Final Cut to Color

I'm having trouble with something. I sent my sequence into color, did all my color corrections, then sent it back into final cut. when i opened up the color sequence in final cut, i noticed that some of my clips were gone, and it messed up some of the effects i had on other clips. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help. I'll just re watch the entire sequence, mark down where it's messing up,re-do the enitire color correction and skip over those parts, and whatever it had trouble rendering before I'll just manually color correct it with FCP's  3 way color corrector or magic bullet suite.

I was wondering who has this function available in the QuickTime player preferences. If you go to QuickTime>Preferences do you see a checkbox for this as the last item in the General prefs panel?
What I'm trying to find out is if this is available to FCE4 users, or whether it requires you to have the QuickTime pro player or FCS. If you have both the current versions of both FCE and FCS you should certainly have it, but I'm curious if you have only FCE4 if it's available.
    Thanks very much.

  • Tips&Tricks How to use Final Cut and Color !

    Hello ,
Final Cut - Color - Back to Final Cut
After many days of trying to get this combination working I have found a non-Color-Final Cut way :
1)After you final cut picture edit is locked you have to clean as much as possible the timeline . That means you will have to stick all your image clips to a sigle video timeline and remove all attributes from each clip . Delete all empty video tracks and audio tracks .
Make sure you don't have any gaps in the timeline .
All clips should have the same compression type and frame rates .
2)Send it to Color , grade all the scenes and render it out .
3)Go in finder to the render folder and create an automator work flow adding as source the render folder from color.
Add the find finder option and set it up to look after .mov files .
Add a move finder option and move all the .mov files from Render Color Folder to a new empty folder .
Having done this you should have all the files from the render color folder moved to a new folder .
4)Go back in Final Cut drag&drop all the clips from that new folder on a new timeline , go ahead and check if the new timeline is identical with the old one .
Copy and paste all the attributes from the old sequence to the one from color and re-render in Final Cut . That's it you should be able now to put it back on a tape as a master movie.
In my case Color 1.02 and Final Cut 6.02 I couldn't get the material out from color using another way .
Please post your detailed work flow here and also post if you find this post useful and/or bugs you find about this workflow .
I hope Apple will fix this issue in their next update .

I use external drives as backup. But I don't trust them. And in case of fire or what ever...It is of no use...
But I agree on your comment about DropBox. It would have been the perfect solution though.
    What else is there?
I have a 2TB HD but these projects are huge and still growing - so I have to move my projects to several external drives. So maybe I should just work directly from external drives and skip the partition of the computers main drive? I am thinking of the disadvantage of reducing the total storage of the disk.

  • 2k cineon pipeline for Final Cut and Color

    Hi guys,
I'm looking for some info (and Google's getting me nowhere fast) on how to properly set up a pipeline between color and final cut pro. What I have is 2k cineon anamorphic frames, what I would like to do is work with those frames in Final cut in hd resolution, then send it to color for final grading on the original 2k images. Any information, links, etc. would greatly be appreciated.
    thanks,

I don't work in 2k so not sure if this applies, but generally speaking it sounds like you want to use Media Manager to create offline HD files, edit, then use Media Manager again to online the files to the 2k video. Then, as already suggested, send the online sequence to Color via the file menu.
You must have a wicked setup, usually we offline to DV or lower, never heard of someone offlining to HD but if you've got the juice, rock it!

  • Final Cut Pro color problem

So I just got myself a new 24' LED monitor for my home edit suite, and I have been very pleased with it.  I just happened to open FCP to see adjust my workspace for the bigger setup, and I noticed a strange problem.  In FCP, the viewer and the canvas look very dark, like the brightness is turned down.  It also looks that way on my laptop monitor, which has always been my second edit monitor.
However, my project exports look nothing like that on the same monitor.  I thought perhaps the monitor wasn't calibrated properly, but the Quicktimes look fine.  I've attached a screen shot of the problem.  The image on top is the Quicktime, and the image on the bottom is the FCP canvas.  What's happened to my FCP?  Is it some sort of color profile or does it have to do with the resolution?  Is it a FCP setting or a monitor setting?  I don't understand why it changed how it looked on my laptop monitor, since nothing changed with it.  Any insight would be fantastic!
    Thanks

I believe this is the difference between  broadcast gamma output via something like a AJA KONA card and a regular monitor gamma. Go into Final Cut Pro- System Settings and select the Playback control tab. Change the Gamma Correction from "Accurate" to "Approximate"
When you reset this you can then start to calibrate your monitor. Without that gamma setting changed you can crank all of your monitor settings to maximun brightness and you'll never ever see the pluge on your color bars.
    Good Luck,

  • What is the benefit of "Enable Final Cut Studio color compatibility" in QT?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
What is the benefit of "Enabling Final Cut Studio " in Quicktime player?
I'm used to calibrate my monitor to a less bright gamma, suitale for monitoring video content.
So does the +color compatibility option+ can give me more precision when I color correct my movies?
    Michel Boissonneault

It does the same thing. The only difference is that the pref is active only when the QT player is active. So the gamma is not effected in other parts of the system.

  • Enable Final Cut Color Compatibility Further Washes out HDV!

I'm having a hard time with this.
Outputting a reference Quicktime movie (for later use in compressor, non self contained, HDV 1080i60) creates slightly washed out looking footage. Clicking the "enable FCP color compatibility" checkbox further brightens the footage! What's going on?
My monitor is at 1.8 gamma, is that checkbox further brightening my footage by bringing it up from where it's at to 1.8? This is really driving me crazy.

  • Playback Lag when sending from Color to Final Cut Pro

    Hi,
Im currently editing a video in Final Cut Pro 7, everything is fine i have everything layed out perfectly in my sequence, and it plays back fine etc.
I then send it to Color, once i have finished in color, i choose to render every clip, then once that is done i try to send back to final cut, but it tells me some of the clips arent rendered, yet i try several times with choosing them all to render and rendering them.
so after a while i ignore the warning and send it back to final cut, however once back in final cut the clips play extremley laggy, almost asif its about 10% the speed, but the audio is fine?
PLEASEEEEE help, this has never happend before
    thanks
    phill

I mean IN FINAL CUT, not Color. In FINAL CUT, load the clip into the VIEWER, THAT is where you check the SCALE.

  • Why does my footage look different in final cut than in color?

when i render in color and send back to final cut, the color grades don't look the same back in final cut as they do when i view them in color. any ideas why?

Mostly because COLOR is setup to work in 709 space and preview the correct gamma setting of 2.2 for legitimate broadcast use.
Quicktime and Final Cut make an assumption that you're using a graphics monitor for preview and uses a gamma setting of 1.8. This is a fundamental error and incompatibility.
Apparently Snow Leopard is supposed to address this issue.

  • Send to - Final Cut Pro XML data not seeing my Color render

    Sup folks,
As always I did some lurking on these boards and consulted the manual about this issue.
    Nada.
I've rendered my shots. They were all queued. They were all rendered.
When I use the Send to -> Final Cut Pro command I get the "not all your clips were rendered" warning. I click yes to see what I will get.
FCP imports the XML data and I get nothing. All of the clips in my FCP timeline generated through the Send to -> Final Cut Pro command are all of my original media prior to my color workflow. Not my graded Color renders.
I did move my renders from a local drive to an external because of data capacity. After doing so I did update my Media, Render and Project paths to the new location of my media.
I thought that would fix my problem. It didnt.
So again: my issue is that even with my shots all rendered correctly (i checked them in QT) the XML being sent to FCP through the Send to -> Final Cut Pro command is not hooking up with my renders.
    Deadline tomorrow.
    As always,thanks for your time

I did move my renders from a local drive to an external because of data capacity. After doing so I did >update my Media, Render and Project paths to the new location of my media.
If I'm following the sequence correctly, you rendered your material to a local drive. Then you moved it, changed the paths (in COLOR), and then tried to "Send to... FCP". Is this correct? If so, doomed to failure. In your case, you may have even moved an empty folder.
There is an ironclad and non-negotiable series of events in rendering and initiating the roundtrip. Many users regard this as a "bug". One of the first things that a user should always do is set up all the target paths before even doing the first grade. But it is essential that the target render path be set up PRIOR to loading the Render Queue. COLOR creates the receiving folder at that time, and that is where the media will go no matter what you do after the RenderQueue is loaded. Change the path, change the format... change whatever you want... the deal has been done, and all will be ignored. However, once the media is rendered and you choose Send To... FCP, then the original XML that FCP sent will be modified by COLOR and passed back to Final Cut. COLOR does NOT,repeat, NOT generate EDLs, XMLs, or any of that stuff. It only modifies original lists. That you modified the Media, Render and Project paths (probably only in the User Preferences tab) is meaningless once the project has been rendered. The Render path for this individual project is determined in the Project Settings pane, along with the render dimensions and format. However, COLOR will observe a path change AFTER the render, and edits the XML re-export to try to find the media in the newly named directory. Of course, your media is actually elsewhere, and you get a blank sequence.
Lastly, make sure that you SAVE the project after renders, to retain the "rendered" clip status -- or COLOR won't remember any of this.

  • Final Cut suite programs and Aperture crashing on launch

    Hi there!
This is the first time i write on the official Apple support forums so i hope this is the right section. Here's the deal; yesterday morning i've updated my Mac(the automatic update popped out on its own) and it added the App Store, i rebooted the system when asked and though everything went fine.
After that all my Final Cut applications couldn't load. The very first problem i had since the update was with Aperture. I've downloaded the trial and it started to crash while loading.
I've then tried to open Final Cut, Motion, Color, Compressor and every other program of that suite and it crashed too while opening, seeming to load forever.
I've never had problems with that programs(i've used FCP and Motion the day before), i've got enough space on my hdd(18gb or more) and i've also tried to reset all the preferences with the *Preference Manager*.
I need that programs for school and now none of them works..what should i do? I don't have Time Machine setted up to restore the system and i don't want to reinstall the system.
    What should i do then?

    It works! Thanks a lot
As you said Spotlight won't work anymore now but i can do my homework and continue my personal project now, hope to hear from Apple an official solution or at least someone to tell us what the problem is.
If you find the source of this trouble please tell us, hope there's a fix somewhere but for the moment this is great!
Another thing, do you also experience the crashes when downloading free apps from the App Store or that's another story?

  • Different gamma between Final Cut & Quicktime with ProRes

I am experiencing a gamma shift in my exported ProRes clips from Final Cut when viewing in Quicktime (typically, Quicktime's gamma results in a more washed-out file, and this seems to be specific to my ProRes exports). Is anyone else having this problem? And does anyone know a resolution?

Let me answer my own question - further google-ing provided the answer:

  • Why are the gamma settings different when I watch Final Cut projects on Quicktime?

I added a Gamma Correction filter to my video clips in Final Cut Express 4, and after exporting the project into a Quicktime file, the video shows up brighter and washed out in my Quicktime 7 player. I've even checked the box in Quicktime Preferences to enable Final Cut Studio color, and the video still looks brighter than it should be. What can I do to fix this?
Here is a side-by-side view of the Canvas on left and Quicktime on right.
I am sending this to someone as they will upload it, so to prevent any possible mishaps, my other question is are the settings from what we see from Final Cut the official one? Or is what I'm seeing on Quicktime what I will be seeing if I were to watch it streaming from a website?

It's a huge issue that has existed for years. Legacy QT used to have the Gamma set to 1.8 but since to 2.2. FCP however has no way (other than adding another effect) to adjust this. It does only affect some codecs however. Adobe After Effects has a check box in the project settings for 'Legacy Gamma in Quicktime'.
ProRes422 has a button for Automatic Gamma. One day they might add it to all the codecs - who knows.
In the meantime you could just add a gamma curves effect and adjust it to be 0.3 darker.

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1 upgrade with FCS2 disks

I have Final Cut 5.1 installed, but I uninstalled the rest of the Final Cut studio applications, I purchased the FCS2 upgrade and am wanting to know if the disks will upgrade Final Cut without me having the rest of the applications installed, or will I need to reinstall the full studio package to take advantage of the new Final Cut and Color.

The answer to your question is, without regard to opinions on what's a good or bad idea, the entire suite is on the disks. You can load them on a clean unused hard drive or over your present drive which contains some or all of the earlier programs.
A search of these forums will probably result in much advice saying do a clean install... that is totally erase your hard drive, reinstall OSX 10.4.10 and then install FCS2. Not everyone believes that is an absolute necessity and the choice is yours.
You will find that FCS2 (Final Cut6) will not interface well with earlier versions of Compressor, Motion, etc.. If in fact, it will work with them at all. It is best to install all of FCS2, upgrading every element of the suite, then deleting any of the various programs you do not wish to use. But don't be too quick on the trigger... try them, you'll like many of them and wonder how you got along without them in the past.
