FinalCut Pro Slow down in Dual G5
Hi All,
First the specs:
Dual 2. Gh G5 with 5 gig of ram, and over 35 gig of spare drive space on the boot drive and 480 gig of drive space on the media drive. The software I am referring to are the latest FCStudio Package and the latest operating system.
The other system in place: First generation 17" MacBook Pro with 2 gig of ram, 28 gig of spare space on the boot drive and 526 gig spare space in media drive.
Neither system is connected to the other or internet.
So last week, rendering a 5 minute timeline that contained 100% titling effects from Live TYPE took approx 38 minutes long.
Yesterday, two timelines version of the same timelines, also 5 minutes in length each took almost 5 hours to render.
Very strange and sudden decrease in efficiency!
On a lark I put one of these same timelines on the Macbook Pro and it was all done in an hour.
Thanks for any help!!!
PS I have a similar comment in compressor because the slow down is in BOTH software packages.
Thanks for any help!
I'd use /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to see what's eating your resources...

MacBook Pro slowed down and now will not start up- flashing symbols on start screen.
I am increasingly worried about my MacBook Pro. It had been slow for a few weeks (I think it may be infected with some kind of malware), slowed down even more, and then a couple days ago when I turned it on it flashed a question mark folder, a prohibitory sign, and the apple logo on the startup screen and will not go past that. I followed the instructions on an apple help page for this issue- Nothing connected to it; I even removed the apple power cord. I tried a safe boot. I reset the NVRAM. It said to try starting up from an OS install disc, but my computer did not come with one. Here's the bit where I'm not sure if I made a stupid decision; another site said that the computer will download a recovery partition if there is no install disc, so I booted while holding down C even though I had no disc. I then read that holding option on startup will allow you to choose which disc to start from- I did that, and the only option displayed is a disc called Recovery (with a number after it that I think was 10.something, presumably referring to the OS version). Does this mean I have lost access to my computer's Macintosh HD? Have my files been lost? Unfortunately I do not have them backed up. Bad decision on my part.
Thanks for the quick response.
Command-option-r does take me to a screen with a spinning globe. Below the globe is a drop-down menu from which to select a wi-fi network. My network, however, is not listed. (I am now sitting right by the router, and my iPhone is on the wifi without any problem.) I go instead to manually type it in. I have triple checked the network name and password. I have used both the WEP key, which I have always used, and something that the sticker on the router refers to as the Mac ID, which is the WEP but with two zeros before it. Still the screen shakes as if I have entered the wrong password. I'm not sure what's going on now. -
Will moving from Tiger to Leopard speed up or slow down my Dual 1.25GHz G4?
I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.4.11. If I upgrade to 10.5.8 (which I believe to be the final version of Leopard) do people feel that overall my Mac will run (& feel as if it's running) more quickly or more slowly?
My experience with Macs (17 years worth) tells me that, other things being equal, a newer OS normally slows down a given set of hardware. Also, according to the graphic on this page, the guts of Leopard appear to be very similar to Tiger. However I'm hoping against the odds that in this case Leopard might give me a speed boost.
I can't think of any features that Leopard has that Tiger doesn't that I'd like to use or that I feel I'm missing out on. It's just a possible speed boost I'm after, along with compatibility with the odd utility etc. that requires 10.5 or higher.
My main application usage at the moment is as follows: Microsoft Entourage 2008 (version 12.2.7) for email (although this may change - see my Topic here), Safari 4.1.3 for web browsing (& also occasionally Firefox 3.6.12), iTunes 9.2, QuickTime Player 7.6.4, and also more demanding creative software - primarily Adobe's Creative Suite CS2 (although I'll probably be upgrading to CS3 in the next few months) and occasionally things like Final Cut Pro 5.0.4.
Many thanks.Leopard makes a few improvements in performance over Tiger especially in the graphics and video area. Otherwise you would not notice any changes in speed.

Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer
Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.
Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses. -

i purchased new mac book pro exactly one year back, upgraded to mountain lion few months back, since last few days it ahs slowed down so much that it is difficult to work on the same. last programme i used for cleaning was iBoostup. pl. help me in speeding the mac.
"Cleaning" apps are useless - there's no need to clean anything from your Mac (save for files that you no longer use). OS X does a very good job of maintenance.
See ds store's Why is my computer slow? Some excellent tips there.

Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.
Or you can simply do this:
Reinstall Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Please help: avast 6 pro slows down teststand
I installed avast 6 Pro recently and found it slowed down my teststand program. It used to take around 2.5 minutes to finish the whole test sequence. After the installation of this antivirus software, it took 4.5 minutes to finish. Has anyone used avast to protect his/her test stations and found the same slow-down issue? Have you had a solution to this? Do you have any settings to avast that can solve this issue? Please help. Thanks a lot.

Macbook Pro slowed down drastically all of a sudden, Beachball constantly there
So, this morning I left my house playing a game of League of Legends and as soon as i got to work and tried to use my mac it seemed to have slowed down by 90%. Beachball there constantly as soon as I click finder, nothing loads for about 15seconds, beach ball continues swirling. Applications load up then if I hoover over one, beach ball appears again for 10 seconds. I have done a SMC Reset and PRAM reset and nothing has worked, I have killed the com.apple.finder.plist and it didn't help. Even when i go to top left Apple sign and click it, beach ball appears and I have to wait about 15seconds before the drop down bar appears.
Ive had Maverick for a while and nothing happened, im on a 2.5GhZ i5 4GB Ram Macbook pro 13"
It had first started when I used mail and i couldn't write because the text in a new email would only appear about 5 seconds after i typed it.
Now for example if I try using Safari it gives the beach ball every time we change a website.
I can't use any other apps, for example league of legends will simply not load.If you don't already have a current backup of all data on the startup drive, back up immediately. Then see below.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

Does a MacBook Pro slow down after OS updates much like an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad?
I have A 4th generation iPod touch that I've had for almost two years, I also have an iPhone 4s and an iPad 2. When I bought the iPod touch it ran very quick and no sluggishness now with a few iOS updates over the months it's pretty slow and sluggish. So far both my iPhone 4s and my iPad 2 are running very good. What I've heard from friends who have iPhone's 3GS or an iPad 1 is that they're both sluggish after the iOS updates over the months and years. My question is, not owning a MacBook, does this computer slow down the same way the ios devices do after months and years of OS updates? My experience with my netbook is that it's become much more stable then when i first bought it with no sluggishness what so ever over the months of updates through Microsoft updates. Thanks.
Tommy VercettiAny computer can be slower when running a more demanding system than it was designed for. In my general experience, though, a Mac will continue running just fine on systems two major versions after what it shipped with. (For example, a machine that shipped with Leopard (10.5) will probably be able to run Lion (10.7) just fine, provided there's enough RAM and the hard drive isn't too full.) The only time I've had major issues with sluggishness was with an old PowerBook that shipped with Mac OS 9 and that I updated eventually to Mac OS X 10.3... a total of four versions later! I probably would have been better off leaving it at 10.2, but wanted some feature in 10.3 (I forget what at this point). And it's still in a cabinet in my office, in perfect working order.
Regarding iOS, my first-generation iPod Touch, updated to the latest system it can support, still works just fine. Of course, it feels more sluggish when I do something with it because I've gotten used to expecting more from my iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
So, no, a Mac should not get sluggish over time, as long as you don't try to push it beyond it's capabilities. The only Mac I have ever felt it necessary to replace before about 5-6 years of age was the one I dropped on the floor.
Edit: Also, your comparison with Windows downloading updates is not quite the same thing as what I've said above. Upgrading a Mac from 10.6 to 10.7 is like upgrading a Windows machine from Windows Vista to Windows 7. The free incremental updates (10.7.1, 10.7.2, etc), which are more similar to automatic Windows updates, definitely should not cause sluggishness. -
Mac pro slows down after RAM uppgrade ASP (its my workstation)
I have an mac pro (first 8core released back in 2007) and i uppgraded it from 4 to 8 gig of ram. After the upgrade it became slower so I installed snow leopard since it should handle ram and multicores better but that didnt help. Its like it go from sleepy to extreme slow. Like an photoshop image that should take 12 seconds to load took 10min!! So its somethin fishy.

Does 2007 have 4 memory chips as ideal as 2006 had? Can the macstore give me bad compatible rams (i asked for orginal mac ram memmorys). If this could make it go slow. Mabe snow leapord helped out to slow it down but I worked one and half day before I uppgraded to snow leopard and it was already slow.
This is on my worskstation so its Asp. Is there any heros here?
(ok I will test to take out the ram and se if everything goes back to normal but still I would like to get it to work)
Cheers
Joel"need" is something that is "recommended" for symmetrical memory performance.
It shouldn't run any different really.
I always recommend this:
try with just the new RAM
put highest density in A1:A2
It is symmetrical, sort of, as 4x1GB in slots 1:2 on both Risers.
My take: doesn't play nice or get along with original 4GB; marginal; and ideal is 4 x 2GB; second best 8 x 1GB. 6 DIMMs is the worst configuration AFTER not having enough.
I'd wipe out your swap files; clone your drive - if you haven't done so in six months you should, also if moving to a new OS, DEFINITELY either
Clean install on new/2nd drive (great excuse for new fast drive);
Clone and then upgrade (worst scenerio)
Clean install followed by running Migration Assistant for everything except applications.
Don't want to have issues with new OS, new drivers, AND new hardware (even RAM) and a new OS isn't going to fix a problem, just add new ones. And TEST a new OS before you commit yourself (reason for backups and clones and the like).
Also, run Disk Warrior on fresh clone before you use it.
What you do, why, you probably did need more RAM, 4GB is pretty basic and not even enough for pro apps like graphic editing.
Watch RAM temps and run AHT Extended Loop briefly.
I'd watch for bad blocks and disk sectors; re-initialize drives, even install some new ones: WD 10K V-Raptor for system and another for scratch; Samsung 1TB F3 for data.... something like that if it has been 2+ yrs. -
Installed Yosemite on my macbook pro slow down the RAM
Hi Everyone
few Days ago I Just Installed new Operating System from App Store, Unfortunately My laptop stop working while typing in Word file. After 24 hr of installation my mac book worked perfectly until there was two application of iphoto and iMovine that asked me for update, which I did.
but since then I couldn't access my file or do anything in normal running. the good thing is that I managed to back up all my file through the safe mode.
So far what I did: I deleted All my catch file all the applications that I believed that is taking so much memory, ( Iphoto and Imovie), did the repair permission,
and other suggestion like download application like CleanMyMac 2 to delete all unnecessary file
As I read from other ppl that experienced this I download Etrechck to show you the details of my system configuration:
Could someone tell me what should I do.. I was thinking of replacing my cable to my hard disk ... that might be cause of slow running or should I re-install again ..! any advice will be appreciated

Mac Pro slow down after Yosemite 10.10.2 upgrade
Upgraded in January.
I get the spinning color wheel all the time. Programs crash.
I've run adware medic a few times, and etrecheck.
First run through, adware found Genio.
Since then, it hasn't. Etrecheck still says it sees it, but Adware doesn't. Still no good.
I reset SMS and PRAM.
This machine is slow. Previous to the upgrade, this machine was very fast!

Brand new Mac Pro slowing down
I have a brand new mac-pro (8 core 2.8ghz,6gb 1x350/2x500gbhd)10.5.5.I have only put about 60gb on start up disk and 200gb on my HD 1.I already get the spinning ball when i open up some app's and to send a email (say 10 words nothing else)takes 10-15 secs to send,my broadband is up to 10mb.This is connected cable no wifi.I also have to quit force programs (they just freeze)and then it doesn;t quit force, can't do nothing.I HAXE ONLY USED THIS 4 TIMES.
The hatter,
Thank you for the history of the posts here.
I might add, Dano, your experience is actually quite unusual. In fact your mileage can be much worse on a PC. Viruses can wipe out ALL your data in an instant on a PC, while not on a Mac. Mac users at worse if there is something unstable usually only lose data if there is some hardware or software issue. So backing up your data is a prerequisite for owning any kind of computer.
Your experience with numerous spinning beachballs usually is indicative of faulty RAM, an overfull hard drive (which you obviously don't have), a directory issue* (which may happen if you don't know how to shut down your machine, or are using the wrong utilities to diagnose your machine), or some other hardware problem that can be sometimes diagnosed via the hardware test discs that came with your machine as indicated here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
That lack of an error does not mean your RAM is healthy, it merely means the error is undetectable.
Secondly, if your version of Protools is too old, it will not run on a Mac Pro natively, so you have to make sure you are using the latest Protools. If your plugins are too old the same issue.
Third, if your software won't download fully, it usually is an indication that either your network is not setup properly, or your network preferences in your Mac is not setup properly. Some have found that by increasing the MTU they can make the networking work more smoothly. Some have found that by using an Open DNS they have less issues, as described on http://www.opendns.org/
So before you blame stuff on Apple lets get to the bottom of what's wrong with your machine.

Transparency and window managers
I'm trying to figure out how a window manager handles transparency in it's clients, and if it's done through Xlib or something similar. If anyone here has some idea how this works, any little explanation or a pointer to a guide would be much apprecia
