Final Cut X glacial slowdown with large media library

I am struggling with a vexing problem. I stupidly went to bed as I told Final Cut X to "import all" on a "prepared to leave my edit bay for the other coast" 4TB data drive containing just three duplicated Final Cut X timelines, but many, many other files. So, after about 12 hours of importing, NONE of my timelines had been recognized, but over 25,000 files were added to the media bin.
So, with this daunting number of files, Final Cut X (latest) on 10.9 (latest) on a Mac Mini with 8TB of RAM, becomes slower than molasses at absolute zero. Cleverly, I tried a "select all" and "DELETE" to rid myself of the mega media bin (more than 25,000 items) and, after attempting to delete for about 8 HOURS, Final Cut X crashed.
Now I am trying to delete a few at a time, a few thousand times, but this has proved a no-go. To select, say, three files seen on the screen in front of me takes about 30 minutes, as the daunting age old clean operating issue of MacOS seems to be at play: to select three files, each of the files must ask permission of all other files before allowing themselves to be selected.
Doing ANYTHING in Final Cut X with so many files at play takes eons of time in a 64 bit world.
Well, I will continue to post on this issue as I work it out. Fun trying to do this in the midst of moving a house (of stuff) to another house.
A note to Final Cut X programmers: I am the guy who forced the rewrite of the App Store (remember that?) having found its databasing flaws. Here is how it works, or should work: when a user mistakenly does an "import all," and the process sees the massive nature of the future - IMMEDIATELY a dialog should appear. It warns about the huge number of files which would result in 100+ of hours of content, and provides alternative choices, which are:
1) Only import located Final Cut X timelines and associated media. (most salient)
2) Only import Quicktime HD movie files.
3) Only import Quicktime SD movie files.
4) Only import bitmap images.
5) Cancel.
It would be cute to add a date function to each choice, like "Created After MM/YYYY" with editable date fields. Focusing an import is what a pro wants.
Import All is pointless in the extreme, and clogs Final Cut X beyond functionality.
About THAT: When a media library grows to massive proportion, when a user attempts ANYTHING in Final Cut X, instantly, there should be a Dialog Box explaining the situation, and a radio button to suspend Final Cut X and Enter a Media Management Mode of a TEXT LIST ONLY allowing simple, fast, mass deletion. In reality, with 25,000+ files in the media bin, simply shrinking from showing 30 seconds of media to Showing 1 second of media takes about 7-10 hours wherein the computer suffers.

Well, the fix:
First, sleep, which I haven't done in a while. Moving a house during Christmas is epic and restless.
Second, unhide the Library. Not seeing it gives old dogs a head scratch.
Third, delete Final Cut prefs
com.apple.FinalCut.LSSharedFileList.plist
com.apple.FinalCut.plist
Fourth: get and/or update Event Manage X and select the projects on your connected drives. You DID save everything nowhere near your boot drive, didn't you?
Then, even on a baby Mac Mini, at least 1080 editing  to feature length, works fine. I have a 1:58:00 and a 59:00 edit in HD working nicely. I do not travel with my Mac Pro Towers, but I must travel with Final Cut.

  • Integrating Final Cut Server 1.5 with Active Directory

Following the directions in the Final Cut Server Setup Guide and I am running into errors. Fun with Final Cut Server. Fun with Kerberos.
Final Cut Server v.1.5 is running on an Intel Xserve running 10.5.6 Server, joined to AD. Active Directory is running on a Windows Server 2008 setup.
I dropped the ini files on the domain controllers, as directed by Apple KB (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3688) and I ran the commands directed in the setup guide.
The adprincadd command should be run literally, of course, but there's a mistake straight-away when it should read "./adprincadd.pl", the ".pl" is missing. Also it says "fcsvr/fqdn of fcsvr", so naturally I replaced the fqdn, but the "fcsvr" prefixed threw me off. It gave me errors until I opened Kerberos.app and notcied that the kerb ticket was in ldap/, then the command worked for me. At least no errors, until I checked the ticket and it said I had no permissions and that the keytab entry was invalid. Wheeee.
    1. First I tried:
    (some info redacted)
    node09:sbin root# ./adprincadd.pl -dc dc01.example.com. fcs.example.com.
Getting kerberos principal for computer account
    Kerberos principal is ---
    Getting computer id...---
    Getting AD Domain...---
    Base DN is dc=example,dc=com
getting kerb ticket using [email protected] got ticket

    Computer record is at CN=---,CN=Computers,DC=example,DC=com

    at ./adprincadd.pl line 165
    2. Then I noticed the /ldap in Kerberos.app and changed the adprinadd command:
Everything ran well, with no errors...
    Finding kvno...2
    Reading /etc/krb5.keytab...done.
    Creating new keytab file...done.
    Writing out temporary keytab...done.
Making backup of old keytab and moving new keytab into place...done.
Operation Completed. You can verify with "kinit <ad user>; kvno -k /etc/krb5.keytab ldap/---.example.com"
    3. Verifying with kinit gave me the keytab errors:
    kinit matx; kvno -k /etc/krb5.keytab ldap/fcs.example.com
Please enter the password for [email protected]:
ldap/[email protected]: kvno = 2, keytab entry invalid

    Thoughts?

Hello, I'm having issues with the client login after AD integration. I followed the steps from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3818 and the Terminal output reported a success.
I'm able to add AD groups in Final Cut Server Group Permissions. However, when I try logging in on the FCServer client using credentials associated with AD group I've added, I'm getting an error message from the client stating:
"Please re-enter the username and password or contact the server administrator. Please note that the username and password are case-sensitive."
The FQDN is correct in the Server field of the client.
I'm able to log into the client using locally created user accounts that I've created on the server so I know the client is communicating correctly.
The only thing I can find in the Console for the client machine is this:
    11/25/09 10:50:12 AM /Users/*/Desktop/Final Cut Server.app/Contents/MacOS/Final Cut Server[1773] Warning: accessing obsolete X509Anchors.
In the server Console, this is a suspect message: /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Server/Final Cut Server.bundle/Contents/MacOS/fcsvr_stored[77891] pps proxy error: dsDoDirNodeAuth = -14091
Not finding much info out there regarding this. Any guidance is appreciated.

  • Can you upgrade from Final Cut Pro 3 to Final Cut Pro Sudio 2 with upgrade?

Does anyone know if you can upgrade from Final Cut Pro 3 to Final Cut Pro Sudio 2 with $699 upgrade?
I purchased Final Cut Pro 2 years back and then purchased the Final Cut Pro 3 upgrade. I have not used it in years, but now I want to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. Is this possible by just purchasing the upgrade?

Apple's web page has the requirements:
    http://store.apple.com/AppleStore/WebObjects/BizCustom?qprm=78313&productLearnMo re=MA886Z/A
The $699.00 upgrade version requires a valid serial number from a commercial version of Final Cut Studio, Production Suite, or Final Cut Pro 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. Academic and not-for-resale versions are not eligible for this upgrade.

  • Will the new final cut pro x work with my Final cut pro version 6.0.6 data

will the new final cut pro x work with my Final cut pro version 6.0.6 data

    Thanks Tom.
So I will need  upgrade to FCP 7 first, then convert to an XML file in 6.0.6, then convert to another file that FCP X can read? I have a lot of half done projects that need finishing. Is this process very complex and time consuming?
Maybe I should be approaching this from a different angle. The reason I am asking is that I now need to upgrade to a new Mac book pro and have been told that I cant run final cut pro 6.0.6 on the new models using maverick. Is this true?

Is final cut pro 6 compatible with snow leopard? I don't want to upgrade the OS if I lose FCP.

DO NOT MAKE AN IRREVERSIBLE DECISION.   You should clone your startup drive so you can quickly return your system to it's previous state if there's a problem.  Although Nick is always right, do you really want to trust him (or me for that matter).

    re:FCP3
Some people purchase FCP3 and then the upgrade to FCP5. It is less expensive than purchasing FCP5 as a new install. You may be able to find a copy of FCP4.5HD out there as well for a low price.
That being said, while some use FCP3 (or FCP4.5) with 10.4, 10.4.x and QT7.x. will be happiest with FCP5.
    re: burning.
Once the file is exported as a quicktime DV file, iMovie does not care about the origin. It should work just fine. DVDSP gives you much more control and greater flexability in setting up menus, looks, operation etc, but is not required.
    Good luck.

me too version 10.8. It would have been nice to know yosemite was going to crap out my primary video editing software! I use this for my video editing for my business video production and it would have been nice to know ahead of time or here's a crazy idea how about the software developers who are making millions off final cut pro sales release a fix BEFORE apple roles out yosemite for free. I don't have time to chase down every blog in the world to see issues etc. The reason I bought a mac is I just need it to work so I can work on my business.

Just get into "General" -> last option is "RESET" -> Opt for "RESET NETWORK SETTINGS"
Your phone will reeboot in a couple of minutes n then get fine on with full signal on the wifi scale.
Worked perfect for me. Do try n let me know.

As Final Cut Studio consists of several applications, either go to your System Profiler under Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info, and select Applications to determine which applications are PowerPC, or visit this website and check the version info of each application to see what works and what doesn't:

  • Re-install Final Cut Studio 1 Probs with old fcp files and compressor

We crashed our G5 and reinstalled OSX 10.4.8 (Build 8N1430) and FC Studio 1 from original media. In the past (not now) the G5 was connected to the internet and was set to auto-update. I'm assuming and have been told by those working with the system at the time that both FCP and OSX were regularly updated online. We recently re-installed the OS and FCS 1. We have not re-connected the box to the internet; have not updated OS or App software from the versions on installs disks, have not re-registered any software online with apple.
When re-installing the OS, I archived the old system.
    My problems are:
    1) I can't open old fcp files (projects). These fcp files are projects saved both to an external 500G LaCie and saved on the macintosh hard drive. I cannot open old fcp files archived in the previous system folder on the HD. I get the message "General Error 41" when trying to open these files. I also cannot open old (pre-re-install) quicktime files made with old FCP assets.
I can open new projects and files saved since re-install.
    2) (probably related) Compressor will not open and gives me the message "Compressor quit unexpectedly..." I tried a second re-install of DVD studio pro Compressor package. I have a dump of the console crash log for Compressor below.
The G5 in question is currently Not connected to the internet and keeps trying to get online. We have Not re-registered with Apple via the internet either the OS or FC Studio 1 or any of the re-installed software. When I open FCP is asks to reg. Logs show the system trying to get an ethernet connection all the time.
Should I put the box online and register and update? Do I have to do this?
Are the pre-re-installed fcp projects "too-new" for the re-installed (older) FCP to read/open?
In general, I don't want editing bays to be online for these kind of reasons. Is this impossible anymore?
Is it know that Compressor and other elements of OSX and FC Studio can get into versioning issues with online updates such that re-install with cause incompatibility?

  • Can't open Final Cut X - Stop Responding with Event

Im working on a project for over a year, and suddenly I can't open Final Cut with my project and event.
It stops responding while loading my event.
I already changed the location of the biggest files (original media and renders), so I just have my event and my project files on the final cut folders.
I've tried to open this in another computer, but it still didn't work.
When I erase my event and project, there's no problem with Final Cut.
    Any suggestion?
    Thank you!

Why are you moving folders around?
Was FCPX acting abnormally before you moved these folders?
What do you mean by "erase  my event and project"?

  • Final Cut Server Error Result Too Large

In Final Cut Server when trying to check out a project or add files to a project i get the following error ::
Error: could not read block 5469422 of relation 1663/16385/16653: Result too large
I have seen similar post's but no resolution.
Final Cut Server on Xserve 10.5.8
    XSAN 2.2
Present on all 12 client machines

Does this occur only on specific projects or all projects?  If it only happens on a specific project it's likely a invalid asset in which deleting and re-cataloging it would be the simplest solution.  If this happens with any asset you try to check out, then there may be a larger database issue and you may consider restoring from a backup.

  • My Final Cut X Projects are quite large.

I have a slight problem with my Final Cut installation... my Project folder is weighing in at 124 gb, with two projects. One of whom is just 20 seconds long, the other 1:30 hours. The raw files weigh in at 24 gb.
It also seems to slow my computer down to almost death. Its like its eating my RAM even when im not using it.
Would there maybe be some way to make it save to my external drive instead?
    Here are my Specs:
    iMac (2008)
    4 GB RAM
    320 GB HDD
2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    OS X 10.8.2
(Maybe this machine is a bit under the requiered specifications?)
    Thankful for help,

This is my pet checklist for questions regarding FCP X performance - you may have already addressed some of the items but it's worth checking.
Make sure you're using the latest version of the application - FCP X 10.0.5 runs very well on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB. I run it with Lion 10.7.5.
First, check that you have at least 20% free space on your system drive.
For smooth playback without dropping frames, make sure 'Better Performance' is selected in the FCP X Preferences - Playback Tab.
If you have not already done so, move your Projects and Events to a fast (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD. Make sure the drive's formatted OS Extended (journalling's not required for video). You should always keep at least 20% free space on the Hard Drives that your Media, Projects and Events are on.
Check the spec of your Mac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Check the spec of your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install of the OS would be recommended.
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
If your playback in FCP X is not good, I strongly recommend you use ProRes 422 Proxy - it edits and plays back like silk because the files are small but lightly compressed (not much packing and unpacking to do) - but remember to select 'Original or Optimised Media' (FCP X Preferences > Playback) just before you export your movie, otherwise it will be exported at low resolution.
The downside of 'Proxy' is that it looks awful. DON'T use Proxy when you're assessing things like video quality - especially focus.
If you have plenty of processor power, for the ultimate editing experience, create Optimised Media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Personally, I work with XDCAM EX and h.264 from a Canon DSLR. Both of these run fine with my system, but I do transcode multicam clips.
Hide Audio Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power. (Use the switch icon at the bottom-right of your timeline to select a format without waveforms if you don't need them at the moment, then switch back when you do).
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot. There's a great application for this, called Event Manager X - for the tiny cost it's an invaluable application.
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/EventManagerX/
Unless you cannot edit and playback without it, turn off Background Rendering in Preferences (under Playback) - this will help general performance and you can always render when you need to by selecting the clip (or clips) and pressing Ctrl+R.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Are there any Final Cut Pro 4 conflicts with 10.3 Panther?

I just bought FLIP4MAC software which will allow me to save my Final Cut Pro 4 Quicktime movies as Windows Media Files (I make short comedy films), but neglected to see that it only works with 10.3 Panther. I've been running 10.2.8 for over a year and it doesn't have any conflicts with FCP 4 that I can see. I've purchased the 10.3 installation disks already. Any conflicts I should be aware of before I jump in and install?
    Thanks.

AS long as ur not in the middle of a project, I'd go ahead and install.
