Final cut to Motion Freezes

I'm trying to send a clip to Motion, but every time I try to send something, I get the color wheel, and Final Cut freezes. The clip is only 6 seconds long, and Final cut used to send things without a problem. Anybody have any advice?

Would be helpful to know what format your clip is (remember that formats like H.264, Mpeg4 etc are delivery not editing formats) and if you have tried things like [trashing preferences|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] or creating a new project and import the clip in the newly created project.
If you need to keep going as an alternative you may export your 6 seconds as QT movie (not conversion) self-contained, which will not affect quality and import that in Motion.

  • Half Frames in Final Cut and Motion

    Hi,
This has probably been asked before, and if not I'm surprised, but here goes -
I'm editing a music video with images, and I need the images to change on the beat of the song.... but we have worked out that they need to change every 24.5 frames. But neither Final Cut nor Motion will allow the image lengths to be cut to half a frame. It's either cut at 24 or 25 but not in-between. Obviously this messes up the whole flow of the video. It mustn't be a rare problem, especially in the music video world where there is a lot of cutting to a beat. Is there anyway to achieve this? The time line is split into frames but the playhead (and any attempts at stretching the clip) always snap to the frame (even with snap turned off).
Is this an inherent problem? Is there no solution?
If anyone has an answer I will be over joyed to find out!!
    Thanks!

Well, it's rare that an editor refuses to cope with the limitations of his medium of choice. You can do frame-by-frame examinations of dozens of "music videos" and you will see they all cut on the temporal borders of frames or they create an alternative transition.
If you cut one image at 24, the next one at 25, and repeat the cycle, it is physically impossible for the human eye/brain--ear/brain encoding and decoding system to perceive there is a difference (Although, forced to view a long sequence of these cycles, a viewer might sense a rhythm. It remains unlikely it will be identified as a one-frame difference in the cutting rhythm.) Ask any psychologist. The same principles of visual perception and persistence of vision long ago established 12 frames per second as the minimum image-change rate required to convey the illusion of animation, even in a 30fps timebase. That's why interlacing works.
You can help hide the change by accepting and then imposing a two-frame transition of some kind.

  • How to Uninstall older version of Final Cut and Motion

    Hello
I have a older academic version of Final Cut and Motion. I ordered a Full blown version of Final Cut Studio 2 that should arrive this week. How do I uninstall my old version of software? I don't want them conflicting with the new version.
My other question deals with performance. I'm running a Dual 2.5GHz G5 with 6G of ram. Video Board is the ATI x800XT. Will this system work for editing HDV or am I going to need to buy a new Intel based computer? I really don't want to spend 4K for a new system.

  • Final Cut Pro/Motion Shut Off/Render Errors

I have Final Cut Pro Studio 7. I work mostly with Final Cut and Motion. I have three problems that are occuring on a common basis and I desperately need help.
    1) Final Cut Pro constantly shuts down when attempting to render. Mostly when I am rendering Motion files.
    2) Motion also shuts down when working in it or it completely locks up.
    3) When the Motion files render in Final Cut Pro and I go back to review what I just inserted, purple files show up saying "Render Error In Motion".
I have been trying to figure out how to fix the problem, but everything I do, does not work. Can anyone please help. I have 5 projects I need to get done by the end of next week. Two being due by Tuesday. Any assistance will be helpfull.

First of all, got a crash log? That'd help identify the problem...
When you crash, you get the option of Reporting to Apple? Take that and copy the section of the log with the crashed thread:

  • Final cut to motion

am trying to "send to motion" a sequence (actually just audio) from fcp to motion and keep getting a "general error" message and motion wont launch. help please....

I've just trying this, and it seems to work but only if you send the video and the audio.
Otherwise it isn't a motion project.
Try sending the audio only to soundtrack
Are you using Motion 2 and Final Cut Pro 5 with latest updates?
please take the time to mark a response as solved or helpful

  • Final Cut Pro X freezing when I stack transitions?

I'm trying to place transitions on images that are stacked in my timeline, however every time I try to put a transition on the 5th image, final cut refuses to render the small transition and freezes. I've restarted the computer, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Final Cut, but nothing seems to work.
One thing that fixes the issue is if I'm quick enough to delete the transition before it freezes, the problems stops and I can use Final Cut normally, but the second I try to place the transition, it freezes up again.
I'm on a 2012 iMac 27" with the basic specs. Many videos have been edited on this without any issues so I know it can handle what I'm attempting to do, especially as I've done it many times before.
Is there anyway to resolve the issue? And it seems to be with the transition "scale" at the beginning of the image seen below. I placed "Cross Dissolve" on all of the images at the beginning and end; they all rendered properly and could use final cut without any issues
(There's a video as the base/main file on the timeline, then images that are stacked over the video file. There is cross dissolve at the end of each image and scale transition at the beginning of each image)

  • Final cut pro x freezing while trying to background render. Won't budge.

Final cut pro x and my brand new computer is freezing while trying to background render.  Help!!!

I can't give any specific advice but try these  general  FCP X trouble-shooting suggestions.
Use this free app to trash the preferences. This should be the first thing you try when any problems occur.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
    2. Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3. Trash FCP X using this free app and reinstall it.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
If these 3 measures don't work, create a new User Account (Admin) in System Preferences and try running FCP X from that as it sometimes works miracles.

  • Can I speed up final cut and motion rendering using qmaster?

I have set up a cluster to speed up exporting via compressor, but I am wondering if I can use the same technique to speed up the rendering (not the exporting) in final cut pro, or motion (or other programs included in the suite for that matter)
I read that you can use an xgrid cluster to do this, but I don't have a mac server to use xgrid and would prefer not learning a new program if I can stick with qmaster.
    Thanks

Since your camera is acquiring at the rate of 1.2 frames/sec, that means a frame is ready every 833 ms. This is a function of your camera and may or may not be variable. This is the fastest possible loop rate you can achieve. With that in mind, if your image analysis takes 400ms and the motor 200ms, you still have about 233ms of time left to wait for the next image to be ready.
Yes, by reducing the acquisition window size, you reduce the amount of data moved across the PCI bus to system memory, but the camera control how quickly frames are being sent so this will not speed up your acquistion. It will, however, decrease your processing time since you are processing fewer pixels.
Also, a ring acquisition would be the best acquisition mode to implement since you w
on't need to setup a new IMAQ session each time. If you are worried about not finishing a move before the next image is acquired, you can just use the Wait for Move Complete function in ValueMotion and then continue with the image acquisition.

  • Final Cut renders motion files, but displays them as blank

I ran into a problem today with final cut. I had a clip I wanted to stabilize, so I selected the clip, right clicked, and sent to a motion project, stabilized the clip all fine in motion, saved it, and returned to final cut. Like it is supposed to, the click reappeared, but as the motion file. It needed to be rendered, so i rendered just that clip, and then tried to play it back, and everything was blank in that clip. There was audio, and no video. I would like to figure out why its blank.
Any suggestions, I'm running the latest version of final cut and everything is up to date.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated, and happy new year!

almost impossible to tell from here. First thing to try is to export the clip from Motion, render it from Motion, and open that movie. If it's blank, well, you've got a problem with the source media and we start with a long list of other questions. You'll probably solve this yourself by trying to make the process as simple as possible, open a new project, import a short clip (SmoothCam tends to analyze the entire source clip unless you know how not to do that), and process it from FCP, there's no need to send it to Motion for SmoothCam.

  • ALIASING effect in final cut on motion project imported in sequence

i built a project in motion, and imported it in final cut pro sequence, and although my output setting in motion was ok (apple pro ress 4444, render best etc, ) i had a aliasing problem on still images, thats did not happen when i rendered before my clip from motion and imported it in FC, what is your experience.

Aliasing when rendering Motion projects in the FCP timeline comes from a mismatch between the Field Dominance of the timeline, the Field Dominance of the Motion project within the timeline, the Field Order setting in the Motion project, and/or the Field order of any media within the Motion project.
IOW, Click on your timeline, type ⌘0, check the Field Dominance. Click on the Motion Project in your timeline, type ⌘9, check the Field Dominance of the clip. Change it via the popup when ctrl/right clicking on the setting. Also, right/ctrl-click on your Motion project, select Open in Editor, check the Field Order within project properties of the Motion project and the Field Order for any media within the Motion project.
The best way to avoid mismatches is by "round tripping" your media you wish to send to Motion from within FCP by right/ctrl-clicking on the clip in your timeline, selecting Send To Motion, then do your work in Motion, Save, Quit, and fall back into FCP. This ensures a match between the Motion project and your timeline.
    Make sense?

  • Why won't Final Cut or Motion render my content properly?

About 2 months ago I got a new 2013 27" iMac with the upgraded i7 processor, 4GB of VRAM, and 32GB of RAM. I've recently come across a problem with rendering in Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5. In Final Cut when I play back a clip in the event browser or in the timeline before rendering, the clip looks fine. When it's done rendering, though the clip looks like the frames are jumbled and the clip is choppy and unusable. A similar thing happens in Motion 5. When I create a RAM preview, certain parts of the composotion that are moving look almost split, like a really dramatic rolling shutter effect on a bad camera. It also put on random shapes that vary from black and white stripes in a lower corner, or frames that are completely white, or green rectangles in the corners. These appear in any file I export from Motion, too.
I've tried deleting my Final Cut preferences, but the problem still persists.
I'm not sure if this is a problem with the software, if the graphics card is fried, or if there's a problem with my RAM.

I haven't heard of software problems causing those kind of symtoms.
Try running the Apple Diagnostics test (of the Apple Hardware Test) to see whether it reports something.

  • Final Cut and Motion Roundtripping- FCS2 vs FCS3

I have been getting slow performance and general inefficiency working with Motion files inside of Final Cut with FCS2. I'm working on an Intel based MacBook Pro with 3GB of Ram and Radeon x1600 graphics card. I have been working in HDV1080p30 and only work within one application at a time (I close Motion before going to Final Cut and vice versa).
My question is: Can I expect better performance by upgrading from FCS2 to FCS3 on the same system? I will upgrade immediately if my system can handle the new Final Cut Studio more efficiently.

There are so many possibilities as to why your computer isn't as fast as you want it to be, or as fast as it once was. The amount of data on your drives, overhead of the OS, port malfunction, corrupt preferences, corrupt files on drives (even files you're not using can affect performance, just by being there), age of computer, conflicting 3rd party apps and plug-ins, failing hard drive, failing processor, failing graphics card, failing SMC or PMU, and many many more. There is no way to tell if upgrading to a new version of any software is going to fix your problem. Snow Leopard has less overhead than Leopard, so a new OS might help, but unless you have an Intel Mac, you can't do this.
My guess is, just buying a new set of apps is not the way to go. You need to bench test your machine and find out what, if anything, is misbehaving, and start from there. If it's as simple as not going as fast as you want it to go, but nothing is wrong, then you either need to accept that you're operating at full capacity, or buy a new computer.

  • Final Cut Pro 4 Freezes at startup

I have a new MacBook Pro laptop and am still running Final Cut Pro 4. I installed it, went to boot it up and saw an error message that said I didn't have an AGP graphics card. I was able to fix that with some help.
When I went to boot up the program after fixing that problem, it would start to load and then freeze at the the "loading audio filters" portion of startup, when the splash screen would come up.
I don't know what to do. I was told at the apple store, when I bought this computer that something called Rosetta would allow me to run PowerPC-based programs on this new Intel-based computer.
How can I get this problem fixed so I can run Final Cut Pro 4 on my laptop?
Any advice would be great, unfortunately right now I can't afford to upgrade. So, hopefully there is a simpler, cheaper way to do this.
    Thanks,

    isy,
One of the things dilettantes in the computing world (or those that have drunk Apple's purple punch) fail to understand it the enormous complexity of editing moving images. Once you get your head around the difficulty of this, you will never take the bland assurances of some salesman without some independent checking.
Would you purchase a car with a satellite radio to play your old 8 track tapes just because the salesman calmly told you, "oh certainly, this baby will play those 8 track tapes better than the original players would."
+Caveat Emptor+ applies to ALL things computer - especially highly specialized applications sold by people who neither use nor understand their particular quirks.
Glad you'll get it sorted out and, in the immortal words of the Who, "won't get fooled again".
    Have fun.

  • Importing into Final Cut from Motion

    Hey All,
When I'm done creating title pages etc. in Motion, I export a .mov (using the DV/DVC PRO NTSC setting)file to a folder. I then import the file into Final Cut and add it to my sequence etc.
However, I have noticed that after I import it into Final cut, the colors are flat and the graphics look compressed.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Using Final Cut Studio 5.1.4
    G5
    OS 10.4.9
    4.5 Gb
    Thanks!

It's true. DV/NTSC isn't very nice to graphics and titles. They're always going to look sharper in Motion. If your final delivery format is DV/DVC PRO, there's no way to avoid that, but it might help to reduce the amount of compression used overall (because you're going to be compressing them again on final export).
By exporting your graphics using the Animation codec at Best Quality, and Millions of Colors+, you can achieve lossless compression (plus preserve transparency), so that when you bring the clip into FCP, it will look like the original (until you render it back to DV/NTSC). By only applying DV compression once at the end, you might be able to save some quality.
(Doing what Adam mentioned will work too, and is probably easier. But it's good to know about the Animation codec as well).

  • Final Cut Express HD freezes sometimes

Sometimes FCE will freeze during timeline playback on a certain clip. I insert the clip into the timeline and playback and it freezes and when I click something I get the beach ball. I force quit and go back and it does the same.
I delete the clip and then re-insert the clip it and play it it does it again, but if I use a different clip its fine. I have tried to change the in piont of the clip a bit and it still the same.
In one instance I changed the speed of the clip and it worked fine. This clip is like all my others, DV that I shot on a sony pc 101, imported just fine.
I have about 130 gigs of video and about 10 minutes of edited project so far and this has happened with 2 clips. But is is really bugging me. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance.
    John

Tom- At work now so I'll try and get you the detailed specs later tonight.
My set up is very much "plug-and-play", install defaults. The drives I use are assembled by Pacific Pro Audio using WB and some "Oxford 911" chip set. I know nothing other then they are my audio dealers for the studio and I never have any issues with the drives in the recording studio with my dual 1.8, 2.5 gig ram, OS 10.3.9. I gone through easily a dozen of them on various projects.
They format and split the drives into three volumes before they send them to me as I'm told that is a more efficient way to use for Pro Tools. Again, not a techie here but after 15 years with these guys, they've never be wrong yet so I take the word for it.
As for this particular computer, the only add-on apps I run is Aperture, Dreamweaver, Logic Pro, Sountracks Pro and Final Cut Express. The Prosonus is my only add-on piece of hardware besides the drive. All audio and video is set to go to the external drive, all settings are defaults and I haven't had to load any other drivers.
This comp has had very little work since I picked it up a 6 months ago. Mostly email, a few hours of video and some miscellaneous songwriting in Logic. It's darn near "fresh out of the box". I'd be hard pressed to find anything strange in my set up.
