Final Cut Studio Upgrade?

Hello!
I just recently purchased Final Cut Studio 3 lisence from a local retail store (varimport) and had my 3% discount in price as I'm a student. I'm also very keen to upgrade to the future version of Final Cut Studio and I'd like to know can I upgrade my version with the upgrade version (299$) or do I have to purchase a completely new license? I've had different answers to this question and now I'd like to ask it here on Apple's official forum . I mean the situation is pretty bad if I have to spend another 'round 1000€ for a new license this year.... or whenever the next major version will come out. In the end that 3% discount really doesn't mean anything when the price is that high.
Thanks in advance,
Miika

Current academic versions of Final Cut (which you got) will not upgrade to newer versions of Final Cut. They will update via Software Updater for patches, but not to a full new version. You'll have to buy a full version.
As for price, in the past, sometimes the academic versions were about the same price as the upgrades. This latest version, the academic prices went up significantly.
What will happen in the next version? Who knows. But there's the current situation and the history. Roll the bones.

  • Problem Installing Final Cut Studio Upgrade

I recently purchased the Final Cut Studio Upgrade. When I went to input my SN for FCP 6 to install the upgrade, it rejects it as invalid. Have FCP 6 on my computer operating just fine. what gives?

Check to make sure your current FCP install (FCP 6) isn't an academic or Not-For-Resale version; neither is eligible for upgrade.
If you have a legitimate retail version of FCP 6, make sure you are entering the exact serial number as found on the two stickers affixed to the front of the booklet titled "Installing Your Software" that came packaged with FCP 6.
    Be careful to enter a 0 (zero) instead of an uppercase O and a 1 (one) instead of a lowercase l (L) or vice versa. The serial number should be 1 letter - 3 numbers - 3 letters - 3 numbers - 3 letters - 3 numbers - 3 letters - 3 numbers - 3 letters - 3 letters - 1 letter with 3 numbers

  • Is there a difference between final cut studio and final cut studio upgrade

i wish to buy final cut studio and was going to buy from the apple store but they recently stopped selling i have found on amazon two final cut studios one call final cut studio and the other called final cut studio upgrade the upgrade one is cheaper so this makes me think is this just like an expansion and do i need the original but both have the same pictures, descriptions and specs so are they the same thing just with different names or what? please help

Final Cut Studio is the full install...where the UPGRADE means that it requires you to have a previous version.  It is cheaper because it only works if you have a previous version.

  • Reselling Final Cut Studio Upgrades?

Several years ago I upgraded a full version of Final Cut Pro 2 to Final Cut Studio 2 to Final Cut Studio 3. Both FCS 2 and 3 are all full-retail upgrades, not academic upgrades. Quite frankly, my company is not doing much high-end video production so I'm thinking about selling my Final Cut Studio upgrades so I can purchase a new Mac, but I have a few questions.
Since I upgraded from Final Cut Pro 2 to Final Cut Studio 2 to Final Cut Studio 3 do I have to sell everything as a bundle or can I sell each upgrade individually?
Does it matter if I registered the software with Apple?
If so, how can I find out if the software is registered?
    Thanks!

  • Am I eligible for $299 Final Cut Studio Upgrade?

I own the following versions of Final Cut Pro. Some of them are very old.
    Final Cut Pro 1.2 (Academic)
    Final Cut Pro 3.0 (Academic)
Final Cut Pro 4 (Non-Academic, Upgrade version)
Will my ownership of any of these versions qualify me for the new $299 Final Cut Studio upgrade? And how does the upgrade work, does one just input their serial number from a previous version (I ask because none of my owned versions are currently installed)?
Thanks for the help. Much appreciated!

Not quite sure how your FCP4 upgrade works as the previous academic versions were not upgradable.
The Final Cut Studio 3 upgrade version requires a non academic, full retail (non-upgrade) FCP serial number as the basis for upgrading.
However, when in doubt about this, best to have a conversation with Apple directly as they are the ultimate authority on whether this will work or not.

  • Help Me about Final Cut Studio Upgrade.

I'm a student studied Editing in KOREA.
I had used Final Cut Studio 5.1 now.
and I wanted to upgrade FCP Studio 7. so I bought Final Cut Studio Upgrade 7 last week.
And then I tried to installed, and I sucessed upgrade once. but it was not perpectly.
    So I re-installed from beginning(FCPS 5.1) yesterday.
But now I can upgrade to FCPS 7 from FCPS 5.1.
Because It said "My serial number is not vaild." again and again.
(so I did format my mac book pro. and I installed from beginning, Mac OS X, iLife, iWork...FCPS 5.1. But I have same problem."
I can't understand this situation. and I don't know the solution.
I'm sorry to no support line about software in KOREA. T.T
    I need your help!!!!!!!

If your 5.1 version was an academic version, it is not eligible for upgrade.
But you say that the upgrade installed once, but not "perpectly" (whatever that means). Specifically, what went wrong with the first install?
By the way, you don't need to have the older version on your computer to install an upgrade; all you need is the serial number from a legal RETAIL copy. If you own a legal retail copy (not academic) and are still having installation problems, contact Apple.

  • Final Cut Studio Upgrade: Printed Manuals?

Does anyone know if there are printed manuals included for each of the applications in the upgrade version of Final Cut Studio 2? They couldn't tell me at my local Apple Store and didn't have a boxed upgrade version to examine.
Thanks for whatever info you can provide!

    Hi Gina,
If you buy FCPstudio2 (Full Package):
You get 4 printed manuals about FCP 6 and 1 about COLOR.
Manuals about Motion, Live Type, Compressor and so on are available from every software installed or upgraded when you go to HELP>USER MANUAL

  • Final Cut Studio Upgrade Kit

    Hi,
I bought the Production Suite last year or something, and now I would like to upgrade to Final Cut Studio for $199. Does anyone now, if apple ships the whole Studio box, or simply the install discs? Just curious.
    Patrick

I just received my upgrade kit. It came with just the Install DVDS, a software license, and a small "Installing Your Software" booklet with new License codes.
No manuals. They're all in PDFs on the DVDs.
I was disappointed about no printed manuals but then again, from an environmental standpoint, they conserved resources. It's all in how you look at it. Manuals are nice but searching PDFs is quicker.
My biggest surprise & confusion is the Graphics Card compatibility issue. It said my Dual G5 with a Radeon 9600 Pro GPU was not capable of running FCP 5!
I looked in my system profile and Quartz Extreme is OFF. I tried turning it on with some hackery, but it still says "Unsupported" under the "Quartz Extreme" column in System Profiler.
According to Apple's readme, my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro is not capable of FCP 5, even though I'd swear I read it CAN do Quartz Extreme.
I am finding this a bit confusing... Do I really need to upgrade my video card or is it a matter of turning on Quartz Extreme properly?
Those who are upgrading should consider this issue...
Note, I can run the other apps, including Motion, but not FCP. I would have thought it would have installed and simply not run as fast or something, but NO, it just won't install at all.
    Any ideas?

  • Final Cut Studio upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 problem

I am trying to upgrade my G5 from Final Cut Studio to Final Cut Studio 2, I have the key for the upgrade, but it is asking for the serial key of the original Final Cut. I have it, but it still won't accept, says it is an invalid serial number. I bought my "turn-key" system from B&H photovideo and had no problems with the system or programs until this. I cannot understand what is going on. I have a previously used Final Cut Studio 2 software. All materials are here, and the key seems good, I just can't get the installer to recognize my original copy. Any suggestions?

  • Final Cut Studio Upgrade/Crossgrade Nightmare

Hopefully someone here can help me, because I'm facing a huge problem thanks to Apple's horrific upgrade/crossgrade nightmare with Final Cut Studio.
After some forum surfing here, I've discovered that upgrade/crossgrades were offered some months ago, but not anymore. I think this is outrageous on the part of Apple.
    Here's my situation:
September 2006 (Australia): Bought a spiffy G5 / 23" Cinema HD machine with Final Cut Studio (5.0). Spent over $8,000. Used and loved and used and loved.
April 2007 (New Zealand): Bought a spiffy MacPro / 23" HD. Spent another $8,000. Can't used the software because the new machine is intel/Rosetta. Can't "crossgrade" because the offer's gone. Have to upgrade to FCS2. Cool. I will. But it's not here in NZ for a few more weeks, and I need FCP NOW!
    What do I do?
How do I install and run my Final Cut Studio 5.0 on the new intel Mac? Where do I go to get the "crossgrade" (what a load of crap, by the way... to make customers who spent thousands on software have to pay to use it on the new machines) now that the links are all redirecting to FCS2??
Any advice (URGENTLY) would be most appreciated. I've been on hold with Apple for 20 minutes already. Cheers.
    MacPro 2.66Ghz QX   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Really? The upgrade was no secret? Maybe for people who sit online and read everything there is to know about this stuff... but I've been busy using FCP 5.0 for a year and a half on a PPC machine. How am I supposed to know that when I buy a new MacPro everything is going to come crashing to a halt? I've had better upgrade experiences with Windoze machines (and those have been pretty horrific--the appropriate and suitable word here--too)!
And why exactly should I have to pay $700 USD for the privilege of using MY software on a newer machine? I have no problem paying the upgrade price for Final Cut Studio 2... it's a new product, better features, etc. But to pay it to use software I bought a year and a half ago on a new machine? The "crossgrade" should be FREE. Yes, I know that's a bad word in the Apple world, but if you're going to do a shift in technology, it's completely disrespectful to your customers to present them with a situation of being unable to use what they've paid dearly for. Honestly. It's one of the "benefits" Apple uses to SELL their computers -- whatever happened to It just works, and You can use all your old stuff?
Mate, you don't have to sympathize with my position. But after spending $18,000, I think a reasonable solution to this problem is fair and warranted.
If anyone else has any suggestions, I would very much appreciate them.

  • Which system for Final Cut Studio upgrade...iMac or MacBook Pro?

I am currently using FCE on a Powerbook G4 and am considering upgrading to Final Cut Studio. Which system would give me better performance: New iMac 24" (2.8 Penryn processor) or MacBook Pro (2.5 Penryn processor)? Does the NVIDIA graphics card for the iMac upgrade significantly improve editing performance.. or is the AGI 2600 Pro card sufficient? Anything else worth considering when comparing these systems?
    Any input is appreciated... thanks.

FW 400 is enough to deal with DV footage,
Not all HD formats require eSATA drives, DVCPRO HD for example can be handled by FW 400 or FW 800 drives and HDV streams pretty much the same DV does.
Things change if at some point you need to deal with Uncompressed SD or HD, ProRes etc.
    eSATA then would become mandatory.
If you'd like to set up a desktop then MacPro is what I suggest.
If you don't make a living from editing then I guess an iMac will do for a while.
A MacPro allows you to host/replace multiple internal drives, host/replace capture cards or GPUs if you need for business purposes.
Increase RAM up to 32GB etc
iMac does not offer such options.
    Your call,
    G.

  • Final Cut Studio upgrades...

Im getting a 24-inch iMac with extra stuff in it and Final Cut Studio 2. Im a student in college and noticed that people who have the first FCS academic version arent able to get FCS 2 at the upgrade price. Here is my question, If I get the academic version of FCS 2, will I beable to use the serial # to get the upgrade discount for the FCS 3 when it comes out? Or do I have to have the regular $1299 version?
Also, is this a good configuration in the 24 inch for getting Final Cut Studio 2?
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    500GB Serial ATA Drive
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256MB SDRAM
These features are the extras I can get...

If you get the academic version of FCS 2 then the price is about the same as for upgrade of FCS 3 when it comes out. The reason it is not eligible for upgrade is because of the already lower price of $699. So the answer is no. so you could always buy the academic version now instead and when the next version comes out you will pay the same price again $699.

  • Final Cut Studio Upgrade from 10.4.11?

I just want to be absolutely sure that I qualify for the upgrade. I purchased Final Cut Studio 5 on my old power pc (not intel) using 10.4.11. I believe the discs are universal but my question is this. I'd like to buy a new power mac and just the FCS upgrade. Will I qualify even though my FCP version is from the power pc/10.4.6 days? In other words, can I install from scratch on a new power mac just the upgrade disks or do I need the original FCS 5 disks for complete installation?

There is no Final Cut Studio 5. The current version is Final Cut Studio 2009, also known as Final Cut Studio 3.
If you're referring to Final Cut PRO 5, then it is not compatible with Intel processor Macs. The first version that was compatible was version 5.1 (aka the "Universal" version).

Good luck with that. PowerMacs, called so because they used Power PC (PPC) processors, have not been manufactured in some time now. Yes, as long as you own ANY retail version of Final Cut Pro (all the way back to version 1), you qualify for the $299.00 (USD) upgrade to the current version of Final Cut Studio.
In other words, can I install from scratch on a new power mac just the upgrade disks or do I need the original FCS 5 disks for complete installation?
All you'll need are the upgrade install discs and the serial number for the upgrade as well as the serial number for your previous version. The previous version does NOT need to be installed at all.

  • Serial Number issues when installing Final Cut Studio upgrade

I am trying to install iDVD from my Final Cut Studio V3.0 Upgrade on my new Mac Pro (Late 2013). I put the Serial Number that came with the upgrade in and then it requests the serial number from my original Final Cut Studio. It says the original serial number is invalid.
I am running Mavericks 10.9.4. There are no other computers on my network.  I've done the usual things, repair permission and a restart with no joy.
    What am I doing wrong.

  • Will Final cut studio upgrade work??

    Hi
My office in considering buying the Final cut 5 studio package. We have the full version of FCP 4.5 and all the stuff that comes with it. However we have the educational verion of DVD studio pro 3.
Just wondering if that will be a problem if we got the upgrade version of the studio package. If the EDU version doesn't work, can it be upgraded from any other version of DVDSP?
    thanks
    -Dave
    Cheif Editor..AMV

Do you have to own the full version of EVERYTHING to get the upgrade?
To get the $500 upgrade - yes. However, there is another upgrade - all you need is FCP. The latter is $700 and the only one that you would qualify for.
You can see what I mean here. On the right there's a heading labeled "Upgrade Requirements" - spells it out.
