HI....
Not saying that it is... But it COULD be related to the "FCPx not being able to figure out which window is active" problem....
See what happens is that YOU double click a project and BECAUSE it opens YOU automatically think, like anyone else would, that YOU are ON the timeline ;-) In FCPx' case (not on all setups) you actually NOT. You are, at least according to FCPx in some OTHER window like the even library..... And If you are in the event library ALL the options in the share menu WILL be grayed out...I have had this problem a zillion times along others relating to the problem. And the really simple solution is to ONCE click inside the timeline. And then try again.
I would ALWAYS USE the share-icon (Arrow Pointing to Right) nect to the "Show or hide inspector" icon --- it seems to have a better understanding of where you are and WHAT you wanna do...
Example with screenshots
Image One - I have just double clicked the project that then opened... However, FCPx thinks I am IN the event library. So the options are gray.
Notice that the timeline Background IS DARK GRAY (NOT ACTIVE)
Image Two - I have now specifically CLICKED inside the timeline --- Notice HOW its background is NOW lighter gray == Active
Now the options are no longer grayed out

My question is that the output video is the quality I wanted, and have uploaded to youtube before, as you can see some of the other videos there, but when I uploaded this video (thank you video) the quality is jumpy and nasty and I am not really sure what happened.
I am also using the panasonic HC-V520m full HD camera.
any info would be great.

Hello Serenity99.   In my rather limited experience with this, I have had much success with just copying and pasting the project from within FCP X.  All of the properties (retiming, themes, effects, music, sound effects etc.) copy over exactly between the two, which is great.  The only thing is that while the transitions and retiming copy over in the one go, you may have to go back and copy and paste any titles seperately as they are placed above the clips (well in my case they have been) but they will copy over nicely and as previously configured.  I have not found this to be a big hassle at all.  I was releaved to find that the process was as easy as it was.  Mind you, I have not has as hiccup free a time with copy and pasting from other applications like iMovie to FCP X.  Although I can select and copy the projects, all the other editing and rejiging has been jumbled and required much reworking.  But if you stick to within FCP X it is easy as pie and works wonderfully.

• Can't use Final Cut Express Export Using Quick Time Conversion with iDVD.

I am using iDVD 08v 7.0.4 and until 3 days ago I could import and create iDVD's using Final Cut Express export using Quick Time Conversion. There was an update that downloaded for iDVD. Since then, I can only use Final Cut Express Exports that is a self contained Quick Time Movie.
I have never had this kind of apple and apple problem. I am disappointed that I'm having apple issues like this.

Are you on latest 10.5.x release and latest FCE updates? Your info line says 10.5.1 and you didn't list FCE version. Not saying that will fix problem, but might help. You also might want to explain how you did your Quicktime conversion.

• Every video put into Final Cut Pro exports in horrible quality regardless of format/settings.

Hello fellow Mac enthusiasts,
I'm having a problem which may or may not have been plaguing my studio since day one. Every video that we edit in Final Cut Pro exports in MUCH lower quality than it was when it was imported, not only that, the file size of the newly exported video is several times the size of the original. What I end up getting is a file too large for our clients to email around. We recently had a client come into our studio with a flash drive full of 15 second avi's no larger than 900 KB, he wanted a few of them edited together with simple cross fade transitions, and even a few seconds of dead space cut out. He needed them to be the highest quality possible for a powerpoint presentation he may now be unable to give. At first I exported them as Uncompressed avi's, best quality, thousands of colors, and no sound. The resulting file was not only blurrier, but now 260.5 MB!! And that one was with zero edits! The original was 803 KB and crystal clear. So after that I decided to try a few tests. We also produce a bi-weekly hour-long local television show, which looks fine on television but now I'm wondering how much better it could and should look. I've been exporting that out as a Quicktime, Apple ProRes 442 HQ, Interlaced bottom-field-first, zero filters, both compressor native and NTSC 720 X 480. I attempted this method on the client's original 803 KB with zero edits and not only did it export a completely unusable video compared to the original, but it was now 57.1 MB. What is going on here? Is Final Cut conspiring against me? I'm guessing it's something in my settings which I'll shamefully admit I know absolutely nothing about. Could anyone help a struggling video editor do his job?
Joey

Hey guys sorry it took me song long to respond it's been a busy week filled with many things not relating to final cut...
In response to David's post, the original file is indeed larger than 720X480, though it's dimensions are not available to see in the 'more info' associated with the file itself. By comparison, the apple pro res LT file I exported through final cut of the same avi file is 720X480, and looks significantly worse.

This was after I created a new project, made the sequence settings into Apple ProRes lt 30p under the audio/video settings in Final Cut, and exported it as the same with 'current' dimensions (it was listed as 850X637, maybe that was the original?) Although I did have to render the original avi itself once it was placed in the timeline. I guess there's no way to know exactly what sort of avi my original file is so I can match my sequence to it? The 'more info' (to be fair im sort of used to 'properties') leaves something to be desired..
I guess my question is: what else can I change in my settings to leave the quality of the video intact, if anything?
Thanks everyone.

• Why won't my final cut 7 export my entire :30 movie in pro res 422 60i

Why won't my final cut 7 export my entire :30 movie in pro res 422 60i?
And some transitions are not rendering properly.

Post this on the Final Cut Studio forum. This is the FCPX forum.

• IPhoto or Final Cut bug: export creates 19 stereo tracks attached to file!

I am exporting three slideshows from iPhoto '08 to Quicktime to be placed in a Final Cut Pro project. The first two exported fine. The longest one (just over ten minutes) exports and plays in QuickTime, but when you import to Final Cut, it mysterious has 19 stereo tracks attached, and won't play unless you remove all of those tracks (hence, no music) Again, the shorter two come in just fine with one stereo pair, as you would expect.
I installed the iPhoto update, tried again, still the same thing...

Ryan:
Is it just that one particular slideshow or will any slideshow exported and imported to FCP display that problem? Also, if you have Quicktime Pro, open the problem file with it and check to see if if contains those 19 tracks. If not, then maybe FCP is causing the issue.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

• Premiere Pro CC crashes upon XML import from Final Cut 7 Export

Hello all,
I have recently tried to import a FCP7 XML into Premiere Pro CC 2014, and a few seconds after initiating the export Premiere Pro crashes. Any solution to this???
I Exported on a Mac Tower running FCP7 and then imported the XML on a PC Running the latest Premiere CC v8.1. Could that be a problem in itself?
Also I'm considering a workaround where I move the FCP7 to FCPX, generate the XML then try importing again. Worth a shot?
Also trying this strictly on an Apple computer to import and save before moving to my main PC station. Thoughts?
The sequence I'm trying to import is fairly massive too, not sure if this is why, but it is mult-layered, both in audio and video and is running about an hour in length with several other blocks of video files after that, probably running up to 2 hrs. This should not be a problem, right?
Help! It would be greatly appreciated to get out of the clutches of final cut finally.

I am having the same issue.
Your best bet is to logon to Adobe website and go to customer support. If you chat with someone they can go on your computer and trash all your preferences. Your computer will be stable again. It worked great for me, but I just imported an XML from Resolve and it is crashing the system again.
Good luck.

• Downgrading to iMovie from Final Cut Express - exporting?

My husband and I used to be into video editing before the kids were born. We have two 6 year old macbooks and one is dead and one is dying so we are forced to make a decision here on how to procede. My husband does one or two hobby type movies a year, but we mostly use our video editing software for home movies of the kids now. We don't have the money to spend on these things we used to, or the time to really be trying to tinker around with Final Cut anymore. So we decided to buy the $600.00 Mac Mini instead of a new laptop. We are thinking about switching back to iMovie as well, since buying the newer version of Final Cut will be pretty spendy, and iMovie seems to have come a long way since we last used it. We have a really old version of Final Cut right now, so I think upgrading would be necessary if we stick with Final Cut.
I am really confused about the new iMovie though. We have been using a Sony Digital 8 camcorder and storing our movies on tape. I talked to the guy at the Apple store about the Mac Mini and asked why there was no 'export to camera' on the new iMovie (I'm actually using '09, but I am told 11 doesn't have it either). He looked stumped and actually said he had never heard of doing that and why would I want to do that. I asked where I was supposed to store our final movies and he said the hard drive. I was surprised and told him that hard drives crash, but tapes last much longer. He said tapes degrade, and I said yeah, but not for like 30 years or longer, our hard drives have only lasted on average 5 years. But later I was thinking that maybe it wasn't a bad idea to back up our tapes on the hard drive. We have a 1 TB external which we would probably fill when all is said and done. I am thinking of getting some cloud storage from BackBlaze as well, so I started thinking that maybe tapes are becoming obsolete and we should really do this HD thing (for now, until a better storage option comes out in a few years because HD's are obviously not ideal).
But then I started looking at the new iMovie and I have no idea how to export a final movie into a file that won't lose any quality. In final cut there is the 'self contained movie' setting which is a full quality version of the final movie. But in iMovie, I can't find an equivilent. How are you exporting your final movies in iMovie and where are you storing them? And if we downgrade to iMovie, will there be a loss in quality? I saw another thread that says that iMovie 11 is exporting movies that lose a lot of quality. Has Apple fixed this yet? When we started using iMovie years ago we were told that it imports and exports the exact same quality since it is all digital there would be no degradation. But now that I read that there is a loss of quality in the new iMovie I am nervous to downgrade to iMovie. Can anyone shed some light on these issues for me? Should we stick with Final Cut, or can we make iMovie work?

Is this a really slow board, or did I ask a silly question? Why no responses?

• Final Cut Pro exporting

I just installed Final Cut Studio 2 and CS4 Web Standard and Production Premium. When I am in Final Cut Pro if I go to File - Export - Using Quicktime Conversion I do not get the option of Flash Video (FLV). I get this option on another machine I have with CS3 instead of CS4. Any idea why this option is not available on this configuration?

Perhaps Adobe changed the nature of the export option.
It appears to be an Adobe issue, based upon the description of your two machines.
In any case, you can export as a reference movie and have far more controls using the Adobe Media Converter for flv.
good luck

• Self Contained Final Cut Pro Export Files unreadable in New Final Cut Pro 7

Has anyone come across this? I was using Final Cut Pro 5, created a self contained file of a current project 1.9GB in size. Uploaded the new version of Final Cut Pro 7 and upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now it tells me that this is unrecognizable as a movie file. Quicktime or Final Cut Will not open this file. I'm puzzled.

Hi VideoJunkie
I have not come across this. However, my previous FCP 6 Self-Contained Exported ProRes 422 standard (not HQ) files which are actually 1440 x 1080 will only playback in the new QT version 10 using that aspect ratio (whatever the actual screen ratio is at 1440 x 1080, I'm not sure, but the video width is squashed together... I suppose it has something to do with showing it in square pixels versus rectangle... or do I have that turned around. I'm not sure, I have always been confused about the ProRes 1440 x 1080 format, all I know is it plays back properly in 1920 x 1080 when I transcode it for DVD or ATV, iPhone etc..). In any case, you need QT player 7 (standard or pro version) to display these files at the intended aspect ratio of 1920 x 1080. The old QT Pro player version 7 will let you change this in the properties window, but the QT 7 standard player will not let you (those options are grayed out) and the new QT X player doesn't even show these options (i.e totally unavailable).
Also, these previous files will play just fine (for me anyway) in FCP version 7. If you having a different issue where they will not play at all, then I'm not sure how to help you, but I just wanted you to be aware that my old self-contained files from FCP 6 do work (for me anyway) in the new FCP7 under Snow Leopard.
(ADDED) I must ask, what codec were your previous exported self-contained QT movies? Do you have this codec on the commuter your trying to play your old master self-contained exports on?

• Final Cut Pro X - Overheating Issues

Whenever I use Final Cut Pro X on my MacBook Pro, SMC Fan Control says my computer is 80 Degress Celcius, and issues a warning. Why does this program overheat my MBP? Any help?
Thanks in advance.

FCPX will render the timeline while exporting hence the CPU temp rise. You can select parts of the timeline to be rendered. It might be adavatagous to render the timeline in sections and wait for the CPU to cool down and then do another render section. In the modify menu there is a RENDER SELECTION option.
Sending feedback to apple would be a good idea as it is apparent that there should be an option in the preferences to manage how much memery and CPU is used for rendering.

• Final Cut Pro Export To You Tube blurry

Hello there
I have just finished editing an HD video using final cut pro. I output as a mater file and it looks great! Crystal clear!
I then tried to upload to YouTube, the 360 version (lowest quality) is very blurred but the HD version is crystal clear? Problem is most peoples YouTube will default to 360 or 420 and the video just doesnt look good? I have not had this issue before? I have used a different camera this time, that is the only diference I can think of? I have also tried the direct upload to YouTube from FCP with the same result. I would have thought this option would use the optimum codec for YouTube?? So disappointed as the video looks great and dont want a blurry video being out there??

YOuTube recompresses the video. Can you post a link to it?

• Final Cut Pro exports very low quality video to DVD

I tried exporting a timeline to a DVD from Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 today. Every clip in the timeline was 1080x1920, but the DVD export menu insisted (without offering an option to change settings) that Final Cut export at 720x480. The Blu-Ray menu offers 1080x1920 exporting, though. Is there any way to get the app to export to DVDs at 1080x1920?

Yes, you can create an AVCHD Disc which is basically Blu-ray quality on a cheapo standard DVD.
Select Share>Blu-ray and in the window that opens make sure the Output Device is your DVD burner, not the hard drive.
Note that you will only get about 35 minutes at the highest quality.
If your video is longer the data rate will be reduced but should still produce good quality hi-def up to an hour or so.
You must play the DVD in a Blu-ray player. It will not work in a normal DVD player.

• Final Cut HD- Exports Audio only?

Well, I have had the best of luck with Final Cut Express HD-  I am not sure why, BUT NOW, everytime I export a video (quicktime or .mpeg4) it only exports the Audio and No video.
I don't think I have have changed any settings, but if I have - how do I change them back?  This is killing my business as I make short web videos for auctioneers.
What am I doing wrong- all of a sudden after two years all I can export is audio and no video?

Maybe you have inadvertently selected NONE in the video export options?

• IDvd 4.01 & QT/Final Cut Pro Exports, need advice

Hi,
In tests with small Quicktime exported movies from the timeline in Final Cut Pro 4.5 -- meaning NOT making a full, new self-contained QT movie but just a smaller "reference" file -- I was able to burn fine 2 and 5 minute tests.
When I got to a longer (45 min) completed FCP timeline, and tried the same thing (dragging the exported reference file to iDVD), I had problems. Ran it overnight, and in the morning it was still in stage 3, and when I tried to stop it the whole computer crashed.
It takes FOREVER for FCP to export a longer fully self-contained quicktime movie...I am wondering if anyone has any info/advice on whether idvd:
-- has trouble working with these QT 'reference' files when they have to use/
access rendered media in Final Cut pro.
-- If it is worth the time to make a fully self-contained "separate" quicktime
movie from Final cut pro before dragging it for iDVD to encode for DVD
Thanks
Brigitte

Hi B
Well a 45 min movie - to be coded as mpeg2 to a DVD disk takes time.
on a dual G5 2GHz - about 60 min
on a single G4 600MHz - about 10 - 20 hours
make a diagram and find out what would be relevant to Your set-up.
