Final Step away from Windoze (Need help) [easily SOLVED]

Hi all,
I am preparing to take my final step away from windows OS, as the more I learn about Linux, the more I detest the majority of my hard drive being dedicated to a monopolus (if that's a word), closed monster. However there is one thing that I need, Starcraft and TF2 (team fortress 2). In an i686 installation this would be very easy... install wine. This will not work, as I am posting in Arch64, you must have guessed that I have a 64 bit system.
I know there are ways to get WINE working on Arch64, outlined here
http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit
I was wondering whether you guys had any better ideas, so that I don't have to stuff my lean mean 64bit machine with 32bit libs
Thanks for the help.

hmm...
Look at the wine homepage and see what they say. They usually have some really good pointers, per game. Just search the AppDB for the game you wanna play. simple as that!
You can also probably find something about FAM there. (I use gamin and it works fine)
Also know that if you and some friends sometimes put up LANs to play against eachother that can be cumbersome with a linux computer, due to the fact that normal home networks don't have ddns on their dhcp network. That sure have messed up things for me a couple of times. Windows has some default programs that kinda solves that, but it has failed for me aswell from time to time.
Dunno if there's more reasons yet why home networks sometimes fucks up since i'm still kinda in the proccess of learning. Just wanted to save you some trouble and let you know that having a windows partition (on say 20-30gb) can be a neat backup sometimes.

  • Help - I am 1 step away from a forced autopsy!!!!!

Okay, I'm a guy and I put off downloading movies from my Canon Elura 80 camcorder for the last 10 + years.  It has seriously caught up with me! Any way, the Canon Elura 80 has an on-board 4 pin IEEE94 DV port.  Since none of ny current PC's have an IEEE1494 port, I dug out my Sony Viao RS470DX with Win XP Professional SP3.  It took several days but I finally have it configured and up and runnig again.  So my Lady tells me on our 50Th. anniversary that she epets to actually see the movies from the camcorder downloaded and placed on DVD very soon.  So here I am 1 step away from an autopsy for not getting the work done for almost 10 years.  I know, I procrastinate, just a tad. I have the RX470 working again.  The problem is that because the Canon only drops the video image via the onboard IEEE139 port, i needed to go  Sony bevcause it has the required 3 pin and 6 pin IEEE1394 ports. With the Sony back and runnig, it does not matter what software I use, the Canon video camera cannot be seen by the computer.  The Canon shows a flashing DV Input on the screen, which indicates that it cannot find the IEEE1394 port.  Movie Maker, and all similar software (Capture) error out saying that they cannot find the camera (capture device). What is wrong and please do nt offer to pay my funeral expenses for procrasting!

The camera is a Canon Elura 80 and it has a 4 pin IEEE 1394 port. The camera can't find the port, yet it worked just fine several years back. I've tried disabling the port, uninstalling the port, deleting the controller and then reinstalling the code from the I386 cabinet (folder) using the expand command from a DOS prompt, then from Device Manager -> Computer doing a hardware scan and letting the system reinstall the code. The IEEE 1394 port shows in the network connections although if you look at the properties none of checkboxes are checked.  According to the literature, the IEEE 1394 is OHCI compatible as is the video camera. Are there any diagnostics I can run to verify the correct operation of the port?  Can I restor the hardware factory defaults? I also tried a system restore, but that did not clear the problem.

    Hi Suresh,
    Thank you for your reply.
Devices should appear in the top right of iTunes, as seen in this image:
    From:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Connect a device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12449
If you do not see your iOS device in this menu when you connect it to your computer, it may not be recognized by iTunes. In this case, I recommend the troubleshooting steps in this article:

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Need Help In Solving Writing To Queue Problem

    Hi Guys,
I have two threads that are adding to the same message queue. The first one is suppose to add four integers consecutively. Meanwhile the second thread add an integer in between the four integers. Because of that my application is not working properly. I would like that when a thread is adding then the other must wait before it adds. The method that the threads call to add to the queue are all synchronized, but it is still behaving like that.
I need help in solving it.
    Thanks.

Please what do you mean by synchronizing on the same object? Can you explain it to me?
When you synchronize a block of Java code, you synchronize on a particular object, which is called the Monitor.
The effect is only to prevent another thread running this, or another block of code synchronized on the same object.
If you use synchronized methods, then the monitor is the object to which the method belongs (or the class if the method is static). The same synchronized method can be executed simultaneously on a different instance of the object.

  • Need Help In Solving Positioning Problem

    Hi Guys,
I have a 3 X 3 grid of JLabels of images. I constructed the grid using the grid layout.
I would like to move a round object which represents a car and place that object in a particular cell. So the grid will be like a background.
    My questions are these:
    1) How can i position this object in a specific cell based on the rows and column values? for instance if i want to put the object in [1][0].
    2) How do i move this object to a different cell using the rows and column values. for instance if i want to move the object in [1][0] to [2][1]
Thank you all for your help

This question has nothing to do with Java 2D. I've removed the second thread you started in that forum.
Thank you for providing a link to this thread in the cross post.

  • Uploading from iPhone - need help

When I attempt to upload a photo from my iPhone to my Web Gallery, I get the following error message on the iPhone:
"None of your .Mac accounts have been configured for posting from mobile devices. You must first enable this feature on the .Mac website"
Any idea how I "enable this feature" as I can't seem to find it anywhere on my .Mac homepage or account info, etc.
    Thanks.

    It's STILL driving me nuts.
Why can't Apple just make it 'Apple-like?' Where is a set of instructions on how to do this?
This is a new far-out concept they're adding here, I want to use it like a Flickr set amongst my iPhone totin' friends, so we can all just send some fun photos up in the cloud, and look at it. This is clearly something we all seem to need help with for the set-up...
    AND YET...
Simple question that my iPhone prompts me to ask: Where do I tell my .Mac account that I want my Web Gallery to work with my iPhone?
No sign of it on my 'homepage' on .mac, no explaination in iPhoto 08 prefs or help, no explaination ANYWHERE. Searching is NOT helpful - very poor 'help' page on this topic.
It's not working for me, and I had this button activated on my iPhone yesterday, and an iPhoto Web Gallery for the last 4 hours...
It's just not very clear, Apple. Get it together, please. The only mention of this on my .mac "logged-in" screen is on a descriptive ad for iLife 08 and .Mac.
Well, give me the respect of noticing I've already bought it all.

Hi, Lee. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
From this Apple Knowledge Base article:
Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed).  Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.
Tip: If you don't see this menu or menu choice, you're probably not started from the disc yet.
Note: The default keyboard layout is U.S. English while started from the installation disc. If you use a keyboard layout other than U.S English, use the Input menu (the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar) to select the desired layout before typing a new password.
Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume.
Select the user name of your original administrator account.
Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.

    Hi Vikash,
This query will not produce results as per requirement:
    Try it with following data
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (1,777,'abc','2/14/2014 11:15','3/14/2014 9:02')
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (1,777,'abc','2/21/2014 9:00','3/14/2014 9:02')
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (2,777,'abc','2/28/2014 9:00','3/14/2014 9:02')
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (2,777,'abc','3/7/2014 9:02','3/14/2014 9:02')
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (2,777,'abc','3/14/2014 9:02',NULL)
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (5,888,'xyz','2/14/2014 11:15','3/14/2014 9:02')
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (5,888,'xyz','2/21/2014 9:00','3/14/2014 9:02')
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (5,888,'xyz','2/28/2014 9:00','3/14/2014 9:02')
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (7,888,'xyz','3/7/2014 9:02',NULL)
    Insert into @TempTABLE values (6,888,'xyz','3/14/2014 9:02',NULL)
as per the problem statement, all records having 888,'xyz' should be updated with 6 not 7 as max effective date is associated with 6 not 7.
    Ashutosh
    Nope.
can you check the original post first. It clearly states output as having 7 as id for all the records with 888,xyz
also your above posted sample data is different from original sample data as you've dates jumpled up for the records with ids 6 and 7
Please see the illustration for original sample data
    --sample table for illustration

  • I recently up-graded to Firefox 4.0 and now I have lost all of my settings at the top of the page. I need my hotmail and muy bookmarks etc back like they were. I no longer have aol but can't seem to get away from it. Help....Marilyn

All of my settings have changed at the top of my page since I up-graded to Mozilla 4.0. How do i recover everything? Even my hot-mail and bookmark bars are gone. Help

    Ok this is bizzare!
Thank you for your response, I went throught each and every step without any luck, even got the recovery programme, and painstakingly tried to sift through all that mumbojumbo to find what i needed. finally found the bookmark bit, but it had been fully overwritten :(, so on reading about previous ff versions, found the sqlite thingys, and they were relatively unscathed(partly written over, but saveable apparently TG), saved them to adiff drive, amongst other possibly good folders. Then looked up how to install them, and it said to close FF, and install to profile folder.
So i tried to close FF, and the original problem from a few days ago, where it asked me if 'i was sure i wanted to close this window as it has X tabs open', popped up again. This is where 'open blank page' selection was set, over 'open previous tabs'. Wanting to save that info on how to sort out these friggin files, I reset the Option to 'open previous tabs', and closed FF. After unsucessfully searching for the profile folder on my laptop, i opened FF intending to search online for where i could find said folder.
AND BANG, surprise surprise, the FF I had just closed with only tabs open about finding out what the heck to do, had disappeared, and instead my original saved tabs were up, and my bookmarks are there..... I am gobsmacked! what the heck just happened there???
I have made 3 back up in different folders now, of those friggin bookmarks. I am weary now tho of shutting it all down.... what if its back to the other pages I had with no bookmarks, tomorrow :(

  • Final Cut away from home

I've had one Mac or another at home since 1985, but never a notebook. I'm considering it now, but...
My work will be requiring me to be spending a lot of hotel time, and I'd really like to take this time to do some Final Cut work (Capturing mostly). I have an external firewire drive that I would bring with me, and I have the camcorder with a firewire port, but the Macbooks only have 1 Firewire400 port (even the MB Pro-which also has a fw800). I would rather capture to the external drive rather than start to fill up the main drive.
I'm thinking that a simple MacBook 1.83Ghz should have all the power I need for the relatively simple hotel work I wish to do.
How do people who do this all the time resolve this dilemma? I understand that there is such a thing as a Firewire hub, but I was unsure about a bottleneck of data.
    Thanks.

would plugging the camera's firewire into the external hard drive and the drive into the Firewire 400 port of a simple MacBook give me an option that would work?<<</div>
Yes, it could work that way. But be aware of a few things:
#1 Daisy-chaining the camera to the FW drive then to the Mac has been known to cause throughput errors which are the most common cause of dropped frames. This is ESPECIALLY true when using any Canon camcorder as a playback device.
#2 Apple doesn't officially support Final Cut Studio on a MacBook. They do however support it on the MacBook Pro. This article explains: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303782 That said, I've read reports from several people running FCP on a MacBook without many issues. Motion probably won't run properly though.
#3 The MacBook's graphic card uses the system RAM instead of it's own. If you run FCS or FCP on a MacBook, make sure you have enough RAM installed for the graphic card and the OS and any apps you'll need to be running.
