Finally, A complete PSU Guide!

Welcome Boys and girls. Throughout all my pleasureable experiance on this wonderful forum I have come accross quite a few knowledgable members who have gotten the wrong conclusion on how Power Supplys work. I have taken it apon myself to figure these things out and have found a very non speculative article that basically explains, thoroughly, how PSU's work. I have also got this information validated by an Electrical Engineer.
I will explain it to you, the way he explained it to me.
To start out, forget all the termonology or idea's you once thought about a powersupply. From now on you will never look for amount of wattage when determining your PSU. Wattage means jack.
Lets play pretend.
Lets imagine we have a large complex, in this complex is a suffistocated installment of pipes and water ways.
Amps is how much water pressure is in the pipes.
Volts is how big the pipe is.
Generally you will see less water pressure (amps) in a larger pipe (Volts)
(Defination of PSI) PSI = 1 pound per square inch = 6 894.75729 Pascals
Lets say this building has 100 psi in water pressure.
This building also has 50 water faucets.
For the time being we turn on 1 of those faucets. Does our water pressure drop?
Yes it does, but not by much.
Lets say we turn on 25 of those faucets. Our water pressure is diminished extensively and causes weird fluctuation in our pipes and water travels much slower.
Example, if one of those faucets are open water gets pushed out at a strong steady rate right?
However, if all of the faucets are on then water moves out much slower like a smooth stream or a small drizzle, as apposed to a strong spout.
Now, our building is only allowed 100psi of water pressure. It does not matter whether or not we have 25 faucets open, 10 faucets open or all 50. We will only ever get 100psi and no more.
Do we all understand?
The same thing can be applied to a rail on a powersupply. It works EXACTLY the same way.
Now I am going to explain to you why Wattage is a waste of time in measuring.
Instead of making a decision based on our Wattage we should be making decisions based on the amount of Water pressure in our pipelines! What was that? Did I loose you?
Let me re-illistrate. Again pretend a pipleine is a Railing, like a 12v Railing. Now pretend that the Amps are the amount of water pressure those lines have.
In the water world, the multiplying your water pressure times the size of your pipe will give you an idea of how much water travels a second. Wattage is mearly a measurement tool and really does not ease our decision making.
Let me re-illistrate again
(Pipe Size)*(Water Pressure) = (Water traveling per second in square feet)
(Voltage)*(amps) = Wattage.
Since now days components mainly run on 3.3v rail, 5v rail, and 12v railings we only need to worry about the amount of amps that each of these lines get allocated. We also really only need to worry about the positive railings as the negative railings usually will not apply to the average person.
Here are a few Examples.
Premeir 300w
3.3v * 15a = 49.5 WATTS
5v   *  29a = 145 WATTS
12v * 11.5a = 138 WATTS
TOTAL WATTS = (49.5 + 145 + 138) = 332.5
In this case the manufacturer rounded down and labled it a 300w. For that I praise Premeir.
CompUSA 250w
3.3v * 14a = 46.2 WATTS
5v * 15a = 75 WATTS
12v *  10a = 120 WATTS
TOTAL WATTS = (46.2 + 75 + 120) = 241.2
In this case the manufacturer decided to round up. Close enough I suppose...
The truth is many people are saying that an athlon 64 CPU will not post on anything less then 30A. That is very wrong and is a fallcy that people need not beleive. Others have said 18A is the extreme bare minimum however in many cases this also is not true.
You cannot simply say one device sucks all the amps out of a single line, other wise where would all your fans and other components draw power from? Since most of the stuff in your system all use the 12v rail we will analyze how much each device draws on that line. How much amps are needed for each specific device.
To simply post a motherboard, cpu, and Gcard your system doesnt NEED 30a // on a 12v.
My test lab consists of 5 of those CompUSA PSU's. We use those to pre-post customers hardware before they leave the store to ensure our hardware is good. 95% of all our sales are AMD, and at least 85% of those are Athlon 64's. I have yet to have any type of PSU problem. Even with a meir 10a to a 12v line.
In truth most athlon 64's range anywhere from a 5amps (Sempron 3100 not 64bit) to a 9amps draw (FX-55).
Thats right the FX-55 draws a meir 9a. Now I have never posted a FX-55( I would probably drool over it). No customers has forked out the cash for one of these yet. However We have sold a few 4000+, and all three of those worked fine on our 10a line.
Now remember this is simply a post. Meaning, only ram, CPU, and Gcard are included.
So lets add it all together.
Athlon 64 12v Requirements = 5a - 9a
Average Gcard Low to high .3a - 3.25a
Average MB draw              .3a
So to simply post a motherboard on the low end very minor 6 amps will do the job. On the flip side you may still need 13a. However that is still no where near our 18a assumptions. Now that is a simple post. The 4000+ cpu's I posted those on K8T Neo's using only TNT 64 Graphic cards which have a very low power consumption. The TNT 64 is our cheap test card, which is why we use them for testing!
So if your just doing testing for multiple posts on many different machines any 12a or higher amperage will be sufficient. From a troubleshooting aspect you may not necessarily need the heftiest PSU. From a home user workstation or system then I would invest in something above par for your system.
There is no point in investing hundreds of dollars to simply post boards. However when it comes to your home system or workstation your thought process should not be on saving money, but on investing it. Investing it in the reliability sense making sure your components are well handled.
You may ask why some of these low Amp PSU's have so many problems still, even with higher Amps?
Well there is still something that needs to be discussed when it comes to cheap power supplys. Also, simply because a power supply is expensive it does not mean it is not cheap!
Back to the ATX standards, any railing can go up or down at .5volts.
Again, ATX standards require PSU manufacturers to make sure their lines do not breach a .5 threshold. In some cases on cheaper PSU's I have seen the line be at the bear minimum of 11.5v or jump up to 12.5. Both cases are bad news.
That there, I beleive is inhirant from cheap PSU's. Lower voltage ,or to high, ends up bringing inconsistancy in the lines and an instable system. The system is getting to much power, or not enough.
That is why my 300w premeir PSU will post my K8T Neo board however my cheap 420w Enlight will not.
Now what about the average user? Well everyone is so different how much amperage do you need? And what about the other 3.3v railing and 5v railing?
It all depends on how many toys you have under that sweet case of yours!
Below is a spreadsheet of a very above average system. Comparing to yours I doubt you will be draining as much power as this!
Even with all of that he still barely breaches 18a on his 12v!
Now I would recomend for the average user to have at least 18a on their 12v railing. That is for 1 or 2 optical drives, 1 or 2 Harddrives, and a average graphics card on a 64bit system. For the enthuesiasts, better get 25a+. 30a is definately sufficient enough for any one whos not running 8 SCSI 320 15k rpm harddrives with a 6800 U, and a Athlon FX-55! Even with all that you wouldnt need much more Amps on a 12v railing.
Does that mean that if your system is unstable and you have less then 18a to rush out and spend MORE money on a new PSU? Absolutely not, but it is questionable. Your amperage level in comparison to the type of hardware you have needs to always be brough into questoin, or check your 12v railing and make sure its sitting at a consistant tolerable range at somewhere near, 12v. Anything above or below .5v I would start to worry. Most AMI bios's will show you your railings voltage in PC health section under Vcore.
On a side note, some PSU manufacturers have decided to put double 12v railings in an attempt to increase stability. I have yet to see stability improvments from these, in fact I have seen more problems with these PSU's. Often times the amps on them were much lower as well. However try it out at your own risk!
For more information I highly, HIGHLY, HIGHLY, recomend this article

I did not make any refference to the 5v rail as simply put we do not use it as much as past systems. Nor did I state they did not use any. Please do not read stuff into what I said that was never intended.
All we have are words:
Quote from: Tiresmoke
Newer cards like the X800 and the 6800 series eat amps for a snack and they snack 24/7. in fact next to the CPU they take the most juice to operate. Boys and girls they use 12v period
As I demonstrated, the demand on the 5v rail has not significantly lessened in the last two video card generations.  The point I am trying to make is that demand on the 12v rail is not the be all and end all - just take a look at the loading table for efficiency measurements on the ATX spec.  In your effort to simplify a complex subject, you are (IMO) misleading those who aren't as educated on the subject.
Quote
Also note that I am not saying at any point that a system with just an A64 and say an X800 can't operate on 20a on that rail. I am saying that the greater the needs on that rail the heavier the PSU you will need. Count in Heat, efficiency and other factors and you may want to leave some overhead but I am not saying that 20a is insufficiant. So stop putting words in my mouth.
Huh?  Nobody mentioned the 20 amps figure before you did.   Similarly, the first mention of a X800 Pro in this thread is in your post.

  • Final print completely different to layout in LR 5.3

    Hi,
    I use a Macintosh with mountain lion 10.8.5.
    Until I started changing what layout I wanted the final print from my epson 7900 was ok. I had it as a customised A2 on A1 layout.
    When I changed it to an A2 layout from the dropdown menu the final print was 609mm square and the image itself was near the left hand border in the middle and occupied only 25% of teh total area of teh paper. I tried different print sizes but they all came out the same.
    I tried what an other forumite did and updated the firmware for the printer but thus made no difference.
    When I opened an LR4.4 application that I still had I was able to print it on the custom setting for 609x 420mm without a problem.
    Ant suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Hardy

    There are two factors that can contribute to the coordinates being displaced or not being applied. I'm assuming here that you are using gps4cam to generate a tracklog and applying the tracklog to the images.
    1. The camera time must be in exact sync with the phone time, including time zones. If you forgot to adjust for daylight savings time, or if the clock on the EOS-M got reset, that could be one source of this issue.
    2. When using GPS witha smart phone, sometimes wifi hotspots are used for "greater accuracy" but occasionally a hotspot may be associated with an incorrect location.
    Based on your details above, and the fact that we just changed clocks last month, I'm betting on #1.
    For what it's worth, I use my EOS-M with an Eye-Fi SD card and that will allow me to record GPS data directly into XMP data without the use of a separate tracker app. It does wear down the battery faster, though.

  • Looking for the complete guide to making iChat work

    Has anyone put together something akin to The Complete Troubleshooting Guide to Making iChat Work ?
    Even just a Top Ten best suggestions would be handy.
    Sometimes Screen Share and video works great. But with some people, it doesn't. I'd love to know how to troubleshoot the problem when it occurs.
    For me, I finally just set my router to DMZ. From what I understand, this opens up every port in the known universe on my end. I realize that this is akin to leaving the front door unlocked, but I got so fed up with not being able to use iChat.
    Given that DMZ is turned on, does that guarantee that the issue is never on my end? Or are there still things that can make iChat video/audio/ Screen Share not work from my end. Or can I assume that the issue is always on the other side.
    Last question: where do I find the iChat log? I did searches through the Help menu, but couldn't find out where that resides, and how to get at it for helping report problems.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi braintoniq,
    Ralph Johns (one of the iChat gurus here) has a website devoted to iChat and getting it to work:

    I'm not sure if he's using Leopard yet, but I would imagine many/most of the tips will still apply.

  • Complete flex 3 to 4 migration guide?

    I have a moderately large AIR project developed in flex 3. I tried to migrate to flash builder 4 (import the project folder) and got tons of errors. Besides, it seems fb4 doesn't recognize my project is an AIR project. I wonder if the flex team can provide a complete migration guide to make the migration easier. Thanks.

    Simply importing an air project into FB4 beta2 shouldn't cause to many issues it should still bring it in as an mx WindowedApplication, the last air project I imported had over 70,000 lines of code and some 2,500 files and the only problem was an extended  graphics component.
    Don't move the project folder into your workspace it needs to be imported from its original FB3 workspace, unlike FB3 when you import a project it doesn't move the project into your current workspace it just updates the settings of the project folder so its an idea to back things up before importing.

  • Integrating Final Cut Server 1.5 with Active Directory

    Following the directions in the Final Cut Server Setup Guide and I am running into errors. Fun with Final Cut Server. Fun with Kerberos.
    Final Cut Server v.1.5 is running on an Intel Xserve running 10.5.6 Server, joined to AD. Active Directory is running on a Windows Server 2008 setup.
    I dropped the ini files on the domain controllers, as directed by Apple KB (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3688) and I ran the commands directed in the setup guide.
    The adprincadd command should be run literally, of course, but there's a mistake straight-away when it should read "./adprincadd.pl", the ".pl" is missing. Also it says "fcsvr/fqdn of fcsvr", so naturally I replaced the fqdn, but the "fcsvr" prefixed threw me off. It gave me errors until I opened Kerberos.app and notcied that the kerb ticket was in ldap/, then the command worked for me. At least no errors, until I checked the ticket and it said I had no permissions and that the keytab entry was invalid. Wheeee.
    1. First I tried:
    (some info redacted)
    node09:sbin root# ./adprincadd.pl -dc dc01.example.com. fcs.example.com.
    Getting kerberos principal for computer account
    Kerberos principal is ---
    Getting computer id...---
    Getting AD Domain...---
    Base DN is dc=example,dc=com
    getting kerb ticket using [email protected] got ticket
    SASL-bind to dc01.example.com. successful
    Computer record is at CN=---,CN=Computers,DC=example,DC=com

    at ./adprincadd.pl line 165
    2. Then I noticed the /ldap in Kerberos.app and changed the adprinadd command:
    Everything ran well, with no errors...
    Finding kvno...2
    Reading /etc/krb5.keytab...done.
    Creating new keytab file...done.
    Writing out temporary keytab...done.
    Making backup of old keytab and moving new keytab into place...done.
    Operation Completed. You can verify with "kinit <ad user>; kvno -k /etc/krb5.keytab ldap/---.example.com"
    3. Verifying with kinit gave me the keytab errors:
    kinit matx; kvno -k /etc/krb5.keytab ldap/fcs.example.com
    Please enter the password for [email protected]:
    ldap/[email protected]: kvno = 2, keytab entry invalid

    Thoughts?

    Hello, I'm having issues with the client login after AD integration. I followed the steps from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3818 and the Terminal output reported a success.
    I'm able to add AD groups in Final Cut Server Group Permissions. However, when I try logging in on the FCServer client using credentials associated with AD group I've added, I'm getting an error message from the client stating:
    "Please re-enter the username and password or contact the server administrator. Please note that the username and password are case-sensitive."
    The FQDN is correct in the Server field of the client.
    I'm able to log into the client using locally created user accounts that I've created on the server so I know the client is communicating correctly.
    The only thing I can find in the Console for the client machine is this:
    11/25/09 10:50:12 AM /Users/*/Desktop/Final Cut Server.app/Contents/MacOS/Final Cut Server[1773] Warning: accessing obsolete X509Anchors.
    In the server Console, this is a suspect message: /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Server/Final Cut Server.bundle/Contents/MacOS/fcsvr_stored[77891] pps proxy error: dsDoDirNodeAuth = -14091
    Not finding much info out there regarding this. Any guidance is appreciated.

  • A link to download a .pdf complete manual for illustrator cc

    Hello,
    Does anyone know where i can d/load a complete manual or user guide for Adobe Illustrator CC. I have found overviews in pdf form but the only complete help guide i can find is online @ Adobe but not downloadable.
    thanks for any help

    Thanks John, I gave you the big 10 points... now you can get that condo .
    Thanks OldBob, it would be nice if all Adobe was going to offer was the goober-smoochin 'online help' that they could at least set it up like the old win32-help (I think) that would expand and you could print it out.
    I finally broke down early this morning and expanded some of the individual online help files, copied them into word and then saved them as .pdf's. AFAIK, IIRC, a real PITA.

  • Restoring "Macintosh HD" GUID

    I just installed Windows 7 via Boot Camp on my Mac Pro on a second hard drive. Everything worked fine and I could boot into either OS fine UNTIL I decided to hide the Mac drive from Windows by removing it's drive designation. Now the computer doesn't see OSX drive at all, even after giving its drive letter back. I can only boot into Windows now. I found this article on Apple's help page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3200
    Does anyone know how to do the resolution part?
    "If the drive designation letter has already been altered or removed, third-party utilities may allow the recovery of the Mac OS X partition by restoring its GUID. The GUID is: 48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC"
    What third-party utilities could fix this? I've searched everywhere but can't find a sure solution.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    My brother fixed it...
    Before you do anything else, you should try to back up your data disk if there's anything important. You may need to take it out of the computer and put it an external housing. If nothing else, you should be able to grab important files from the Windows side.
    Anyhow, here's how we fixed it:
    From Windows, go to Start/Run... (or Windows-R {Command-R}) and run DISKPART
    This is the Microsoft disk partition utility.
    Type "list disk" to show your disks:
    <pre style="background-color: #eee">
    DISKPART> list disk
    Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
    ----=--- ----=----=--- ----=-- ----=-- --- ---
    Disk 0 Online 233 GB 0 B
    Disk 1 Online 596 GB 127 MB *
    Disk 2 Online 931 GB 128 MB
    </pre>
    The GPT volume is probably your Mac disk; let's look at it:
    <pre style="background-color: #eee">
    DISKPART> select disk 1
    Disk 1 is now the selected disk.
    DISKPART> list part

    Partition 2 is now the selected partition.

    OK, we know we have the right partition, but the type isn't right (that ID is for a "Basic Data Partition"). DISKPART has the SETID command, but it won't work, so we'll use GPT FDISK for Windows. Get it at:
    [http://sf.net/projects/gptfdisk>
    extract and run as administrator (gdisk.exe)
    <pre style="background-color: #eee">
    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.6.5
    Most versions of Windows cannot boot from a GPT disk, and most varieties
    prior to Vista cannot read GPT disks. Therefore, you should exit now
    unless you understand the implications of converting MBR to GPT, editing
    an existing GPT disk, or creating a new GPT disk layout!
    Are you SURE you want to continue? (Y/N): y
    Type device filename, or press <Enter> to exit: 1:
    Partition table scan:
    MBR: protective
    BSD: not present
    APM: not present
    GPT: present
    Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.
    </pre>
    Print the partition table to make sure we're in the right place:
    <pre style="background-color: #eee">
    Command (? for help): p
    Disk 1:: 1250263728 sectors, 596.2 GiB
    Logical sector size: 512 bytes
    Disk identifier (GUID): 00001494-45A0-0000-923B-0000AC4A0000
    Partition table holds up to 128 entries
    First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 1250263694
    Total free space is 262157 sectors (128.0 MiB)
    Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
    1 40 409639 200.0 MiB EF00 EFI system partition
    2 409640 1250001543 595.9 GiB 0700 Customer
    </pre>
    And get detailed information:
    <pre style="background-color: #eee">
    Command (? for help): i
    Partition number (1-2): 2
    Partition GUID code: EBD0A0A2-B9E5-4433-87C0-68B6B72699C7 (Linux/Windows data)
    Partition unique GUID: 000043C0-3EEC-0000-B927-000090380000
    First sector: 409640 (at 200.0 MiB)
    Last sector: 1250001543 (at 596.0 GiB)
    Partition size: 1249591904 sectors (595.9 GiB)
    Attribute flags: 0000000000000000
    Partition name: Customer
    </pre>
    OK, let's change the GUID code:
    <pre style="background-color: #eee">
    Command (? for help): t (change partition code)
    Partition number (1-2): 2
    Current type is 'Linux/Windows data'
    Hex code (L to show codes, 0 to enter raw code, Enter = 0700): af00
    Changed type of partition to 'Apple HFS/HFS+'
    </pre>
    Now verify that it is the right ID (the same one as in the article):
    <pre style="background-color: #eee">
    Command (? for help): i
    Partition number (1-2): 2
    Partition GUID code: 48465300-0000-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC (Apple HFS/HFS+)
    Partition unique GUID: 000043C0-3EEC-0000-B927-000090380000
    First sector: 409640 (at 200.0 MiB)
    Last sector: 1250001543 (at 596.0 GiB)
    Partition size: 1249591904 sectors (595.9 GiB)
    Attribute flags: 0000000000000000
    Partition name: Customer
    </pre>
    Now the scary part - overwriting the partition map.
    <pre style="background-color: #eee">
    Command (? for help): w
    Final checks complete. About to write GPT data. THIS WILL OVERWRITE EXISTING
    PARTITIONS!!
    Do you want to proceed, possibly destroying your data? (Y/N): y
    </pre>
    Now reboot to get back to your Mac.
