Finally, I got my sata expresscard

PART1
I ordered a Firmtek esata express card, OWC sata controller, OWC dual bay sata enclosure last friday. After 3 day long ........ long waiting, it finally shipped to my house.

The package of Firmtek Seritek 2sm2 is very simple. There is no way can tell it is a 119usd product inside. Open the white box, I found my card in anti-static bay, and a Firmtek installtion cdrom, which makes believe the Firmtek Seritek 2sm2 is actually an OEM product from Vydeo.com. The reason I have this in my mind is that I actually have read of " eSATA 34 is delivered bulk packaged in individual anti-static bags." on Vydeo's web page. Following is the link.
http://www.vydeo.com/products/eSATA.html#update
I am not sure if its driver would make other cheap esata expresscard working on macbookpro. Like this one, http://cooldrives.stores.yahoo.net/2saexcadues.html

PART 2
Installting disks into the OWC dual bay sata enclosure took me less than 5 min. The enclosure came with 2 esata cables, 2 legacy - esata power connecters, 8 screws. The power supply of the enclosure rocks! It is dc 5v-3a, 12v-3a. Most large capacity sata hard drives require at least 1A dc power to run. In my case, I have 2 WD SE16 250g 7200rpm 16mb disks which need 2A in total.
http://www.elesson.com.cn/modules/ipboard/uploads/post-2-1154357884.jpg
Installtion of the express card is easy. Run the driver installtion app on the cdrom, then insert the express card into the express card slot all the way, untill it is locked. The funny thing is OSX did not recognize any of the 2 disks at the first place, untill I restart the system. Then I used disk utility in OSX to make the RAID 0.
http://www.elesson.com.cn/modules/ipboard/uploads/post-2-1154361675.jpg
PART 3
Here are problems I found.
The disk array does not enter sleep mode after I close the MBP lid or set the MBP into sleep mode. Unlike my fw1394a enclosure, the disk array is still working when it is suppoesed to "sleep".
The disk array does not shut down automatically after I eject it. I think the Firmtek esata express card shold stop all the disk reading/writing heads working then it shuts down the disk, and after that I can turn off the power swith of the OWC enclosure. Instead of, after I eject the disk arrey in osx, disks are still working, which makes me WORRY about the shutting down procedure might damage the disks. Because, it is just like a sudden power drop out...........
PART 4
The performance of this combo is super. I ran a disk benchmark using xBench to make myself believe the dollars I spent were worthy. The Raid 0 is actually 3X faster than my MBP's internal 5400 rpm 80g HD. It writes at 121 mb/s while the internal HD does it at only 39 mb/s. Following the a RAID 0 VS INTERNAL HD chart.
http://www.elesson.com.cn/modules/ipboard/uploads/post-2-1154360600.jpg
Now I am capturing DV content in FCP with it.... I am happy with the performance.
Conclusion:
pros:
Unlike Steve Job's 4X faster theory of Intel Macs, the Firmtek Seritek 2sm2 actually gives me a 3X faster HD performance increase.
The power supply comes with the OWC dual bay sata enclosure is great....
This combo does not take a lot room. It is compact.
cons:
The documentation of the Firmtek Seritek 2sm2 is poor. I even can not find a printed manual.
No accessories come with card. It should at least provide one esata cable.
No online support at Firmtek. I am worried about future driver updates etc.
It is not a 119 USD product building quality.
Anyway, I recommend it to who need sata raid on your MBP, since it truly delivers a 3X faster HD speed increase.
p.s., can anyone tell me how to post pictures here? thanks.^_^

It sounds as if the button in the headphones is stuck and that is what is doing it. In the one wire of the headphones is a button to activate Siri. It is very possible something is wrong with that. Does the phone activate Siri all the time when the headphones are not plugged in? The headphones have the same warranty as the phone. Take the device with the headphones back to the Apple store and they can replace them.

We need to get a bootable external E-SATA HDD connected via E-SATA ExpressCard adaptor to this laptop however there are 2 main question before we purchase those hardware:
1 - will it be bootable at all?
2 - what speed is going to be provided by the ExpressCard slot on this laptop - is it comparable with E-SATA standard?
I'm purchasing the card here http://www.ebay.com/itm/add-2-eSATA-Hard-Disk-ports-for-Laptop-Notebook-PC-fits-34mm-Expresscard-slo...   but still can't understand is it compatible and what speed will I get on the slot of my laptop - taking into account your official specification:
    "    1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)"
Could you please advise us on the above?

wiki explains that "...The ExpressCard has a maximum throughput of 2.5 Gbit/s through PCI Express and 480 Mbit/s through USB 2.0 dedicated for each slot, while all CardBus devices connected to a computer share a total 1.06 Gbit/s bandwidth." - but:
how can I know whichever bus (PCIExpress or USB) is used in my laptop for this interface?

  • Anyone with e-sata expresscard 34 problem in new macbook pro 17" ?

i use a e-sata expresscard 34 to conect my e-sata hard drive to my 15" 2008 macbook pro. and it is fine.
now that i bought the new 17" macbook pro, it is not working at all.
does anyone with the same problem?
    thanks

You would do far better starting your own thread, particularly as the question is marked as answered. If you were to do a Google search for "3 beeps+Mac" you would find that this means something like memory banks did not pass memory testing.
If you look near the top of this page, there is a search facility: entering "3 beeps" comes up with the same answer and some links.
Your problem is memory and if you have taken it out and reseated it properly, I would suggest running the hardware test (start up and press the D key; on some Macs you will need to do this with the Install disk). And depending on the result of that: back to the shop.

  • Finally, I got iPhoto 6 installed, no regret.

I just picked up a copy of iLife06 after dinner, did what Old Toad mentioned in the other thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=348637&tstart=0. Before the installation, I recorded the numbers of each photo folder. Installed iPhoto 6, repair permission, restart my powerbook. Launch iPhoto 6, convert my library and rebuild thumbnails. Installation took a few minutes and it was nice and smooth. After all, I check my photo folders again, the numbers of photos are exact the same as what I had in iPhoto 5. I quickly went through my photo library and all the photos are still there. Then I run the 6.01 update and repair permission, launch iPhoto again and it works. One thing I don't understand is, most people in the forum claim the iPhoto library size has been increased after upgrade, I actually got less after upgrade. Before upgrade the size was 8.46gb, now I have 8.37 in iPhoto 6 folder.
Thank god.......I will spend a bit more time playing with iPhoto 6 tomorrow, keep you guys posted. Cross my fingers
P.S. The performance is incredible, much faster than iPhoto 5, it rocks!

  • K8N Neo2 SATA Raid problem finally solved

    Hi guys,
finally got my SATA Raid 0 array to work.
Problem was that XP didn't find a correct array on installation although i used F6
to load drivers from disk. Sometimes it didn't detect any hard disk, sometimes
it showed two hd's and an array and so...
The whole spectrum of errors mentioned here over the last days and weeks...
I tried different bios like 1.1, 1.2, 1.2b5, 1.3b5 and i got the newest drivers
directly from nvidia as mentioned in some other thread. Nothing worked.
One should think that nvidia would have the latest drivers... but that was the
    major fault.
As mentioned in a different thread i downloaded the unified nforce drivers from
nvidia's homepage and extracted the ide drivers to a floppy. I used these drivers
in all of my attempts and it never worked..
Yesterday i downloaded the MSI Nvidia nForce3 System Drivers package 5.03 from
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=607&kind=1
and compared the version numbers to the files from the nvidia package.
The relevant files nvatabus.sys and nvraid.sys are version 5.10.2600.412 from
nvidia while the MSI versions are 5.10.2600.446 !!
I put these files on the disk, set up my bios (default 1.1) from scratch, started XP installation,
hit F6, loaded the new drivers and voila... one 230 gb array ready for installation
Took me FOUR days to figure this out. THANK YOU MSI support team,
wherever you are.... (definitely not working on an updated hp)
So to put it in one line:
What really worked for me were the drivers from the MSI nforce3 driver package 5.03
No messing around with beta bios, no voltage tweaking or SATA 3/4 preferred
    or DIMM Slot preferred crap.
Of course you have to set up an raid array as described in rsheppicks raid setup guide
Only thing about bios versions is that only in bios 1.1 i got an array shown in the
    hard disk boot priority list
So i hope this helps you guys out there that are having troubles setting up SATA Raid.

OK now! Dag, I was going crazy. I had two brand new Raptors and was trying to hook them up in a RAID 0 config. I am no dummy. It would hang at detecting arrays. I could not figure it out for the life of me. I will not talk about all of the combos that I tried. My buddy told me to try datalifeguard from WD. I did. Well, one HD showed no serial number in the extended test. An error message popped up. Said the drive was not working. So, Newegg sends me a dead drive and wastes days and days out of my life. I hooked up the one good drive just now. What do I see? For the first time in my life, I am seeing the raid bios! This almost cost me a divorce. Seriously though, the wife would come in and rub my shoulders like a fighter after a few hours of getting my azz whipped by this new rig. I am now going to make the floppy with the newer drivers like was done here. Just incase. I am in Raid bios now in the other room. Time to go set up XP on one drive for now. I refuse to wait for the RMA'ed second Raptor.

  • Yea - Finally got the new iSimple IS77 connection for the 3GS in my car.

I had an audio 'line-out' connector installed in my car for my iPod but it didn't produce audio from my iPhone. Finally, I got a connection from Peripheral Electronics that does the job. I pretty much don't need my iPod anymore because now I can use the iPhone to play tunes in true 'line-out' audio fidelity from the iPhone through my car stereo. This is handy because I always have my iPhone with me and I don't have to haul around the iPod do do tunes I want in my car. It sounds great!

    no comments, but good hook-up.

  • I finally made the switch at last !!!!!!!

I have wanted an apple computer now for over a year but I have never been able to afford one as I am a student but finally I got together the money and have purchased a 20" iMac 2.1ghz with 1.5gb RAM and the 250HD.
I ordered it last week and the guy said I should be seeing it either late this week or early next week.
Unfortunately I am sat here now writing this message on my Windows PC. I hate this PC and when I try and do anything strenuous other than surf the net it has a pady and freaks out.
For some reason I cant seem to get creative when doing assignments on this ugly machine and then as soon as I get to Uni and get sat in front of a PowerMac I feel as tho I want to work!!
I also ordered Logic Pro 7.1 because I am doing music technology at Uni and this is my main package. I also have a mass of other packages here now to load on such as Nuendo, Stylus RMX, and Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks.
Any other switchers out there that have switched to a new iMac???

Cheers. I have now been using Apple computers for over 2 years and so hopefully I should be on a good level of knowledge, but it will be different as this machine will be mine instead of uni's and so all the features that are locked of at our uni, I will be able to access and discover (as soon as it arrives) and no doubt I will have some more questions for you all soon.

  • Sata drive problems

right my dilema is this i have buit a new system and everything works fine, finished it off by buying a couple of maxtor sata drives, a 200gig for storage and a 120gig for boot/os.
maxblast3 i cannot get to run from cd or floppy but it runs fine from windows so i am able to see the drives and format them etc.
saturday i spent best part on 12 hours trying to install windows xp on the 120 and everytime i was defeated, and finally got off with it, so cracked a bottle open
    ok then install process was
    boot form cd
    xp cd in drive
mobo sata drivers in floppy ready
press any key to boot from cd
    wait abit
F6 to install extra drivers, done that ok
cd activity copying files over ready to install
your pc will reboot in 15 seconds
boots up fine, don't press key to boot from cd
    bang my problem begins
the screen reads like this " press any key to boot from cd........error loading operating system"
anyone else suffered this and managed to get around it ? this happens "everytime"
so the next thing was to try the 200gig even though it was not recognised as 200gig (137) and install xp so i done exactly the same as above and everything went fine xp installed no problem. however i don't want xp on this drive as i do not want to partition it and it is too much messing round to get windows to recognise its true size.
the 200gig is a diamondmax +10 ncq 7200rpm sata/150 it has no molex and no jumper place on it.
the 120 is a diamondmax +9 7200rpm sata/150 now this drive has a molex plug and a jumper place like an ordinary drive, it also has a sata power point and sata connection point. it look exactly like an ide drive with ide plug pulled off and sata point put on it  i thought sata's did not need jumpers ?
another thing i have noticed....in your system tray you have an icon like a little grey box with a green arrow above it that you use to safely remove hardware like usb stuff etc my drive shows up in there ?
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...orbog/sata1.jpg
anyone got a sata 120 gig as a boot drive ? what make do you have ?
    my pc spec is
    msi k8n neo2 mobo
    1 gig dual channel ram
    amd 64bit 3200 winchester cpu
    antec neopoer 480w psu
    plenty cooloing
    msi 6600gt 128mb graphic card
using ide drive at the mo
hope this makes sense, thanks for any advice
forgot to add the 120 works fine as generic storage drive just can't get an o/s onto it.

Just threw that into the discussion to see if it would lead anywhere. I'm using Hitachi sata drives and they are the same as the IDE drive with an added chip foir the sata (think that is why they still have the old style power connection along with the sata connection)
my system's based on the same mobo (k8n neo4) with only one Hitachi80GB sataII hdd... and i have the same trouble like 'gravies': i'd get windows to start install (with help of drivers off floppy; by F6) but when it reboots to actually set up the system it hangs... not recognizing the boot files written on my SATAdrive = or the drive itself...
Did you somebody resolve this problem?
It's driving me crazy already 4 looong days...  (first i also had faulty floppy../

  • ATA + SATA disks

    Hello everyone!
Not so long ago, I used to use Slackware. I've bought new PC with Core 2 Duo recently, so I wanted also x86_64 OS. In order not to recompile Slack's packages I decided to check out Archlinux.
I was trying to install Arch, but faced one big problem. I've got one SATA and one ATA disk, and I want to install Arch on the ATA one. The problem is, that Arch (and actually other live distros neither) doesn't see this ATA disk. When I type 'fdisk -l' it shows partitions on the /dev/sda, but there's nothing about the disk which should be /dev/hda.
Because of the fact that on Window$ (not only I use this computer ) everything works, i thought the problem lies in drivers/modules, but...
    I've tried to load ide_core, ide_disk, piix... doesn't work.
I've tried to turn off the SATA device (unplug cable and run installer), still doesn't work.
    How are they connected?
    SATA - port 5 - DVD-RW
    SATA - port 6 - Hard disk
IDE - channel one (the only one on my motherboard) - Primary Master - Second hard disk
I think there's no RAID or something enabled by default... My mainboard is MSI (Intel P35 Chipset) Neo2-FIR
By the way, on 32bit version I have the same problem.
    Last edited by un_ospito (2007-09-13 13:43:25)

    I found : "1 IDE port by Marvell 88SE611" in mainboard's instruction. I've tried to load pata_marvell, but it still doesn't work. Finally I googled: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? … l+88SE6111
I see people have problems with this. So, how to run it on arch?

  • What Is, And Why do I need it: ExpressCard/34 Slot?

In the very near future I will be obtaining a 17" MBP. That's just savvy, except for one minor detail. What is an ExpressCard/34 slot, why do I need one, why would it have been included in this particular size MBP and what can I shove in there?

The expresscard slot is for expansion purposes. it allows a low cost esata connection to your macbook pro. you can plug an esata adapter in and then use one of many external esata enclosures. "apiotek ec-0003d" costs about 40 bucks and will let you add 2 non-bootable external esata enclosures then can run at 3Gbps. fw800 runs at 800Mbps..
"OWC esatat sata expressCard/34Adapter" bootable 1 esata adapter is 19 bucks it will let you add 1 esata enclosure at speeds up to 3Gbps.
so if you get the non bootable one you can add 2 enclosures like "sans digital towerStor Ts2ct". that would be up to 4Tb for each one total of 8tb far faster then fire wire. if you get the bootable 1 esata type you could add 1 external at 4tb. this lets you macbook pro boot from a 4tb external at internal speeds. kind of gives you the ability to make you laptop a real desk top when you want it to be that. Then back to a real lap top by unplugging it. Not trying to sell any of the above items I just happen to use them.
This option was pulled from iMac's a real drag as iMacs could use more fast enclosures.

  • ExpressCard/34 not working in BootCamp Windows 7 64-bit. Apple's BIOS emulation does not give enough resources.

    MacBook Pro unibody, 15" 2009
ExpressCard/34 (Card is by Transcend TS-RDF1, JMicron chip for SD card) is not working in BootCamp Windows 7 64-bit. Windows reports:
"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."
Other data points: Card works fine in Mac OSX, worked under Windows XP 32-bit (initially reported same problem, but works after reboot).
Checking the forums there seems to be no actual device suggested to actually remove that would help the problem. And even if it was, the concept is ridiculous. What other device would you like to remove? Display adapter? Network adapter? No way. I use all available devices and don't want to compromise.
It seems like BIOS emulation does not allocate enough resources to ExpressCard.
Are others having the same problem?
Does anyone have a fix for this?
Is there anyone at Apple who cares to provide a solution?

It is not a driver problem, but a problem in the BIOS emulated by bootcamp on some (not all) MBP models. So unless Apple fixes it in bootcamp, there is no real solution. And obviously, Apple doesn't care. They are dropping the Expresscard slot anyway.
Unfortunately, this poster seems right: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=912259 :
The 2008/2009 Macbook Pros don't allow to use the ExpressCard slot because of EFI/Bootcamp errors (Windows Vista/7 cannot allocate an IRQ to the slot). You don't need any drivers for using an ExpressCard slot on Windows, you only need the drivers for the corresponding card you are using.
Bootcamped XP allowed to use the slot, but you could not use hot-plugging.
    And from the Sonnet site ( http://www.sonnettech.com/product/tempo_sata_express34.html ) :
Tempo SATA ExpressCard/34 not supported under Windows 7 or Windows Vista when running on unibody MacBook Pro computers. The problem is caused by the MacBook Pro's BIOS emulation, which doesn't allocate enough resources to support certain kinds of Expresscard/34 devices, such as a SATA controller, in these operating systems.

  • Can't achieve 6GB/s with sata 3 HHDs

    Hi all,
I just did my first MSI build on the 880GMA-e53.
Using two WD sata 3 blue HDs, 500 GBs each configured in raid 0 using the Marvell SE9128 controller. Yes I'm on the correct sata ports, 7,8.
Installed XP home 32 bit, partitioned the drive, then installed w7 pro 64 bit.
Device manager is clear and the pc is nicely responsive.
However, using HD tune it shows just over 200MB/s at best and says I have sata 2 HDDs under the info tab.
    HD tune is outed.
Using Atto, I only max around 225MB/s.
I am using sata cables that I had for awhile and they are around 18" long.
Bios is set to IDE not ACHI and naturally I am enabled and set to RAID.
Downloaded a file from MSI for sata 3 support.
Why am I nowhere near 6GB/s?
Setup: PhenomII 550, two cores successfully unlocked, tested in torcher mode using intel burn.
8 GBs of OCZ black edition ram. Running the onboard 4250.
    Seasonic PSU 530 watt.
When I was running blue WD hdds in my asus M4a78T-E
in a raid 0 config, 320GBs each, it scored the same HDD number as my sata 3s, 5.9.
    Why no faster?
    Thank you in advance,
    Sabbath

    You also need sataIII cables
That's also a marketing myth, there's no such thing as a 'real' SATA rev3 cable. Found this info from another site:

Here is what the SATA-IO organisation that specifies the Sata revisions says about cables in its FAQs
    http://www.sata-io.org/documents/SATA-Revision-3.0-FAQ-FINAL.pdf
Q9: Does SATA 6Gb/s require different connectors and cables to support the higher
    transfer speed?
A9: The same cables and connectors used for current SATA 1.5 and SATA 3.0 Gb/s implementations can be used to connect SATA 6Gb/s devices, although SATA-IO recommends
quality components be selected to ensure data integrity and robust operation at the faster SATA
6Gb/s transfer rate. Keeping the existing SATA connector form factor enables SATA 6Gb/s to
be designed into the same cost-conscious hardware architectures while minimizing
    infrastructure changes.
Q14: Were there any attenuation or jitter issues that had to be addressed with the jump to
    6Gb/s?
A14: Ensuring signal integrity was the primary challenge in doubling the SATA transfer speed
for a second time while using the same cables and connectors that were originally defined for
    the first generation 1.5Gb/s version.

connectors and cabling used for SATA 3 Gb/s under SATA Revision 2.6 can be used for

I just recived my Akasa SATA3 cables yesterday. I have been using the SATA2 cables and there is abselutly no diffrence between performance on SATA2 vs SATA3 cables. All benchmarks were the same, so it looks like it is just an selling argument  that you need SATA3 cables.

  • I got error msg while i called the Java Funtion in XI thro XSLT

    Hi,
In XI, i need one method/function for getting the current date/time without any parameter, because its only shows the current date/time from getting the system. So,I have been created a simple method/function in java without any parameter for getting the current date/time from the system. Using the XSLT to call the mehtod/function and assigned in the particular field. After i mapped that XSLT  file in the XI, i executed in XI and also i gave input for some other fields and finally i got the Transmission error message.
    <b>Error Message:
javax.xml.transform.TransformerException: com.sap.engine.lib.xml.util.NestedException: Illegal number of arguments or types of arguments in a call of function 'dateEST:ConvertToEST'.</b>
Here ConvertToEST is the method/function name, method/function was return in String datatype, and also in XI that field have same String datatype. This field have only return the current date/time.There is no input for this.
I have been excuted this method/function in Java, its working fine. So, give me your suggestion for this.
p.s. Award points if your answer is useful for me.
    Thanks & Regards
