Find command doesn't work

The find command F or just Find doesn't work any ideas on fixes? I tried trashing kybrd and finder prefs. This is on a G3 running 9.2
Thanks

Hi, Bookalaka -
If Sherlock, or an alias to it, is not in the Apple Menu Items folder (in System Folder), then the Find function (Command-F) will not work. If that is the case, replace that item - move either Sherlock itself, or place an alias to it, into the Apple Menu Items folder.
Note - if you use Internet Explorer, and want to be able to use the supplemental toolbar icon for Sherlock, then Sherlock itself must be placed in the Apple Menu Items folder (IE does not recognize an alias to it).
If for some reason you are missing Sherlock completely, you can replace it fairly easily. Look in the System Folder on any OS 9.1 or later Install CD; you'll find it in the Apple Menu Items folder. Just copy it to your hard drive.

  • Find/search doesn't work in Finder - help!?

I go into finder and I type in a file name to search my computer for. No matter what volume or folder I select, nothing pops up in the search window - no files, no folders, nothing. Finder just sits there. The find command doesn't seem to work. Can anyone help me fix this? I really need to find files on my computer and don't have time to sift through every folder one by one. Thanks!!!

    Hi, Todd —
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'll assume that you're talking about using Spotlight via the Finder »» Find (⌘-F) command. If I'm wrong about this, please post back to clarify the specifics.
If nothing at all can be found, it's possible that you have inadvertently included your HD (or a significant Volume, your Documents folder, etc.) in the Privacy tab of Spotlight's preferences — which keeps it from being indexed. If the "metadata" associated with a file or folder aren't included in the indexing, they can't be searched and included in results.
To check this, look first in System Preferences »» Spotlight »» Results — are any of the boxes checked? Only those that are will be searched. Are they in the order you'd like to see results reported? Next, look in System Preferences »» Spotlight »» Privacy. Does anything appear in this window? Anything that does will not be indexed, and thus won't be included in a search. If it is the Volume (or folders, etc.) that you want to be searched, select its name and click on to remove it.
Spotlight will then begin to index whatever had been set as "private" — which essentially means "don't search." Note that this may take some time. The Spotlight icon at the far right side of your menu bar will show a tiny "pulsing" dot while indexing is ongoing.
You may want to go to Finder »» Help »» Mac Help, type in "Spotlight find," and hit return. Several useful articles on this subject will appear that will help to explain this. Here is a list of corresponding Apple "Help" articles online.
    Does this help?
Please post back to share your progress, and discuss other possibilities, as appropriate...

  • Visually handicap, needs to increase font size in logic pro, Command  doesn't work

    Hi,
I'm visually handicapped, and new to logic-pro.  I'm having a miserable time reading the internal logic-pro fonts.  Command + doesn't work, and I can't find any preferrence or settings options that affect the default font sizes, any ideas?

Unfortunately you cannot change the font size of the main fonts in Logic...
However, there are a couple of other settings you may not be aware of...
    1) Under Logic Pro's preferences... go to Display
Now you can change the size of the playhead and Local Windows under the General Tab
You can increase the size of the Logic plugin windows/fonts sizes under the Mixer Tab (I have mine set to 200%)
Note: This setting does not apply to 3rd party plugins.. only Logic's own plugins...
Under the Piano Roll tab you can change the size of Bar/Beats/Division Lines...
    2) Using the screen zoom command... Hold down control and scroll on your mouse... will zoom in the screen...
Note: as you are using Mountain Lion there is also a new setting under System Preferences/Accessability
Choose Zoom on the left hand side
Now choose Zoom Style/Picture in Picture and instead of a full screen zoom it provides you with a magnifying glass of sorts to just magnify the area arund your mouse pointer. I find this setting very useful....
    Hope this helps...

  • HT1338 Safari Hide command doesn't work

Now my Safari 6.0 "Hide Safari" command doesn't work (whether clicking the command-H or going up under the Safari menu and down to the Hide Safari command.
Any suggestions anyone? I am about one more issue away from abandoning Safari altogether and just using Chrome and Firefox.

I've made a number of iWeb websites. I notice that I can't "Command +" the text larger or smaller. Is this a function of an iWeb site .. or is there something I'm missing?
What browser are you talking about? If Safari, is it the same with the other major browsers (Firefox and Opera)? Could you provide the url of an example?

  • Bash command doesn't work after update

I just ran pacman -Syu as normal, but some got many errors like below:
    ( 3/11) upgrading binutils
error: command failed to execute correctly
and every package except kernel-headers got a error message like that. and then i found most of my bash command doesn't work any more, just like ls and vim. However, some others like pwd and cd still work correctly.
    Any one any ideal?

    Yes.
I've done that before and got into the same problem when updating glibc, the lesson here, don't mess with the default directory structure.

  • Unhide library command doesn't work

Unhide library command doesn't work in terminal

Open the Terminal application in your Utilities and paste the following at the prompt:
    sudo chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed.
The "sudo" may not even be required, but if it is and you don't use it, then you'll get an error message. Just try again using the above command.

  • Restart command doesn't work

I believe the following problem began when I updated to 10.4.9. I can't be absolutely sure but the timing seems about right. I've since updated to 10.4.10 in an effort to fix it, but haven't succeeded.
The problem is that when I select the Restart command in the Apple menu the computer will begin the process, all open apps will be quit, the finder will quit, my desktop will go to blue to a few seconds. Then the monitor will go blank. Then nothing after that. I DO NOT get the startup chime. The machine is still powered on, the light above the power button is still lit. If I leave the machine for any length of time the fans will start speeding up gradually until they're at full tilt. After 4 or 5 minutes it becomes obvious that nothing is going to happen, so I need to manually shutdown via the power button.
Does anyone know what logs I can post here to help in the diagnosis? This also happens if any installer application needs to perform a restart, ie Software Update.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi chris catalano-
I have had updates make my machine do some crazy stuff just as you describe. I would actually let it go for 15 or 20 minutes before declaring it a no-go.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the SMU and see if that helps: How to reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)

  • Exit Command doesn't work

Guys, I've put a few hours researching the web for code examples on how to program the Exit button on a J2ME app. It didn't help me finding out why my Exit simply doesn't work. It must be something trivial that I'm just not aware of. I would really appreciate your help analyzing the following code.

  • Tabsontop console command doesn't work any more since v29.0.1

I used to be able to put the tabs on the bottom where they belong using the console, and now this command doesn't do anything. I don't want to use Chrome, I want to use Firefox, just make it a default option instead of making me root around in console settings that don't even work any more.

You do not need to install the Stylish extension to be able to do this.
You can easily create a chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder and a userChrome.css file in this folder with the code.
Note that you may need a higher number (CTR uses #TabsToolbar {-moz-box-ordinal-group: 100} and Tab on Bottom uses: #TabsToolbar {-moz-box-ordinal-group: 10000 !important;}) as there may still be toolbars around that use a higher value for this property.

  • Bridge CS3- My find command has quit working, any help?

In my Bridge CS3 the find command cannot find any of the keywords that I spent hours adding. It has been working fine, but one day stopped. I have deleted the plist, the cache, and the recent workspace to no effect. I have not added any new software recently. It doesn't work if I am searching a file that I have open in Bridge so it is not a matter of not waiting long enough for the thumbnails to generate. Those were the only suggestions I found anywhere. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I am running this on a Mac if that makes a difference.

I may have to upgrade as you suggest. I did find one thing that is interesting, though it doesn't explain where the problem comes from. If I open a folder in Bridge that holds files that I have added keyword to, when I close it Bridge can find those files with the find command. I am not sure why opening the folders would make a difference, but it seems to. This only works one when searching one sub-folder deep. If there is another folder in that, even though I've opened it, it will not find it.
I guess until I am ready to spend the money to upgrade I will spend an evening opening all my keyworded folders. I better find a good video to watch while doing it!

  • Finder search doesn't work

    Hi there,
on my system (Mac Pro, Tiger, 10.4.11) the search function in the finder doesn't work anymore.
I tried almost everything: Onyx, all the mdutil stuff for re-indexing, everything worked fine but it doesn't solve the problem. Spotlight itsself also workes properly but I need the search function in the finder due to another program (Snapper) I'm working with, so alternatives like EasyFind are also no solution for me.
When I enter a search and start it, it never finishes (in the right bottom corner always the turning circle and the message "searching"). Doesn't depend on which harddrive or in which folder I am searching.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks a lot!
    Benjamin

Verified the drive with Disk Utility to ensure there aren't directory issues?
Try starting in Safe Mode. Does it work in SM? How about after a reboot?:
[Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393]
[What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392]

[Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5- Computer shuts down during Safe Boot|http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24054]
Safe boot mode runs a directory check command similar to that used by Disk Utility's repair. In Tiger it ignores some stored information (cache) that is normally read that speeds up the boot process, and it moves some other caches to the trash. It also uses only System fonts and disables all Startup Items, third party items, and any Login Items.

  • Find command doesn't find embedded string, only initial string

    iMac 5K, Yosemite
In Safari and Preview, I note a change from earlier versions. When I use the cmd-F Find command to search the contents of a page or document, it finds only cases where the search string is at the beginning of a word, not when it is in the middle. This can be really a problem for some kinds of searches, for example when you know the root word but can't anticipate all of the prefixes that could be used in the document.
Silly example: search for "fringe" does not find the word "infringement".
This is really disconcerting, especially as it marks a big invisible change over how string searching has worked since time immemorial (try searching for "memorial". Hah.)
I don't see any preference that would let me specify what kind of searching I want to do. There needs to be at least a preference. Or a big warning that says, oh by the way, just because you didn't find it, doesn't mean it isn't there.

Did you read my hint at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080229204517495 ?

  • 'Find' function doesn't work on some HP documents

For some pdf doc's I downloaded from HP, if I copy some characters from the text and then paste them into the Find box, the characters show up as hieroglyphs (mostly squares) in the Find box. And then actually executing the Find using those characters doesn't work, because it can't find the very word that I copied them from! On top of that, if I manually type a word into the Find box (showing normal letters), it won't find it even though I can see it within the text on the page showing on the screen. Very strange! In documents other than these old HP documents, the Find function works fine.
I looked into the document properties (menu: File >> Properties >> Fonts) and see that there are 9 fonts that have names I have never heard of before, and those fonts say "(Embedded Subset)" after the font name and "Encoding: Custom" in the font descriptions. There were a few normal fonts listed before these for that document as well.
Anyone have any idea what is going on?
    - Brad

It's hard to say without seeing the actual, source content, but given what you are describing, I would venture a guess that the source content is of too poor a quality to OCR reliably and accurately.  To test this theory, after running OCR, identify a term that you can confirm is present, but that the search feature cannot identify.  Then, copy and paste that term into Word or Notepad.  What I expect you will note is that a "0" (zero) has been identified as an "8," and other things of that nature.  OCR processing is garbage in, garbage out, so the source always has to be considered.  Repeat this process across the document to see if experience similar results.
You don't describe how exactly you are transferring the microfilm "images" to PDF, so it's difficult to say if that process is at issue or could be improved.  I suspect that's contributing to the problem, though.
Finally, with regard to the degraded image quality, you want to make sure you are selecting "Searchable Image (Exact)" from the OCR dialogue.  ClearScan or any type of downsampling will likely cause or contribute to the type of issue you are describing.  In a situation with low-quality source material, you would not want to use these other options.
    Hope that helps!
