Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade version and Lion

I was all set to buy a new Macbook Pro, and I know Final Cut Studio 3 will run on Lion, but I've just realised that my version of Studio is an upgrade from 2. Since Studio 2 doesnt seem compatible with Lion am I at a dead end here in trying to get FCP 7 etc onto a new machine? Can I install it without installing Studio 2 first?

You just do the install for studio 3. Or am I missing something? It will ask you for both the serial numbers of fcp studio 2 and 3. But you will have to install rosetta from a snowleopard install disk to run the installer.

Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade from FCS 2

What is the main difference between the Final Cut Studio 3 Upgrade version and the full retail version? I already have FCS 2 installed with all content but wonder if there's anything missing from the upgrade version compared to the full installation. Is it just the applications that are updated or is there any new content that I'll be missing with the upgrade?

And why would you trust us? We don't work for Apple and it is unlikely one of us will purchase both versions - so how would we know?
When in doubt, throw money in the general direction of uncertainty. It won't be a better solution but you'll feel that you've done everything possible to acquire the best solution. You'll also have the benefit if being able to sell your old FCS version on ebay because you won't need its serial number as a basis for the upgrade.

I'm with Jim on this. It always seems to work out better if you do not install over another version. You can use this app (freeware - thanks to Jon Chappel) to completely remove ALL Final Cut Studio apps and components: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
Once that's done, install your newly purchased version.

If i buy final cut studio 2 and then get final cut studio 3 upgrade will it be final cut studio 3

ive been looking around to buy final cut studio 3 for weeks now with no success and i think ive found a solution i'm just wondering if it will work by buying final cut studio 2 full and then buying final cut studio 3 upgrade overall will everything be final cut studio 3?

You can still get the FCS3 upgrades from the apple shop
No you can not get FCS upgrades from Apple retail stores or Apple dealers, they have been recalled by Apple.
Only places that will stock is independant retailers and online used software vendors.
Apple have clearly stated that FCS is now ''end of life''

FInal Cut Studio 3 Upgrade - Sluggish

I've recently installed the Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade (incl. FCP7) and have found playback to be super slow and crashes often. I've also just exported two simple ProRes files to compressor and found it incredibly sluggish. Is there anything that I'm missing in the upgrade?

Actually the upgrade is able to be used on computers with no previous versions installed as long as you have the original Retail Serial Number which it will ask for.
Your installation method sounds perfectly OK.
I was really interested in whether you had upgraded the OS to Snow Leopard, as this can sometimes cause problems together with the accumulated rubbish that inevitably appears after a year or so of use.
I found that after upgrading to SL and then upgrading to FCS3, my computer generally was not performing well.
A complete erase of the hard drive and a reinstallation of everything made it good as new.

If you don't have any version of fcp, you might try going on Ebay and find a legit copy of an earlier version. Not sure which versions are upgradable. Probably some research is in order.

Final Cut Studio 3 Upgrade P/N MB643Z/A How many Disks?

Hi! I have my Final Cut Studio 3 Upgrade disk set P/N MB643Z/A SKU 8859092445284 for sale on ebay (300781404751), the auction closes in 3 hours, I have 6 DVD disks. From my pictures I see I have one white and 5 Black disks. I had a person tell me I am missing a disk, that there should be 7 disks in total. I hope someone can help me by confirming how many disks I should have and the title of each of them. Also, If I have one missing, do I have any chance of getting one from Apple? and how I would go about getting it? Thanks very much!

White one is FINAL CUT INSTALL DVD...this has all the apps. THen the black ones are:

Final Cut Studio 2 Upgrade Question

Hi
I have a Final Cut Studio 1 installed on my laptop. I still have the original install discs and serial number.
I recently purchased Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade from a "reputable" source on ebay....but it came with NO serial number.
I have heard that if I send the discs to Apple they will supply me with a new Serial Number. Is this true?

The serial number sticker(s) come affixed to the front of the booklet titled "Installing Your Software." If you did not receive the serial number, and ALL of the documentation, the purchase is not legitimate according to Apple's Software License Agreement (SLA):
"3. Transfer. You may not rent, lease, lend, sell, redistribute or sublicense the Apple Software. You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, original media, printed materials and this License; (b) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (c) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License. Final Cut Studio 2 (Academic Version)

I am a teacher and we have ordered and received 4 Final Cut Studio 2 packages. It came to us as the academic version. I know you cannot get upgrade to future Final Cut Studio packages, but is that the only difference?
Does it have all of the other features that regular Final Cut Studio has?

Final Cut Studio Academic Upgrade to FCS 2??

So, I just recently bought the Final Cut Studio 5.1 set, but seeing as how I'm a broke college kid, I bought the academic. Can I still upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2? Do I just buy the 499 upgrade? Just a little curious. Thanks in advance

Sadly you cannot. However, if you are a college student, you can always acquire the full academic FCS2 for the academic price. If you check the Apple website (store) it's quite clear on these issues, both when you buy and when you try to upgrade.
It's actually less expensive in the long term to buy a full version and then upgrade. That is, if you're planning on staying with the FCS ship for some time.

Slow Rendering Time After Installing Final Cut Studio 2 Upgrade

I have a Mac Pro with two dual core processors, 8 GB of Ram, and 1 Terabyte of storage. I'm running the latest version of OSX. Ever since I upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 my rendering time in Final Cut Pro 6 has become painfully slow. For example, it now takes at least an hour to render a short 5 minute video project. A project that size used to take just a few minutes. I uninstalled Final Cut Studio using AppZapper because I couldn't figure out how to remove the program any other way. Then, I reinstalled Final Cut Pro 6, but it didn't fix the problem. I called Apple's Final Cut Studio tech support, but they just had me upgrade Final Cut Pro 6 to 6.0.1. Unfortunately, this didn't fix the problem. Everything worked fine with Final Cut Pro 5, but ever since we upgraded everything has fell apart. Can anyone give us any insight into fixing this problem? So far, Apple's Final Cut tech support has been unable to find a solution.

Just a couple things to double check.
1. Repair Disk permissions, RESTART.
2. Try setting your RENDER DRIVE to something Different than the Media drive, RESTART.
3. Try Hosting your Media on a new Drive, RESTART.
Also, at this point since you are having system problems, I would backup all of your Media, Projects, etc. I just read a post of someone else that didn't have backup of their project and it became corrupted. I use Lacies SilverKeeper to automatically backup about 20 times a day, so we have dupes of at least all our Projects. And the first thing I do every morning is start the system up, repair disk permissions, and RESTART.
The reason why I suggest restarting after each attempt at changing preferences and such is so that the next time you load FCP it loads the settings that you have saved/changed as native settings as opposed to changed settings, this does make a difference. You will know what I am talking about if you have experienced the Log & Capture Input problem for FCP 5.
Let me know, I have some other suggestions if these don't work.

Final Cut Studio 2 Upgrade

I've got an old version of FCP and I've just purchased the upgrade to FCS 2.
My question is, when the next version of FCS (FCS 3?) comes out, what upgrade would I be entitled to now that I've went from FCP to FCS 2? Would I need to purchase an upgrade for FCP again, or would I be considered a FCS 2 user at that point?
If the pricing for the next FCS is how it is now, there is a significant pricing difference when purchasing an upgrade from FCP or FCS 1. Thanks.

Can't say what is going to happen since it hasn't happened yet but judging from the past when you upgrade to a new version of Final Cut the upgrade is equivalent to the full version. Meaning if there is an upgrade option you may use your newest version to upgrade to next version. When you upgrade you are upgrading from a full version so you still need the full version disk and serial number. Hypothetical scenario would be you purchased Final Cut Pro 4 full version then upgraded from that to Final Cut Studio 1. If you wanted to upgrade to FCS@ you can upgrade with the option of Final Cut Studio 1 to FCS2 instead of the option for Final Cut Pro 4 to FCS2. When you instal FCS2 you would need full version Final Cut Pro 4 serial number and FCS1 serial then FCS2 upgrade serial. This is a hypothetical situation and can be assumed for future versions although unconfirmed for reasons previously stated; namely that there is no Final cut Studio 3 available so no one can say for sure.

Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade ruined my HD video files!

Okay, now I'm really puzzled. I installed Final Cut Studio 2 to upgrade my PowerMac G5. Now, all the HD footage I recorded, both in iMovie HD and in FCP 5 from my Sony HDR-FX1 camera has annoying green and red streaks that flash repeatedly. Even iMovie HD has the same problem when playing back old HD projects. The streaks also appear if I try playing the files back through Quicktime Player.
How do I know that the upgrade was the issue? As luck would have it, I still had my copy of FCP 5 installed. I opened one of the old HD projects in version 5 format in FCP 5, and the video plays back perfectly. Load the same project into FCP 6, and streaks.
Exactly how is this an "upgrade"? How do I fix?

Earlier versions of the applications in Final Cut Studio might not open or may behave unexpectedly if you use them on your computer after upgrading to Final Cut Studio 2.
When you upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2, there are a number of application-support resources that also get upgraded. Earlier versions of the applications in Final Cut Studio are not compatible with these newer support resources, and should not be used on a computer that has been upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.

Don't move or rename Final Cut Studio applications after they're installed. If you have moved or renamed applications, they may still be present on your hard drive after you upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. You can delete the vestigial applications them by dragging them to the Trash.

Final cut studio 3 upgrade question

I have Final Cut Studio 2 and I am thinking about buying the upgrade to 3. And I am selling my final cut studio 2 to my little brother when he goes to college. My friend said that if I buy the upgrade version of FCS 3, that if something happens, I need to reinstall FCS 2 first then install the upgrade, that I can't clean install from the upgrade discs. Is that true? I haven't bought and upgrade version before. And I don't want to buy this and find out that I can't clean install from it.

To clarify...
If you have a full version of FCS2, and you purchase an upgrade to FCS3, you need the serial number from FCS2 to perform the upgrade. If your system crashes, or you need to do a fresh install, your FCS3 will be of no use without the serial number from FCS2. Selling it to your brother technically would mean you're running the same program on two separate systems. To do this the right way, purchase an older version of FCP and get a fresh serial for your install...

Final Cut Studio 4 upgrade

I currently have a copy of Final Cut Studio installed and have purchased the FCS4 upgrade. If I install this will it have adverse affects on my projects I have been working on recently? or will they be import smoothly into the new version?

The standard reply (which Ian gave you) is don't upgrade during a project.
When you do upgrade, make a clone of your existing system drive (either on an external firewire or second internal drive) before you start the upgrade process. That way, if the upgrade process has problems, you can overwrite the failed installation system drive with your clone and be back in business in an hour or so.
Also, work on a copy of any projects with the new software until you are sure the upgrade was successful. Once you open a project with a new FCP version and save it, it is not backwardly compatible.
