In Access you can have a drop down box on a form position in the file on a drop down list as you type. HTML DB does this as well but only with the first character. When you type a second charater it repositions to start at the second charater.

Disabling "find-as-you-type"

I love Firefox, and I would even be OK with "find-as-you-type" ordinarily, but here's what happens: it finds the succession of letters as I type, but it cuts off the search as soon as it finds it - when I haven't finished what I wanted to type.
For instance, this site: http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/06/14/kyrgyz.violence/index.html?hpt=Sbin. Say I wanted to see if the word "strategically" were on the site. You hit control-F, then start typing s-t -- and it interrupted me and found the "st" in Kyrgyzstan. But you couldn't keep typing r-a-t-e-g- .... because it interrupted the search. Sure you could hit return and find all the other instances of s-t, but that's not all that helpful! Apparently you have to type your word ridiculously fast. Or, if you were interrupted, drag your mouse back over and continue typing fast in the Find bar again.
Anyway, how can I disable this? All I want is to be able to type the full succession of letters that I'm interested in before it finds it. So I don't need to type "strategically" to find the word, but I want at least to be able to type "strate-" without having to type at a 150-words-a-minute pace. Thanks!

You are certainly not describing the normal behaviour of the find bar, which is to stay focused the entire time you're typing in it, with the matches being updated and scrolled to on-the-fly as you type.
See if the behaviour still happens in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode#How_to_start_Firefox_in_Safe_Mode Firefox's own safe mode], if not you'll need to find the culprit extension causing the problem by disabling half of them from Tools -> Add-ons, "Extensions" then restarting Firefox to see if the problem still happens, and continue halving/restarting/testing until you've found it.

I can't use my apostrophe in gmail b/c it's always recognized as a "find as you type" shortcut. How do I turn that off?

I have a form with several drop-down lists. I'd like users to have the option of typing into the box and jump to the entry they are looking for, as opposed to scrolling through the list.
I've found nothing within livecycle to enable this feature.

How can I disable "search as you type" in Finder windows?

I have used OS X since it first came out and have upgraded to each version since then. I am now on Lion. I have endured "search as you type" for as long as it has been a "feature" and I must say that I am fed up with it, mainly because it slows me down. It makes the computer "get in my way," which is the very anathema Steve Jobs sought to destroy with Apple. My Mac should be a friendly tool that doesn't get in my way. Most of the time it is, but not when it comes to Finder searches.
Toward that end I wish to disable "search as you type" (or whatever the offical name for it is). More specifically, I want to disable it in the search bar in the upper right corner of Finder windows.
I don't care about the Spotlight menu in the menubar, as I never use that and don't want to train myself to use it. And I refuse to use an alternative search utility to Spotlight. I want to use the search field in the upper right corner of Finder windows, AND NOTHING ELSE. But at the same time, I want to kill "search as you type." I want to be able to type as fast or slow as I like and have my computer not search for anything at all until I hit RETURN. I don't want to argue about it. That is the way I want it. And again, I don't want to use a 3rd part utility, no matter how glorious some people may say they are because I stubbornly want to use the search bar atop every Finder window EXCLUSIVELY.
Therefore, is there some Terminal hack to accomplish this feat? If so, what is it?

Having posted the initial question more than 1 week ago now, I must say that I am quite shocked and dismayed that not a single experienced individual among us in these forums has the knowledge to even approach my question! Not even a reply to say "it cannot be done"! Forgive me for being brash. But is everyone on vacation? Or does no one know? Or is everyone truly apathetic toward the existing functionality?
If our computers were so lightning fast that "search as you type" was instantaneous (i.e., displayed results a 50ms or so, and faster than I could notice such that my fingers were not slowed down at all as I type), I wouldn't have taken time to write about this. But I put forth the initial question because of the inherent slowness of "search as you type" and therefore I wish to know how one would go about disabling it on an OS level (i.e., without having to resort to a third party app).

Select the text, and open the Appearance palette (Come on guys, text highlight is irrelevant, it happens to objects too says the OP), and see what's listed there. For a simple text object, there should only be a line item "Type", followed by "Characters", and when double-clicked the Characters line item expands to tell you the stroke and fill color. For a basic object, there should be a fill and/or stroke.
What happens sometimes, is that you end up adding extra strokes/fills to objects or text, and the appearance palette is where that will be noted. Especially when you are dealing with groups, and/or picking up a color with the eyedropper, you may inadvertently be adding a fill or stroke on top of something. You can drag those unwanted thingies from the Appearance palette into its own little trash can.

only way is to restore the phone as new. OR wait until IOS 7 comes out in the fall.

I don't think that is possible. You can manually arrange them, but there is no ability to automatically do it.
