Finally getting somewhere!!

Thanks to the helpful people on this forum I have accomplished the following after buying my Mac 9600 only three weeks ago:
1.5GB RAM on its way from the States at a tenth of the price in the UK,
Performed a clean install,
Upgraded it from 9.1 to 9.2.1 then to 9.2.2,
Installed, configured and got a Kingston PCI 10/100 NIC running,
Got and installed Office 2001,
Sorted out my disks with Norton Utillies,
Got it to see my router and network with several other PCs,
Installed iCab 3.0.3 and got it on the Net (using it to type this ).
After doing a clean install, I've noticed that window scrolling is very jerky and you have to wait quite a while for the screen and windows to refresh. Before it was almost instant. I think I might have lost a graphics card driver along the way (if Macs use them or are they default OS drivers?) Where would I be able to download them from?
Also what would a good PCI replacement card be? The cards that I have in at the moment are 8MB cards manufactured in 1996 and only go to 1280x1024 in thousands of colours, a 16MB + card would be perfect. Would any of the ATI branded Mac cards that litter E-Bay be any good?
Next on the list is a Sonnet 1GHz cpu card and some software to get me into DTP.
The Net has a lot of resources for PCs such as AdAware, and other utilities, are there any similar programs or websites that the hardened Mac user uses to keep their Mac up to date and free from bugs?
Thanks once again for all your help, I'm actually liking the Mac experience but my main XP machine is starting to feel lonely now..... :-D

"Would any of the ATI branded Mac cards that litter E-Bay be any good?"
Hello Donald,
Yes, the older ATI PCI cards would be good but they seem to be getting scarce on eBay. The only current ATI card that fits in a PCI slot is the Radeon Mac Edition 9200 with 128MB VRAM. I can tell you from personal experience (and that of others) that this card does not play well with OS9. <rant>I've written ATI about my OS9 problems and they basically answered that they do not consider OS9 worth supporting any more.</rant> The 9200 works fine under OSX.
Good candidates ("retail" means the card was once sold separately in a fancy box, and "OEM" means the card was sold directly to Apple for installation in new computers and later pulled):
-- ATI Rage 128 Orion: Has a 128-bit GPU and 16MB VRAM and was one of the best cards for OS9 and earlier. Still a very capable worker that even does well under OSX. Has one VGA port.
-- ATI PCI Rage Pro 128: the OEM equivalent of the Orion. Same comments but is more available on the used/pulled market.
-- ATI Rage 128 Nexus: As near as I can tell the card is nearly identical to the Orion except the latest versions carry 32MB VRAM. A very nice card but hard to find. May have more ports but I've not owned one.
-- ATI Radeon Mac Edition (the "original' with no numbers after the name): IMHO the finest Mac video card ever. Was quite expensive new and has a much faster GPU than the Rage 128 cards. 32MB VRAM. The "original" was replaced by the Radeon Mac Edition 7000 (below) to lower the retail price point to the US$120 level that ATI seems to keep for their home-user cards. The original Radeon was physically different from its replacement in that it has a cooling fan integrated with the GPU's heat sick and five large black circuit chips prominent. Mine has DVI, S-video, and VGA ports.
--ATI Radeon Mac Edition 7000: as mentioned, this replaced the original Radeon but, in lowering the price point, ATI also took away some performance (see this benchmark test). The RME7000 has a passive heat sink on the GPU and four large black circuit chips.
Remember that you are shopping for a PCI card. Most of the cards I see on eBay are AGP that cannot be used in anything older than a G4 "Sawtooth" PowerMac. Also, some cards offered on eBay are really PC versions whose ROM has been "flashed" to trick them into being a Mac card. Some work OK and others do not. I would not recommend a flashed ATI card to a Mac newcomer. Let the experts play with those.
How to spot a flashed video card? Not easy unless the seller is forthright in the description. However, most of the flashed cards I've seen are the Radeon PC Edition 7000 that had 64MB VRAM. ATI never built a Mac PCI card with 64MB of VRAM so that is a dead giveaway that the card has been flashed.
I've heard that nVidea have some older non-ATI drivers (ix, 3dFx, etc) on there web site. There is also a site called MacDriveMuseum that is worth checking. Maybe a new driver will "wake up" your current card and you won't need to find a newer one.
Regarding the processor upgrade, I offer this for your consideration--those are still quite expensive and may not help you that much. Your 9600 will still have a 50mHz bus that will always be the bottleneck. A friend of mine put a G3/400 upgrade in a 7600/132 and was very disappointed with the very modest speed gain. She said that, had she known, she would not have done it.
Hope this helps,
Allan

    Hello All,
    I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
    I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
    I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
    I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
    My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
    Could this be a hard drive issue?
    Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
    Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
    I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
    Thank you so much for your input!

    In logic Pro, when I open up an audio track or software track and load an audio file/loop or software file loop, there is no sound. I will finally get a sound out of one of the audio or software tracks after opening at least 5 of them alternately. Is anyone familiar with this kind of bug? It's really frustrating as this takes much time to complete work.

    I'm not sure I follow your words Fuzzynormal. You've helped by offering the insight that my issue in Logic Pro 9 is not a bug but a feature. But fell short of enlightenment by being a judge of character and of how one should interact in this forum. You insinuate that I haven't tried to solve the issue on my own when in fact I have. These forums are always my last resort. You further suggest that I am complaining. This is not a complaint. It is a genuine issue that I cannot figure out. Then you think that Brazeca is holding my hand and being a nice guy. Brazeca is helping people like me who might not be as adept at using Logic Pro as probably you are.This community forum was established to raise questions, answers and dicussion to help Apple's customers better undertand their operating systems and related issues. You are doing a disservice by not contributing positively and by trying to make this forum what you want it to be. You may have all the time in the world to try figuring out stuff but we are not all like you. We all have different schedules and different levels of understanding. And that is what this forum is for - to help people move forward. If you can't contribute positively then keep silent. And by the way, you say to "read the words that are printed down to explain to you how that works" what words are you talking about? Why don't you be of some help instead of trying to own this forum.

It took me three days to finally get a code to do it and when I tried downloading it, the estimated time was 74 days 17 hours. Now an error occurred. What do I do? I am very frustrated and just want the great software to download in a resonalbe time!

    Take your Mac to a location with a fast, relaible Internet connection that will be all yours during the duration of the download.
    If you want to complain, PLEASE call Apple and do so.
    Internet only downloads of OS X is completely stupid, it assumes everyone has reliable Internet everywhere and /or no data caps.

  • E90! Can we finally get text in calendar's weekly ...

    This feature is missing even from the latest communicators but was available even in my Palm Vx back in 1997! Now with the E90 do we still have to browse day by day to see what is our week like? Or can we finally get a decent weekly view where there are seven columns from monday to sunday and all appointments etc. listed in that day's column with small font? That cannot be too difficult to program and it would make such a difference. See e.g. the old Palm version with vertical display http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/weekview.htm Even monthly view should be possible with horisontal display of the E90 http://www.sthelena.vic.edu.au/thecollege/its/gwwebbasic/images/image045.jpgMessage Edited by benzin on 14-Feb-2007

    The FULL PAGE weekly view let us see TWO appointments in each day's block, TWO. Any more and you had to scroll thru and we all know the "speed" of 9500 refreshing calendar changes. Effort 6, functionality 4 on a 4-10 scale.
    And did Nokia make the block thing on purpose so one has to once again move from one day to another to see what plans one has? Why does not the block contain text???
    But I do not care anymore. After 9110i, 9210i and 9500 I have had enough. I will not give Nokia one more cent. I made the switch to a different brand and could not be happier. And why doesn't E90 communicate with 9210i? Should one really buy a 9300/9500 just to get old data into the new "communicator"? Or buy third party software from Microsoft or IBM (Outlook/Notes)?

    It's probably due to the RAM and processor limitations.

    Have you tried a hard reset of your iPod yet?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
    If that doesn't work, are you still connected to a network?  Either way try connecting to a different one and downloading another FREE app to see if that helps.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Try restarting the phone and trying again.
    If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.

  • Wrong phone listed as returned and still paying for returned phone, how did I finally get a credit?

    I went to the Rancho Santa Margarita store back in February. On the 16th I switched to the Edge program and added my boyfriend. We bought 2 phones under the Edge, however, we needed to return his phone the next day due to no service at his work.
    The sales representative was great and returned the phone, however, on the receipt he listed my phone as being returned. I have been back to the store twice to get it fixed, called them multiple times as well and still no credit for the phone I no longer have in my possession.
    I finally did a live chat with a representative online with Verizon and he said he would look into and take care of it. But recently, I received an email from him saying that there is no record that the phone was returned so I would need to go back to the store that apparently won't or can't help me either.
    It is obvious that the wrong phone was listed on the return receipt since I am using the returned phone listed on my receipt and still paying for it as well. The other phone I am paying for is not even connected to a phone number. So it should be common sense and obvious that the wrong phone was listed as being returned because how could it be if I am using still using the phone that was apparently returned and it is connected to my phone line.
    I have spent hours trying to get this resolved and have now paid $275.12 on a phone that is in Verizon's possession but they won't and/or don't care to acknowledge the mistake on their part of listing the wrong phone returned.
    How can I finally get this resolved and get my money back? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have never had bad customer service until now and would hate to cancel my account, but am very close to that point.

    Ok so I am still perplexed by this situation and why Verizon chooses to ignore my pleas to help me get a refund for a phone that I no longer possess since I returned it to them the next day. I am still having to pay for this phone and am getting extremely upset at this situation.
    To make matters worse since I posted about this situation at the end of January, I did have one person contact me from Verizon and ask me for more information. I provided that information and have not heard back as well as now all receipts related to this incident have been removed from my account. Well I did keep a copy of these on my computer and on several zip drives so I still have the proof of them continuing to charge me for two phones when it shows a receipt of one being returned even though they listed the wrong one.
    I sure hope this was a mistake and not a cover up to try and eliminate all evidence of this mistake.
    Should I go to the better business bureau with this issue? Has anyone else had a similar situation and if so how did you finally get it resolved.
    Thank you in advance for your information and suggestions.

  • IMAP/Exchange Server integration - finally getting all of my folders

    This may or may not be the right place to post this - moderators, please move if not.
    My IT guys were able to get my iPhone talking to our Exchange 2003 Server via IMAP earlier in the week - they had to turn on the IMAP service and open the appropriate port(s). Problem was, I was only seeing my inbox. If my path prefix was set to "INBOX", I saw the inbox plus any sub-folders under inbox. If the prefix path was set to "/", I saw only the inbox - no subfolders under inbox and no other folders at all.
    After testing and surfing, I finally found a solution. This may or may not work for you but as I sit here now, I have full access to ALL of my Exchange folders. AND, it also solved the issue of items sent from my iPhone not going into my Sent Items on the server side and deleted not going into the server Deleted Items. [Still no solution to the riddle of items deleted from my inbox still leaving a copy in my server inbox).
    I deleted all of my mail accounts on the iPhone. Just to be sure, I powered off the iPhone and then back on (I've been a Windows guy for too long, I guess - reboots are a way of life on the other side). I then set up a new IMAP account (not Exchange - I set it up as IMAP under Settings/Mail/Add Account/Other) using all of the same setting as my old account (which was set up as Exchange instead of Other). I did not change anything under Advanced. Presto! I checked my Exchange account and I had every folder - all of my private folders and even all of the Public folders on the Exchange server.
    To solve the problem of making sure I got my Sent & Deleted Items to go into the appropriate Exchange folders, I went into Advanced mail settings on the iPhone and changed the default location of Sent & Deleted to their respective counterparts on the Exchange server.

    I had the same experience. It was just frustration and not knowing anything else to try that made me set up the account under IMAP4 when a specific Exchange option is available.
    As to the deleted item question, I posted this in another thread:
    I haven't had a full day to verify this but the settings-Mail-account - advanced has a default setting of NEVER under the remove option. I take this to mean that it never removes deleted items. I changed it to one day since there is not a "immediate" option.

  • How to finally get rid of those annoying little plus sign boxes in a table

    Hello everyone!
    Pages treat table cells as a _*TEXT BOX*_
    If those +*annoying little plus sign boxes*+ are popping up, do this to get rid of them:
    1. Open Inspector
    2. _*Select all*_ on your table
    3. Click on T
    4. Click TEXT
    5. GO to _*INSET MARGIN*_ and SLIDE until the little plus sign boxes disappear.
    FINALLY the boxes are gone!

    Hej Fruhulda
    Obviously you are one of the fortunate ones who has never had to deal with the dreaded little box with an X in it!
    All of us here were seeing it all the time up until yesterday and it was driving us CRAZY!!
    Imagine this:
    You are trying to get some work done in Pages
    In a table
    You add some text to a cell
    Then you find out that you have to make the table smaller because
    suddenly you have to insert another table on the page
    As you are making the table smaller
    AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    Inside the cell with the text *a little box with an X in it appears* and will not go away.
    If you are working with MANY cells in a table
    You are looking at A LOT OF LITTLE BOXES with X's in them.
    Suddenly you feel *SEA SICK* looking at all those little boxes
    You read the entire iWork Manual line by line BUT cannot find anything to HELP
    Your project is not a numbers candidate
    You have been a mac user for YEARS and YEARS
    You know your macs, you know your mac issues
    WHAT TO DO
    I am sure you can see the dilemma we were in!
    Then all of us realized that this is similiar to a text box issue and cell padding issue from our Adobe CS suite programs and sure enough it WAS!!
    That is basically the problem ALL of US were having.
    So if our solution can help anyone - *WE ARE GLAD*
    because they were probably getting *SEA SICK TOO* trying to get some work done
    Thank your lucky stars you did not ever have this issue pop up on a deadline!!
    Have a great day
    ( I miss my Östermalmstorg FIKA in the afternoon)
    Big Al

  • Will IOs7 finally get rid of duplicated contacts?

    I am trolling though the rumor mill and want to see if anyone can shed some light on this. Since I have gone to the cloud, my contacts have been duplicated up to six times in some instances. I have a lot of contacts and I want to get rid of a lot of older ones that have changed. The only problem is, is that I have about 6K contacts to go through and I just don't have the time.
    Is Apple finally going to address this. After all they wrote the software and could easilly write code that could create a data base for use to look at and delete old contacts or even combine 2 if they were duplicated incorrectly.
    Just some food for thought.
    PS if you know and easy way to get rid of duplicate contacts, please let me know. When I look at my properties of my cloud, I have my local (mac book pro) contacts and I have two clouds.
    Cheers.

    likely not
    take your iphone
    set it to sync with icloud
    set it to sync with google
    take your computer
    set it to sync with icloud
    set it to sync with google
    next sync your iphone will get 2 of each contact it does not matter if there are differences in the data or not
    it have to
    1 override with icloud
    1 override with google
    set every single one as a conflict and let the user resolve them all deciding each conflict
    there is no bulletproof way to handle sync when more then 1 source is involved

  • Does finally get invoked if you use return;

    If I have a method that uses a try block with finally and there's a return in the code, does the finally still get invoked?
    I think the answer is yes but I just want to make sure.
    Example:
    public void writeList() {

    new FileWriter("OutFile.txt"));

    return;
    for (int i = 0; i < size; i++)
    out.println("Value at: " + i + " = " + victor.elementAt(i));
    } catch (ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException e) {
    System.err.println("Caught ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: " +
                   e.getMessage());
    } catch (IOException e) {
    System.err.println("Caught IOException: " + e.getMessage());
    } finally {
    if (out != null) {
    System.out.println("Closing PrintWriter");
    out.close();
    } else {
    System.out.println("PrintWriter not open");

  • After finally getting my imac from fedex,  cannot get past the Update Apple ID and to use ICloud I have to change my app  id.  okay, but the red keeps saying that email address is already being used.  is it because I am on the apple site on a netbook pc?

    On the Update Apple ID screen to use ICloud, I get a red message that email address is already being used.  It does not accept my email address?  I do not understand what the screen is asking me.  Is this because I am using the apple ID on a netbook for this note or what.
    Is there a way to bypass this screen if I don't want to use ICloud?  I don't want to screw up the original setup of my imac.  If I could get to the desktop, then I would know what OS and programs are in my machine.

    Hi, hopefully you've called Apple on this... you have 90 days free phone support.

  • IPod Shuffle Restore..I finally GET IT!!!

    WOW I've finally figured out how to RESTORE the shuffle software. I went out a bought a "Tech Gear" usb 2.0 pci card hoping to increase the transfer rate. It did fly through the first 7 songs then it hung...and hung. To make a long story short I figured the pci card was not going to work with the shuffle so I took it out and hooked the shuffle up to the usb at the back of my Mac. There's where it hit the fan. When I plugged it in "iTunes cannot...please restore to factory settings..." Well I figured after reading all the postings about restoring or updating the software I wouldn't have a problem with this...WRONG!
    I began to panic when the iPod didn't show up in the iTunes Source list because that is how I've updated the software before.
    Now you begin to panic....But if you follow the link http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300701 and carefully read where the software is located on your hard drive you realize that you don't use iTunes to restore the iPod software.
    °°°°TO RESORE iPOD SHUFFLE°°°° open Applications folder/Utilities folder/iPod Software Updater folder and choose the latest and greatest updater!!!!
    I realize that this has probably been posted before but it worked for me so I'll post this in hope that it will save someone some time and effort.

    What about a major scratch..
    What about it?
    Warranties on most any product cover manufacturer defects, NOT damage that you do to the product.
    If you scratch your tv does the warranty cover it?
    Your computer?
    Your car?
    Anything?
