Find a Pathname to an external drive

Hallo to you all!
I am using MAVERICKS on a Mac.
One of my disk-drives is an external drive (Promise), which is connected via Tunderbolt.
How can i find the complete, pathname (i will copy via terminal!) to copy files from my home-dir on the internal drive to a directory on the Promise-drive?
What is the pathname of the Promise?
Thanks for helping!
Ciao!

I think you would be able to create the VM on your MBA, then copy or move it to your USB drive.
From the VMware Fusion website features page:
"*Easily move your virtual machines*
*Your complete virtual machine is stored in a single, easy-to-manage package. Move your virtual machines to an iPod, another hard drive, or Mac simply by copying a file.*"
Just create the virtual machine on your Air, then move it to your USB drive. Make it small enough to fit on whatever USB drive you plan to use.
I'm not sure why you have to have the MBA external superdrive plugged in, but if you do, there will be no way to simultaneously use that USB drive. My Windows XP VM is 4gb but you should be able to create one smaller. It may be easier just to take the hard drive space hit...your VM should run a lot faster too, compared to running it from the USB drive.

  • -10810 Finder error with FW 400 external drive

I have an external drive with USB 2 and FW 400 connections. For years I've used it without any problems with the USB connection. Recently I've connected it using FW 400 and have repeatedly had the following problem:
I am using files on an external drive (Mac OS Extended, Journaled) with a FW 400 connection when suddenly both the application I'm using and the Finder hang. I pick Force Quit from the Apple menu and in the list the app and the Finder both show up as not responding. I can force quit the app at that point but when I try to force relaunch the Finder it kills the finder rather than relaunching it. If I try to launch it from the Dock I get an error saying "The application Finder can't be opened -10810." After about 5 minutes I get an error message saying that I'd improperly disconnected my FW drive without ejecting it first (even though I neither ejected it nor disconnected it). At that point, the Finder relaunches and everything seems fine, though the FW drive (still plugged in and turned on) is now gone and doesn't appear in Disk Utility. If I unplug and turn off the FW drive and then plug it in again and turn it on again it will mount. Then the app that I was originally using relaunches on its own. At that point I can quit everything, eject everything, and restart without difficulty. Disk Utility finds nothing wrong with the external drive.
Any idea what's going on and how to fix it?
Obviously I could just go back to USB but I want to know what's going on.
    Thanks!

Firewire 800 is fully backwards compatible with Firewire 400. You need a "bilingual" firewire cable or adapter to plug the Firewire 400 drive in your Firewire 800 port.

  • Using Finder to copy to an external drive

I need to copy my home directory using Finder to an external drive that I save in the safe as a backup.  Last month I spent 1 hour with Apple support to somehow achieve that and I wrote down the instructions. The support staff tried a variety of "approaches" that did not work so maybe I just didn't capture something correctly but I cannot repeat this very simple copy (in Windows, Ctrl-C from source, Ctrl-V to destination). Using Command instead of Ctrl on the Mac doesn't work w. Finder.
At this point I not only feel stupid but kind of desperate. There should be a simpler way to do this but I cannot figure out how Finder works or how to do it. Below are the instructions that I am trying to follow (as provided by the support staff), to copy my home directory called SF to a Seagate drive. Paste SF never shows up under Control/EDIT, as in step 4 under Destination....   I'd appreciate your help.
    1. Open Finder
    2. Click on “GO” on top menu bar
    3. Select Computer
    4. Click on Macintosh HD
    5. Click on Users
    6. Highlight the SF folder (do not click on it)
    7. Press the Control key while clicking on “EDIT” on the top menu bar
    8. Select COPY “SF”
    b. Prep destination
    1. In Finder, create new folder on Seagate Backup for Backup MM/DD/YY with subfolder for iMac with subfolder for SF (use File/New Folder after highlighting the top level=Seagate Backup and then highlighting and clicking on the lower level under which a subfolder needs to be created)
    2. Highlight the destination folder (SF on Seagate), do not click on it
    3. Press the Control key while clicking on “EDIT” on the top menu bar
    4. Select PASTE “SF"

  • Issue using  "Find" in Bridge to search external drive

When using "Find" in Bridge (version 2.1.1.9) in CS3 to search for files on an external hard drive I must either check "Include Non-Indexed Files" or go to the external drive and build the cache for the folders I want to search. Otherwise the files will not be found.
Having to build the cache in the external drive or use non-indexed search slows down the search process. Is there a way around this. Bridge preferences are set to "Automatically Export Caches to Folders". I use SyncBack for back up to the external drive.

Thank you for the reply. I thought that once the cache is built and exported to a folder, that folder would be indexed and ready for a search by Find. And when copying that folder to another drive the files would remain indexed and available to a search by Find on that drive.
I have not copied the central cache to the external drive. So I assume that when using Find to search the external drive it is looking at the caches in each folder on that drive.

  • ITunes wont find my music on my external drive (when it used to!)

I recently filled my PC's interntal harddrive with music to the point where it was so slow I had to to buy an external drive to keep it on. I tranferred all my music on to the hard drive and have had no problems with it until today.
Today, I started iTunes BEFORE I turned on my external drive meaning that iTunes could not find any of the music in my library.
This was OK at first, as I could just search within my My Music Folder to locate the odd tunes I wanted to export to my iPod.
However, now whenever I select a song from my library (even with the external drive powered up) I have to go and search for each individual file. I get the little exclamation mark next to the track and the following message:
"The song 'XXXXXX' could not be used because the orginal file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
I then have to search My Music folder to find the tune. This is OK once or twice but I dont want to have to do this for 40Gb. HAs anyone else had this problem?
Is there a faster/better way to find my music and get iTunes to locate it without me having to import all the folders again?
BTW my I've just noticed that my I haven't changed my original iTunes folder location from my internal C drive to my external E drive. Will this make any differences?
    Cheers

PC Windows XP SP2 AMD Athlon 2600 Sapphire Radeon x800 pro 256

Hi I did try that as, in the past, that used to work. My harddrive was already powered up so I closed iTunes and then reopened it. But, I had no joy. I noticed that my default path for the itunes folder was for my old C drive so I have changed that to my E drive now. Thanks.
However, I fear I may have made matters worse. I followed advice from elsewhere and have been tampering gulps My new situation is as follows:
I have moved the default iTunes folder to my external (G) drive. I have placed all my music into my iTunes folder on my (G) drive <External HDrive (G:)/My Music/iTunes/>. If I browse these folders I can see all my music files.
I then selected all the music in iTunes with an exclamation mark and cleared it (not to the Recycle Bin!). I was told by a friend that if I then went into iTunes/Edit/Preferences/General and then ticked "Keep iTunes folder organised" iTunes would then find all my music in the iTunes folder.
    However, this has not happened
So, as it stands, I have 40gb of music in my iTunes folder and I would like to see it in iTunes but can't find a way to do this without importing every single folder via the File/Add folder to library option.
If anyone cal tell me how to get my music back into iTunes I will be most appreciative. Thanks
BTW - I am not going to do anything else to those folders until I hear from anyone else just in case I make an even bigger mess of things.

  • Lightroom 3 not finding my images on new External Drive I copied them in the MAC finder..bad I know

I recently bought a larger external drive and did a copy of all my files, including my catalog, via my MAc finder..I know now this was a clumsy way to do things.
I don't want to go through another copy session within LR.lotsa files.
I've done "find missing photos" but now I don't have a clue as to what to do.
Right clicking doesn't show anything relevant.
    Sort of stuck..help?
    Thanks,
    Pete

None of that right clicking was working...except for "find missing images"//which it did..but then I had a collection of "missing images" and had no clue what to do with them
Last night before I went to bed I decided to change the name of my new external drive to the exact same name as the drive I copied the images from....and it worked perfectly. Lightroom grabbed everything and I was running again.
Im a bit uneasy about that solution tho..

  • ITunes cannot find music files, confuses inodes, external drive

I have all my music on an external drive, which is not always connected to the Mac. When I start iTunes w/o the hdd connected iTunes occasionally marks some of the songs as not found. Which is ok so far. BUT if it finds the same inode (of the original file on the external hdd) on the internal hdd it changes the location of the songs to the internal hdd. In my case to files like /Previous System/<some path>/Info.plist. So iTunes thinks the files are still there and cannot play them. After deleting all the Previous Systems files iTunes marks all those files as not found, that is, it does not search for the inode on the external hdd again. Very confusing.
Yesterday I started from scratch with an empty iTunes Library (I moved the original one) and the problem reoccurred instantly after I imported all my music, quit iTunes, disconnected the external HDD and started iTunes again. So some of my songs are lost, iTunes will never find them again w/o me reimporting them. Also the problem might occur anytime in the future and I seem to not be able to cure it, because iTunes tried to be intelligent. But how it can confuse inodes w/o looking at the device ID and why the songs did not return after I removed the /Previous Systems folder I cannot image.
I checked the inodes on the internal and external hdd for some of the songs and they were indeed identical. So iTunes seems reset the path/location in the Library DB if it can find the inode of a song which it cannot find by path. Why it does not look at the device id in combination with the inode# is a mystery.
    Some additional details:
iTunes Music Folder Location: on external hdd
The Library files are on the internal hdd at ~/Music/iTunes.
I hope someone can answer that. I do not want to start from scratch every week. I hope my iPod which holds all the songs synchs meta info like play count and rating back as well.
    Kind regards, soryu2.

    And further....
I went into iTunes to try to download all my purchased music.  Some, but not all, is showing up under iTunes>iTunes Media>Music.  It looks like the library thinks some if the music is there, but it actually is not.
Seems like my library is corrupted (or something).
Since I have to upload all music from CD anyway, should I delete my iTunes library and start over, first by downloading all purchased music.

  • Finder does not display my external drives as devices

When connecting my Kindle 2 to my imac (Lion), the kindle does not come up in Finder as an external device.  However, I know it's there because when I pull up Disk Utility, there it is as a 3.24 GB Kindle Internal Storage Device.
As a matter of fact, none of my external drives show...I have a MyBook and anothers external hard drive connected for backups (all show in DU as well).
I checked Preferences in Finder and Hard Disks and External Disks are both checked to "Show these items on sidebar" but do not display.
    What am I missing here?
    Thanks,

Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Can't find recently added music on external drive shared library

My wife and I have separate user accounts on our desktop Mac. The iTunes prefs point both users to the same file on an external drive for our music. I recently imported some CD's under my user and then attemtped to update my wife's iPod under her user so she could listen to the music. The added music does not show up in the library. I've never had this happen that I can recall. Has some update to iTunes changed how this works?

Thanks for the suggestion Limnos but you're right that's not the answer...
iTunes Match allows 25,000 songs so I don't think apple see 20,000 as outside the design parameters.
Anyway I'll wait in hope that someone can offer a solution to the path that Finder uses for each different connection as that's where the answer lies, that or a way to change the path of the server in iTuens, but all the forums I have looked at suggest you can't do that?

  • ITunes doesn't find my music files on external drive anymore

I have some 15.000 music files on an external hard drive. I added them to my iTunes library and added also a lot of extra info (titles, genres, albums covers, etc.).
After a great New Year's Party, where several people "played" with my iTunes playlists, for some reason iTunes doesn't sees / recognises the music files on the external hard drive anymore.
What can I do? I don't want to import the music files all over again. Otherwise I loose all the info I added in the past year. And it is undoable to find the music files one-by-one on the external drive. That would take months.
    Who can help?

Select one track in your library that is currently missing in action. Press CTRL-I to Get Info then look at the Where: entry on the Summary tab. You should get something along the lines of:
    file://localhost/<path 1>/<Artist>/<Album>/## <Name>.<ext>
    e.g. file://localhost/D:/iTunes/iTunes Music/Arcade Fire/Funeral/01 Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels).mp3
The true path will be something else of the form:
    <path 2>\<Artist>\<Album>\## Name.<ext>
    e.g. D:\iTunes\iTunes Music\Music\Arcade Fire\Funeral\01 Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels).mp3
Comparing the two paths should reveal what needs to be done to put music back where iTunes "expects" to find it. The examples show the different default locations before and after the upgrade to iTunes Media Organisation. I've seen problems before with the way iTunes manages this upgrade so that it occasionally reorganizes the files but then carries on looking for them in the old location. It is also surprising how easy it is sometimes to accidentally move a folder without noticing. Alternatively Windows may simply have switched the drive letter for your external drive. Windows Media Player is more resilient in these circumstances.
If you can give the two locations for a sample file I can probably suggest what will need doing to put things right.

  • Itunes can't find my music on an external drive

Hi...new user here. I have 75G of tunes on an external usb hard drive and just synced with my new classic. All went well. Have since disconnected/reconnected the HD a few times and now itunes can't "see" the HD. Have made sure the path is correct in itunes and actually re-set the path and set it again. The itunes message it get is "the song can not be played as the original file could not be found, do you want to locate it".
I can play a playlist from itunes but not the list of all tunes.

If you try to start iTunes with the external drive disconnected, iTunes will default back to the internal drive.
DO you know if you have your iTunes folder containing the library files on the internal drive or the external drive.
If the iTunes folder that you are using is on the internal drive then you need to set the location of the iTunes Music folder with Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced.
IF you had your iTunes folderon the external drive, hold down the shift key and start iTunes. Keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.

  • ITunes cannot find my music on my external drive

I followed the instructions I found here to move my iTunes music folder and consolidate my library to my external hard drive, but accidentally trashed the Library file with the music from my internal hard drive when I was trashing the existing iTunes files on my internal drive. All my music and library files are on the external drive, but when I tried copying the Library and Library.xml files back to my internal drive's Music folder, iTunes doesn't recognize them and none of my music appears.
How do I fix this? Help!

I actually have the same issue... only i did not follow the instructions, i copied the entire itunes folder from my home drive to my external drive then I deleted the home drive itunes folder. I then uodgraded to leopard and although my external drive has itunes folder with all the playlists itunes does not display my music, videos, etc

  • Finder freezes when accessing an external drive

I have been using WD 3TB green drives in docks for storage for years. For the last 6 months occasionally I will access one of the drives and the finder freezes up, I will then need to restart the computer. When I try to mount my drive I get a "The disk inserted was not readable by this computer". I do not want to loose the data so I will not initialize the drive. Disk Utility will not even recognize the drive nor will Disk Warrior. In order to save the data I need to use a recovery software. I use Ontrack EasyRecovery Home, it works great but is taxing on the computer and takes a lot of time. So does anybody know why this is happening? Is it a problem with my computer or the manufacturing of the drives?
Probably a coincidence, but this has only happened to the WD green drives since they changed the packaging from green to yellow.

Remove maudio, specifically that com.maudio.usb.fasttrackpro.driver.  If you just move that out of /System/Library/Extensions (or if there is an installer) you need to reboot after adding/deleting kext's.
If no software was installed by you then somehow that external got that com.seagate.SeagateStorageGauge.plist installed in your /Library/LaunchAgents.  If the maudio removal doesn't change anything then this segat launchagent is the next to go.
