Yeah, I have a Macbook and have serious wifi problems. I just got mine a couple weeks ago, and it has had problems since day one. Typically, if I can connect to a wireless network I cannot get an IP through DHCP. If I switch the
Airport card on and off repeatedly in System Preferences, I may eventually get an IP address after an unknown period of time - sometimes a couple of minutes, sometimes half an hour, sometimes more. At school in the library, instead of connecting but not being able to get an IP, Airport doesn't connect at all. After around 100 or so (yes, I'm not kidding) attempts at connecting to the wifi at school I am able to connect to the wireless network. I used my $700 Acer laptop in all of those places without a problem; I connected every time.
At first I thought that my Macbook had a malfunctioning wifi card and that I would need a replacement. But now that I'm seeing a lot of other people having problems, I'm not confident that a new Airport card would solve anything.

Using Final Cut Express for video editing without attaching external device

Hello,
I am a newbie to Final Cut Express as well as Mac's in general. I am wanting to use Final Cut Express for video editing of files, but without an attached camera. Is there any way to have Final Cut Express startup without having it prompt for an external A/V device? I just want to do some basic editing and use the chroma key feature. Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, I've tried that and I get into an issue that was addressed in this posting: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=836595&tstart=120 where FCE will show the splash screen and then the program doesn't start. I then have to delete FCE preferences and then I will get the Easy Setup dialog box prompt me again for choosing the external device.
I am looking for a way to use FCE for video editing of files that I already have on my computer that I created using iClone software and is in .avi, or .mp4 format. I get FCE to work one time without the external device actually being attached, but then when restarting the program I get the dialog box asking for the external device and if it's not there, the program just closes, and to get it to work again, I have to delete the preference files and go through the process all over again which is time consuming especially when this is at work. If FCE is not the right program, can anyone suggest a good video editing program that doesn't require an external device and is as good or better than FCE?

Fix for iPhoto lost thumbnails on an external drive

I've had a few times when iPhoto seems to have lost all my thumbnails and pictures. I finally figured out what caused it and how to solve it. I thought others might be interested.
The problem occurs because of 2 things:
1. I store my iPhoto Library on an external drive.
2. While running iPhoto, the external drive becomes disconnected by mistake (usually because I kick the power cord)
I found that the problem is that iPhoto still tries to write the library files to the same location as it used to be. In order to fix the problem, you just need to remove the files that were created accidently. Here are the steps I used for iPhoto '06 and Max OS X 10.3.9 on an eMac. I'm guessing they'll work with other versions, but have not tested them.
0. Quit iPhoto. Make sure you have a current back-up of all your files (don't you always
1. Write down the name of the drive where you store your iPhoto library on the external drive:
I'll use <drive> in the remainder of this description. Replace that text with the name you just wrote down.
2. Open the "Terminal" inside "Applications/Utilities/"
3. Type "cd /Volumes". This is where Mac connects external drives to your UNIX filesystem. "cd" means "change directory" to the "/Volumes" drive.
4. Type "ls". You should see the name of your drive there. "ls" means "list" the contents.
5. Eject the <drive> from you Mac via the Trash Can and turn it off as normal.
6. Type "ls". Normally your drive should disappear from this listing. However, you'll notice that the drive still appears there. The problem is that there are really 2 directories there, one gets over-written when you attach an external drive. But having 2 causes lots of problems.
7. With the drive off, you want to move the 2nd directory out of the way. To do this, you will need to become a root user for a moment. This is done with the "sudo" which means "switch user and do something then switch back". The first time you use it in a terminal you will be required to type the administrator password. It's a very powerful command, but keeps you from getting into the wrong mode forever.
8. Type "sudo mv '<drive>' '<drive>.wrong'". This switches users, "moves" the bad directory to another directory name (ie. rename for UNIX). Make sure to use the single quote (') in case the name of your drive has spaces in it.
This doesn't remove the bad files, just moves them out of the way. That way if this doesn't work, you can just move it back with the reverse command "sudo mv '<drive>.wrong' '<drive>'".
9. Now turn your drive back on.
10. Type "ls". Your <drive> should now re-appear in this listing.
11. Restart iPhoto. It may ask you to locate the Library again.
Please note that these instructions are only provided to help other users running into the same problem. Also, I am not responsible for any lost data by following these instructions.

It would be much easier if you make frequent backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and when you have a disconnect like you did, just replace the damaged file with the backup version. It is important to have a "recent" backup so you can get back where you were. So I've created an Automator application that will copy the file to the Pictures folder, label it orange, any time you click on it. So you can backup after any import, or work on a book, slideshow,etc. You don't need to close iPhoto to do it. Just don't be writing the the database file. TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

A FIX for iPhoto 11 opening older libraries

Had the same problem everyone else has had. Then I was thunk in the forehead by an obvious trick. I use iPhoto Library manager. I opened IPLM and and clicked on the icon for creating a NEW LIBRARY (upper left corner of IPLM screen). I named it TestLibrary. I then launched this new file from within IPLM -- and iPhoto 11 (v 9.1) opened! That is, the app opened with a new library that contained no pictures. I dragged a couple of test jpg's into the library. Then I quit and reopened TestLibrary several times, to make sure I wasn't counting my chickens too soon. TestLibrary opened fine each time. I then quit IPLM and went directly to my picture libraries in the Pictures folder and launched them from the finder. EACH AND EVERYONE OPENED! They not only opened but iPhoto 11 performed the "update" function very quickly, even on the larger libraries. Again, I quit and reopened the files several times to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
I suspect the IPLM manager may be partially culpable. I note that many people who posted this problem also use IPLM.
FYI: I figured out this fix while standing here at a counter in my local Apple Store (Leawood, KS). The floor sales rep who tried to help me earlier -- a cute and very friendly blonde with a killer smile -- had no idea about the iPhoto problem. But she was very kind and took my emil address and set me up for a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow. I'm looking all over the store now for her. nowto share my success -- but she has wandered off. Rats. She really is cute; I'm single. Which is none of your business. Where was I? Oh yeah. Before Ms. Cute saleswoman wandered off and aftyr my heart rate returned to normal, I decided to experiment a little more. That's when I came up with the idea of using IPLM to create a blank new file. Getting ready to leave now. ..... NEW UPDATE: I finally spotted the very nice (and very cute) Apple saleswoman who had been helping me. Some other customer was flirting with her, pretending that he didn't know a thing about his new laptop. Rightttttt... I interrupted and asked her for a dance. Just kidding. I told her I had fixed my iPhoto libraries. She smiled, nodded, said "GREAT!" I melted. I offered to hang around a few minutes in case she wanted to come over and see how I fixed iPhoto. While waiting for her I thought I should type this and post it on the Forum. The very nice (and BEYOND cute) saleswoman still hasn't stopped by yet. I will wait a few more minutes. I'm in love. But the store is very busy. I will wait a few more minutes. I am realllly in love. Did I mention she was cute and very polite? Gotta go now. Update 10/24: I released a quick 3.5.8 update yesterday, which doesn’t yet provide full iPhoto ‘11 compatibility, but does provide a couple improvements for iPhoto ‘11 users, including a fix for those experiencing the issue of being unable to reopen a library after upgrading it to the new iPhoto version. If you have such a library, simply open the library up via iPLM, and you should be prompted by iPhoto to upgrade the library again. Once it’s complete, you should then be able to close and reopen the library normally.

Using an iMac and mac air together for iPhoto editing and organisation

I want my iMac and macair to be synced for iPhoto purposes.
I followed this thread and have saved my iPhoto library from the iMac to an external drive.
I assume I can plug the drive into the macair and make changes. Or is it intended that I copy the drive to the macair?
I am having difficulty understanding how the sync of changes on the macair will be reflected on the iMac?

One question, how does this affect syncing to iTunes? Will it recognise the iPhoto drive on both computers (depending which one has the drive at that time) if I sync photo albums to my iPhone and iPad?
iTunes will always sync with the last iPhoto library that has been used on the computer. If you make sure, that the drive has been connected, before you launch iTunes, it will work, like Old Toad said.
Also, if I do it this way doesn't it become vulnerable due to not being connected at all times to time machine?
if you use the drive with the library the mainly on your iMac, you could exclude it from the TimeMachine backup of your Laptop. Keep it connected to the iMac, when you are not using it on the LapTop.
What would be the process if I only wanted to do this periodically and wanted to keep the main library on the iMac. Could I work on the drive on the macair and then save it back to the iMac? How do I do that without duplicating the files? If I just select copy and paste, will it only overwrite the changed files?
You would have to copy the entire library back and forth again and again, or use iPhoto Library Manager, to merge the changes into the library on the iMac. It would not be an easy workflow.

Is there a fix for iphoto 11 book crashes

I made the HUGE mistake of upgrading to iLife 11 and now iPhoto refuses to allow me to use the book makeing feature. The second I attempt to make a book from an exsisting album or edit books from a current project, it crashes. I have done all the usual things. Yes, ALL OF THEM. Yes, that too. Since I can't seem to uninstall the whole thing.
I'm running Mac OS 10.6.8 and there is no /var/db/receipts folder where I can delete the package contents. If any one knows where to locate this, I would appreciate the heads up.
Considering the sheer lack of customer accountability that Apple is famous for I'm not expecting to get anything out of this post from an actual Apple developer. That would be lottery ticket kind of maddness, no. I'm holy hoping some smart super-user will take pity on this advance/intermediate Mac-girl and help me either thwart my iPhoto issues or help me rid my system of this piece of S*&^t.

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.

Finally a Fix For the 1450 Error !!!

Well I believe I may have found the solution to the -1450 error at least for my situation.
While pouring over settings I noticed ITUNES runs in a protected memory space. Well this along with the symptoms displayed (being unable to update the library file if a large number or files are changed/edited added etc.) led me to examine my virtual memory settings under the Windows/control panel/performance/advanced/Memory usage tab and I noticed that for some reason memory usage was selected as optimized for "System cache" VS "programs". I changed this to programs and also while in the same area disabled the EP "execution prevention" feature of the INTEL processor.
I can now import change/files listen to music etc. without this -1450 error presenting itself.
I'm not sure which of the two steps solved the problem but I suspect the Memory optimization being set for "system cache" was the problem.
While I never had any problems running other apps.(I do have a lot of memory)I think ITUNES was having a problem with this setting when writing to and from temp files and the ITUNES.ITL file.
I have no idea how or when or why this setting was as it was as all my other PC's are set for program performance optimization.
Hope some one finds this helpful.
Now if I could figure out why I get the "insufficient privilages message" everytime I try to set ITUNES as default Audio player I would be a happy man..

Important Note: This fix is only for people whose device manager is blank. Also, Windows explorer (my computer) must recognize you iPod, but iTunes does not.
Alas, my friends, it is done. No thanks to Apple for solving this problem. After a full month of tring to fix this problem, I can now trace it back to a dangerous spyware program: Apropos
I had no clue it was on my computer, and it is therefore the reason that my iTunes was working perfectly until one fateful day. Almost no spyware programs such as Search and Destory can detect it, and it does more than hide ur device manager. It slows down your computer greatly, and often disables LAN.

Fix for iPhoto after upgrading to Yosemite

After upgrading to Yosemite I was unable to open iPhoto. I moved it to Trash (do NOT empty trash after moving it here!!!) - then go to App Store and download iPhoto. You'll want to make sure you then go to your Finder and click on the iPhoto download app in order to complete the download. When you open iPhoto it may say you need to upgrade - go ahead and do so then your photos will appear again with a new icon in your dock (remove the old one since it won't work now - the new icon will look different if you had an older version of iPhoto).

Ok so here's what you gonna do. (had this problem myself today, and after some fiddling figured out what to do.)
Find your old iPhoto with a cross through it, right-click it and select 'show package contents'. A folder will open. In that folder go to Contents>MacOS and there will be three little things there. Click on the one called 'iPhoto' and terminal will open. Leave terminal open and wait four seconds and VOILA! iPhoto opens. Leave terminal open until you are finished with iPhoto, because if you close terminal, iPhoto will close with it. THX! ENJOY! Hope it works.
P.S.
You can close terminal once you close iPhoto. I also suggest backing up your iPhoto library while you can.

Simple fix for slow editing performance in FCP X.

With FCPX, as with all earlier versions, it is best to turn off the audio waveform when being used on iMacs and MacBook Pros. I have been using FCP since 3.0 and have found the audio waveform brings most, but very high end, systems to their knees.
Go to the clip appearance button on the bottom right of your project timeline and select the 2nd from right track option. Doing this has greatly increased the speed of the program and I hardly ever see the spinning beach ball of despair.
When needed the wave form can easily be turned on then off again.
This more than any other option will speed up your editing performance.

I have to shut down FCX after doing about 6-8 projects or it grinds to a snails pace. If I am editing a Motion title I can get maybe a charater a second unless I stop and start FCX. Something is seriously broken.

Was that iTunes' safe mode as opposed to Windows' safe mode? iTunes safe mode is invoked by holding down CTRL+SHIFT immediately after clicking the icon to launch iTunes and continuing to hold until this message pops up:
Click continue, then close iTunes and reopen. With luck iTunes now opens normally every time.

Fix for Apple Mobile Device Services not starting

Finally a fix for Apple Mobile Device Services not starting. Basically I got this from someone else in these forums and it worked. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\Apple and delete any file in there that says Apple Mobile Device Services (I understand these are cached files...I had about 8 files to delete). Next go to your control panel, click on Add/Delete programs, find Apple Mobile Device Support and delete (remove) it. Once this is all done do not reboot, rather open itunes and go to Help menu /Check for Updates and update to the latest version. This will install the latest version of iTunes and also a new version of Apple Mobile Device Services. Next reboot and it should work for many of you...it did for me. Open iTunes and plug in your device...good luck. I wrote this from memory so if some of the phrases don't match exactly what you see I apologize. Also, this worked for me on a Windows XP computer.

I hope this one will, but what do I do if I have the latest iTunes, so it doesn't update? Wait till they come out with an update? It says I need to run the iTunes installer, but I can't find that. IMac or Mac Pro for iPhoto albums and home movie editing?

I have a Mac Pro OS X 10.6.8 with iPhoto 7.1.5. This system is now obsolete for ordering iPhoto albums. I need to upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 to buy a Mac produced photo album. To upgrade iPhoto I need to buy a new Mac as my 2004 Mac Pro with 2008 Snow Leopard can't be upgraded. I will use the new Mac for email, web surfing, iPhoto, and weekend video editing. I use Final Cut Express on my current Mac Pro. I will also need to transfer videos and about 20,000 photos from my current Mac to a new one.
So, here's the question: For my needs (listed above) which is better,
(1) iMac 27" or (2) new Mac Pro? Then, with the one chosen, how should it be configured to do my basic video editing? I have 100 hours of family video on Hi8 and VCR tapes and will edit these on Final Cut and burn them to DVD's. (I understand both iMac or Mac Pro now require an external DVD set-up.) So, which computer and how should it be configured. Looking to pay between $2500-$3500. Thanks for your help!

What video formats are you talking about? DV, HDV, etc?
Mac Pro is a better solution, regardless. Here's why: Simply upgrading an iMac HD is not enough. You do not want to capture your video to the boot drive. It's too much to ask the drive to manage the OS, your editing software, AND your media. This scenario might work - but is certainly prone to dropping frames. Ideally, you want one drive for OS + editing software & a separate drive to capture media to.
Now, since you can only have a single HD in the iMac, you're demoted to using external capture drives. So let's say you get yourself a FW800 drive for capture and then hook up your camera/deck to an available FW400 port. You'd think you're safe - and again, you may be. But the problem now is that the iMac has ONE and only ONE FireWire bus. So in theory these 2 devices: HD & Camera are battling for the same bandwidth. So you've still got a bottleneck happening.
So DV only would probably work. But it may have issues that the expandability of the Mac Pro can conquer. Hope this helps.

Have set Elements 12 as external editor for iPhoto =, but pictures identified for editing don't appear in Elements

Have just installed Elements 12 and nominated it as the external editor for iPhoto. When I identify a pic for edit in iPhoto and direct it to Elements it doesn't appear in Elements.

Usually that means you selected the logical file as your external editor instead of the correct one. The actual PSE editor is buried inside the Support Files folder:

iPhone 5 was so intuitive before the update. Editing photos has changed for the worst-any word of a fix for editing photos for wallpaper? Not a work around, a fix. If I wanted this kind of photo editing I'd still be using my droid x.
