Final Cut Studio 2 / OS Lion

I just bought a new iMac anticipating that I would be able to use my employer's copy of Final Cut Studio 2.
This evidently is not the case at all.
The end result I am seeking is really to have a decent editing program along with compressor or something comparable with which to export.  Motion would be great, but I wouldn't be torn up, as long as I had something better than iMovie with which to edit.
My question is in my situation what would be the most cost effective plan (without purchasing Final Cut Studio X or spending more than the cost of the new 21.5'' iMac I purchased)?
- Return the computer and look for a used Mac with Snow Leopard?
- Would a FCS 3 upgrade even work, if I could find one?
- I don't necessarily understand the specifics of the PowerPC dilemma, and is this a hardware problem with new iMacs?  That is, if I used a different operating system, such as linux on the new iMac would I be able to load FCS 2?
I have looked around a few times through Message Boards, but haven't seemed to find anything on a user who has purchased a new iMac with the factory preset as OS Lion.
Any suggestions or leads would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

Cool Nick. I came across your post later. I'm not really a big tech guy so I was hoping there was an easy fix but at least you're providing an option.
I'm shocked that Apple would do this (not allow FC6 to work on Lion). For a company that prides itself on being very consumer friendly and making life simple....this *****. I spent $1,800 + CDN thinking ya, let's go the legit route and actually buy software that will last me a few years but now I have this cool looking Apple box which I may end up using as a foot stool!
Hope you tech guys can figure something out or even better....maybe someone at Apple will fix this!

how works final cut studio with lion?

The thing to take from FCPX is that it isn't an update/upgrade from 7. It's an entirely new editor. As a professional video editor myself for 5 years, I felt just as hesitant as you when I first saw what Apple had done. However, I committed myself to biting the bullet for a little while to get comfortable with the new workflow, and I can vouch for Apple's new move toward this type of setup. It has improved my workflow enough to where I can confidently say I deliver projects, on average, in half the time, with no sacrifice to quality.
Give it another chance, if you can afford it. With a bit of training, and time into using it, you'll see it's a superior editor to FCP 7

  • How can I install Final Cut Studio 2 on my new MacBook Pro with Lion?

I just purchased and received a new 15" MacBook Pro (non-retina) last week. I need to install Final Cut Studio 2 on this computer. I have researched this and found that I need to install Rosetta from the Snow Leopard DVD in order to do this. This is the first Mac I've bought ( although I've been working with them for years), so I don't have a Snow Leopard DVD. I am a high school teacher and we use FCS 2 for my classes so buying FCP X is not a viable option for me since I teach FCP 6. The iMacs we use in school run Leopard and were never upgraded to Snow Leopard (budget cuts and all), so I can't even borrow one from my district.
Does anyone know how I can obtain Rosetta? Or another way to install this without it?
    Thank you ! :)

There is no way to add Rosetta support because it is not supported by OS X Lion at system level. This has been documented before the release of OS X Lion by itself.
If you really need Final Cut Studio 2, I would return your computer if possible, and purchase a Mac that is capable of running Snow Leopard (all 2010 models, early 2011 MBP and some other 2011 models)

  • I want to install Final cut studio 2 on Mountain Lion OS

I have Final cut studio 2 and upgrade of 3 and brought a new MacBook Pro 15" Retina with Mountain Lion. Also brought a USB Super Drive to install FCP. But not able to install. Is anyone has any idea how do I go from here?

You don't need to install FCS 2 before the upgrade to FCS 3. Just install the FCS 3 upgrade, it will prompt you for the FCS 3 serial number, then ask for the last full version serial number (which I assume will be your copy of FCS 2). Successfully entering those serial numbers will get FCS 3 working on your computer.
Once installed, run Software Update from the Apple menu to get FCS 3 updated to the last version.

  • Can i install Final cut studio 5 and DVD Studio Pro 4 on OSX lion

Is any body who can help me on giving me some direction on how to install Final Cut Studio 5.1 and DVD Studio Pro 4 on my OSX Lion, if it's doable. Thanks

The easiest way is to install Rosetta from a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD first.
There's also a way of doing it via Terminal that's been posted here a couple of times. A search should bring that up.
Edit: Found it... https://discussions.apple.com/message/21416133#21416133 read the second post.

  • I am trying to install Final cut pro studio V1.0.1 (2005) on OS X lion. I get a message "You can't open the application final cut studio.mpkg because power pc application are no longer supported

I am trying to install Final cut pro 5 studio V1.0.1 (2005) on OS X lion. I get a message "You can't open the application final cut studio.mpkg because power pc application are no longer supported. My computer is New. Is their a link I can go to get tech support?

You won't find any help at tech support ... other than telling you the facts: Intel processor Macs require FCP 5.1 or higher.  FCP 5.0 and earlier were written for PowerPC processor Macs, long before Apple switched to using Intel processors.
And then there's the issue of the OS.  OS 7 will allow FCP 7 (and sometimes even FCP 6) to work OK, but versions earlier than that have spotty operation on Lion.
Here's a brief history of full FCP versions and recommended OS compatibility:
    * = requires PPC             ** = works with both PPC and Intel                          *** = require Intel
    FCP 1.0*       OS 9
    FCP 2.0*       OS 9
    FCP 3.0*       OS 9, OS 10.1, OS 10.2
    FCP 4.0*       OS 10.2, 10.3
    FCP 4.5*       OS 10.3
    FCP 5.0*       OS 10.3 (OS 10.4?)
    FCP 5.1**     OS 10.4, 10.5
    FCP 6.0**     OS 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 (OS 10.7?)
    FCP 7.0***    OS 10.6, OS 10.7
    FCP-X***       OS 10.6, OS 10.7
Essentially, you have a newer Intel processor Mac with a new OS and very old, incompatible software.   You might be able to find a used version of Final Cut Studio 3 on sites like ebay or craigslist as it is no longer offered by Apple as an upgrade.
Alternatively, you could purchase and download FCP-X, but it is an entirely different application, sharing virtually nothing with previous versions of FCP.

  • Opening Final Cut Studio 3 Projects on Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) & MacBook Pro (Lion)

    Hi Everyone,
Right i've been trawling the forums in regards to Lion's compatibility with Final Cut Studio 3. There seemed to be a mixed bag of reports, some running FCP fine on Lion, others having issues.
For this reason alone I decided to keep my main editing system, my Mac Pro, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and not upgrade to Lion.
More and more frequently i've thought I need to get myself a MacBook Pro, for data wrangling on location and for some cheeky edit sessions when i'm away on jobs.
The thing is, all new MacBook Pros ship with Lion as their OS.
My question is twofold really. Firstly, I've read that Final Cut Studio 3 installs and runs fine on Lion systems, can anyone confirm this?
Secondly, do any of you know if i'll be able to swap between, and freely work on projects across the two different systems, namely a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and a MacBook Pro running Lion? is this an issue at all?
The last thing I want to do is spend three grand on a MacBook and then realise I have issues opening or working on projects from my MacPro (or vise-vesa)
As ever, your help would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

I've read that Final Cut Studio 3 installs and runs fine on Lion systems, can anyone confirm this?
Yes, FCS 3 installs and runs without issue on my Lion system.
There are a couple of careats however  with the primary one being  DO A CLEAN INSTALL OF THE OS AND THE APPS. Upgrade installs over major version changes are problematic.
do any of you know if i'll be able to swap between, and freely work on projects across the two different systems, namely a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and a MacBook Pro running Lion? is this an issue at all?
Again, not an issue in my world.

  • Final Cut Studio 5 on Lion

    Hi Everybody,
A few years ago I bought the very expensive complete Final Cut Studio 5.
Is it true that this can not be installed on the latest Lion 10.8.2 ?
If so what a waste of money as I find Final Cut Pro X pretty basic and definitely not as professional as FCP5 and later versions.
    Thanks for your insights.

    Thoughts....
FCP 5 being expensive: Back when it was sold, it was one of the cheapest professional options out there. Cheaper than Avid...cheaper than Adobe Creative suite.
Age: FCP 5 is 6+ years old.  First off, in terms of monitary return, you should have easily made up the cost of the application by now, if you use it to earn a living.  Recouped your cost.
Second...6+ years in terms of software is VERY old.  Asking it to run on current OS software...no matter what app and OS we are talking about...is asking a lot.  This is one reason many software companies don't upgrade their OS...to remain compatible with the software they need.  This will run perfectly fine on an older machine running 10.3, through 10.6. And if it is FCP 5.1, it will work on Intel macs. If it is 5.0...it will only run on PowerPCs, so you will be stuck needing to use a G5 or other PowerPC mac.
    Options:
    - Find a copy of FCP 7 (Final Cut Studio 3) on ebay.  Sorry, it won't be cheap either...the asking price I'm finding matches what it initially sold for. Very in demand app.
    - Look at Adobe CS 6...Premiere Pro CS6 if you only want the app.  You don't need to shell out $1700 all at once if you want, there's the Creative Cloud that enables you to rent it for $50 a month.  That's $600 a year...and all the upgrades are free as long as you do that.
    - Look at Avid Symphony or Media Composer.  There is crossgrade pricing for FCP users.
    http://community.avid.com/forums/t/114517.aspx
    - Stick to an older machine and older OS if you insist on sticking with FCP 5.  It will work fine. It just won't be state of the art, and won't work with a majority of newer cameras.

  • How is final cut studio 7 working with lion

I am still in snow leapard, 10.6.8 and useing Final Cut Studio 7 and Logic 9, i have been considering moving to  Lion and looking for some feed back on the compatability of FCP7 and Logic 9 with LION, for the past few months the word on the street has been mixed, it is now mid jan 2012 is there any clear info on the compatablity of these programs with lion?

What are the benefits you perceive in moving from SL to Lion? Some people report FCS problems and others don't.
If you do move, clone your systems drive…just in case.
    Good luck.

  • Lion 10.7.1 WiFi & Final Cut Studio 3

    Hi there,
i have made a strange detection with Lion WiFi and my Final Cut Studio 3.
When Wifi is enabled FCS3 boots very slow and apple´s "colorwheel of fortune" is spinning for about 10 - 20 seconds before the windows appear.
By quitting FCS3 it takes about 5-6 sec. till the windows close and about 30 sec. till the app disappears in the taskmanager.
Now the strange thing. When Wifi is disabled everything works fine without any delay !!! Very fast !! Thats´s how it should be. click-open-window / quit - close - ready.
What the **** is that?? Why would the Wifi bother the FCS3 startup?? Any conclusion?
I even tried blocking FCS3 connecting to somewhat by LittleSnitch.
Right now the solution is to switch WiFi off when working with FCS3. Very Strange.... and the known graphicserrors as well
C´mon Apple .. YOU CAN DO IT !!
    Thx in advance
    bye

    My specs:
2011 imac 27" i7 SSD, 1 TB, 2 GB Vram, 8 GB Ram - came with Lion. Latest upgrades are done.

This is indeed a weird issue.
The thing is now that I turned my mac off and came back to it, I played around with the display profiles (in system preferences) and went back to the original profile. It then suddenly fixed the gamma issue to how it should be in FCP7.
I'm not understanding to how it's fixed itself as it doesn't make sense to why it played correctly in quicktime but not in the Final Cut Studio Apps, but I'm very happy indeed, saving me time to downgrade again. I can also explore the MacAppStore...
What do you recommend as the best display profile to select in the System Preferences?
    Cheers everyone.

  • Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade version and Lion

I was all set to buy a new Macbook Pro, and I know Final Cut Studio 3 will run on Lion, but I've just realised that my version of Studio is an upgrade from 2. Since Studio 2 doesnt seem compatible with Lion am I at a dead end here in trying to get FCP 7 etc onto a new machine? Can I install it without installing Studio 2 first?
    Thanks

You just do the install for studio 3.  Or am I missing something?  It will ask you for both the serial numbers of fcp studio 2 and 3.  But you will have to install rosetta from a snowleopard install disk to run the installer.

  • How can I Final cut studio 5.1 running on osx lion

I have a old version (Final Cut Studio 5.1) and I would like to use with OSX lion. How can I make that run, don´t want to downgrade!!!!!

I want a brand new Jaguar and a 4000 acre ranch in Wyoming.  But just like in your case, it ain't gonna happen.
You'll either need to upgrade the software or downgrade the OS.

  • I need to reinstall Final Cut Studio 2 in Lion

    Please, sorry for my english.
Well, past week i upgrade to Lion. Everything is perfect, but i has Final Cut Studio 2 installed, everything goes ok, but today, i need to run Cinema Tools, and it crashes every time i try to.
I think the only thing i can do is reinstall Cinema Tools, but i can't install FCS 2 in Lion.
    ¿Any Solution?
I've paid for FCS and it is what i need now to work, i dont need FCS3 or FCPX, i don't wanna pay for it. But i need Cinema Tools running....
    Thanks.

Cinema Tools is crashing on my brand new MacBook Pro as well. I can reinstall everything but FCP. However, reinstalling Cinema Tools has not solved anything. It still won't open.

  • Final Cut Studio and Mountain Lion?

Not finding a clear answer anywhere.  Can I install Mountain Lion over Snow Leopard, and have the new ML system recognize my Final Cut Studio (7) and its ancillary apps like Color and Soundtrack Pro?
I don't have the time to re-install the whole FCP shebang.  But I would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Ben

    Thank you mishmumken ...
I remember how long it took to do the last install.  And my FCP is running sooooo smoothly.  And my discs are sitting in another city ... a two day drive to fetch ... or a border to cross if I have them shipped.  Tsk tsk tsk.
Maybe I'll do the Mountain Lion on my laptop, to try it out ... and see if my currently installed FCP will still run properly (you do say 'it is recommended', but maybe not absolutely required, my risk).  And not touch the tower, where I do most of my work anyhow.
    Very much appreciated mish,
    Ben
