Find media use in a project

Hope this isn't too much of a noob question, but how do I find which timelines use a particular bit of media (video or music) in a project?
How hard can it be?

Several ways in the Project panel.
the Preview area at the top of the panel shows video and audio usage. The little disclosure triangle there opens a popup menu showing each place it's used. Clicking an entry in the list brings that sequence to the front and selects the track item.
In the list view, you can display Video Usage and Audio Usage as columns. To select which columns are displayed, open the flyout menu in the upper right corner of the panel and select Metadata Display..., then search for "usage." Note that columns these usuallyshow up toward the middle of the other columns. In CC and CS6, these usage numbers are interactive just like in the Preview area
in CC and CS6, the Icon view shows a "badge" in the lower right corner if the clip is used in any sequence with the project--a film strip icon for video usage, a waveform icon for audio. Again, clicking the badge opens the same interactive popup menu mentioned above.
In a related vein, if you're working in the Timeline and want to find the project item that a track item is from, right-click and select "Reveal in Project." As of CC, the same feature is available for finding the sequence by right-clicking the sequence's tab.
Also new to CC, PPRO has duplicate frame markers that indicate if the same segment of a clip has been used more than once. You enable this through the Timeline Display Menu accessed via the wrench icon near the upper left corner of the Timeline panel.
More info than you asked for, but no extra charge ;-)

If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does imovie  take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff. If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

  • Can't find offline media for a saved project.  Premiere Element 13.  I'm just a novice

I'm just a novice. I've tried to open an older project and it states that media is off line.  I haven't be able to get it back in order to burn another copy of the project.

Are you trying to open a project file from an older version of Premiere Elements in Premiere Elements 13?
Or, have you done a project in Premiere Elements 13, saved closed it, and now reopen it to find a lot of colorful displays
and "Where is the file _____?" messages?
Major question...forget about the project for the moment...if you go to the computer hard drive, can you spot the files
that the project is telling you are missing?
After any of these project files were saved closed, did you move, delete, or rename files and folders that went into the project?
Let us start here, and then we can decide what next and then go into a lot more details to get your project's source
    media reconnect to the project.
Never hesitate to ask questions and ask for clarification.
    Thank you.

  • Cs5 is asking me to find all media associated with a project file imported from FCP BY HAND.

Please tell me there is a way around this.
I have an XML file that was exported from FCP and I'm importing it  into CS5. I have the drive with all of the media on it. I load up the XML and CS5 is asking me to find every single piece of media involved with the project by hand on the drive. THis is insane and will take me hours. Why will it not locate it itself? Please someone tell me there's a way to let it search throught he folders on its own.

Repeating some of what has been stated here....
What PPro is looking for is the assets in the same directory structure as when the XML file was created from FCP. So let's say that as you were about to save the XML file from FCP, you had all the assets on 1 single drive. Some were in Folder A, some where in Folder B, some in Folder A-1 (a subfolder of A) and some in Folder B-1 (subfolder of B). As long as the files remained in roughly that same folder structure in relation to one another, PPro should be able to find all the other assets AFTER you've found the first one.
With all the translation if you go from a Mac to a PC system, there's a lot of chance there that the directory structure - even if you kept it basically all intact - could still be messed up. Once the XML is loaded into PPro, however, you should be able to select multiple offline clips in the project folder, choose "Link Media" and have PPro go through and (hopefully) find everything automagically. If not, the Finder button in the "Link Media" dialog box should help.
PPro doesn't really care specifically about folders and subfolders when relinking, it is just looking for the RELATIONAL structure based on the last time the assets were ONLINE in the project. So even if your original assets were in 1,400 different folders, it shouldn't require you to relink based on each individual folder, so long as the RELATIONSHIP between all the files and folders remained the same.
Hopefully that makes sense. I know when I work with FCP editors the footage is generally handed to me on a drive with all the assets being essentially in a very different relationship than when they were on their FCP projects (since they usually are going from multiple drives on their Mac to the single drive that they hand me with the project assets). So I'm usually required to manually relink all the assets anyway. Kind of a bummer, but thankfully most projects are limited to only about 100 assets or so, and filenames are generally unique.
    Good luck!

  • Export problem when using a lot of large medias in a premiere project.

    Hi !
My premiere/media encoder have a weird comportment when I use a lot of large media in the same project :
    - has I import more media (avi uncompress out from aftereffect) in my project, my exports are getting slower and slower (lag before the progress bar start moving)
    - the files I export are getting bigger and bigger !
    - when I reach about 20 gigs of total medias size, I'm totally unable to export with media encoder (the software freeze after I launch the queue) and have to open the project in after effect to do the export (with the same weird lag before the progress bar start).
I have to precise that I'm aware that longer montages are heavier once exported.
I'm speaking of exporting 30sec montage, same sound, comparable background, colors, image type and camera moves.
the only difference is that in one of the montage I use 3 footage and in the other 14.
The weight of the export (FLV in most of my tests, but the same thing happen in mp4, f4v...) is sometime 3X the expected weight.
Exporting the video uncompressed and then compressing the it with media encoder (FLV birate 700) give the same result (a 10meg file) and a weird lag before the progress bar start moving.
Exporting the video uncompressed and then compressing the it with sorenson squeeze (FLV bitrate 700) give a good result (a 3meg file).
I have to use 720p uncompress media for my montage as the video would be use for television, not only internet.
I tried to export the file with other computer and have the same result.
    I'm working on a PC, intel core2 quad CPU Q6600 2.40Ghz. 12GB of RAM, winvista 64bit,
graphic card : Nvidia quadro FX 570 256mb

  • Is there a way to move only media used in Project to another hard drive

Is there any way to ove only the media files used in a project to a seperate hard drive and then work from that drive without all the other files?
    Thanks

Yes. Go to File->Move Project and then in the dialog that you can you can choose to move along only the clips that are being used by the project, or the entire events containing those clips

  • Any way to Find correct set of Media from Browser within project?

I've been working on a bunch of projects for a couple of years -yes- and periodically backed up various media elements to other hard disks.
Now I have a problem. Since FCP4.5 places media in the last project's selected folders and because of my backups, I no longer know which set of media some items in my browser are referring to. Duh.
By selecting items in the Browser or Timeline or annnnywhere, can FCP tell me where the media I am actually referencing is located. (Since I have multiple "backup" copies of media in multiple folders on multiple drives, this is a problem)
    Thanks muchly to all.
    Sincerely, duh

If you select the clip in the browser, and right
click or CNTRL-click on it, on the menu that pops up
there is REVEAL IN FINDER as an option.
Now you see the importance of being extremely well
organized. Simply choosing the media drive as your
capture scratch will create folders that separates
footage by project. If you try to make folders and
do all the naming yourself, then you'll have to be
diligent in changing the capture scratch when you
change projects. But really, just let FCP do it's
thing. It is very well thought out. AVID doesn't
separate media by project like this...it is a huge
    plus.
    Shane
    The organization recommendations are great.
But, for finding the clip . . . Thanks. I tried that, but my options in FCP4.5 show only
    Open in viewer
    Open in new viewer
    Open in editor
    Batch capture
    Reconnect Media
    Media Manager
    Make offline
    Duplicate as new master clip
    Merge clips
    Export
    Batch Export
    Cut
    Copy
    Item properties
    Label
If that's a new feature in FCP5, I might be stuck. Or did I do something wrong. I tried right-click and control-click and got the same options. Didn't see REVEAL IN FINDER.

  • I shared my imovie in media browser and the project disappeared from my computer...any ideas of where it might be? I've searched everything.

I created a 30 min video in imovie and then clicked share in media browser....
I went to go find it and the raw footage is in imovie, but the project is GONE.
Nowhere to be found, not idvd not imovie, only some crypric .
I can't even find media browser on my computer even though when I go to
download media browser, my computer tells me I already have it!!!
Where oh where has my imovie gone?

What do you mean by raw footage when you say "I went to go find it and the raw footage is in imovie, but the project is GONE." Can you open your working movie in IMovie Edit Project window? Does it show to the left of the file name in the Project library or Share/Media Browser drop-down box that it has processed the movie?
my processed movies are listed in the iMovie Projects folder as Movies/iMovie Projects.localized. Using this file, the drag and drop worked for me so I was able to burn the movie on iDVD. However, shared iMovie projects are still not recognized by iDVD. An old project has disappeared and the new one does not appear in iDVD in the Media pane as it should. I checked the preferences, and directed it to look in the iMovies Project folder. I am currently sharing with iTunes and when I open IDVD the medium shared movie is there as should be. Hummm. Why not the large shared movies showing in IDVD?
You probably have tried several things already but: open your "more info" box for the movie file if you can, and there the extension shows .rcproject and make sure you are checked to open with iMovie.
Check your iDVD preferences. Make sure it is looking in the right place for your movie files. It automatically checks in "Movie" folder but you can also ADD by directing it to your iMovie Project file specifically. You could go into your Home Library and dump your preferences then reopen IMovie and see if it helps (don't trash your preference until you reopen IMovie and see it is working okay) but this did nothing to help me.
In iMovie, try removing your movie from Media Browser  and reprocessing it. You might send it to iTunes and see if it shows correctly there.
I will keep at this as there appears to be a bug with the processing of large movies and IDVD recognizing them as previously. It is just not finding shared movies.

  • How to get a list of file paths for all files used in a project

I have a project in Premiere Pro CC which has a large number of bins.  A sequence in one of these bins uses files from other bins.  I am trying to find the locations of all each of the files used  in the project.
    1)  Obviously I can select each clip in the timeline and show in finder, but there a lot of clips
    2) The video usage associated with each file in the project would help.  However
               1.  I haven't found a way to display only clips that have video useage if all of the bins have not been expanded.
              2.  Video usage  shows usage for all sequences, so one would have to manually check the pull down for each file to see if it is used in the sequence in question.
    3) I tried exporting the project to final cut pro xml.  The path url gives me the information that I need.  For some reason, however, when I do the export only one clip's information is there, not the information for all of the other clips in the project.
    4) I tired an export for speedgrade and all of the file names are there.  However the paths are not.
Basically I want to find all of the files in the project and relocate them to a specific folder for that project.  There's got to be a way to do this but I'm not seeing it ....

Thanks for the suggestion concerning the file path.  And certainly it would have been nice to have done this before beginning.  However this is a project that has been around for quite a while, and the files have been moved into different bins.  And now the project sequence is being revised.
So the problem is, worded slightly differently, how can I search all of the bins for the files that are used just by this sequence, ignoring the files which are used by other sequences?  Or, how can I get a list of the file paths of the files that are used in the sequence?

  • Imovie on my ipad ...refuses to recognize AVCHD Video. Also when i remove video clips already used in a project, it is unable to recognize missing clips after I've put them back. How do I get around these 2 issues?

My iMovie refuses to recognize, import, or work with AVCHD Video. It also refuses the same video clips even after I have converted them to Mp4. Also, when I delete a video clip already used in a project, then later import the same clip back to my ipad, the software is unable to recognize and find the clip again! Help! How do I get around these issues?

    Hi Craig,
I also got the second problem. The storyboard on iMovie trailer has all these missing videos. If I import them on my iPad it doesn't find them.
If you find a solution it would be much appreciated to share it here ... I'll do the same.
    Thanks,

  • How do I backup movies/clips to use in future projects?

After burning my first DVD & deleting the iMovie file, I was sad to discover that I could not just pop the DVD into my drive & access the material to use in future projects. (Is there a way to do do this that I don't know about?)
I'm guessing I need to burn the archived iMovie file onto multiple regular CDs (I have not burned anything that spans several CDs before). This is confusing me because the zipped file is hardly smaller than the original (Is there a better zip program than the one that comes with this system?) I threw away the wrapper for my blank CDs so I don't know how much they hold but I think it is something ridiculously small like 670MB and the iMovie file is 7GB. Is this the only way to save my movie/clips so that I can bring clips into a future movie?
1.8 GHz Power PC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   256 MB DDR SDRAM

welcome Novice to the  board ....
    hmm, multidimensional question ...
DVD is end-of-the-road, not meant for further processing; there are tools, allowing to import DVD to iM, but that is a time-consuming and lossy (=losing pic quality) process, due to the deliver-format nature of DVDs.... search forum for "DVD import"
iM is by concept not meant to handle a clip in many projects (that can easily been accomplished with pro tools as FC(E), which offer "bins" for imports, offering the content to many sequences/projects).
there are workarounds, dragging clips from the internal files of an iM project to another... but, as said: you "fumble" the concept: import tape, edit, burn - done.
a video contains ~13GB of data per hour... and, video is allready highly compressed, no zipper can reduce that dramatically... and, you risk damage of files... yepp, a cd-r fits ~700MB = 3.5min of video......
    recommended workflow:
    * don't store iM projects on -r media (cd/dvd), but firewire connected harddrives..
    * keep the tapes; import clips from tape into project; you can export single clips out of iM/import into another project, I wouldn't do that with "lots" of clips, importing the tape is... more convenient..

  • How can you tell if a file is being used in your project or not?

How can you tell if a file in your bin is being used in your project or not? My director dragged hundreds of reference files into my project and only used a few of them. I'd like to do some house cleaning and delete the ones that are not in use. This project file has 100 sequences in it, so it would be a tough manual hunt to figure this out.
In Premiere Pro (or Flash for example), where all the information is in the Project Bin such as in/out times and duration, there is where it tells you how many times that piece of media has been used or if it hasn't been used yet.
Can FCP tell me this info?
    Thanks for yout time!
    -Monty

    Monty,
Within FCP, there is a menu item called "Media Manager" (depending on what version you are in). This would be worth your while to look into. It basically organizes your project by moving/archiving any used assets of a project and leaving out un-used assets. It saves a ton of disk space.
For example, say you have a 5 minute clip with an in/out point that is just 30 seconds. Media Manager will "archive" just that 30 seconds, not the entire clip. There is even a setting that you can add additional "handles" time to the front andd back of the clip if you think you may need to add or change transition.
Do a google search. I was just watching a few Youtube videos on this myself.

  • How to get path of a VI used in LV project?

How can I get the path of a VI used in LabVIEW project?
Actually I want to replace the VI used in LV project by saome other VI, and I think it can be done if I get the path of the VI already present in project and replace that path with path of the VI which I want to include in that project.

There are several ways to replace a VI, say "MyFirstVI", with another, say "MySecondVI".  The method you use will depend on several factors, including
the version of LabVIEW you are running
whether the VIs are in a LabVIEW Project or not (if they are, I'm assuming they are in the same Project)
whether you want to replace all MyFirstVI instances with MySecondVI, or selected ones
the size (number of VIs) of the Project.
As noted, if you want to replace all of MyFirstVI with MySecondVI in a Project, here is one way to do this:
Close the Project.  You do not want to do this with Project open.
    Rename MyFirstVI to MyOldFirstVI.
Rename MySecondVI to MyFirstVI.  If MySecondVI already exists in the Project, you might want to Copy it instead of Rename.
Open the Project.  Find and open an instance of MyFirstVI, verify it has the code of MySecondVI.
In Project Explorer, find MyFirstVI and rename it MySecondVI.
Exit Project.  Rename MyOldFirstVI back to MyFirstVI.
At this point, all of your VIs have their "original" names, but in, say, Main.vi, wherever MyFirstVI was called, you should see MySecondVI.
For doing selective Replacement (or even total replacement where you want to actually see all of the instances where replacements are made), you can use QuickDrop to your advantage.  You need to have in memory the VIs that use MyFirstVI, and also have MySecondVI in memory.  With the Project open and the relevant VIs in memory:
Open any VI that shows MyFirstVI on the Block Diagram.  Right-click it and choose "Find All Instances".
When the search is done, you need to "visit" each of the found VIs -- use Ctrl-G to do this.
When you find an instance of MyFirstVI, type Ctrl-Space to activate QuickDrop, start typing MySecondVI until it appears on the Selection line (if you are lucky, you will only need to type MySec and it will find the correct VI), then type Ctrl-P to replace MyFirstVI with MySecondVI.
Type another Ctrl-G to go to the next instance of MyFirstVI and replace as needed.  When you've replaced all of them (or all that you want to replace), stop.

  • Compiling all video used in a project

i know there is a process to compile a copy of stuff used in a project. i have a huge project that has files all over the place ( 5 different hard drives) - does this process make a duplicate of each file in your project and place things all in one folder? does it work well -
    thanks
    mrC

The process is called Media Management, and yes, it will compile everything in your project to a single location. You can read up on it in the manual, or any of the numerous video tutorials I'm sure Google would turn up.
