Hi
Very new to the FCP world and wondered should i have any problems importing video from the above camcorder?
I.e does Final Cut 6 (i have latest update) support it.

Your first point,
Convert to Pro Res and bring these files into FCP. MPEG Streamclip is free and will give you great results or you could pay for Clipwrap which also gives great results.
On your second point,
From the manual
Touch P MENU / HDD SET /
[EMPTY HDD] / [YES] / YES].
When [Completed.] is displayed, touch OK
This will erase your HDD

Beginner Final Cut Studio 7 Sony HVR-A1J

I am a beginner to final cut. I have a Sony HDV-A1J. I am having a hard time figuring out what the sequence preset, capture preset and device control preset should be for me. Yes I realize that I am using a Japanease model of the camera. But I was told that it doesnt matter that it can use NTFS. I am in the US. Any help on how I can set it up so I can log and capture would be greatly appreciated. I am using a ilink cable.

Your first task is to verify what format you shot in. That camera is, I believe, capable of shooting both HDV and DV, and well as widescreen DV.
Once you have your recording format verified, you need to make sure the camera is feeding the correct video to the iLink connector on the camera. The camera has a menu setting that, if turned on, will down convert the HDV to DV at the iLink port, if you want to work in HD than you want to make sure that feature is turned off.
Turn off the Mac. Now connect the camera, make sure it is powered on and set to the VTR mode,startup the Mac, and when ready launch FCP.
In FCP, go to the menu Final Cut Pro > Easy Set Up and (if working with HDV) select USE: HDV1080i60, leave Format:All Formats and Rate:All Rates, and click Set Up.
If you shot Standard Definition DV, then, in the Easy Set Up pane choose USE:DV-NTSC.
If you shot Standard Definition DV in widescreen, then in the Easy Set Up pane choose USE:DV-NTSC Anamorphic.
Once you have clicked Set Up, you should be good to go. Go to the menu You should have the camera powered from the AC adaptor. If you are using the iLink cable, make sure you have the one the converts the iLink from 4 pin on the camera side to either 6 pins if you have Firewire 400 ports, or 9 pins if you have Firewire 800 ports. Try not to use an adaptor cable, use one that had the correct pin connector on each end.
If you do all this and still have no luck, if you have been making lots of selections of the settings, especially with the camera plugged in, there is a good chance you have corrupted the FCP preferences.

Using Final Cut Express With Sony DCR-TRV480

Hello all,
This is a well known newbie problem and i have came across it before with a different camera and do not remember a fix. Whenever i launch Final Cut Express i get the message "Unable to locate the following devices. Apple FireWire NTSC (720x480)". The camera is clearly connected via fire-wire and turned on. Any insight or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any other firewire devices connected to your Mac at the same time your camcorder is connected? If so, try it with only the camcorder connected.
Is your camcorder turned on in VCR (aka VTR) mode?
What versions of FCE and QuickTime are on your Mac?
Your profile says you are running OS X 10.6.3 - is that correct?

Final Cut Studio 2 and Sony SR1e | AVCHD Format

I'am new to this forum and can't find any useful information regarding the support of the AVCHD-Format used by Sony's SR1e.
So does the latest Final Cut Studio 2 support the .mts AVCHD Format by the SR1E?
I see Sony in the partner list, but the cam is not on the device list.
I found some scripting and complicated ways to convert the .mts to mpeg, but maybe there is a smarter solution out there?
Or is it really true, that I have to use the Nero Burning Application on Windows to convert the AVCHD's instead of the latest Final Cut Studio editing software?
btw: Squared 5's Streamclip Software is not able to convert the .mts files.

Not sure about FCS2 but you do have options with a capture card and bring in to FC in many different codecs. Depending on your computer you could use a Black Magic Intensity card for the all digital HDMI port on this camera and bring it in as DVC PRO HD and edit in an all digital all I frame codec. Even if Apple comes out with support for this AVCHD you may still want to avoid it as most HDV shooter/editors do.

Sony HDR-CX7 and Final Cut Studio 2 ???

Hey there people,
I live in Australia and I am new to this forum & couldn't actually locate a specific thread for my questions so hopefully anyone could be of assistance.
Basically, I have just bought a Macbook Pro 2.4ghz notebook, Final Cut Studio 2 and a Sony HDR-CX7 hi def camcorder.
Has anyone come across issues with Final Cut Studio picking up the hi def clips straight from the Sony camcorder when you try to import files to Final Cut? After some research, it seems as though this can simply be fixed by buying a FireWire cable to connect from the camcorder straight to the FireWire port on the notebook. Is this correct??
Any assistance would be great or if anyone knows of a link to a thread specifically for the Sony HDR-CX7 and Final Cut Studio 2. The standard def seems to work ok but the hi def isn't picked up on either the Macbook direct or Final Cut Studio. I just would like to ensure that i am able to use the camcorder hi def with Final Cut

You should be able to transfer from the camera to FCP through the log and transfer window with a FW cable... FCP 6.0.1 added AVCHD support anyway...

Final Cut Studio 6 and Sony Deck HVRM15U

Is Final Cut Studio 6 compatible with the Sony HVRM15U deck. NTSC Format connecting to Mac with Firewire and recording back to tape from Final Cut.

I bought the HVR-M15U Deck last week but I am having difficulty understanding the Menu settings. I intend to transfer HDV video (mini-DV tape) from the deck to FCP and then from FCP out to the Deck on a full size DV tape. I have connected firewire directly to the computer (no 3rd party capture card) and FCP tells me that my device capture pre-sets are wrong. I used Easy Set-up for HDV. Is there something I need to do with the Deck's menu setting so that I match up with FCP? Also I tried capturing from the deck to imove 08. imovie does control the deck but I get no image in the imovie capture screen on import. Anyone used the deck with imovie 08?

Can anyone tell me if they have successfully used a Sony HVR-M15P VTR tape deck in Final Cut Studio. On the compatibility list a Sony HVR-M15U is there. Is this the same deck but Pal Version?

yes I have used the deck to firewire import to FCP on a powerbook G4 1.67Ghz from tapes recorded on sony a1 hdv and a canon MV6i dv cameras with no problems.

Final Cut Pro with Sony PMW-EX1 HD camera

I am about to purchase the new Sony PMW-EX1 camera that I plan to use with my MacPro.
For those who use that camera, could you advise if my current version of Final Cut Studio 1 paired with Mac OS 10.4.10 will work fine with this camera when capturing the clips from the SxS card and editing the clips with FCP. Or is it strongly advisable to get Final Cut Studio 2 and/or the new Leopars OS environment?

The only program to transcode the EX series mp4 files is ffmpegX, ffmpegX.com Compressor doesn't work with these files, "Error trying to open source media file."
You can open the transferred file (that is re-wrapped as a QuickTime .mov) with Compressor to transcode to DVC ProHD, but then you could just use MPEG Streamclip as it is much faster and easier and can batch transcode many clips at one time. www.squared5.com
And again you need FC 6.0.2 to edit with the XD Cam EX series codec.
Working with EX series XD Cam HQ recorded files produces many files inside the BPAV folder that are needed for what various NLE's and computer platform you are working with. You will need the 2.7 XD Cam Transfer software to convert the raw XD Cam files to a QuickTime .mov to edit in Final Cut. With file based media you must use a well organization file system and learn to guard the BPAV folder only placing it inside a separate folder of it's own and naming it properly for archiving. This BPAV folder must never be place with any other BPAV folders and must always be kept in a separate folder to work properly with the XD Cam Transfer software. To work in Final Cut you are going to use the XD Cam Transfer software that makes new .mov files and you must find a place for them to be stored as well. At the end of your edit you have choices to either keep both the raw XD Cam files (mp4) and the new Quicktime .mov files, I keep them both or if I don't have the storage room I keep the raw, this allows me the ability to work on any software platform (PC or Mac) later. You can use the new Clip Browser version to transcode to other codecs and to prepare for SD DVD archiving.

What Mac to get for Final Cut Studio?

I've been doing most of my video editing for the last year or so in Sony Vegas on a PC. I'm looking to get into it a bit more seriously and want to make the switch to Final Cut Studio.
Can I run it on a Macbook Pro? Can I run it WELL on a Macbook Pro? Currently I'm running Sony Vegas on a PC with a Q9350 quad-core CPU, 4gb ram, and an 8800GT graphics card, and I'm not fully satisfied with the way it runs (encoding times are fine, but it's difficult to preview within the software with any semi-complex effects added). What should I be looking for in terms of processing speed and whatnot here? Could I get away with the 13 or 15 inch Macbook pros and still run things well?
Hard drive size is not an issue, as everything will be archived to a server.

It depends on which MBP, what type of video you are editing, and other factors.
Remember as well that FCS3 2009 includes FCP, DVDSP, Compressor, Color, Motion, and Cinema Tools, some of which are GPU based in part.

The software is the same; the only difference is that you cannot upgrade an academic version and you have to be able to qualify for the academic pricing (students and teachers).

MBP and final cut studio 2?

I have the latest MBP 2.66 with 4 gb of ram and im buying final cut studio 2 and was wondering if it will run fine? I also was wondering if 4 gb of ram is enough? Or should i upgrade to 6 gb of ram? thank you! Can i also edit FULL HD video and still run ok?

I'm running FCS2 on the latest MCP 17" with 2.66, 4gb and faster drive. Any other upgrades just weren't worth the cash when considering bang for our buck.
If you haven't already, you will need some hefty external drive space, especially when you start working with FCP. I have a Taurus Super-S Combo with two 1TB drives in mirror config. I have this device mapped via an eSATA2 express card.
So far all seems good.
I'm currently shooting on a Sony A1 in DVCAM mode. I haven't put any HD into it yet, so maybe someone else can help in that regard.

Final Cut Studio on MacBook Pro

Will all Final Cut Studio 2 programs and features run efficiently on a new MacBook Pro 13"? If not, what MacBook Pro would be the cheapest to run it on?

I just upgraded to a new 3.06 GHz 17 inch MacBookPro with 4 GB of RAM from the previous generation 17 inch MacBookPro with a 2.33 GHz processor. I have noticed a tremendous increase in performance and ability to render and export with ease and alacrity.
Having said that, my general question is: Does anyone have any general advice for hardware/ video setup configurations? I am very well versed with iMovie (ha!), and now I am seriously trying to graduate to Final Cut Studio. I have made a few clips and played around with various transitions, filters, etc, but does anyone have advice for what settings I should be using?
Oh yeah, I have a Sony AVCHD Camcorder (HDR-CX7)... I am not a fan of the CMOS chip, but nonetheless, it is what I have at the moment.
Any feedback will be appreciated.
