Finally considering using iPhoto - good with large dbs?

I never liked iPhoto before, and when I bought iLife yesterday, iPhoto was the app I had the least expectations for.
But I tried it and immediately liked the auto-events feature. What a great organizing tool. I like the way you can immediately scan events by rolling over them with your cursor. So I'm thinking of using iPhoto from now on.
One question - how good is it with dealing with 20,000 - 30,000 photos, like 20G - 30G of data?
Thanks!

You shouldn't have a problem with that size library as long as you have sufficient free space on your boot disk. It's strongly recommended you have a minimum of 10 GB free, better to have around 20 if you're going to use iDVD much. You have plenty of RAM. Also check the tip at the end of my signature.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Considering using 20" Imac with larger external monitor - good idea?

    I've just returned my 24" Imac for a refund due to the uneven brightness issue. I want a set up for my illustration work, but can't justify the price of a mac pro + monitor. Therefore I'm considering a 20" Imac 2.4 GHZ, and connecting an external 23/24" monitor that has better consistent brightness than the Imac screens, e.g. the Dell 2407WFP-HC or an 23" Apple cinema display. The idea is that, any problems with gradients on the Imac screen won't bother me as I'll be using it merely as a web browser.
    Is this a good idea? Will there be any problems running a larger monitor of the Imac - any compatibility issues etc. Can anyone recommend a good screen around the £500 mark or under? I basically want a screen that isn't obviously brighter on one side than the other, as the Imac appears to be.

    I know uneven lighting is a complaint among 24" iMac users - and I've seen two myself. But not all of them have the problem. You might want to consider trying another before giving up on them. Having said that - take a look at Samsung displays. I don't know what they run in the UK but I'm very impressed with the ones we have at work.

  • Using iPhoto 09 with Adobe CS4

    Hi,
    I am trying to use iPhoto 09 with Adobe CS4.
    I have Adobe as the default external editor and when I click on edit file, it opens the file in CS4. The problem is when I save the file, the changes are not reflected in the image and don't show up in iPhoto.
    I found this:
    Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
    3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    But that doesn't work for me. The original file just shows up again. Any ideas?
    Thanks..

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The following will help you use PS with iPhoto:
    Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
    If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.

  • Using iPhoto 08 with Photoshop elements

    I am a recent Mac convert and I'm loving it.
    However, I need some help understanding how best to use Photoshop Elements in conjunction with iPhoto 08. I was thinking I could use iPhoto to keep track of photos and do basic edits and link to other iLife apps etc, and use Photoshop to do more indepth editing.
    I would like to know the most efficient way to open photos from inside iPhoto, into Photoshop. And how to get them back into iPhoto.
    I realise I can drag a photo and create a copy on to the desk top and then open it with Photoshop, do some editing, save it to a/any folder, then import it back into iPhoto but…
    1) is there a better way to do this?
    2) I'm concerned with filling up my hard drive with multiple copies!

  • Can I use iphoto app with my ipad mini2

    Dear Friends
    I would like to use İphoto application with my İpad mini2 .Is that possible?

    I would like to use İphoto application with my İpad mini2 .Is that possible?
    Do you mean the "iPhoto for iOS" app?
    That is not possible, if you upgraded your iPad to iOS 8.  Unfortunately, iPhoto is incompatible with iOS 8. Apple did not release an upgrade for iPhoto. It can only run on the earlier versions, iOS 7 or earlier.
    You can use the Photos.app on iOS 8, or install  other photo editors. Pixelmator for iOS is quite good on the iPad and has brushed adjustments, and it can access photos on iCloud Drive.

  • Upgrading to iPhoto '08 with large libraby of 30,000 photos

    maybe i can ask my question in a different way since it went unanswered in my other post.
    i am about to install the '08 version. does anyone have any experience doing so from an external hard drive of such a large librarry and if so how did it go?
    thanks!

    Robin:
    If you currently have any rolls that are titled Roll xxxx, you might want to give them some descriptive name before converting. Otherwise they get converted to Untitled Event. It may be easier to rename them now in the more familiar setting than after conversion.
    After conversion be sure to go to iPhoto's Events preferences and set up the time frame for each event. It can be 1 day, 1 week, 2 hrs or 8 hrs. In addition, if you want imports brought in from the Finder make sure the Finder checkbox is not selected.

  • Using iPhoto together with Adobe Lightroom

    I use Adobe Lightroom for my image organizing/tagging needs, since it's way more powerful than iPhoto in this area. I would however like to use iPhoto for my daily image browsing, syncing with my iPhone and for ordering prints/books ++. The way I do this now, is I let iPhoto scan the folder where I have my images. After a while when it gets outdated, I delete the database and rescan in iPhoto. Kinda cumbersome...
    So:
    1. Is there a way I can make iPhoto rescan my image folder? Maybe some script or something that can do it for me?
    2. When I rate images in LR, the ratings are stored in the IPTC Urgency field. When I import to iPhoto it doesn't import this as rating. Any way I can convert IPTC Urgency to iPhoto rating?
    3. Would Aperture be a better choice for working together with iPhoto, or would it be just as cumbersome?

    In reverse order:
    3. Would Aperture be a better choice for working together with iPhoto, or would it be just as cumbersome?
    It’s a lot better. You can grab your previews from Aperture right into iPhoto using a Media Browser, but given that Aperture will do all those things - books, syncing with iPhone etc - you’ll probably need to do it less. Like iPhoto, Aperture is integrated throughout the OS, in every Open... Dialogue, through Media Browsers to integrate with other apps and so on. The primary advantage of using Aperture is that +at least the two apps know each other exist+.
    2. When I rate images in LR, the ratings are stored in the IPTC Urgency field. When I import to iPhoto it doesn't import this as rating. Any way I can convert IPTC Urgency to iPhoto rating
    I don’t think so. There is no real way to move ratings between any apps that I know of. This area of metadata is still in its infancy.
    1. Is there a way I can make iPhoto rescan my image folder? Maybe some script or something that can do it for me?
    No. However there are apps out there that can watch that folder for you and execute specific actions on events occurring. You may be able to cook up an Automator action or Folder Action script that will import to iPhoto when a file is added to the Folder. Or use an app like Hazel to do it for you.
    Update: I’m not sure what this Lightroom plug-in brings to the party, but it may help.

  • Using Iphoto 8 with Aperture 3

    I'm hoping that someone can help me with this one... I have sucessfully imported my existing Iphoto events (Iphoto 8) located on an external HD to my aperture library (on my Mac HD) as referenced files. I then created a new event with new photos imported from my camera on Iphoto, but can't seem to get this new event to Aperture as referenced files. I can import the masters from this event into the Aperture library, but don't want to do that for HD space issues. Basically, I'm still hoping I can use Iphoto as my main repository for photos (on my external HD) imported from my camera, view them quickly, then export a new iphoto Event to Aperture as I need to, but keeping the import as referenced files. I was hoping that Aperture would automatically update the library with new Iphoto events, but I can see the downside of this too. Hope this makes some sense and perhaps someone out there can help! SNNS.

    There is no way to do what you want. You would need to import the photos from iPhoto as Managed, then use the 'Relocate Masters' command to move those out of there again.
    Basically, I'm still hoping I can use Iphoto as my main repository for photos (on my external HD) imported from my camera, view them quickly, then export a new iphoto Event to Aperture as I need to,
    Why?
    The inverse is actually much easier. Import to Aperture (using Referenced Masters as you want) then share your Previews with iPhoto.
    Remember, Aperture is not designed to be used in conjunction with iPhoto. It's a replacement for it and the various tools included are to facilitate moving from iPhoto on to the more powerful app.

  • Running out of memory while using cursored stream with large data

    We are following the suggestions/recommendations for the cursored stream:
    CursoredStream cursor = null;
              try
                   Session session = getTransaction();
                   int batchSize = 50;
                   ReadAllQuery raq = getQuery();
                   raq.useCursoredStream(batchSize, batchSize);
                   int num = 0;
                   ArrayList<Request> limitRequests = null;
                   int totalLimitRequest = 0;
                   cursor = (CursoredStream) session.executeQuery(raq);
                   while( !cursor.atEnd() )
                        Request request = (Request) cursor.read() ;
                        if( num == 0 )
                             limitRequests = new ArrayList<Request>(batchSize);
                        limitRequests.add(request);
                        totalLimitRequest++;
                        num++;
                        if( num >= batchSize )
                             log.warn("Migrating batch of " + batchSize + " Requests.");
                             updateLimitRequestFillPriceForBatch(limitRequests);
                             num = 0;
                             cursor.releasePrevious();
                   if( num > 0 )
                        updateLimitRequestFillPriceForBatch(limitRequests);
                   cursor.close();
    We are committing every 50 records in the unit of work, if we set DontMaintianCache on the ReadAllQuery we are getting PrimaryKeyExceptions intermittently, and we do not see much difference in the IdentityMap size.
    Any suggestions/ideas for dealing with large data sets? Thanks

    Hi,
    If I use read-only classes with CursoredStream and execute the query within UOW, should I be saving any memory?
    I had to use UOW because when I use Session to execute the query I get
    6115: ISOLATED_QUERY_EXECUTED_ON_SERVER_SESSION
    Cause: An isolated query was executed on a server session: queries on isolated classes, or queries set to use exclusive connections, must not be executed on a ServerSession or in CMP outside of a transaction.
    I assume marking the descriptor as read-only will avoid registering in UOW, but I want to make sure that this is the case while using CursoredStream.
    We are running in OC4J(OAS10.1.3.4) with BeanManagedTransaction.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks

  • Using iPhoto Library with Windows XP

    Hello folks,
    I have searched many forums far and wide, but have yet to encounter anyone suffering from my particular problem. I have found many out there who want to use iPhoto on their PC, but they are all offered solutions that don't really work for me. I would really appreciate any and all suggestions.
    Here's the history:  roughly 6 months ago, my MacBook Pro died (after a truly noble effort) and I rescued the hard disk by transferring it to an external enclosure. Since then I have connected it to my fiancee's windows laptop using freeware to read and interpret the HFS+ format.
    And now the problem: I spent months cataloging my photos using iPhoto and I would really like to access these photos again in all their glory, complete with tags, location data, etc. Is there any way I can open the iPhoto library in Windows XP and play around with the photos in a similar way to iPhoto?
    Thanks for taking the time to read, and I hope, reply to my post.
    Al

    You can't.  The iPhoto library is designed to be used with iPhoto only and, as you know, iPhoto only works on a Mac.
    You'll need to get a new Mac if you want to access the library in full again.

  • Using iPhoto, editing with Photo Elements 10, How to have save photos  directly to iPhoto?

    I want to keep using iphoto but use editing capabilities of elements 10. I am having a hardtime saving back to iphoto. Initialy was adding text to photos and had to first "flatten" the layers to be able to save to iphoto. (realized after two hours) Otherwise could'nt. Also corrected blemishes and would not save back to iphoto. It should not be that difficult if it is advertised as "edit directly from iphoto". The saving of the edits back to iPhoto should be straightforward as well, I think. now, common sense is not that common. Can anybody enlighten me? cropping and saving, no issue. THANKS!

      Are you saving by using the same format? e.g. if opening a jpeg from iPhoto it must be saved as jpeg.
    If using RAW images check settings are correct under the General à Advanced tab.
    After Editing in PSE you must save and close in Elements for iPhoto to update correctly. iPhoto makes a virtual copy and it’s possible to right click an image and choose revert to original. Some users prefer to start the process by right clicking an image in iPhoto and choosing duplicate. After editing in PSE, saving and closing; two separate images are visible in iPhoto (the original and the edited version)
    Whichever workflow you prefer - see this tech note for further information.

  • I'd like to use iPhoto '09 with Lion. Tried to install from time machine back-up no go. Tried to install from iLife '09 DVD no go.

    I'd like to run iPhoto '09 on Lion. Tried to install on Lion from Time Machine backup. Got message iPhoto won't work because of a missing Library file. Tried to install iPhoto '09 from iLife '09 DVD. Got message that it cannot be installed on my system. iMovie runs previous versions and iTunes runs previous versions.
    Why can't iPhoto run on Lion? My wife has over 10,000 photos in her library and she's taken the time to sort them into folders. I've recovered the library with the folder sort but have to use it on an external drive with a Snow Leopard system on it. The latest iPhoto ('11) has no provision for organizing into folders. I'd really like to have everything in one place with one OS (Lion) and two iPhoto apps '09 and '11 and I suppose 2 photo libraries. I've been trying to resolve this ever since iPhoto '11 came out and I installed it. I can't begin to tell you how difficult it is to answer the question " Where are my folders?" brian25

    I tried to check the Library setup on iMovie and iTunes. The iMovie Libraries seem to be part of the applications and my iTunes applications have become Russian so I have another problem. I tried to install iPhoto '09 again from my iLife '09 disk. When I selected "Custom Install" to load iPhoto only, the box I got said " A later version of this application is already installed" The iPhoto item which I would choose for a custom install says "skip". Yesterday I ignored this and went on with an install. The final screen said "Installation Successful" There was no iPhoto '09 on my hard drive. As far as I can tell, you cannot load iPhoto '09 from a Time Machine backup. There is no Lion compatable iPhoto '09 in the App store, and iPhoto '09 will not install onto Lion from the iLife '09 disk.I don't understand exactly what you mean by "load my backup and convert again" Do you mean go to the app store and access my purchases and re- download iPhoto '11 and reinstall it and re-convert my iPhoto library? I suppose what I should have done originally was to duplicate my iPhoto '09 library and put it on an external drive for safekeeping. Who knew it wouldn't install on Lion from Time Machine? When I downloaded iPhoto '!! from the app store I should have duplicated it and saved a copy to an external hard drive for safekeeping and then proceeded with installing iPhoto '11 on my hard drive.I suppose when the Thunderbolt concept is fully realized and monster Thunderbolt external droves are in common use this will seem a lot easier. I have rebuilt my iPhoto '09 library and have it on a hard disk that has a bootable copy of Snow Leopard and a working copy of iPhoto '09 also. I think you are telling me to reinstall iPhoto '11 on my internal hard drive and reconvert the iPhoto library used by iPhoto '11. Right? brian25

  • IPhoto crawls with large library

    I am running a Macbook Pro from early 2011, OS X 10.9.5 with 2.7 GHz Core i& process, 4 GB of Ram with 500 GB HD and 160 GB available.  The iPhoto Library alone is 167 GB and iPhoto crawls each time we use it.  We take a lot of photos and video and this file will only get larger over time.
    Is there a solution that would allow iPhoto to operate faster besides upgrading to a new computer?
    Thank you.

  • Using DBMS_METADATA.PUT with large documents

    Hi all,
    I am using the DBMS_METADATA functions and procedures to programmatically store and re-creating database objects. All was working well until I ran into some large create scripts (particularly on partitioned indexes and tables). If I only have a few partitions, the DBMS_METADATA.PUT successfully creates the index, but if my table has 40 partitions, the DBMS_METADATA.PUT fails.
    I came across one post that indicated that this is the result of the EXECUTE_IMMEDIATE being restricted to 32K.
    If that is the case, has anyone successfully found a workaround that will allow me to recreate tables and indexes that have large create scripts.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Again a post with no version number so anyone trying to help has to guess.
    In 11g Oracle merged NDS and DBMS_SQL so that limit no longer exists. In previous versions back to, probably, 7.3.4 you can use the DBMS_SQL built-in package.
    Look at the example "execute_plsql_block" in Morgan's Library at www.psoug.org under DBMS_SQL.
    In 10gR2 and 11gR1, and possibly earlier versions but I do not recall, dbms_metadata.put has a clob option. Look at the demo, again, in Morgan's Library under the package's name.
    But if the point is partitioned indexes be sure you familiarize yourself with DBMS_PCLXUTIL too.
