Final Cut Studio 2 on Macbook?

Can I install FCP 6 on my Macbook? I´m using it on a Macbook Pro at work with great success but need the AVCHD function for private use..

I believe what Jim was referring to is that you cannot install FCP6 using your work license at home in your MacBook.
FCS2 does not permit that and once the information gets to Apple then the license will be affected.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Macbook (not Pro)

Curious to know if anyone has any experience running Final Cut Studio 2 on a non-pro Macbook. Can Macbook handle Final Cut Pro alright? Is video memory an issue?
    Thanks,
    Mbs

For the record, Motion will run on a MacBook. It's just that some of the features aren't supported, and will produce incorrect results. So I wouldn't rely on it.
Final Cut, however, works perfectly. No problems at all.

  • Final cut studio 2 and macbook pro 17?

I'm anxious to purchase Final Cut Studio 2, and a new MacBook Pro 17" laptop. Is FCS2 and this laptop 100% compatible? Will I be able to install and run FCS2 on this laptop successfully?
    Laptop specs:
MacBook Pro 17" Notebook 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, TI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics processor, dual -ink DVI support, 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, external 500G hard drive for video storage (firewire 800).
    MacBook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well those that have tried running FCS 2 on a 17" laptop can't talk. It's not released yet...
However there is no reason why it shouldn't work well. Add an Io HD to the mix, and you'll edit HD on it all day long... we were showing this in the AJA booth at NAB a couple of weeks ago. Apple was running it too on laptops in their booth...
Figure it should be fine. With the advent of Pro Res, there's little you couldn't edit on a MBP... however there are some things you'll not be editing with it, such as 2 k files, or uncompressed HD. Pro res takes care of that though. It's really visually lossless.

  • Final Cut Studio on the Macbook?

Im looking to get either a Macbook or Macbook Pro around september and want to put Final Cut Studio on it. Is the Macbook powerful enough to handle Final Cut Studio or will I need to get one of the higher end Macbook Pros?

So really, the only options I have is getting a Macbook Pro either 15 or 17 inch? Should I get the 17 inch with some upgrades so I can effectively run Final Cut Studio?

  • Problem installing Final Cut Studio 2 on MacBook Pro

I'm trying to install Final Cut Studio 2 on a MacBook Pro / Snow Leopard but when it comes to choosing install options Final Cut Pro is greyed out and just says skip.
I've done some research and found people with the same problem but none of the fixes I've seen have worked. I also have Logic Pro installed - which I installed first - which seems to be causing the problem. I've tried removing Logic but am still seeing the same problem.
Besides a clean install does anyone have any suggestions?

Read this article on how to install final cut pro after logic studio.

  • Final Cut Studio on a MacBook

Hi guys. I have an Intel iMac and I just love the way Final Cut and Motion outperform my boss' dual G5 on most video editing, graphics creation and rendering
However, its summer and I feel like I want to sell my Dell laptop to purchase one of the new macbooks (not pro, too much money) to use Final Cut on the road, coffee houses and alike.
But there is something I dont understand. According to the Final Cut webpage, Final Cut and Motion shouldnt even run at all. However, I've seen sites where they show benchmarks of "rendering" on both apps.
    So I get 2 questions.
1.- Can the macbook run Final Cut and Motion?
2.- How usable are both apps in the macbook? One thing is to open the program and render something, but a completly different story is to edit 10 layers of video at the same time, which is what I do in my iMac with no problem at all.
Well, any comments, suggestions and alike would be highly welcome and would make my decision whether to purchase a macbook or not.
    Thank you.

I guess one reason I'm advising you to wait and get the MacBook Pro is because you started out this thread with this statement:
I have an Intel iMac and I just love the way Final Cut and Motion outperform my boss' dual G5 on most video editing, graphics creation and rendering
You are not likely to see that kind of performance with the MacBook, so you may not "love" its performance the way you do your iMac's. You would likely see a similar performance with the MacBook Pro, which is one big reason why I answered the way I did.
    Back to your beginning questions:
    So I get 2 questions.
1.- Can the macbook run Final Cut and Motion?
Yes, but don't expect the kind of performance to which you've become accustomed.
2.- How usable are both apps in the macbook? One thing is to open the program and render something, but a completly different story is to edit 10 layers of video at the same time, which is what I do in my iMac with no problem at all.
Usable, but not as pleasing as the iMac's performance. Prepare to be underwhelmed. You probably are not going to "love" its performance. You won't be able to do as much as fast as you do with your iMac.

  • Final Cut Studio - Install on Two Macbook Pros?

I just purchased the academic version of Final Cut Studio. I have been reading the forums and have discovered that it is possible to install this on one desktop and one laptop, and both work as long as you are not working on them at the same time.
However, I have not been able to find if it is possible to install Final Cut Studio on two Macbook Pros. Does it have to be one desktop and one laptop or is it limited to two installations total? The license agreement says one desktop and one laptop, however how would it know if it were two laptops?
    Thank you for your feedback.

Used by you doesn't mean used by someone else that doesn't own the computer
I'm an editor. Been one for several years. Any company I've worked for and edited with FCP has been on the company's computer and software, not owned by me. Are you saying that an editor for a company is expected to purchase their own computer and software in order to edit for a cooperation? Unlikely. A freelance or independent editor may have their own system that they edit on, but I am talking about an editor as an employee at a cooperation (where personal computers are restricted) or Macs and software that are available at an educational institution like an Apple Authorized Training Center.
I went to Apple Campus as a requirement of becoming ACT and "used" Final Cut pro on a computer that was not owned by me. Several others have done this and will continue to do so because it's a loophole that is apparently intended in the SLA for these reasons. Unless you're saying that Apple is breaking their own SLA agreement and advising others to do so in their training facility requirements which states:
    The AATC is responsible for:
    • Providing all hardware and software described in this document
The definition of the word "used" in this circumstance begs further clarification. Until that happens one can assume that the ordinary circumstance of its meaning for this situation is open to various interpretations.
OK so let's say I agree with your comment even if I don't. It still doesn't mean that if I owned a laptop and desktop that I can't use both at the same time according to the SLA. Only that they can't both be used at the same time over a network. So If I was encoding or rendering video on my desktop I could still use the laptop to edit at the same time.

  • Installing Final Cut Studio Now Safari doesn't show QT

I just installed Final Cut Studio on my Macbook running 10.4.7 which installs version 7.1.2 of quicktime pro. But now Safari won't play any quicktime movies though my Firefox and Flock browsers will play QTmovies. I'd download and reinstall quicktime normally but Final Cut Studio doesn't give me a serial number for QTPro so I suspect that if I reinstall quicktime I'll wind up with no more quicktime pro or at the minimum I'd have to uninstall Final Cut Studio and reinstall to get QTPro and might be back in the same loop
Anyone have any experience with this or think of a way around getting Safari to show quicktime movies?

But now Safari won't play any quicktime movies though my Firefox and Flock browsers will play QTmovies.< </div>
You might try the Quicktime forum here on apple.com. All I can tell you is that yours is the first post I can recall describing this particular issue with an installation of FCP.
I'd download and reinstall quicktime normally but Final Cut Studio doesn't give me a serial number for QTPro so I suspect that if I reinstall quicktime I'll wind up with no more quicktime pro or at the minimum I'd have to uninstall Final Cut Studio and reinstall to get QTPro and might be back in the same loop< </div>
Your Pro license is part of the FCP install now so it will be still be there, it's not associated with the QTPlayer any longer.
You can force a reload of earlier versions of QT by going to your Library and searching for receipts for QT updates. Delete them and Software Update will pull down a new update file for you.
Umm, on second thought, wait for a few more hours till some other folks respond to your inquiry.

  • I can't get Final Cut back on my Macbook Pro

When I first installed Final Cut Studio on my Macbook Pro back in 2007, I manually removed the apps I didn't use that often to save space b/c my hard drive was almost full. I eventually removed all the apps from Studio, dragging them all to the trash can. Also deleted their folders in Library -> App Support to make room on the hard drive.
But now when I try reinstall these apps from the installation discs, Final Cut and others (like Soundtrack, Motion, etc.) are grayed out on the list, so I can't install them.
Did I go about deleting them in an incorrect manner that is now preventing me from adding them back?

You're wasting time because you have chosen to without provision. The first act performed upon receiving Final Cut installation disks is to create disk images of the application disks. Not only for backup but for time saving. Then if/when the time comes that you have to re-install the application you simply mount the disk images and perform the installation from them. This saves you the time of having to manually be there to swap through the DVD installation disks and the application is installed much faster because the installation is being read from your HD vs. the DVD's. Not to mention the time it takes to create the disk images in the first place mind you. Just do that during your off time. Create one when you wake up, one during your morning bike ride, one during your lunch hour, one during your evening bike ride, one during dinner, one while you're watching Survivor, and one before bed. Then boom - the next time you come into trouble and have to re-install everything from OS up you're optimized for a quick turnaround on your FCS re-installation. I do this for Macs in the classroom that need to be wiped clean for new lessons.
It takes about 15 mins. to install Snow Leopard on a blank HD and about and hour and a half to install FCS3 from the DVD's. Hardly a day or two. You can cut the FCS3 installation down to about 15 mins. if the application is saved to disk images on a mounted hard drive. So within 30 mins. you'll have a fresh OS and FCS installation using the method described.

  • Can I move Final Cut Studio from a MBP to a new iMac?

I'm buying a new iMac tomorrow and I want to be sure that I can move Final Cut Studio from my Macbook Pro over to the new iMac. I have all of the original install DVD's and serial numbers and so on. Just a customer wanting to make an informed purchase.
    Thanks,

    It should install without problems.

  • Final Cut Studio bloatware blues

I just purchased a used late-model MacBook Pro and Final Cut Studio.
The MacBook Pro (MBP) has a 120 GB internal hard drive. I made sure to buy a Sonnet Express34 card with extra FireWire ports so I can split the buses (my Canon camcorder has a FireWire bug) and use an external FireWire hard drive without any problem.
One thing I discovered when moving up from Final Cut Pro 4.5 and DVD Studio Pro 2 is that the new Studio is HUGE! Of the 111 GB of usable hard drive capacity in the MBP, only 28 GB remain with Studio and OS 10.4.10 on-board. I haven't even had a chance to install my other non-video software yet.
My concern right now is that I need to find room and something's got to go. I have use for Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and maybe Soundtrack and maybe LiveType. I am not interested in Motion.
    Any suggestions?

In the Library>Application Support folder, you will find additional content files (templates, sound loops, etc.) that supplement the apps themselves-- this is where nearly all your space is going. If you don't use Motion, there is Motion content you can delete. If you don't use the templates in DVDSP, there's another thing. Look around, and see what you will or won't use. If you accidently trash something, you can always reinstall it.

  • How to remove Final Cut Studio content, extras, etc?

    Hi,
I want to say that I do not want to delete the apps. What I want to do is only remove the extra content.
Essentially, I installed the entire Final Cut Studio on my MacBook Pro and am realizing I should not have done the complete install (eats up hard drive like no tomorrow).
So.. any / all advice would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks!

In Motion, open the Motion preferences found in the Motion menu... on the front page you see the path names to templates and livefonts... If you remove them, you could place them on another drive like a FW drive... and access them that way.
In Livetype, The media files are located in Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/LifeType/Templates. You could move them, then add their new location to the window that opens when you select LiveType's Preferences. Then LT will look for templates in this new location.
In DVD SP, the location of styles and templates is near the same path as in LiveType, however in the DVD SP folder. To reset them to a new location, the preferences for DVD SP you can change the location of where DVD SP looks for these...
I'd not want to lose them altogether, but you won't hurt anything doing so... I'd put them on an external drive and reset where the various apps look for them, and if all is well, delete the originals...

  • Universal Final Cut Studio

If I am buying a brand new version of Final Cut Studio for my MacBook, msut I also buy the upgrade to make it Universal or will that be included. Thanks,
    Ben

That's a great question. We seem to be in a 'tweener period of time at the moment. The FCSU version won't start shipping for a week or two or so, but the MacBook Pro is shipping now.
Call Apple Sales and ask. On Monday morning, of course.
