Final Cut Studio results

So the word is out that the new mac mini will run Final Cut Studio, I think a lot of people here are wondering how well it runs.
Can people who have this set up please post your observations on how well or poorly it runs, how it compares to other systems you've ran it on, and how much RAM etc your mac mini is configured for.
Thanks!

I posted this on another thread, but any way...here's my limited FCP report:
I was able to do some FCP testing tonight. Don't have a ton of video on the mini yet, but I was able to access 3 different sets of video:
1. SD from Compact flash cards original capture. Worked just like my MacPro and maybe noticed the compact flash drive faster. No problems with filters and transitions
2. H.264 1920x1080. Had major problems playing from the timeline. Would drop frames and stop after a cut or transition. Just playing the clip was fine. It was when I used a filter or transition that it coughed and sputtered. My MacPro does a lot of dropped frames, etc too so not sure if this is conclusive proof, but I'd say it would be a stretch to edit this regularly on the mini.
3. HDV 1440x1080. I grabbed some HDV video from the FW800 drive attached and it worked quickly and easily. No problems here with transitions and filters. Behaved a lot like the SD stuff, but had some longer render times I think.
Bottom line from this brief test is that 2 out of 3 would totally work for me. I would try to find an easier way to do the H.264 stuff...maybe look for a different codec, not sure exactly right now.
Sorry for the limited scenarios, but it's late and I'm heading to bed. If I have more I'll report back.
Since that is with the 2.0Ghz Mac Mini I would think a 2.26Ghz should have less dropped frames.

    eBay heavily "overprotects" copyright owners.
The BSA is hired by Apple to look out for copyright violations. They simply go after everything without any investigation. eBay plays along and so you are the one with the problem to do something completely lega.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Macbook (not Pro)

Curious to know if anyone has any experience running Final Cut Studio 2 on a non-pro Macbook. Can Macbook handle Final Cut Pro alright? Is video memory an issue?
    Thanks,
    Mbs

For the record, Motion will run on a MacBook. It's just that some of the features aren't supported, and will produce incorrect results. So I wouldn't rely on it.
Final Cut, however, works perfectly. No problems at all.

  • Final Cut Studio Vs Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.

What are the best reasons for purchasing Final Cut Studio over Adobe Premiere Pro CS5?
    Thanks!

Hi friends i'ven reading your coments and my conclusions are CS5 is faster and has the same features and quality than FCP, i like to ask to Studio X if you know more FCP and you are a pro why? with facts because if i have to buy or say to a friend or client go and use one or another with real facts.
Example FCP has better color calibration, better final quality, more features or so.
Another curious thing is that jhon 1 in 2 said is better AVCHD compatibility or handle these are to consistent points that i can undertand as a normal person.
I can understand a  point if you can say me why FCP is better with examples because i know much of hardware but a little of this software, i can give a big point to a software tha can use mi machine at full capacity because if i spend 10K$ in a computer i'd like a blazing fast one, if not is better to spend only 2.5K$ and wait the same amount of time for the same results.
Sorry for my english i'm not from USA so my vocabulary is short.

  • Final Cut Studio install problems

Well I was thrilled to get Final Cut Studio 2, but cannot get the thing installed. Looking to do a 100% uninstall so I can start fresh
    I have the following disks:
    1. Final Cut Studio
    2. DVD Studio
    3. Livetype1
    4. Livetype2
    5. Motion
On my first install everything went as planned and it asked me for serial number. I made it thru the first disk with no problems, and the 2nd one installed for awhile, but suddenly stopped. A message popped up saying to put the Final Cut Studio disk back in. When I did that it failed. So I followed these steps:
    Delete the User Preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Final Cut Pro back to its original settings. This will not impact your project files, but you should verify your Scratch Disk location setting after doing this. To reset your Final Cut Pro user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences—the tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
Remove the "com.apple.finalcutpro.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Remove the "Final Cut Pro User Data" folder from the Preferences folder.
Remove receipts and reinstall Final Cut Pro
Another approach you might consider is reinstalling Final Cut Pro. To do this effectively, you need to remove the application and its receipts, then install Final Cut Pro and use Software Update to install additional updates. You don't have to remove everything that was installed with Final Cut Pro. Follow the steps below to completely reinstall a fresh copy of Final Cut Pro. Note: Make sure that you have your installation discs and serial number handy before starting this.
    Open the Applications folder.
Drag the Final Cut Pro application to the Trash.
    Go to /Library/Receipts.
In the Receipts folder, select the "FinalCutPro.pkg" file.
Choose View > as List to view the contents in a list.
Click the Date Modified column header so you can easily see all of the receipts that were installed at the same time as Final Cut Pro.
Drag the FinalCutPro.pkg receipt to the Trash, as well as any other items that have the same modification date within 3 minutes of the FinalCutPro.pkg's modification date.
Click the Name column header to sort the list alphabetically.
Drag any other receipts whose names begin with "Final Cut Pro" to the Trash.
Insert your Final Cut Pro installation disc and install Final Cut Pro.
When finished, use Software Update (under the Apple menu) to update your software to the latest version.
I started a fresh install, but noticed it never asked me again for my serial number. I was skeptical, but the installation went on and I made it all the way to the last disk, but when I put the Motion disk in the computer seemed to struggle to read the disk and eventually asked for the FCP disk to be put back in which resulted in another error.
I have tried several times since then to get this thing installed but keep failing. I worry about how it never asks me for a serial number. Are there some files that I am not deleting?
I have also tried to install one disk at a time and installing without Content.
    Using a brand new Imac

Not sure if this is related but I've upgraded from FCS 1 to FCS 2 and all went well. I've now started to install all the various application media and Motion fails around 75% through the installation. I've tried to do a disk image of the disk but again that fails approx. 75% of the way through with the error "I/O error"
Tried the Soundtrack Pro media this morning and got through the first disk and again about 75% through disk 2 the installation failed.
Maybe Apple has bought a job lot of 'cheap' DVD's to save some money? I'll pop into an Apple store and see what they have to say!

  • Time Capsule and Final Cut Studio

Is there a way to have Time machine and Time Capsule halt operations while Final Cut Studio components are in use? I've had a couple of annoying hangs.

Unfortunately, you are seeing the results of pushing too much data simultaneously on your network.
Two options come to mind: 1) Utilize Gigabit Ethernet connections between network clients where possible, and 2) Utilize 802.11n 5 GHz only connections where Ethernet is not an option.
Besides those, temporarily disable Time Machine backups when processing files with FCP.

  • Mac Pro and Final Cut Studio 5.1.2

I've had problems trying to export mpeg files from final cut pro using compressor after having updated all applications to their current versions (FCP 5.1.2, Compressor 2.3, Qmaster 2.3, QT 7.1.3...) including firmware, OS and security updates. Since I was kind of in the middle of a project I ended up reverting back to the original universal crossgrade of Final Cut Studio (FCP 5.1, Compressor 2.1, Qmaster 2.1...) in order to get the desired results of a muxed mpeg. Now, before I go back to trying to resolve this issue of updating the software, I would like to know if anyone is running Final Cut Studio on a Mac Pro with all updates current (5.1.2, 2.3...) and with the ability to export muxed mpeg streams - both audio and video in the same file. Also, I have posted more specific questions regarding these issues in the compressor and FCP forums but decided I needed to hear from some Mac Pro users who have had success with the Final Cut Studio updates. BTW, I have done all the updates of Final Cut Studio (5.1.2, 2.3...) on a G5 quad at work and have had no problems whatsoever. I'd just like to have everything up to date and functional. Other than trying to get this worked out, I have found my Mac Pro to be most excellent. Thanks in advance.

Dave, thanks for your input. It would crash out during the compressor export and the failure reason would say 3x Crash Server Down in the compressor box. I haven't tried an mpeg-1 because all we broadcast are mpeg-2 program streams. Most of the stuff I export is no longer than 10 - 12 minute segments. If you could, try exporting as an mpeg-2 muxed. Some other possible factors - I had captured the original footage on a G5 quad at work, put them on an external drive and then loaded them onto the Mac Pro and imported them into the project. Could there be a difference between DV codecs of the PPC and the Intel processors? Now that I'm at a stopping point I'm planning on trying to do the update again. Just hoping to catch something I might have missed. If I were a total computer illiterate I would say user error, but I'm not.

  • How well does Final Cut Studio run with 3gb of ram? Macbook Pro 2.33mhz

I have a 2.33mhz (Model a1211) Macbook Pro. I've maxed out the ram to 4gb but because of the motherboard restrictions (that I still don't quite understand) it can only use 3GB.
I've read on the FCS specs that the minimum is requirement is 1GB but Apple recommends 4GB.
I cut mainly short 3 to 5 minute pieces with AVCHD video decoded with up to 60-90 minutes of footage.
Will I have any serious issues with any of the Final Cut Studio Programs that I should be aware of?
I'm obviously not expecting Mac Pro results but If it doesn't run very well with 3GB, I might have to rethink my purchase. If it is just a "hiccup" now and then with waiting for video to start or such, I will deal.
    Thanks

Motion is gfx intensive. Meaning that the lower the gfx card, the lower the performance. You should expect little-to-no realtime performance from Motion on the system mentioned with even basic-to-remotely-intermediate animations. CPU RAM will make a difference in the amount of total frames that you can render in a RAM preview, but it will not affect realtime performance. With your proposed system: add a particle, a lower third text, a replicator with 5,000 points, a light with some shadows, and a reflection (and this is one of each mind you, not multiple instances) and expect around a * less than * 1-3 fps playback in draft quality with %50-%25 playback resolution. Then expect to wait up to a minute or more with the beachball of death for each parameter change. No joke either. Good luck fine-tuning your moderate-to-even-remotely-complex animation with your desired system.
If working in Motion is your desire, then focus on the graphics card. Unfortunately you can not upgrade your gfx card on the MBP, so you should consider selling your MBP and investing in a Mac Pro. You can upgrade the gfx card in the Mac Pro and obtain optimal performance from Motion. Otherwise you'll literally be stuck in the mud with your animations.

My final cut studio keeps giving me this error out of memory message when ever i try to render a piece of footage and its closing unexpected. Does anybody know the reason?

I had this problem about 2 months ago and, as others have suggested in this thread, eventually traed it backed to some stills I had scanned and brought into the project.  Accidentally I had changed the scanner settings, with the result that a couple of skills were well beyond 1980 x 1020 pixels.  I resampled the stills and everything was fine again.  Hope this might help.

  • Final Cut Studio 3 installation problem

Working on my Mac Pro 1,1 and I'm habing rouble re-installing Final Cut Studio 3 on it.
Here's the background:  I've hesiated updating the OS beyond 10.5 so that I could keep using a legacy copy of ProTools LE.  Recently, I decided to add a new hard drive to one of the open bays so that I could have a 10.7.5 startup disc for most applications, and I could simply rebppt in 10.5 when I need to.  everything went smootly until I tried to re-install FCS-3.
The installation keeps hanging up whenever I try to install any components that need content (i.e. DVD Studio Pro, Sound Track, etc...).  As a test, I did an install of just FCP (and default Compressor) and that seemed to be OK.  Once installed, I thought I'd try to add one compnent at a time - so I started with DVD Studio Pro.
Just as had happed when I tried to do a full install, it failed.  I got an error message that
"the installer encountered a problem and that I needed to contact the software manufacturer"
So far, I've tried with both DVD Studio Pro and Sound Track with the same result.  It seems to go through the entire process of copying over files on the content disc before it fails.  On the DVD-SP as soon as it ejects the one (and only) content disc, I get the error.  On SoundTrack, it seems to take all the data from disc 1 (of 3) then it askes for disc 2.  As soon as i put it in and it tries to read it, the the install fails and I get the same error as I listed above.
Anybody have am idea of what might be happening?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Have a look in disc utility and see how your drive is formatted.
It should be Mac OS extended.

  • Final Cut Express 4 or Final Cut Studio??

I am currently having to burn DVDs for a new company named Astramedia.
We are getting our Videos from suppliers in the HDV format as a .mov file. (More details at the end) These files were exported using Apples Final Cut Studio. Now we want to use these Video files for DVD burning. The DVDs should be in high quality, in 16:9, and with Intro and Menu. My question is do I need to by Apple Final Cut Studio for the Compressor and the DVD Studio Pro programm or is it sufficient enough to use Final Cut Express 4 to export the HDV files and use iDVD to burn the DVDs?

FCE cannot use native HDV files.
You would have to convert them first to one of the FCE friendly codecs then edit and pipe into iDVD.
You will get a pretty good result.
Compressor and DVDSPro will raise the bar of course but a lot more knowledge is involved in proper use of these programs.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 / OS Lion

I just bought a new iMac anticipating that I would be able to use my employer's copy of Final Cut Studio 2.
This evidently is not the case at all.
The end result I am seeking is really to have a decent editing program along with compressor or something comparable with which to export.  Motion would be great, but I wouldn't be torn up, as long as I had something better than iMovie with which to edit.
My question is in my situation what would be the most cost effective plan (without purchasing Final Cut Studio X or spending more than the cost of the new 21.5'' iMac I purchased)?
    - Return the computer and look for a used Mac with Snow Leopard?
    - Would a FCS 3 upgrade even work, if I could find one?
    - I don't necessarily understand the specifics of the PowerPC dilemma, and is this a hardware problem with new iMacs?  That is, if I used a different operating system, such as linux on the new iMac would I be able to load FCS 2?
I have looked around a few times through Message Boards, but haven't seemed to find anything on a user who has purchased a new iMac with the factory preset as OS Lion.
Any suggestions or leads would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

Cool Nick. I came across your post later. I'm not really a big tech guy so I was hoping there was an easy fix but at least you're providing an option.
I'm shocked that Apple would do this (not allow FC6 to work on Lion). For a company that prides itself on being very consumer friendly and making life simple....this *****. I spent $1,800 + CDN thinking ya, let's go the legit route and actually buy software that will last me a few years but now I have this cool looking Apple box which I may end up using as a foot stool!
Hope you tech guys can figure something out or even better....maybe someone at Apple will fix this!

  • Anamorphic Setup - Final Cut Studio Training

I inadvertedly posted this in the DVD SP forum. I'd like to move it here where it belongs.
I just got my Final Cut Pro Studio a couple weeks ago, had to finish a project that I was doing in FCE and iDVD, and am now reviewing the tutorial on the Final Cut Studio Training DVD.
One of the first steps is to setup the session to "DV-NTSC Anamorphic". Since I had already blown past that 2 week ago, I did not see it this time, nor could I find the correct menu to make that setting for the tutorial. So I just blew by it; realizing that I'd find out sooner or later what the cost would be.
I found out: When doing the Motion segment and importing the final "TrailerLowerThirds" back into FCP, that part is compressed horizontally with black side bars on the right and left.
    3 questions:
How do I make that setting if I've been running FCP already?
What does that do to the project, the clips, anything else?
If I were to make this mistake on one of my projects, how would I recover?
So far I've only been making projects in DV-NTSC 2:3 (I guess that's the right way to say it). Any insights would be appreciated.
    G5 dual core 2Ghz, 2.5 GB, 160, 300GB & 300GBfw   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   FCE HD, FCSP5.1

My second question was: "What does that do to the project, the clips, anything else?"
The essential thing to bear in mind is that 4:3 and 16:9 anamorphic projects (in the SD world) have the SAME resolution: 720x480 pixels for NTSC, 720x576 for PAL. Because the resolution is the same, but the apparent frame size is different, it can lead to confustion, and it's easy to get it wrong - especially over there in the US where anamorphic broadcasting of SD material never took off, and thus widescreen sets were never mass market before HD.
(The situation here in Europe is different.).
Have a read of this for clarity: http://www.helerab.fi/widescreen/
The anamoprhic easy setup just tells FCP that you are capturing anamorphic material, and that new sequences should be anamorphic by default. You can override these defaults if necessary, but the easy setup just makes it harder to mess up.
The important thing when going to DVD is to keep the workflow anamorphic all the way through: output anamorphic material from FCP, make sure material is transcoded to mpeg (whether through compressor, iDVD or Quicktime) with anamorphic settings intact; and in your DVD authoring application, make sure projects, menus and tracks are created or flagged as 16:9.
The end result is an anamorphic DVD.
Your DVD player has a menu where you tell it what type of TV it's connected to - whether 4:3 or widescreen (and if it's a 4:3 set, how it should handle widescreen material: either letterboxing it or "cropping" it via pan/scan).
I've started noticing in other posts that some people think that if you have anamorphic material you should set your DVD player to 16:9. This is NOT A GOOD IDEA (unless the DVD player is attached to a widescreen TV, in which case you have it set to 16:9 already!) Just set the DVD player once and leave it alone.
Hope these observations help get you started. If you understand what's going on with anamorphic media, you're less likely to make mistakes. Best of luck.
