Final cut studio 2 academic v full retail

How important is it to have an upgradable version of final cut studio 2, rather than the academic.

Welcome to the forum!
This is the Final Cut Express forum. That being said, it is only important to get the full version of FCS2 if you are going to want to upgrade it in the future. The student version gives you some money off the price, but you would have to buy a full student or normal version of the upcoming FCS3 to upgrade. You couldn't get the drastically price-reduced upgrade version in the future.
Besides pricing, the Final Cut suite is exactly the same whether it is the academic or upgradeable version.

  • What Is The Difference With FInal Cut Studio 2 Academic To Full Version?

Hi there I just got a Macbook Pro and plan on buying Final Cut Studio 2 but found the Academic version cheaper and was wondering what the difference is especially with quality and the handling of hd video Sony EX HD to be exact). Thank you for any responses.

The software is the same; the only difference is that you cannot upgrade an academic version and you have to be able to qualify for the academic pricing (students and teachers).

  • Final Cut Studio 2 Academic

As an educator and producer, I am considering a purchase of Final Cut Studio 2 Academic version. Is this an exact copy of Final Cut Studio 2, or are some features omitted to offset cost reduction?

As a student, I can say that the academic price was right, but NOWHERE does the apple site say that it is non-upgradable. I was SO disappointed when I found out that I'll need to spend ANOTHER $600 just to buy ANOTHER piece of non-upgradable software. After two purchases it would've already been cheaper for me to just start with a full commercial version and get the cheaper updates. If you know you'll be upgrading in the future, I'd say get a commercial license. If you don't think you'll need to or will want to upgrade, go academic.
    Good luck,

  • Final Cut Studio 2...Full version or just Academic?

    Good Evening:
Someone is selling to me a final cut studio 2.0. I Want to know how is this version is full or academic : Sticker at base says: MA886Z/A Final Cut Studio 2.0.1 RETAIL ......There is no indication on box.

If it says RETAIL, it isn't the academic version (unless someone replaced the sticker).

  • Use Final Cut Studio Academic on multiple computers ?

I bought Final Cut Studio 3 academic version for my Mac. However, I have another person who is helping me edit the film project. Is it ok to install the same s/w using the same discs and serial number on her computer as well ? Does the s/w licence cover multiple computer use ?

Here's the exact wording from the Software License Agreement (SLA):
"2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
    A. Apple Software (Bundle)
Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-branded desktop computer and one Apple-branded laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you. You may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time. You may make one copy of the Apple Software in machine-readable form for backup purposes only; provided that the backup copy must include all copyright or other proprietary notices contained on the original."

  • Final Cut Studio Academic Version - confused buyer.

    Hello,
I am about to buy Final Cut Studio 2 using the Academic Discount Program. I know that by purchasing the academic version I will not be able to upgrade. When I access the page (viewing it as a student) where I can see the different types of "Pro Design" softwares that I can buy, I see two "Final Cut Studio 2". One is Final Cut Studio 2 and the other one is Final Cut Studio 2 Academic. Both cost the same $699. When I select Final Cut Studio 2 it does not say that this is an upgrade version.
I'm afraid of selecting the one that does NOT have the word Academic because it might be an upgrade version even though it doesn't say.
    Help!
    Thank you...
    A humble confused customer....

    Hi DH,
Thanks for your response. I would easily get the one that says academic, but if I have the option of buying the non-academic version for the same price as the academic I rather buy the non-academic one. I am confused because the website does not say that the non-academic one is an upgrade version, but when I called 1-800-MY-APPLE, the guy told me that is an upgrade version. I told him the website does not say it is and that is why I got confused.
    Thanks again...

I had listed my software at eBay after deauthorizing it from my Mac Pro. Was I under a contract with Apple that prevented me from reselling the software?(I'm afraid I don't have time to read pages of fine print.) Here's the message I just received from eBay after the closed my auction:

    eBay heavily "overprotects" copyright owners.
The BSA is hired by Apple to look out for copyright violations. They simply go after everything without any investigation. eBay plays along and so you are the one with the problem to do something completely lega.
Here is the relevant section of FCS's SLA:
    3. Transfer. You may not rent, lease, lend, sell, redistribute or sublicense the Apple Software. You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, original media, printed materials and this License; (b) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (c) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License. All components of the Apple Software are provided as part of a bundle and may not be separated from the bundle and distributed as standalone applications.
This means that you are allowed to sell the package if you are the original owner of the software.

  • What's in the Final Cut Studio 2 Box?

I have Final Cut Studio 2.0.1. Retail version. I got it with a 2nd hand MBP I bought recently, and I plan to sell FCS2. I have no need for it, iMovie is fine for me.
But I don't have the big fancy box or manuals or ? included... what is meant to be in the box?
    I do have...
    - 9 installation CDs in the small black apple box.
    - Final Cut Studio Software License agreement.
    - 'Installing Your Software' documentation with serial numbers.
    - Apple Software 'Proof of Purchase' coupons.
If anyone has FCS2 and can tell me what I'm missing, I can advertise it more effectively and truthfully! Thanks.

Basically, you're not missing anything; most of the documentation is electronic. Click here for a complete list of the box's contents.

  • Uninstalling Final Cut Studio 1 Extras

I am on a 1st-gen MacBook Pro with a 100 GB hard drive that filled up quite quickly. I am looking to remove some unnecessary features so as to clear up as much space as possible.
I'm running Final Cut Studio 1 (Academic Version) and remember that when I first installed it, I installed a ton of optional material (tutorials/templates, etc.) for the programs included with Final Cut Studio. What is the best way to go about removing this extra junk off my hard drive? I think it will clear up a lot of space.
    Thanks!

Go to the Library>Application Support>Final Cut Studio folder. Inside you will find the additional content for FCS; Soundtrack Pro loops, Motion & DVDSP content, etc.

  • Cannot install Final Cut Studio 7 on new Mac Pro

I've just purchased Final Cut Studio 7 (Academic edition) for my Mac Pro (brand new G4 running 10.6.2), and it refuses to install. When I start the download package I get an Alert:
"Final Cut Studio Installer requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card."
and just quits. I looked on the specs online (http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/) and it states that I need
"ATI or NVIDIA graphics processor (integrated Intel graphics processors not supported)"
I have 2 NVIDIA graphics cards, both GeForce GT 120. Are these not Quartz Extreme capable video cards?

First of all you don't have a G4. A G4 is an obsolete computer that doesn't run Final Cut Studio.

  • Production Suite (Academic) to Final Cut Studio (Retail)

I am looking to upgrade my Production Suite (Academic) to a Full Version of Final Cut Studio. Since this is really not an upgrade will the full version of Final Cut Studio not recognize my Production Suite and install everything separately? Is there anything that I can do to make my transfer easy and seamless?

    Zachary,
It sounds like you are asking '"Will the retail version install over the academic without problems?" not, "what's the upgrade purchase path."
Whether the previous version was academic or retail, best practice would be an erase and install. Most problem installations are those that simply install the new verison over the previous one.
If you have installed thrid party plug-ins (Nattress, etc.) make sure you have the orignial download - don't worry about saving them from the folders.
    good luck.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 - Retail or Academic?

Can somebody settle this please. I purchased copy of Final Cut Studio 2, MA886Z/A boxed etc but got a discount because I was a student. I presumed therefore that I bought a full retail version but with a discount. I'm beginning to worry that I've ended-up with the academic version that can't be upgraded. Can anyone clarify this please?

Don't worry about upgrade pricing. It doesn't look as if there will be any.

  • I have an academic version of Final Cut Studio on my laptop and recently purchased the most recent Full version of Final Cut Studio. Do I need to uninstall the academic version before installing the new version?

I have an academic version of Final Cut Studio on my laptop and recently purchased the most recent Full version of Final Cut Studio. Do I need to uninstall the academic version before installing the new version? I ask because this is not an upgrade, but a completely new version.

I'm with Jim on this.  It always seems to work out better if you do not install over another version.  You can use this app (freeware - thanks to Jon Chappel) to completely remove ALL Final Cut Studio apps and components: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
Once that's done, install your newly purchased version.

  • About Apple Final Cut Studio 3 HD Full Retail?

I'm Bidding on ebay.com on Apple Final Cut Studio 3 HD Full Retail & I Wanted to know how many CD's are in Apple Final Cut Studio 3 HD is this a long Continuing Process to Install?

There is no such thing as Final Cut Studio 3 HD.
I believe the official name is Final Cut Studio 2009. The HD has not been included since FCP 4.5 and only referred to FCP.
Make sure you know what you are getting. Someone here recently was sold FCP 5.0 as the latest version of Final Cut Studio on eBay.
As to the number of discs, there are a lot, but the best install procedure is to make DMG backups of your DVDs, mount them all at once, and install. Takes about 20 minutes once you've made the DMGs.
