Find/change dialogue box in indesign CC

Last week, i pasted a full sentence in the "change to" dialogue, and since then the entire find/change box has increased in size, taking up approximately 2/3 of the width of my screen. there is no obvious way to manipulate the shape or size of this dialogue box, so i am completely at a loss as to what to do. any advice?

this seems to have fixed the problem. thank you.

  • Has anyone experienced text going missing after using Change All in the Find Font dialogue box?

    I manage an artwork production studio and two members of staff have separately reported that when using the Change All command to substitute fonts in InDesign's Find Font dialogue box, some text disappears from their documents. All affected text is originally set in the same font, and most of the conversion is fine but a few instances of text are actually removed (not reflowed). In the latest reported case, only four or five instances of text were 'deleted' across two pages of a 20pp document.
    I've found a link that refers to the same issue but it's unresolved (http://www.listsearch.com/InDesign/Thread/index.lasso?20041#last)
    I haven't been able to replicate this behaviour but would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced it and if so, under what circumstances it can occur, and what work-rounds or fixes are available.
    Applies to InDesign CS3 and CS4, have not tested with CS5 because we haven't upgraded yet.

    Joel, I am having the same problem you described. I have read of similar posts on PrintPlanet.com. Someone there thought it was a different text engine or something in CS4 which may be causing the problem.
    I don't know what causes this but I believe it can be traced to a previously created file in CS3 is saved as a CS4 document.
    The fonts associated with this problem for me are always Gill Sans, Palatino and some form of Helvetica. There may be others but these are the ones we notice the most.
    Today I worked on an InDesign CS4 file. When I opened it I was given a missing font warning. I went to Find Font and it was different typefaces of Gill Sans that was missing. When I changed the missing font to Gill Sans Regular entire lines of text disappeared. I closed the document without saving it and reopened it. I did the same thing in replacing fonts. This time no text disappeared. Not reflowed; not white; not hidden—gone.
    This is what I have been seeing for the past few months. The disappearing text is random and cannot be duplicated, though fonts may disappear in some other place. You never know where text will just disappear.
    The workaround I have found is to export your file to an INX document and reopen it in CS3. You have to replace all missing text before saving it as INX, though. To my knowledge CS3 has never had this happen.
    The workaround, though it works for me, is annoying. I'd like to know what to do to resolve this issue. What's the use in having CS4 if you can't trust it completely.
    I use a Mac running 10.6.3. I also have running Suitcase Fusion 2.

  • Find/change dialog box out of reach

    Hi, I’m unable to use the find/change dialog box; it’s out of reach!
    Even when I try to change the resolution of my screen, I still can’t get a grab at it

    I tried changing the resolution (see the two screen capture), but not trashing the preferences; will try that!

  • Wrong Button Name in Find/Change-Dialogue

    The button "Find/Change" in the Find/Change-Dialogue has a wrong name. Its behaviour is just the opposite: First it changes, then it searches again. The correct name can only be: "Change/Find".
    (This is part of the Wishlist already and published elsewhere.)

    Ok, I was to quick, sorry. I did not check the english version. I was talkin about the german version. So it is clear: The english version is correct, the german localisation is wrong. This is one of the many, many translation errors of the German Version.
    Is there anybody out there at Adobe who is able to take in such hints regarding the german version? I could collect all and send them in german (!).

  • Spelling - Dialogue Box Issue - InDesign

    Hello all - I have an issue with the Dialogue Box for my spelling (spell check) feature in InDesign (CS4 - 6.0.4 - Mac - 10.6.2).
    When I'm in a document - select Spelling - I get a dialogue box that looks like this
    I've dumped the preferences - nothing!
    If anyone can help with this - muchly appreciated.

    How did you "dump the prefs"? Instructions for doing it successfully are here: Replace Your Preferences

  • [AS] How to express "Selection" within Search drop down menu in Find/Change Dialogue?

    I want to set the Search>Selection with AppleScript, how to express them in AS?
                        set selection of find grep preferences to true
    isn't working...
    help me

    It works the other way around -- you don't 'select' the target for replacement, you act on an object. To change text in a document, you would use
    app.activeDocument.changeText();
    and similar for textFrames, stories, paragraphs, or -- indeed -- any selected text:
    app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = null;
    app.findTextPreferences.findWhat = 'e';
    app.changeTextPreferences.changeTo = '!';
    app.selection[0].changeText();
    This is Javascript, by the way, but you might find it translates easily to AppleScript as the underlying model is the same.

  • Confirm Application Change Dialogue box

    I opened my MacBook just now and got a Keychain message:
    SystemUIServer has been updated. Do you want to allow the new version to access the same keychain items as the previous version.
    I understand what it's asking - what I don't understand is why because I haven't made any changes in well over 2 weeks since my last apple update. What is the SystemUIServer and would it just update something out of the blue?
    Or is this a virus?

  • Find/Change Keyboard Shortcut

    Hello!  Pages like this (  http://www.nobledesktop.com/shortcuts/indesigncs5/pc/  ) seem to imply that various functions of the "Find/Change" Dialogue box can be assigned keyboard shortcuts, such as "Replace selected text with Change To text and Find Next" (i.e. "change/find").
    However, the only one I can locate on my Mac for CS5.5 is "Find Next" (OPT++F).
    Can anybody help me?

    I've done that, but all I can find are these:
    Type & Tables: Character --- Default: Cmd+T
              Type & Tables: Conditional Text --- [none defined]
              Type & Tables: Cross-References --- [none defined]
              Type & Tables: Glyphs --- Default: Opt+Shift+F11

  • Script for running multiple find/change queries

    Working on a large ID book document (*.indb), I have saved several dozens of Find/Change Queries (named "col01", "col02" etc.) that I run on "All documents". For a particular reason I have to run these queries several times a day.
    So I was wondering whether there is, or whether anybody out there would write, a script that runs these queries one after the other. Given the size of the book, it might be necessary to provide for the script to pause after each query is run (before it goes on with the next), but I am just guessing.
    Any help is much appreciated!

    There are a couple of others:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5173943#5173943
    this is more at code level rather than a GUI, but the actual queries are made using the Find/Change dialog box.
    Also
    http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/grep_query_manager.html
    This is good too, but only does GREP searches (no text, glyph or object find/replaces) that were written by the user - does not use the ones installed with InDesign. Does allow changes by selection, story, document or folder.
    Did try the Doquerylist suggested by Kasyan. This allows GREP/text changes by the user/installed with InDesign, but only applies to a selection or text-thread.
    Always good to have more than one way of accomplishing a task though!

  • Find / Change Replace "End of story" by Paragraph

    Hi tehre,
    I tried unsuccessfully to find out how to manage to put a paragraph to the end of story to the multiple textframes automatically. There must be some way! Am I right?
    Thank you!

    Hi Scott,
    See the IMG please to understand me more:
    Each textframe  has the "#" hidden character on the very end. I want to put there a paragraph to the very end of each textframe I selected. I imagined something like this:
    Open "Find / Change" dialog box
    Find the "#" {End of Story}
    And replace it by "¶ #" {Put the paragraph before the very End of Story}
    I am merging multiple textframes, copy them and put the text to the different indd document. But if there is not a paragraph on the end of the textframes which I am merging, all the text joins together and I have to put paragraphs manually there afterwards. {I am merging 4 textframes into one, so i have to put there at least 3 paragraphs. I have 350 items, which means about thousand paragraphs together to be put manually.}
    Runnig ID CS6.
    Thank you!

  • Finding hidden dialog boxes (aka alert boxes)

    (note: most commonly the issue I describe below happens when the coding application CODA looses contact with one of my servers and an alert box informs me of this. I cannot continue using CODA until I click ok in the dialogue.)
    I use spaces a lot but when one of the applications I am using throws an alert while I am in a different "space" the alert ends up behind other windows that I am currently viewing (like Firefox or finder). Normally expose would make it easy for me to find these dialogue boxes, but it seems that not all modal windows appear when using expose. I thought that making the application responsible for the dialogue box active might bring the alert to the foreground but that is not true either. I have resorted to going space-by-space and moving windows out of the way until I find the alert box - highly annoying and time consuming.
    Is there a quick way to find these alert boxes and/or restrict them to the space that the parent application is living in? Anything to make this less tedious?

    @baltwo ... my question is not about why I am getting the alert (I know why and it happens at appropriate times (ex. when I have no internet connection)) but rather how can I more easily find the alert box when it does appear. It's terrible to go space-by-space moving windows around just to find a dialogue box...

  • Reference saved query in Find/change script?

    I want to use the find change script included with InDesign but I want to reference my saved queries. The reference for this script doesn't explain how to do this but this seems like the best way to run several queries in a row.
    The Find Change script refrences a text document that tells it what to find and change.
    Thanks
    Jesse

    From the Help (with quite a lot of searching):
    b Application
    void loadFindChangeQuery (queryName: string, searchMode: SearchModes)
    Loads the specified find/change query.
    queryName string The query to load.
    searchMode SearchModes: TEXT_SEARCH
    GREP_SEARCH
    GLYPH_SEARCH
    OBJECT_SEARCH
    I sort of gathered it should be under Application, and so it was. And in hindsight, with a logical name as well! Didn't even know ID could do this.
    The ESTK2 does not supply code snippets, but I'm sure you can work it out from this :-)

  • What happened to Find/Change Special Characters

    I am a recent update from FrameMaker 9 to FrameMaker 11. I use many notations with non-breaking hyphens and non-breaking spaces. In version 9 I was able to use the hex codes in the Find/Change dialog box and find and replace those notations. Now in version 11, it does not find those characters. I end up finding more than I want.
    For Example: I want to find
    (E-Vote Sept. 12, 2008)
    This text has a non-breaking hyphen and the spaces shown are non-breaking also. When I entered these characters into the document, I used "Esc hyphen h" key sequence for the hyphen and "Control+space" for the spaces.
    When I enter "(E\x15Vote\x10Sept.\x1012,\x102008)" and press the Find button, FrameMaker converts the text to "(E\+Vote\s#Sept.\s#12,\s#2008)" and returns with a statement "Not Found." I get the same error if I copy the text and paste it into the Find/Change Dialog box. I have tried this with the "Consider Case," "Use Wildcards" and the "Whole Word" checks both off and on. I can't get it to find it.
    Honestly, I never noticed if verstion 9 did the conversion, from \x15 to \+ and \x10 to \s#, in the Find/Change dialog box because it always found what I was looking for.
    I hope someone can tell me how to fix this because this is a function that I use all the time in FrameMaker. I use non-breaking hyphens and spaces all over my documents.
    I have also reported this as a bug because that is what if feels like to me. I did go out and updated my installation of FrameMaker, thinking that this may have been reported and fixed already.
    One Sad FrameMaker User
    Chris

    Chris,
    That's odd. It (dialog-box codes) works for me on my systems:
    Using the dialog-box codes works perfectly. The unicode values for the non-breaking space (nbsp = \u00A0) and non-breaking hyphen (\u2011), however, aren't working. It looks like the wrong glyph is being substituted in both cases.
    This is definiely a bug when doing a unicode-value search.

  • Finder changes the file name in Save/Save As dialogue box

    Whenever I save or save as a file, the dialogue box opens, but when I make the file list active when using a mouse, the file name I click to changes the file name I am saving. I simply want to activate the file list window so I can find the right folder. For example if I am looking for a folder called "Receipts" I want to be able to click on the file list window to activate it and then type the first 2 letters of the folder-- "re" and then save the file in that folder. The finder keeps changing the name of the current file whenever I click on one of the "greyed-out" file names? This doesn't make sense unless of course I want to replace that file.
    Is there a shortcut that makes the file list window in the dialogue box active while in the SAVE/SAVE AS dialogue box??

    Yes, this example of horrible UI design has been a problem since "Panther". It illustrates what happens when you try to copy UI behaviour from another OS, do it poorly, and end up with a mess. In 10.3 and 10.4, the combination of the renaming behaviour with the default "replace" selection in the resulting save can result in data loss.
    Compared to the old Mac OS where a tab would flip the focus between the text field for the file name and the file browser, the current behaviour either doesn't allow enough keyboard access to controls, or with "full access" enabled, too many to cycle through easily. The inability to switch focus to the file browser using the mouse (depending on the view) is a horrible productivity loss. Having to recheck the filename before saving is a horrible productivity loss. Since there is no "undo" for the renaming in most files, having to retype the name is again, a horrible productivity loss.
    If they had done it right (a simple change, like requiring a modifier to rename), users would probably welcome the "rename" feature as a useful addition. Instead, it has the feel of something a junior Windows-trained programmer slipped in past their supervisor.
    In short, I am not aware of any workaround or hack to avoid this "renaming" behaviour. I doubt it will do any good since people have been doing so since "Panther", but you could try submitting feedback:
