Finally made connection after many weeks

I've posted a few times about not being able to connect from here in the UK to my daughter in the US, but I can connect within the UK. Its been very frustrating. But I found an external Hard Disk Drive which had my old system on before I upgraded to OSX 10.4.3 - it has OS10.4.2 with iChat v3.0.1.
Guess what? I got through to my daughter with it. We couldn't connect with my internal 10.4.3 drive (with iChat v3.1), trying many times, so I re-booted using the old 10.4.2 and connected second attempt. Well, at least I have a way to talk to them now.
This proves that the port settings in my router (SMC ADSL Barricade connected by ethernet) are not the problem; my ISP (BT Broadband) is not the problem; the US end is not the problem.
But it does seem that something was changed for the worse when Apple released the OSX 10.4.3/iChat v3.1 combination.
Any of you having similar problems who have the old system, I definitely recommend trying this.

Do you have a media reader installed on your computer?

  • IPod won't connect after 2 weeks of working perfect

After using my iPod for a couple of weeks with no problems, all of a sudden, it does not connect when I plug it into the dock. It will charge, but the "Do not Disconnect" logo does not come on and iTunes won't recognize it.
I definitely have the newest software on the iPod. I even downloaded iTunes again, even though I already had the up to date version. I am using the iPod Video on Windows with the Universal Dock. This is my fourth iPod so I am not a total newby. I have tried all of the normal fixes.
I have tried three different connection cables with the same results. The kicker is that my iPod Nano connects and works perfectly sitting in its dock right next to the iPod Video.
If anyone has had this problem or has any ideas please let me know.
I have reset the iPod more times than I can count.
iPod updater does not recognize it. "Please plug in an iPod to update it" is all that I get from that.
I have connected the iPod directly to my PC using three different cables (all of which work fine with my Nano).
The iPod is showing as a USB Mass Storage Device in XP's device manager.
The iPod DOES charge while in the dock.
    Thanks, Rick

Without knowing which iPod model, Operating Systems, USB or Firewire and other specifics everyone has, it's hard to isolate what exactly the problem may be. I don't think all of you are having the exact same problem, but maybe you are.
Richard, looks like you covered all the bases. Here are a few more things, if you haven't tried. If your Nano and Video are both connected, it could cause problems. I saw a post awhile ago about a guy who's problems went away when he only connected one iPod. Actually, it's best to disconnect all USB devices you can while trouble-shooting, especially if they are a USB storage device. You mentioned trying different cables, what about different USB ports? You mention that the "Do not Disconnet" logo does not appear, but the device manager sees a USB Mass Storage Device. I'm not sure if that's possible, that the Do Not Disconnect will not appear, but it is being recognized by the device manager. Is the device manager seeing a different Storage Device? ...or is that what's happening? Maybe it's time for Steven's option #4. Here's a few more ideas for everyone.
-Make sure the iPod is charged, charging for 4 hours will do it. Some USB ports are not high-powered ports and won't charge an iPod.
-Reset and Restore do different things. Reset mostly resets back to factory settings and calibrates the keys (don't touch any keys while it is calibrating), and you should not loose any data on the iPod. Resets are mostly done by holding down key combinations on the iPod and different iPods have different key combonations, make sure you are resetting for the iPod you have. If the iPod won't reset (comes up with Exclamation Folder, Frozen, etc...), mostly likely will have to be serviced.
-Uninstall iTunes, iPod. This means completely uninstalling. There are some folders that may have settings stored in them that are not removed when uninstalling iTunes. Remove them also; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698. Restart the computer between uninstalling and reinstalling, especially if using Windows.
-Update the iPod. Download the latest version of Updater for your Operating System, there is one for MAC and one for Windows. Updater is also where you will Restore your iPod; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60944
-Restore will erase all the data on the iPod (have backups of the data, it can't be recovered from the iPod) and restore it's factory settings (disable disk mode, etc). Restore is done from the Updater program. Here is information on restoring; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983.
-Check the system requirements for your iPod model. Win XP (Home and Pro) usually needs Service Packs (SP) 1 and 2. Some iPods will work with only SP1, but it's best to have both. Win 2K requires SP 4.
-Try getting updates for your computer, especially if you are using PCI cards for USB or Firewire.
-Isolate the iPod. Disconnect other USB devices, especially if they are storage devices. Stop any programs that might be running in the background, disable virus software...3rd party software can interfere.
-Some Toshiba notebooks with the VIA chipset "will not work" with iPods. Hopefully you have access to another computer.
The following article might help. "iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes"; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716.
I'm interested in what everyone finds out. Good luck.

  • ITunes RADIO is not working.  "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so -  iTu

    iTunes RADIO is not working.
“iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again.” Try as I may, as many as ten attempts, trying to connect after restart, after shutdown, nothing works. Just so …
iTunes STORE not “connectable” with my otherwise perfectly-working internet connection, viable, up and running for all other uses.
Simply put, firstly, I can't connect to the internet when I click on Radio.  People are quite suspicious that this is Apple incompetence or your company's famous arrogance for this commonly-suffered problem that you won't or “can’t” fix.
Read the many web comments and you won’t be pleased with yourselves: the suspicion is that if you ruin internet radio on iTunes, Apple will somehow make more money on music downloads, etc. Bull.
Also, thirdly, my old playlist of 20 or so internet radio stations in the Ambient category STILL PLAYS !
Then fourth, I installed the latest available version of QuickTime Player 7.app Version 7.6.6 but it didn’t solve the problem either. I had QuickTime Player.app Version 10.2, but substituted what Apple website said was the latest, LOWER NUMBERED QuickTime Player version of 7.6.6
Fifth, I can't connect to iTunes store no matter what I do or what user group's advice I try. So I can’t buy or download anything from iTunes. Bad for business.
Sixth, I updated to the latest version of iTunes but this weird problem remains. All suggested Apple fixes or user group fixes are useless. Where is Apple’s famous technical competency, vaunted customer support?, and user-friendly product reputation? Get it back, please.
Solve this problem of yours ASAP for us, your numerous disgruntled, dissatisfied customers of iTunes. You can do better, should, and really –in all fairness- must.

NOTE:  no password for iTunes exists in my Keychain. Is this a problem?
Apple ACCOUNT ID, and iTunes ID password, works but not to access iTunes with my healthy internet connection.
Apple store id It works via direct internet connetion but not through iTunes.  Very strange.

Recently I was working on my home Network and lost myPassword for my Home wireless connection. After many attempts, I remembered thepassword and was able to get in. Now the MacBook Pro only works at home on aHard wire connection. I have an additional 9 devices on the same network, allare functioning properly. The Air connection works fine at any other Networksout side the Home connection. I did a PRAM reset, deleted the Network profileand rebuilt in System Preferences. Still unable to connect wireless on Homenetwork. Any Ideas?

I seem to have fixed it by putting <div  class="clearfloat"></div> after the navigation bar?

  • My macpro buckled and broke up a year ago. A month ago got wet and I dried it near a heater. It froze and the mouse can not click the connection through. After three weeks I plugged in readjusted the date and it worked for about 20 minutes.. any idea?

My laptop macbook pro fell with me out of a truck and buckled last June 2012. It still worked although bent and open. A month ago it got wet and stop working and I dried it near a heater and it worked. The battery is dead. Then it froze on the screen the mouse can not grab the attention of the screen when it clicks. The track pad no longer responds and has buckled more. Then after three weeks of not touching it I plugged it in reset the date and connected and it worked. I began to back up my material and then it froze again.

Though the MBP may be disfigured, there is a real possibility that the HDD is still functional.  Take it out of the MBP and place it in an enclosure and connect it to another Mac.  You may be able to recover all of your data.

  • No network LAN-connection after iOS 5.1.1update

Today i tried to solve a big issue after updating my AppleTV's to 5.1.1 (actual version: AppleTV3,1_5.1_10A406e_Restore.ipsw). After updating my Apple TV´s, they could not connect to  the Apple activation server. No Home Sharing was adjustable and also logging in iTunesStore was not possible. The update I have done via LAN cable, and I changed  nothing in my network configuration. The network (networkadress via DHCP) is indeed set up by default in the AppleTV automatically. Nevertheless, nothing went. Then I removed the network cable and made a reset of the AppleTV and tried to connect via Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi, he finds the activation server and everything works as it should. Home Sharing, iTunes, streaming. However, once the network cable is plugged in and the Apple TV is restarted, it is again not possible to get access the iTunesStore. Home Sharing is not possible. The networkcable are fine. Both MacBook, as well as my TVs have internet connection over the same network cable. If I unplug the network cable from the AppleTV again, anything goes. Only via WLAN, but it's just too slow to stream data from my Mac. I have this "strange behavior" on 3 AppleTV 3.Gen., which are in the apartment. The previous iOS-Version on the same network cables, worked great. Can anyone reproduce the problem? Or have I now 3 bricked devices? I tried to downgrade over itunes. But this is not possible anymore. I installed 3 times the update. But nothing goes. Please can anybody help me.

I found another link titled "Apple TV Death after update"  and found several links that have proven to work to restore to the previous version.  Here is my post:
"I had originally replied to a post titled "No network LAN-connection after iOS 5.1.1 update". That has been my issue after updating to 5.1. Wirless worked for me but iTunes match and Podcasts were slow to respond. I finally downgraded to the previous version (5.0.2). So far, my ATV3 has been operating exactly as it did out of the box. No more activation failed message, and all components of ATV are functioning flawlessly on my whole home LAN network.
I also wonder what Apple was thinking for releasing this update without adaquate testing. I can forgive them for Maps, but not this. ATV has been around long enough for all of the kinks to be worked out and any updates to just plain work. I did like the new menu displays in apps and how you could rearrange the program icons on the home screen.
Perhaps they will get it right. Some day. But until they show proof that any future updates are correct and provide detailed instructions on how to revert back to a previous version, I will be very leary of updating. Spending a week reading message boards on how to do a simple resotre is not my idea of how to spend my weekends.
As a side note, I am a PC, so to restore from an .ispw file located on your system, you must press the Alt & Shift keys togather, then click the Restore button, and a window will pop-up so you can select the location for the restore file."
    Directions to restore:
"Yes you can. I am a PC. Download the .ipsw file and save to your desktop. Unplug the LAN, HDMI and power cable. Connect the usb cable from your laptop to the ATV. If iTunes does not automatically launch, start it. After iTunes is running, plug in the power cable to the ATV. iTunes will recognize the ATV and will open the restore window in iTunes.
Press the Alt and Shift keys togather, then click on the Restore button. A file window will open so you can navigate to the desktop (or where ever you saved the file). Select the AppleTV3,1_5.-.2_9B830_Restore.ipsw file. iTunes will start the restore process.
When you see the message that it has completed the restore, unplug the usb cable and power cable. Reconnect the LAN and HDMI cable then plug in the Power cable in that sequence.
Follow the setup procedure again and all should be as it was before."

  • Apple programs will not recognize Internet connection after Tiger upgrade

In January, I posted the question below. I wanted to update it, but this site has archived it and will not allow responses. In the hope that I may help someone else, I am repeating my question, now that I have the answer.
    ===============================================
    ORIGINAL PROBLEM
Last week, I upgraded from 10.3.9 to Tiger. Ever since then, I have had trouble using Apple's programs that require internet usage: Safari, iTunes, Software Update, etc. All of these programs think I am not connected to the Internet. But I am; I can use Netscape, Internet Explorer, and other non-Apple programs on the web.
Furthermore, it's not consistent. Sometimes Safari will recognize the connection. I'll be using Safari, looking up websites, when suddenly it will quit connecting, giving me the message, "Cannot connect to the server," no matter what server it is, even apple.com (so I have to use Netscape to access my .Mac and this Support screen).
    How can I resolve this?
    ==============================================
The problem was that my Earthlink Access software was setting a proxy on my connection. Netscape & Firefox worked because they ignore any proxies; the Apple programs (plus Shiira and Internet Explorer) didn't connect because they use the proxies.
Why did it sometimes work? Well, if I first used Safari to go to a secure website of my bank, somehow that opened up the connection and then I could continue to use the Internet and Internet based programs like iTunes and widgets. However, if I tried to use an Internet-based program before going to the secure site, then it wouldn't work.
After months of phone calls and e-mails and sending data packets and all such stuff with Apple Care, they finally stumbled upon this answer: Uncheck the proxy box. And that did it. At first I had to uncheck it every time I started up the computer, but now it stays unchecked and I can use my Apple programs with no trouble.
I just wanted to share this with you in case you also had trouble with Internet connections after upgrading to Tiger, because I did see several other people had this same trouble.
Movable flat-screen iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25Ghz processor, 256 MB memory (DDR SDRAM)

For the record, could you state each Proxy box you ended up unchecking please? I'll attempt to submit a user tip with credit to you for finding this solution.

  • Recently i upgrade my iphone 3gs to IOS5. currently , after a week my iphone keep on crashing

recently i upgraded my iphone 3gs to IOS5. currently , after a week my iphone keep on crashing and restarting.
    Please help me.

I have a iPhone 3GS and installed iOS5.  Since then, my phone crashes 2-3 times a day, it has a hard time find the cell networks (no 3G and says no network often), and eats up a fully charged battery overnight searching for connections.  Fixing my phone is now my number one use of my free time!  AT&amp;T store says I should just upgrade my phone.  This a software issue!  I upgraded to iOS5.01 and it seems to be no different.
My wife had similar issues with her iPhone3G and iOS4.  We made 3 trips to the Apple Store to do a deep recovery to bring it back to life.  They told us it was a hardware issue and we needed to buy a new phone.  iOS4.1 fixed all the problems and the phone worked great.
I guess I am in for the same ride And will hope iOS5.1 fixes my issues.  Apple PLEASE HELP!!!!!

  • Airport card not auto-connecting after adding WPA on router

    Hello;
I recently turned on WPA security on my previoiusly unsecure router (I had been using a MAC filter) and set up a password, etc...
Two laptops connect to this, my iBook G4 (powerPC), and a Sony Vaio. The Vaio remembers the password on reboot, but the iBook keeps forgetting it, as if somewhere it has the old settings still stored away...
Everytime I reboot I have to go into system preferences, network, and do a 'diagnotistics' to get it to find it, and add the password by going through 'closed networks' (otherwise it just tells me it failed to connect and never asks for a password).
Is there some way I can get it to remember the settings across reboots?
Where are the preferences stored so I can remove them and 'start over'?

Deleting the keychain with Keychain access worked.
I still can't click on options nor see preferred networks, but now the new keychain I made is finally staying around after reboot and auto connecting me to my home network.
Thank you for the help. I did accidentally delete ALL my keychains, but that's just as well as I probably had other clutter in there as well.

  • Problems auto-connecting after sleep & startup (Changed from WPA to WEP)

Okay, I know there have been several issues similar to this, but after two days of sifting through posts, I still can't resolve this.
A few days ago I switched my AirPort network security from WPA to WEP-128. This was required to allow my Nintendo DS to connect to the netwrok, by the way. After the change, two similar, but slightly different problems started:
My 15" PowerBook G4 no longer auto-connects to the network at startup. The network is listed in the drop-down, and connects with no problem when I choose it manually. The computer seems to have no problem re-connecting after waking from sleep, which is odd because...
My other PowerBook, a 12" G4, won't auto-connect at startup AND won't re-connect after sleep. As above, it has no problem connecting using the Keychain once the network is selected from the drop-down.
So far I have tried, on both machines:
    - trashing the system airport prefs
    - deleting and resetting the network's keychain entry
    - repairing the keychain (no errors found)
    - turning off some unneeded power mgt options
    - disconnecting USB peripherals
I have also reloaded the software on both my AirPort Extreme base and my AirPort Express hub, as well as restarting both hubs. I've also made sure that AirPort is at the top of the network connection list.
Both laptops are running 10.4.3 and have all the latest software updates installed.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks.

Both of these replies are helpful, in that they help confirm something I figured out this morning, almost accidentally.
One thing I didn't mention was that during the change from WPA to WEP I changed the network password. Now, I assumed that since the Keychain seemed to be working and I could get on the network manually without needing to enter the password each time, that meant the new password had correctly propagated throughout the system.
So, this morning I go into the Network settings, switch from Automatic to Preferred, select my network, look at the properties, and notice that somehow it has way too many bullets for that to be the correct password. I re-entered the password and that seems to have solved the problem. The new password I had entered somehow didn't make it into this setting. I guess trashing the network prefs, or renaming the network would have had the same effect.

  • Still stuck on the Apple after many restores - battery maybe?

Hi! Do you think that a battery might be a problem while my iPhone 3GS is still stuck on the Apple after many restores? Tried different computers, nothing works, but restore is completed. First if turned off while watching a movie. Tried to restore many times but got a lot of 1602s. Than on a different computer, finally worked, connected to iTunes but still stuck on the Apple. Don't know what to do anymore.

Here are some reasons for your 1602 error:
    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1600, 1601, 1602
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. This error may also be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.
If the phone has not been jailbroken, and given the age of the device, it could be a defective battery. Apple can fix that for you:
What is iPhone Battery Replacement Service?
If your iPhone requires service due to the battery's diminished ability to hold an electrical charge and it is not covered under Apple's warranty, an AppleCare service contract, or statutory consumer rights, Apple will service your iPhone for a service fee. Please see these simple pointers to maximize youriPhone battery life and lifespan.
Note: Your iPhone is not eligible for Battery Replacement Service if the product has been damaged, for example, as result of an accident, liquid contact, disassembly, unauthorized service or unauthorized modifications, or if the product is not operating correctly as a result of a component failure. Please review Apple's Repair Terms and Conditions for further details.

How much does iPhone Battery Replacement Service cost?
Service arranged through Apple costs $79. A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if this service requires shipping. All fees are in U.S. dollars and are subject to local tax.

I am posting on behalf of my very elderly (88 years) mother who moved house three weeks ago and has yet to get her BT broadband to work despite at least five calls to the hepline and a visit from the engineer, (it took ten days just to get the phone to work)
The engineer advised there was a small amount of connection but it needed a boost form the exchange? Which he was unable to do.
Next call to call centre advised boost was in progress and connection would resume in 1 hour. It didn't.
Please...What do we do next, my mother although elderly is very dependant on email for communication with family and this is causing great distress, she struggles with the call centre as she a little deaf. Is there a UK based help line as she may get on better with this, as all confidence and patience is now exhausted with usual 0800 number.
We must have wasted at least five hours on the phone to the call centre and have achieved nothing but frustration.
    Any advice welcome.

  • Guest Unable to connect after WLC upgrade

Just upgrade software on my WLC5508 from 7.0.98.218 to 7.3.112.0 via GUI interface.
The upgrade was successfully,I can login to WLC.The other 2 WLC also upgraded to the same version and works.
The only issue, for Guest Vlan user didt get IP address and web login page.
Then we decide to revert to old image and working normally
Do you have any suggestion how to troubleshoot it?

I seemed to stumble across a lot of bugs in 7.3 and 7.4 - your symptoms are similar to one I found.
Have a look at CSCua39580 - WebAuth Fails post upgrade to 7.2.110.0
If you have an anchor controller (it's not clear from your post) then the work around is run the main 5508 on 7.3 and the anchor on 7.2.
After working for many weeks with Cisco, they finally released an enginneering version of 7.3 on, or about, 22-Feb-2013.
Try searching for "Addendum Release Notes for Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers and Lightweight Access Points for Special Build 7.3.103.10"
I never did try this version as it would have required a costly MSE upgrade and I'd lost my Mojo for all things wireless by that point.

  • Netflix: am having problems with the iPad on it. Error box pops up and tells me 'safari cannot connect: too many redirects'. Also the iPad freezes on netflix. Advise needed. Thnx.

Whew, this is driving me nuts. I use the iPad for nearly all my online connection. Dunno why netflix is not working well on it lately; it used to work well enough.

We have the same problem with download interruptions in our app v32.
And in addition it seems that every interruption of download leaves some unused data on device. When we try to continue the download, it mostly fails at the same point. But with every attempt the application takes more and more device space. It goes so far that we have three- or fourtimes more device space in use that is the common size of app and downloaded content, although we actually still didn't download the whole content. (We try also download the same folio with Adobe Content Viewer and it does the same.)
Finally we open the content and force to download remaining articles one by one with moving across the content manually. Articles where download fails we downloaded as last. It wasn't without problems but we have success after many attempts. In the end the device space used by app with content was enormous! When we deleted all content, used space was decreased by the size of folio, but the unused data wasn't removed until the whole application was deleted from iPad. We send it as bug report to Adobe.
Now we are in very bad situation, because our clients can't download their paid content. (Most of them hasn't so big patience as we had with downloading content.)
So we hope that dev team figure out soon what is going on or we are finished.
