  • Opening Final Cut Studio 3 Projects on Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) & MacBook Pro (Lion)

    Hi Everyone,
Right i've been trawling the forums in regards to Lion's compatibility with Final Cut Studio 3. There seemed to be a mixed bag of reports, some running FCP fine on Lion, others having issues.
For this reason alone I decided to keep my main editing system, my Mac Pro, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and not upgrade to Lion.
More and more frequently i've thought I need to get myself a MacBook Pro, for data wrangling on location and for some cheeky edit sessions when i'm away on jobs.
The thing is, all new MacBook Pros ship with Lion as their OS.
My question is twofold really. Firstly, I've read that Final Cut Studio 3 installs and runs fine on Lion systems, can anyone confirm this?
Secondly, do any of you know if i'll be able to swap between, and freely work on projects across the two different systems, namely a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and a MacBook Pro running Lion? is this an issue at all?
The last thing I want to do is spend three grand on a MacBook and then realise I have issues opening or working on projects from my MacPro (or vise-vesa)
As ever, your help would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

I've read that Final Cut Studio 3 installs and runs fine on Lion systems, can anyone confirm this?
Yes, FCS 3 installs and runs without issue on my Lion system.
There are a couple of careats however  with the primary one being  DO A CLEAN INSTALL OF THE OS AND THE APPS. Upgrade installs over major version changes are problematic.
do any of you know if i'll be able to swap between, and freely work on projects across the two different systems, namely a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and a MacBook Pro running Lion? is this an issue at all?
Again, not an issue in my world.

  • Which final cut is best for macbook pro with snow leopard?

which final cut is best for macbook pro with snow leopard?

Probably FCP 7 which is part of Final Cut Studio 3.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Macbook (not Pro)

Curious to know if anyone has any experience running Final Cut Studio 2 on a non-pro Macbook. Can Macbook handle Final Cut Pro alright? Is video memory an issue?
    Thanks,
    Mbs

For the record, Motion will run on a MacBook. It's just that some of the features aren't supported, and will produce incorrect results. So I wouldn't rely on it.
Final Cut, however, works perfectly. No problems at all.

  • Final Cut 7 running slow after upgrading to SNOW LEOPARD

I was happy how everything was working and just didn't install SL on my Mac Pro. The SL upgrade DVD was sitting on my desk for two months already and I was waiting for a good timing to install it [+didn't want to upgrade while I had ongoing projects+].
Few days ago, I finally upgraded to SL and was hoping for better performance... on a contrary ... FCP render takes 3 times more to finish, playback is jerky and feels like 15fps, the spinning wheel appears more often and sometimes selecting is impossible, I have to click on a canvas then try selecting again. I didn't try other Pro Apps yet so I am not sure if there will be any problems with Motion, Color or any other FCP App.
I'm working with Panasonic P2 HD material (DVCPRO HD 1080p25),
I have 350GB system drive and it has around 15% free disk space and
internal Striped RAID set 3TB [3x1TB HDD] 50% free disk space.
_I tried opening a new Admin user and Logged in from that user account but nothing changed._
Anyone experienced something like this? I'm trying to find a solution without having to go back to Leopard, so any TIP would help.
    Thank you in advance

I've heard, but can't verify, that FCS should be installed after Snow Leopard.
Before reverting your OS, try do a complete uninstall of FCS -

    then a re-install.

  • Does Final Cut Pro X work on OS X Snow Leopard?

Can I run Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, Compressor, and Adobe Photoshop CS6 on OS X Snow Leopard?

check the system requirements for these programs yourself.  It can be done very easily via google instead of having others do it for you.

  • Problem installing Final Cut Studio 2 on MacBook Pro

I'm trying to install Final Cut Studio 2 on a MacBook Pro / Snow Leopard but when it comes to choosing install options Final Cut Pro is greyed out and just says skip.
I've done some research and found people with the same problem but none of the fixes I've seen have worked. I also have Logic Pro installed - which I installed first - which seems to be causing the problem. I've tried removing Logic but am still seeing the same problem.
Besides a clean install does anyone have any suggestions?

Read this article on how to install final cut pro after logic studio.

  • Can Final Cut Studio be installed on a new Mac Pro?

My G5 PPC died.  The processor went bad.  It would have cost me around 2 grand to fix.  So I just bought a brand new Mac Pro thinking that would be the better investment.  Tried to install Final Cut Studio and it is not supported.  Is this true?  If so - this Mac is going back to apple for a refund and I'll pay the 2 grand to fix the old one.  I can't afford to loose years of past projects.  Not to mention I am in the middle of project and have no way of working on it. Any fix for this?  My trust in Apple low and my years loyalty may have to move to another system.  I thought it was just drama when a college said the end has come for FCP.

FCP 5, 4.5, 3...no, they will not work on Intel Macs.  FCP 5.1 was the first version to work on those machines.  So if you have FCP 5 or earlier, no, it will not install.  Sorry.  And since FCP as you know it has been discontinued, you can't really upgrade to a later version that will open your projects.  FCX is the new version, and it is very different than FCP was, and cannot open older project files.
Sorry man...when you hold on to old old software, and get new machines, it won't always work. This is true for any software, on any machine.  FCP 5 is over 6 years old...7!

  • Final Cut Studio Academic Version - confused buyer.

    Hello,
I am about to buy Final Cut Studio 2 using the Academic Discount Program. I know that by purchasing the academic version I will not be able to upgrade. When I access the page (viewing it as a student) where I can see the different types of "Pro Design" softwares that I can buy, I see two "Final Cut Studio 2". One is Final Cut Studio 2 and the other one is Final Cut Studio 2 Academic. Both cost the same $699. When I select Final Cut Studio 2 it does not say that this is an upgrade version.
I'm afraid of selecting the one that does NOT have the word Academic because it might be an upgrade version even though it doesn't say.
    Help!
    Thank you...
    A humble confused customer....

    Hi DH,
Thanks for your response. I would easily get the one that says academic, but if I have the option of buying the non-academic version for the same price as the academic I rather buy the non-academic one. I am confused because the website does not say that the non-academic one is an upgrade version, but when I called 1-800-MY-APPLE, the guy told me that is an upgrade version. I told him the website does not say it is and that is why I got confused.
    Thanks again...

  • Final Cut Studio folder on mysteriously on my computer?

    Everybody,
I was bored and looking through my computer today and noticed that I have a Final Cut Studio folder. The file path is: Library/Application Support/Final Cut Studio. Where did this come from? Thanks.

Did you ever have Final Cut Studio installed? If not, you should be able to delete the folder.

  • Xsan & Final Cut Studio

About a month ago we purchased Xsan, an Xserve G5, a Qlogic 5200, etc. to set up a SAN for video production. We are still waiting on a few items (gigabit switch, UPS) before we start to set it up, but in the meantime I had a couple of questions:
Before FCP5 and Xsan 1.1, I had read that FCP projects should not be stored on an Xsan volume, but tha FCP5 should have solved the problem. Since then, I have looked everywhere that I could think of to see if this turned out to be true, but I cant seem to find that info anywhere. Is this possible now? How about the other Final Cut Studio apps? Photoshop (not as important since we can easily transfer to a local drive then edit and transfer back)?
To be honest, Apple seems to have suggested Xsan's strong point in video production is "efficient workflow". Network transfer of project files doesnt seem too efficient to me, so I am hoping direct storage is possible now. I am somewhat confused however about why this was ever an issue. If a project file can be stored on an Xsan volume and read from an Xsan volume why couldnt you edit directly from Xsan? Is it that the app must be designed specifically to function with Xsan for read/write purposes so that files will not become corrupted?
Currently we only have enough drives to use 1 controller. I know that striping LUNs in Xsan is faster than having 2 individual LUNs. When we add more drives, can striping achived without reformatting that SAN? We mainly edit in DV and DVCAM right now, but occasionally Uncompressed SD. We may eventually go to HDV or DVCPro HD in the future (probably 1 or 2 years), but I doubt we will ever edit directly in Uncompressed HD (only output).
One last question... We purchased the AppleCare Xsan Support. Can you use this service to guide you through installation or is it just support for problems that arise? I know Xsan setup is not trivia (as has been mentioned numerous times on this forum) and I want as smooth a transition as possible.

I think I read on this forum that you couldn't work with FCP4.5 projects directly from the Xsan because 4.5 was not POSIX compliant. We're using FCP5 on Xsan 1.1 and storing them on the Xsan for backup purposes. When we want to work on the project at hand we drag it to the desktop and open it from there. Everything works fine. We haven't tried to work with a project from the Xsan.
I'm a little bit confused about your question about LUNs. You can have the metadata and storage on the same LUN if you chose to do so. The way I see it you have three options:
First, if you have a half populated Xserve RAID then format it RAID5 (hopefully you have already done so). Then tell Xsan Admin to use that LUN in a storage pool that can contain both metadata and storage. This would work better if you chose to fully populate the RAID. Then you can add the 2nd LUN to that storage pool.
The 2nd config would be to split up those 7 drives. Do a RAID1 with two drives on the first controller. Then do a RAID5 with 5 drives on the 2nd controller. You would then have two LUNs and two storage pools. The problem with this is you would have to buy a whole new RAID unit if you wanted to add on. However, you would get more performance by spreading LUNs over more controllers with 160MB/s of performance.
The 3rd config would be to do a RAID1 on two drives and then a RAID 5 on 5 drives on the same controller. This would then let you split things up and also add more storage later. You could then add 5 more drives on the other controller and make that a RAID5. Then take the other two drives and do a RAID0 for rendering or audio or something.
The bottom line is there are a few options. The best way to do things is to utilize your bandwidth coming from your controllers.
I'm not sure how the Apple Xsan Support works, but I'd assume they might be nice enough to help out in the set up process.
    Good Luck,
    Scott Dominick

  • Help with Installing Soundtrack 3 alongside Final Cut Studio 2

    Hi All,
I am looking for advice on how to install Soundtrack Pro 3 which is part of my Logic Studio Upgrade. I have a Macbook Pro with Final Cut Studio 2 and Logic Studio. I just bought the upgrade to Logic Studio (and not Final Cut) as I mainly do audio work and rarely video editing any more.
The installation instructions say that Soundtrack Pro 3 and Compressor 3.5 have new components which are not compatible with my older Final Cut Studio 2 and will not be installed.
Is there a way to install Soundtrack Pro 3 as a standalone application in another part of my computer, like under a different user or in some way where I can open it independently from the Final Cut Studio 2 program? Or is upgrading Final Cut Studio 2 to version 3 my only option?
Thanks in advance for any ideas,

It's easy... just boot from your OS CD, and choose erase and install from the optional installs button once booted. Run Software update a few times until there is no more to update... This will erase the hard drive and install a new OS on it.
    Install whatever.
To boot from this drive, hold down the option key during a startup , and you can pick it from the dialog box that opens. To reboot just select the other drive in the startup disk pref in Apple System prefs.

  • Final Cut Studio floating license.

Hi, I was wondering what kind of licensing Final Cut Studio comes with. I have a Macbook Pro, and am about to get a Mac Pro as well. At the moment I do not have FCS, but am about to buy a copy ... I was wondering whether I can install it on my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro and use one or the other depending on where I am. I will never need to use both at the same time (if I'm home its the MP, if I'm travelling its the MBP) so if I can carry a dongle from my Mac Pro to MBP it would be great.

That's correct, except that what you refer to as Final Cut Studio 5.0 was really just Final Cut Studio. Apple had not yet begun numbering the Studio. It contained Final Cut Pro 5.0, but the Studio didn't have a number, just a name.
Apple added permission to load FCS on a desktop AND a laptop for the first time with the SLA for FCS 5.1.
But in a confusing move, they have numbered the version that follows FCS 5.1 as FCS 2. Huh?
Regardless, it's the biggest upgrade in recent memory. Can hardly wait to receive it next week.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 Update Security -- Putting Serial # in for "Update"

I am still working with FCP Studio and FCP 5. I have heard that when I purchase FCP Studio 2 with FCP 6, the first time I go do a "Software Update" it will ask for the Serial # for the FCP Studio 2. Is that true? I am just curious. I have already ordered FCP Studio 2. Will it always ask for the Serial # when I do an "Update?" Is there any other security upgrades from Final Cut Studio 1?
    Thanks in Advance

Software update has nor required this.
But downloading the items manually from the Apple update site for FCS2 does require this.
Don't know of any "security updates" for FCS? What are you referring to?
There are some for the OS, etc.
