Final Cut Studio 2  / Mountain Lion

Hi!
I've spent most of my day reading through several posts and I am now totally confused. Here's my issue. I just purchased a new Mac Book Pro with Mountain Lion. I also purchased Final Cut Studio 2 / FCP 6. I was unaware that this version needed Rosetta to be installed on my new mab Book Pro. I'm trying to find the simplest way to get up and running. Can I just buy an upgrade to FCP version 7? Or will I run into the same problem? I figure that since I am buying the upgrade, I may not have to even install FCP 6...as long as I have the Serial. I also understand that Apple only supports FCPX on Mountain Lion, but from what I understand, the issues seem to be just installing. Any help with this?
Thanks!

>Can I just buy an upgrade to FCP version 7?
If you can find one on eBay, Amazon etc. Apple discontinued FCS 16 months ago.
>Or will I run into the same problem?
FCS 2009 (with FCP 7) has an Intel installer.
>I may not have to even install FCP 6...as long as I have the Serial.
Correct.
>I also understand that Apple only supports FCPX on Mountain Lion,
I run FCS 2009 without issues on ML. You will get better support on this forum than any offered by the iLife experts staffing the Genius Bar.

  • Final Cut Studio and Mountain Lion?

Not finding a clear answer anywhere.  Can I install Mountain Lion over Snow Leopard, and have the new ML system recognize my Final Cut Studio (7) and its ancillary apps like Color and Soundtrack Pro?
I don't have the time to re-install the whole FCP shebang.  But I would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

    Thank you mishmumken ...
I remember how long it took to do the last install.  And my FCP is running sooooo smoothly.  And my discs are sitting in another city ... a two day drive to fetch ... or a border to cross if I have them shipped.  Tsk tsk tsk.
Maybe I'll do the Mountain Lion on my laptop, to try it out ... and see if my currently installed FCP will still run properly (you do say 'it is recommended', but maybe not absolutely required, my risk).  And not touch the tower, where I do most of my work anyhow.
    Very much appreciated mish,

  • Final Cut Studio and Mountain Lion 10.6.8 Problems

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.6.8. on my Mac Pro (upgraded from Snow Leopard).
I now realise, looking at various forums that trying to run FCP7 on ML is not straightforward, or maybe not even possible!
I have found that after updating to ML, Final Cut Pro 7 (Studio 3) would appear to run pretty much fine, but the main problem is constant 'dropped frames' warnings when running HD ProRes projects. The frequency of these 'dropped frames' freezes (every few seconds!) makes FPC7 unuseable. These HD ProRes projects ran perfectly well under Snow Loepard. In fact FCP7 was totaly stable and reliable despite constant daily hammering.
There is a lot of good ideas and information on the forums, largely talking about FCP being incompatable because ML no longer supports Power PC type installers, but there doesn't seem to be very much overall agreement.
Now that ML has been around awhile, can anyone share any definite information about FCP7 working with ML? Apple themselves maybe?
I suppose it's my own fault for not doing my homework properly before trying ML. I rely on FCP7 for my work. So I'm going to spend today clean-installing my MacPro back to Snow Loepard and re-installing everything. Oh joy!

In reply to Maurice, yes, Mountain Lion is 10.8. In my post I mistakenly typed 10.6.8 which is Snow leopard.
For now I'm sticking to Snow Leopard. Did a ground-up reinstall and my FCP7 set-up runs perfectly again. Happy, happy!
If I had time (which I don't) it would be interesting to try a complete re-build of a Mac Pro with Mountain Lion, then install FCP7 and FCPX from scratch. I suspect that may work. Some people are saying they have no probs, but when I tried it as a upgrade (rather than a re-install) it was a mess.
Another problem with 10.8. was that my Blackmagic Intensity card would not output pictures from FCPX to my monitor, despite trying the latest drivers from BMD. This was my main reason for upgrading to Mountain Lion in the first place - I wanted to try out FCPX, but monitor output apparently only works with 10.7 onward.
Does anyone else have any experience with FCPX and Intensity cards?

  • Why can't i install final cut studio in mountain lion?

i have the disc and i wanted to install final cut pro but for some reason it is not letting me.

    ANSWER:
I have come to the conclusion that the Installer app is NOT written in PowerPC, but otherwise has a bug that triggers the "PowerPC apps..." dialog box in Lion and Mt. Lion.
While you and others have attempted to install Rosetta from a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD into Lion or Mt. Lion, I am convinced that it only works to side-step this bug and allow the installer to complete the installation.
Think about it: if you can install Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion and get a PowerPC installer app to work, why doesn't that installation of Rosetta work for any of the hundreds of other PowerPC apps (and indeed they fail when launced to run in Lion or Mt. Lion with Rosetta installed)?
The conclusion is simple: the FCS2 installer app is NOT PowerPC and installing Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion will fail to gain any use of Rosetta on either platform.
So, you might respond, but if the simple installation of Rosetta into Lion or Mt. Lion fixes the bug and allows the installer app to function, why not?
The answer is more complicated: I am now reading posts on this and other forums of DANGER later on down that road.  People who earlier installed Rosetta into their Lion computers are now reporting all sorts of otherwise unexplainable crashes, freezes, etc.!
There are two DANGER-FREE ways to install this program:
1`.  Use Terminal as suggested above but described in more detail by Jeremy Johnstone on his blog (and be sure to read Aric's June 4, 2012 comment): http://www.jeremyjohnstone.com/blog/2012-03-11-installing-final-cut-pro-studio-2 -0-on-mac-os-x-10-7-lion.html; or
    2.  Use Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL ROSETTA INTO LION OR MOUNTAIN LION!

  • Is Motion 3.0 compatible with Final Cut Studio-7 on Lion?

I was just wondering if the Motion on Final Cut Pro works on Lion for the iMac because it seems to freeze when I open it and when I try to reinstall I can't locate it. Does anyone know what the problem is, or have a solution for me? thanks for the help.

It is Final Cut Studio 3 or Final Cut Pro 7 and yes it woarks fine in snow or lion

  • Final Cut Studio 2 / OS Lion

I just bought a new iMac anticipating that I would be able to use my employer's copy of Final Cut Studio 2.
This evidently is not the case at all.
The end result I am seeking is really to have a decent editing program along with compressor or something comparable with which to export.  Motion would be great, but I wouldn't be torn up, as long as I had something better than iMovie with which to edit.
My question is in my situation what would be the most cost effective plan (without purchasing Final Cut Studio X or spending more than the cost of the new 21.5'' iMac I purchased)?
    - Return the computer and look for a used Mac with Snow Leopard?
    - Would a FCS 3 upgrade even work, if I could find one?
    - I don't necessarily understand the specifics of the PowerPC dilemma, and is this a hardware problem with new iMacs?  That is, if I used a different operating system, such as linux on the new iMac would I be able to load FCS 2?
I have looked around a few times through Message Boards, but haven't seemed to find anything on a user who has purchased a new iMac with the factory preset as OS Lion.
Any suggestions or leads would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

Cool Nick. I came across your post later. I'm not really a big tech guy so I was hoping there was an easy fix but at least you're providing an option.
I'm shocked that Apple would do this (not allow FC6 to work on Lion). For a company that prides itself on being very consumer friendly and making life simple....this *****. I spent $1,800 + CDN thinking ya, let's go the legit route and actually buy software that will last me a few years but now I have this cool looking Apple box which I may end up using as a foot stool!
Hope you tech guys can figure something out or even better....maybe someone at Apple will fix this!

  • Final Cut Studio 5 on Lion

    Hi Everybody,
A few years ago I bought the very expensive complete Final Cut Studio 5.
Is it true that this can not be installed on the latest Lion 10.8.2 ?
If so what a waste of money as I find Final Cut Pro X pretty basic and definitely not as professional as FCP5 and later versions.
    Thanks for your insights.

    Thoughts....
FCP 5 being expensive: Back when it was sold, it was one of the cheapest professional options out there. Cheaper than Avid...cheaper than Adobe Creative suite.
Age: FCP 5 is 6+ years old.  First off, in terms of monitary return, you should have easily made up the cost of the application by now, if you use it to earn a living.  Recouped your cost.
Second...6+ years in terms of software is VERY old.  Asking it to run on current OS software...no matter what app and OS we are talking about...is asking a lot.  This is one reason many software companies don't upgrade their OS...to remain compatible with the software they need.  This will run perfectly fine on an older machine running 10.3, through 10.6. And if it is FCP 5.1, it will work on Intel macs. If it is 5.0...it will only run on PowerPCs, so you will be stuck needing to use a G5 or other PowerPC mac.
    Options:
    - Find a copy of FCP 7 (Final Cut Studio 3) on ebay.  Sorry, it won't be cheap either...the asking price I'm finding matches what it initially sold for. Very in demand app.
    - Look at Adobe CS 6...Premiere Pro CS6 if you only want the app.  You don't need to shell out $1700 all at once if you want, there's the Creative Cloud that enables you to rent it for $50 a month.  That's $600 a year...and all the upgrades are free as long as you do that.
    - Look at Avid Symphony or Media Composer.  There is crossgrade pricing for FCP users.
    http://community.avid.com/forums/t/114517.aspx
    - Stick to an older machine and older OS if you insist on sticking with FCP 5.  It will work fine. It just won't be state of the art, and won't work with a majority of newer cameras.

  • I need to reinstall Final Cut Studio 2 in Lion

    Please, sorry for my english.
Well, past week i upgrade to Lion. Everything is perfect, but i has Final Cut Studio 2 installed, everything goes ok, but today, i need to run Cinema Tools, and it crashes every time i try to.
I think the only thing i can do is reinstall Cinema Tools, but i can't install FCS 2 in Lion.
    ¿Any Solution?
I've paid for FCS and it is what i need now to work, i dont need FCS3 or FCPX, i don't wanna pay for it. But i need Cinema Tools running....
    Thanks.

Cinema Tools is crashing on my brand new MacBook Pro as well. I can reinstall everything but FCP. However, reinstalling Cinema Tools has not solved anything. It still won't open.

  • Trying to install Final Cut Studio on my Lion Notebook

    Hey guys,
I bought a MacBook Pro with Lion on it but I can't seem to install Final Cut Studio 2 without Rosetta.  I have the Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade discs which are universal but I cant install FCS3 without first installing FCS2.  Anyone have any ideas?

    > Will I run into any issues if I install Final Cut Studio 3 to run in conjunction with Final Cut X?<
That's been a running topic and I've found the posted discussions to be mutually exclusive. Maybe it depends on the hardware platform. Dunno. Might search the FCPX forum too.
Please post back if you figure it out with your own experiences.

  • Final Cut X and Mountain Lion

Can anyone give me a read as to the implications of Mountain Lion and Final Cut X on a Mac Pro? Middle of edit and also about to begin anew, need to know this useful information from a pro. Who was it? Tom Wolsky that I was so impressed with guding us thrhough the first 6 months of Final Cut X ****? Tom, are you there? Any other sigificant hitters within reach? Thanks! William Shanley

No, but I might know what you're referring to.  I noticed around the release of .4 that they changed they way it worked with regard to stabilization.  If I uses the two together, I would get ghosting.  I found that in order to stabilize AND retime, I would have to first export a stabilized clip and then apply retiming effects to the fully baked clip.  That produces much better results and eliminates distortion.
I'm not entirely sure what elly effect you're talking about, but is it anything like rolling shutter?  I do see distortion from time to time with optical flow against busy backgrounds, but even twixtor pro has trouble with that.  My current issue isn't just problematic results, it's no results a all.  The analysis is completing way too fast, which leads me to believe something is going wrong at that stage (I suspect it's a GPU issue since early builds of ML are said to have had GPU problems in FCPX).

  • Final Cut Server and Mountain Lion

Ok, so I have been trying to get Final Cut Server to work on Mountain Lion Server, and I have been so far following the path that has been set forth here...
    http://krypted.com/mac-os-x/installing-final-cut-server-on-lion-mountain-lion-se rver/
I have gotten through all of the steps except for the last one, which is concerning the "0000_any_80_.conf" file. My problem is, that this file doesn't exist at all on my system. In my /etc/apache2 folder there is no /etc/apache2/sites folder. I don't know what the junk is up with that. Neither the folder or the .conf file exist. I don't know if I'm just stupid or what. Don't know much about setting up apache. But in my Server app, "Websites" is up and running. Final Cut Server is even up and running in the System Preferences. I just have no way to download the client app. Has anyone else had this problem?

    And the file
    /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
    In mountain Lion is
    /Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/httpd_server_app.conf

  • Final Cut Pro 7 Mountain Lion Playback Freeze FIX

    Hello,
I'm still running Final Cut Pro 7 on Mountain Lion, and I ran into a problem where the program would freeze whenver I tried to play in both the canvas and the viewer. I seem to have fixed it on my computer, and wanted to share my fix in case anyone else ran into the same problem. I tried deleting both Final Cut and Quicktime's preferences, but that didn't fix anything. Then, I happened to look at the console, and discovered the following message right around the time that it froze:
8/7/12 11:11:53.244 AM Final Cut Pro[702]: Address book access is denied for executable at path: /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/Final Cut Pro
I thought that was odd, since I don't see any reason that FCP would need access to my address book, but I decided to go check in System Preferences -> Security and Privacy -> Privacy -> Contacts. I discovered that FCP was already listed there, and the checkbox for "Allow these apps to access your contacts" was unchecked, so I decided to check it. And then it worked! It no longer froze during playback. I have no idea how that relates to playback, but it definitely fixed it for me, and so I hope that maybe this well help someone else who is having trouble.

I've seen this issue with my mac pro 2008:
While the programs still work fine, one fundamental change that Apple has made in Mountain Lion is to push more of the responsibility for displaying the image on the computer monitor to the GPU of the graphics card. Previously these responsibilities were shared with the CPU. Therefore, if you have an older graphics card (even if it is fully compatible with FCPX, as ours are), FCP6/7 has a difficult time playing back 1080 video in the Canvas window (at any size), without breaking up when there is some degree of movement in the video image. The screen cannot refresh quickly enough to draw the video image without showing horizontal banding and some minor digital garbage.

  • Will Final Cut Studio Work with Lion?

I am considering upgrading my OS to Lion will I be able to use FCP Studio ?

    FCS 3 works.
FCS 2 will work if you install Rosetta from a mac OS X 10.6 disc first - the Installers are Power PC based.
FCS 1.5 (with FCP5.1) Maybe. It will also need Rosetta.
    Anything earlier will not work.

  • I want to install Final cut studio 2 on Mountain Lion OS

I have Final cut studio 2 and upgrade of 3 and brought a new MacBook Pro 15" Retina with Mountain Lion. Also brought a USB Super Drive to install FCP. But not able to install. Is anyone has any idea how do I go from here?

You don't need to install FCS 2 before the upgrade to FCS 3. Just install the FCS 3 upgrade, it will prompt you for the FCS 3 serial number, then ask for the last full version serial number (which I assume will be your copy of FCS 2). Successfully entering those serial numbers will get FCS 3 working on your computer.
Once installed, run Software Update from the Apple menu to get FCS 3 updated to the last version.
