Finally upgrading to Leopard, need help

I need to know the best way to go about the following. I plan to do a "clean install" (Erase and Install) of Leopard on my iMac currently that currently has Tiger on it.
If I do an erase and install will this keep my boot camp windows partition in tact or will it erase the entire HD.
If I were to copy the entire Mac partition onto a firewire external HD can I use migration assistant to pull the programs and data off of the externald HD and avoid re-installing everything?
Any help will be appreciated. First one to answer in full gets a shiny new green star

Get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire), and make a bootable backup/clone before upgrading and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

BTW, I can't answer the bootcamp query. I don't do Windoze.

  • Mac Pro will not boot with Snow Leopard - need help!

I have had a lot of issues with Snow Leopard since I upgraded from 10.5.8. Most of my problems started after installing Office 2007. I finally wiped the hard drive and reinstalled everything. No problems until last week. Start up was taking longer and had to reboot a couple of times because of grey screen. So I would just put computer to sleep. Yesterday the computer was frozen on screen saver with scrambled rows of pixels on screen two and the main monitor had a frozen image.
I initially pulled all peripherals out and pulled the power plug for 5 minutes. I have left the peripherals out and pulled the second monitor as well. I tried pulling the power plug during a few more starts but nothing gets me to a complete start up screen.
I have tried resetting PRAM and VRAM and tried a safe boot. I tried booting from Snow Leopard and my Leopard disk stayed on either a blue or gray screen with spinning beach ball (on gray screen).
Put original install disk in and booted from using D to check the hardware. Good news is that the hardware test was OK. I did the extended test.
All different kind of start up problems.
    - Some start with start up sound goes to Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with beachball
    - Some start ups with no initial sound then Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with no cursor or beachball
    - Some start ups with no sound to gray screen to blue screen to grey screen.
I have no problem wiping the HD1 again but I can't even get the OS disk to be recognized with holding the C key during start up. This last time it went to a blue screen (holding the C key) and a cursor.
I don't know what else to do - Please help!!!

There are lists (MacIntouch and MacFixit) of hardware / software support issues with 10.6. Accelerateyourmac is another place to watch.
There were some really long threads back in Sept about printer driver support.
The 7300 firmware was more about Windows support; those cards are failing and dropping like flies (how DO they know 3 yrs has expired anyway?) and they don't support SL features like OpenCL etc so I'd invest in ATI 4870, best graphic card and works in all models Mac Pro.
Lots and lots of bootable clones for backup. Never need to wipe and install again.

  • HDV KGCore crash with Final Cut express 4 NEED HELP

I recently purchased a cannon hv30 hdv camera. This is my first time using High Def footage and I am now working on my first project with it. I have used Final cut express with a hard drive camera for over a year now and have made many projects with little problems. After importing my footage in the 1080i60 easy setup setting (around 63 minutes of footage) I began to add it to the sequence. after adding the first part I added the next imported section of hdv footage. The program then froze for a few seconds and crashed. It did this everytime I added the same clip into the sequence. sometimes the error said that kcgore plugin could be related. I called an apple rep and after getting rid of all 3rd party programs and reinstalling TWICE it still crashes after I recaptured the footage while I am either editing the footage or jsut playing it back. NEED HELP

Thanks I tried it again and it seems to be working but I crashed like once or twice when viewing the footage. But after starting it up again it is working fine it is jsut that the footage has these white flashes in it when playing back sometimes. I am not sure if it is going to crash again or not hopefully it is fixed. I was just using the hdv setting for 1080i60. Im not sure if it was pal or nstc I just used the basic hdv 1080i60 setting. also do you think I should upgrade my ram and memory? Would that help moving it up from a 1 gig to 2 or 4 when working wwith hd footage now?
    thanks again

  • I am a beginner at Final Cut Pro. Need help converting MPEG-2 to use.

I am a beginner at Final Cut Pro. I have mpeg-2 video footage that I am trying to import the footage into Final cut, but can't. I understand I need to convert the file format. I am unfamiliar with how to go about the converding file formats and the codec what is the best way to go about converting the file format so I can edit it on Final cut pro?

Where did the files originate? (How were they created?)
Some formats can be brought in with the help of plug-ins.
MPEG Streamclip can usually convert them to Quick Time.

  • 8830 4.5OS Upgrade Browser issuesm, Need help

Howdy! I'm a n00b here, first post looking for some help.
I discovered the 4.5 OS upgrade when I was searching to find out how to watch youtube videos. I went through the upgrade and everything seemed to work fine. I had my company put me back on the BES, so email is working fine.
When I tried the browser, I couldn't believe the huge improvement over the 4.2 OS. Of course, I immediately went to youtube to try that out and was impressed. However, when I went to check my hotmail acct I kept getting a HTTP Error 500: Internal Server Error. I did a search on this, and found the link to change from the BB browser to the IE browser. This didn't work, so like a fool I started changing all the settings to see what might work. I managed to screw it up to the point that no pages would load. I've continued to change some settings and can now get back into a couple of pages, but my hotmail still won't come up. I used to access my acct through msn mobile, then click on the little mail icon.
So, I'm thinking it would be good to first get the browser back to all the defaults. Anyone know where a list is of what boxes are checked originally and which options are defaulted in a clean install?
Or, maybe someone has already seen this?
Details: 8830 WE, OS 4.5.0.135(previous 4.2), Sprint, Unlimited Everything
     Let the n00b bashing begin!!
    Thanx

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You will need to play around with all of the Browser configuration and emulation settings to find the combination that works best for your circumstances. The nice thing about the device is that it provides the ability to do so. Take a step-by-step approach so that you make sure to try all configuration combination possibilities. It's pretty rare for there to not be a combination that works for what you need...but it does take time to go through all of the permutations.

I installed snow leopard and since then every time i open a word document on my Microsoft word (mac 2008), it crashes and does not open. i can open word and start typing a new doc, save it and then open that one and it works. but if i try to open a document that i created before snow leopard (regular leopard), it crashes right away. please help because i am a college student and i need to access my docs!!!

    Hi all--this worked for me:
    1. Uninstall Office using the Remove Office program.
    2. Remove (trash) the microsoft folder from the fonts folder. Then delete the word plist from your user library preferences folder.
    3. Run disk utility to repair permissions and restart.
    4. Run Snow Leopard cache cleaner and do a deep clean on the cache of your system.
    5. Run Easy Find to find "fontcachetool" (it's an invisiable file, so make sure you enable easyfind to locate invisible files. Trash the fontcachetool file once it's located. Note: I actually had two of these files, and I trashed them both.
    6. Restart.
    7. Run disk utility to repair permissions again, and restart.
    8. Install Office 2008.
    9. Do NOT open any Office programs, and restart.
    10. Install SP 1 (note: I installed this from a disk image. My previous attempts to use the automatic check for updates "feature" in Office to download and install the program did not work--believe me, I uninstalled and reinstalled Office three times before performing the tasks I am listing here. You can download the disk images of the SP here:
    SP 1 (12.1.0): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=395D1487-A3A6-4106-A0F8 -4D6E1D6D89D2&displaylang=en

    11. Restart
    12. Install 12.2.0. Restart.
    13. Install 12.2.1. Restart
    14. Repair permissions.
    15. Restart.
So far so good. I hope this helps.

I have a Power Mac G5 with an OS 10.4; what upgraces are available?

Leopard 10.5.8 is the last operating system a PowerPC Mac can be upgraded to.
    Everything else newer requires Intel.
The DVD for Leopard are getting expensive since Aple has stopped producing them.

  • Starcraft won't run in Snow Leopard, need help...

    Heya,
So, as many other users have posted across the internet, the original Starcraft and Starcraft Brood Wars don't run in Snow Leopard. I'm wondering if anyone has any leads on patches or solutions currently?
    I'm running:
    15" Macbook Pro
    10.6.2
    2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M & NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GT 265MB each.

    Thanks for the link!
Though that didn't help resolve my problem it did lead me to the solution.
I realized I was downloading the 1.16.1 patch instead of the OS X Native Installer for Mac. So once I downloaded that, my problem was solved. Though I did install Rosetta (Snow Leopard Disc -> Optional Installations -> Rosetta) but I don't think that was the issue.

  • I cant update my OSX from Tiger to Leopard, Need Help!

Hello and good afternoon guys. I'm on the brink of killing my Mac PPC. Here are my specs before i start to blabber:
G5 2.7ghz Duo PPC with 2gb Ram currently running 10.4.11 OSX
I had leopard 10.5.8 installed before but i downgraded to Tiger to fix some problem with my corrupt OS now when i try to upgrade to my 10.5.2 Leopard DVD after setup it gives me a "This software OSX cannot be installed on this computer" error.

Hi SaintPrado, and welcome to the forums!
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667
After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.
Also, Get Temperature Monitor - 4.51 to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994
"This software OSX cannot be installed on this computer" error.
What color is the Disc, Gray ones are Machine Specific... what are the 2z-***-***+A numbers on it?

  • Upgrading Problem. Need help ! T_T

    Hi everyone.
First off i would like to explain my situation. I own a iMac G4 (Tiger, 10.4.11) and my dad owns a iMac G5 (Leopard)
I was hoping to be able to upgrade my iMac G4 to leopard but i proved unsuccessful. Upon placing the Leopard disk that came with the iMac G5 into the iMac G4, an installation window appears. I managed to reach to the point where an option asks you to restart, and upon boot up it reverts to a leopard based window. From there, the installation stops and the installation comes to a halt. Another window appears, asking for another restart. I did so, but the same process continues. I realised the problem stops only after using 10.4.11 boot up option. After which, i came back to a tiger based window. ( which is back to square one )
Not sure where i have gone wrong during the installation. Or is it even possible in the 1st place to upgrade a iMac G4 using a tiger to leopard?
I hope to have your feedback. It will be much appreciated. Thanks a lot. (:

Hi messinger1 and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Firstly the disk won't work because it is specific to the G5.
Secondly even if it did work you'd be in contravention of Apple's End User Licence Agreement (EULA) that states that the software can only be installed on one machine unless a Family licence is paid for.
If you want Leopard on the G4 you'll have to buy a retail copy.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • Upgrading hard drive, need help!

I found a good deal on a hard drive at best buy, but I'm not sure it's right... I can't a model number on any of the mac specialty sites. Could someone check out my link and tell me if it will work and if it won't what I need to be looking for in the specs? Thanks. (the more opinions the merrier!)
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8354586&type=product&id=1176507039 848

I have just upgraded my iBook with the same hard drive.
The only issue, this happened when upgrading the hard drive on my iMac as well.
I have the MacOS 10.3 restore dvds for both computers. When you boot up from the DVD. Format the hard drive on Disk Utility. The Drive formats but isn't able to have the OS saved to it via installer. Leave your DVD loaded quit installer turn computer off. Turn on computer you can now save the OS to your hard drive.
Might be different with MacOs 10.4 restore DVDs

  • Upgrading Hard Drive need help with making it work.

I have just begun copying my HD to a 120GB 2.5" SATA drive.
I'm using Super Duper to copy it, and I understand it will be a bootable disk.
Once it has completed copying, is there anything I need to do to make it the startup disk ?
Do I make it the startup disk before I swap the hard drive out from within System Preferences ?
Also, it is currently called Disk 2 - Will that become the name of my HD (currently obviously called Macintosh HD)
If it is, can I then change the name ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

SuperDuper will make it a bootable disk if that's the backup option you selected. Look at the SD feedback information. It tells you what it will do and will then show the steps checking off each one as they are completed.
All you will need to do is remove the old drive and install the new one. It should be ready to go if you did everything correctly. This includes partitioning the new drive using the GUID partition scheme, setting the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and then Erasing the drive using the Zero Data option.
Be sure to test the cloned drive before installing by booting the computer with it while it's in the external case.
You can rename the drive anything you want.

  • Upgrading to SSD Need Help

    Hello,
I have a early 2011, 15" macbook pro and I want to remove my CD drive and put an SSD in its place. I would like to put all the apps and OS on it as well. I was wondering since I have an Adobe Suite and other purchased programs, would I it be possible to put all of those on the SSD or would I have to repurchase everything to put them there? I really dont want to lose my programs.
My computer has been running slow which is why I figured I need a new hard drive to make the OS faster again. When i purchased this computer I believe it started out with OS X 10.6 and then upgraded to 10.7 and now 10.8. I noticed that each time I would lose about 10 gb per update. It seems as if they just pile up on eachother without removing the old files. So to my question would it be worth it to completely back up my drive and on the new ssd have it restore from backup?
I am asuming with all the piling of OS's i should start out fresh but at the same time I dont want to lose my programs but if im going to upgrade to an SSD I want the speed bump from the SSD to apply to my programs.

No they don't pile up on top of one another. The OS X upgrades normally remove the older files the newer version uses and or Overwrite them. But as with everything an upgrade OS is usually bigger then the one it is replacing. 10GBs no but some GBs, 1-3.
As to the SSD I suggest you install it in the Main Bay and move your current Spinning HDD to the optical bay.
So have had problems getting a SSD to work correctly in the optical bay, other haven't but no one has had any problems installing the SSD to the main bay and the spinner to the optical bay. That is IF there are no hardware problems like a bad cable.

  • Reinstalled leopard, need help getting time machine to recover old document

    Hey,
I reinstalled leopard with completely deleting everything and reinstalling. I was planning to use time machine to restore my computer. Anyways, when I finally got to the point where it was done reinstalling and leopard was working, it asked me do you want to load from time machine, so I clicked it and it failed. But it said there was a way I could do this at another time. Does anyone know how I go about doing this so I can get all the stuff I backed up on time machine back onto my newly reformatted mac?

Thank you for asking. I solved my problem last night. I reloaded the system using the "erase and restore" option this time. Then, once I reached the Time Machine level, TM could see the old files. I did have to restore the files one area at a time. I could not launch a general system restore.
