"Find" file question

Hi:
As all can see, still learning the subtle nuances of 10.4. so here hopefully is a simple one.
Not at all new to the mac interface, but when going to find something, first off the "Find New" window has the following search options "Computer" "Kind" and "Last Opened". I almost always use "Name". Any way to switch the default?
Secondly, when searching for "Name" and I have a file on my desktop named for instance "smallplan.psd" the search comes up empty. I'm searching "Computer" then tried Computer, Home and Volume - same thing.
Any suggestions? TIA and Happy Holidays.

Ah, I get you now, Murman. That question/problem has come up before. Unfortunately, I don't remember the answer, or if one was even found. It may have to do with a damaged Spotlight index.
Try downloading Spotless. I liked this shareware so much, it's one of the handful I've purchased. It's a bit more of a nuisance to use the unregistered version, but all of the functions are there. You can do two basic things.
1) Delete all existing Spotlight index files on all or some drives. This will force Spotlight to rebuild them.
2) Delete the index files and turn Spotlight off completely.
I prefer the second one, which is different from making a drive private in Spotlight's preferences. If you do that, neither Spotlight or the Command+F finder window will return any matches on a drive marked as private. But if you use Spotless to simply turn off Spotlight's ability to index a drive and delete the indexes, then the Command+F finder window behaves like the Finder of old.

A paragraph under the following path in Acrobat SDK
"Acrobat Interapplication Communication > Interapplication Communication API Reference > Acrobat Forms Plug-In > Forms plug-in OLE automation"
suggests to place the AForm32.api file in the Acrobat's plug-ins folder:

AForm32 is now AcroForm – it's the same thing.
However, I don't believe that we expose the COM APIs in the Standard edition – only in the Professional edition.

CGI map file questions, help !!!

I am trying to use the CGI map file to open web reports. I got two questions at this time.
1. How to refresh the report to reflect resent edits ? I used the CGI map to open a report. Later, I made some edits to the report and opened it again. However, the browser showed the report before the edit. I had to save the report to different file name and edited the key in the map file to show the edited report. This should not be the right way.
2. How to open a report on a separated screen which is on top of the original one ?

Hi Kate.
As far as a find and replace tool is concerned, most of us
here prefer using some tool such as FAR or BkReplacem as they offer
more features to help in this kind of scenario. The simple answer
is however that these tools, as indeed does the inbuilt tool, bases
it's search on the HTML. Therefore if there are specific instances
of HTML strings you will have to analyse carefully them before you
replace anything. It sounds like you are already some down down
this line. Take a backup of your project and test out your theory.
As far as your map file question is concerned, you can safely
reimport your map file PROVIDED that no changes have been made to
the mapids in the meantime. Personally I wouldn't do this unless
you are 100% sure of this. If it is a case of having 100s of topics
that are not mapped and never have been but could be, I'd just
create a new map file and map away.

Find files with key words

trying to find files using key words is not working using bridge with cs3 and windowsxp.
when key words are attached to a file they are evident when the image is open. when i try to search for the file using the selected key word i get a no results found response.
any suggestions

IDVD6 cannot find files

On Nov. 2nd I postet a question on the iDVD6 forum. Even though 138 people have looked at it nobody had an answer.
My question was as follows:
After I make a DVD slide show from, burn it and put it away, if later on I try to open it a window pops up saying "The following files could not be found". The names of the files are something like this:/users/my name/iPhoto library/originals/2007. If I answer "find files" I am redirected to the iPhoto library, but since the files that I am supposed to find are not specific there is no way I can find them through thousands of pictures. If I answer "cancel" iDVD get stuck with the little wheel turning. Nothing has changed in my iPhoto library. I know all original pictures for the DVD are still there in a special album. It is a recurrent problem for me.
I apologize for the long question, on the other hand we should be able to open an old DVD project without suffering through these problems.

Can't find file to sync photos - why not?!?

I recently re-organised my photos on my PC & changed the file location for the photos to sync to my iPod. I reconnected the iPod & it went through to organise the photos in a new photo cache as I would expect...but then when it went to actually move the pictures onto the iPod, I get told 'can't find file' and so it does not sync
I can see the pics in the cache, the location of the photos on iTunes is right, but they don't seem to talk to each other & so nothing happens
anyone seen this before or have any suggestions??

ok one more question
The file syncing issue now seems to be resolved & the ipod connects to the PC without too much argument now
the only outstanding issue is that I have seom videos within my pictures. Previously these existed within the Pictures folder, but I could still play them
However now this doesn't happen & in the Pictures folder I just get the first frame of the video, without being able to play them. I don't know why suddenly it won't play them
They are all in mp4 format. as most are home videos I wanted to keep them in the Pictures folder rather than move them into the official Videos section

What has happened with Spotlight? Can't find files anymore. Why?

Apparently I have two iPhoto libraries. When I use Spotlight to find them, I get an iPad user guide as the first return. One library is in Pictures. If I search that Finder folder for iTunes Library, search finds nothing. If I search that folder for iPhoto it returns iPhoto Slideshows, a file that follows after the iPhoto library file. If I use Spotlight, it returns hundreds of unrelated files. Not useful.
If I double-click the library in Pictures, I get this message in iPhoto: Do you want to switch the current iPhoto Library from “iPhoto Library” to “iPhoto Library” and relaunch iPhoto?
I suspect if I do, I'll never find the library that is now open. How'd I get two libraries? I didn't do that.
My main question: Why doesn't Spotlight return the location of the file I'm looking for?

Yes, I've done that. I just did it again in response your suggestion. Had a fusion disk problem s few days ago; had to wipe it and restore so I'm working with a clean system. Should have been indexed... I dropped my whole hard disk in the privacy space; nothing happened. Then I dropped iMac Home; I could see it was indexing. But nothing changed...
Today the problem was searching for a library and I wondered if Spotlight is coded to not find such Apple created fundamentals.... But daily, no matter what I'm searching for, even if I find it, it is not as efficient as it used to be.
Maybe I'm just a grouchy old man, but it seems to me Spotlight was better before it was improved.

iOS: About File Sharing

Firefox won't open, error message"can't find file at jar:file" etc.

"Firefox cannot find file@jar:file:///program files/Mozilla Firefox/omni jar!/browser config. properties." I tried to download firefox and refreshed the desktop link and still no go. Cannot get firefox to browse.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Find files and establish links to help organize my computer

I was advised to post this here instead of where I initially posted it:
Like a lot of people, I have accumulated eBooks at different times and they are scattered all over several drives. I want to organize them. I am trying to remember how to make a UNIX script to do what I want. Then I can put it on a cron so that it will automate the process for me
What I want to do:
Find all .epub files
place a link to those files in file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/
If this can't work then even to find and move all of the .epubs would work; however, I would prefer to use a link because I also want, with suitable alteration, to use the script to organize my pdf files. Some of those pdf files need to be left where they are because they are manuals; but, again, I would like a central list so I do not keep looking, online, for files I already have.

Smart Folders is the way to go, however, to find files, use "find".
To find in your Home Directory and any attached drives:
find ~ /Volumes/ -iname '*.epub'
To create a symbolic link:
find ~ /Volumes/ -iname '*.epub' -exec ln -s {} "file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/" \;
Not sure if find will look in "file:///Users/my_name/Documents/ePub Links/" (which you don't want), but if it does, we can exclude this directory with the -prune option.

Print window in version 8.1.2 can't find file to print

Version 8.1.2, I'm trying to print a PDF from a medical website, i'm prompted to save or open the PDF file. I choose open. The applet opens up as to print, then an error message appears, unable to find file. But if I save the file to my desktop, then open it up, it prints fine. I have this version running on 4 others servers, no problems there. Anything else to look for? I've also checked the version of java on the servers, also the same version Java 2 Runtime Enviorment SE v1.4.2_06, and Runtime Enviorment 5.0 update 9? Also checked to make sure the plugins were using the same. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried, importing the music into iTunes again? So delete the music from iTunes only not the system, & then import to see if it finds your musics?

It sounds like iTunes seems to have lost track of all your music and you must locate each file individually. I would recommend at this point that you check for 3rd party plugins to see if there are any causing an issue:

If the issue persists after removing the plugins, I would next try recreating your iTunes library:

Find function no longer finds files

Does anybody know why might my Find function in Finder no longer finds files and how to fix it? It finds only a limited number of files and they have nothing to do with the search term. I have selected "Computer" as the searchable entity.

Instead of using the Find function,I use the free Find Any File app http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30079/find-any-file Try it.

Itunes 9.2 can no longer find files.

Using Mac 10.4.1, With itunes open, the music files are all there, but when I click to play, it says they cant find file. All the files are on the main hardrive where they have always been. Not sure what to do. Garage Band also does not mix down to ituens as it has in the past, but goes to the hard drive where the other music files are store. It appears a new itunes has been created as well but it is empty.

Something has happened to breaks your links. Have you verified your hard drive with Disk Utility? You may have directory corruption.
As for solutions, the only one I can think of is to rebuild your iTunes library.

by "repair" I mean I went to the control panel, option - programs and features, and in the list of all my installed programs I selected "Apple Software Update". On top of the screen you find the options Uinstall, Change and Repair. I clicked the repair button and that did the trick. After the repair I could uninstall the program. I also uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support en Bonjour, thus all Apple programs. Then I installed iTunes 10.5 again and everything went fine.
