcome.. with the ability to download the client application as normal but when i pressed the button to download nothing happened.
anyone have any ideas how to resolve this? manually removed all of the client java cache on the client machine and also reinstalled fcs 1.5.1 on the server with a restore of the database without any change in functionality. any ideas?

    hello ben,
thanks for taking your time to help me with the issue i am seeing here. I will do my best to read into what you said and explain.
    1. Network User Permissions Problems.
maybe you can explain, but i have not authenticated against anything at this point, just went to the normal.. "http://FQDN/finalcutserver"... the normal fcserver webpage comes up but when i click download it does not give me the ability to download the java applet or run a script that maybe delivers the java applet.
maybe i am not understanding, but what about what i am experiencing looks like a permission issue? permission for fcserver to distribute the java applet to a user who goes to the final cut server web page to download the client?
If that is the case, would you know where to start looking for permission issues?
    2. Verfy the web server services and comb through the user permissions and services on the server.
The web services, service is on and when i look at the logs with any reference of final cut server, this is what i see right after when i try to download the client app.
File does not exist:/Library/WebServer/Documents/FinalCutServer, referer: http://FQDN/~localadmin/webstart/content.php
as far as the user permissions, what should i look for? there are very few users, the local admin, the open directory admin and 1 other user in od.
with regard to services running on server 10.6.1 and how they affect final cut server.. checked use of how i would use AFP, DNS lookups, OpenDirectory & network homes, and Web services and appear to be working as far as i can tell.
hope the above information helps. thanks in advance for helping troubleshoot.

  • Rough Cut Editor for Final Cut Server

    Hi everyone,
we are working on a Rough Cut Editor for Final Cut Server.
I'd like to know what you think about it and put a short video about its usage on my site at
    http://www.andre-aulich.de/en/perm/consol-rough-cut-editor-video
Any feedback would be very much appreciated!
    Regards,
    André

    Hi guys,
in addition to getting in touch with you personally, I'd like to answer some questions in public:
    LAN vs WAN
    ==========
The RCE in its current form is primarily built to be used in a LAN.
This is because you need both the Final Cut Server client as well
as the RCE client to connect to a central server using the ports
    3000, 80, 8821, and 8891.
In addition, we currently suppose the Edit Proxy folder to be an
edit-in-place device, so you need to open port 548 if you use AFP
for that. We might change that, but you still need the FCSvr client
    to connect to your server.
That said, we currently consider the RCE to be run in a local network.
    FEATURES
    ======
We are not planning to build a server ingest app, as there are other guys
    building these kinds of apps.
A standalone version of the RCE without Final Cut Server connectivity would
be easy to write, yet, we like to use FCSvr's proxies for preview, as this way
low bandwidth (meaning non-Fibre Channel) to the viewing stations is
    sufficient.
So today there's the RCE in its current form...
    AVAILABILITY
    ===========
We are doing our final testing and hope to release the app within
    the next two weeks.
As we need to install some tools on a server and have a look at its
environment, we would currently install the RCE ourselves, usually
    through a remote connection.
Yet, we already consider having selected partners to implement the
    RCE as well.
Currently there's no beta program being planned, as we do our
testing at a customer site, where we hope to evaluate the app
    quite comprehensively.
I hope that answers some questions.
For more questions, please feel free to get in touch with me.
    André
