  • Alternative to Find My Friends for Emergency Location Service?

I'd like to find a way for family members to be able to view my GPS location in case of an emergency. There are two Apple iOS apps that immediately come to mind -- Find My iPhone and Find My Friends -- but they both have limitations.
    Find My iPhone
This is a great app, and I've used it several times. I love the way that it integrates with icloud.com. However, in order to use this app to share my location with family members, I would have to give them my iCloud username and password. They would not only be able to track my location 24/7, but would also have access to other iCloud assets such as email, calendar, and photos. I'm an adult with nothing to hide, but I still have reservations about giving my parents and siblings full access to my iCloud account.
    Find My Friends
This app comes very close to what I'm looking for. I could add family members as "friends" in the app and then share my location with them. I like that the app allows you to hide your location. You can choose when you want to make your location available and when you'd rather it remain private.
So, for example, let's say that I'm going on a long trip by myself. I could unhide my location so that my family would know that I made it to my destination safely. Another example would be if I were going hiking by myself in a remote area. In that case I might want to unhide my location so that family could locate me if I fell and got hurt or became incapacitated.
The problem with the hide/unhide setting is that it's completely manual. You have to remember to open the app and toggle the setting. This introduces human error into the equation. What if I forget to unhide my location before going on that hiking trip? Or what if I foget to hide my location after the trip is over? I'd rather there be a better, automated approach to location sharing.
Ideally, I'd like for there to be a way that I could keep my location hidden until requested by family. Family members could use the app to request my location at any time. When a request was made, I would receive a push notification asking me to accept or decline that request. If I didn't respond within a certain amount of time (preferabbly a customizeable amount of time), my location would be automatically unhidden and shared with family.
    Here's an example scenario:
Let's say I'm by myself and I'm involved in an accident which leaves me unable to call for help or use my phone. My sister wonders why I didn't show up for our scheduled lunch together. She can't reach me by phone or text message, so she sends a request for my location. The app notifies me that she has requested my location and that I have 10 minutes to respond or my location will be made available to her. I'm hurt and can't use the phone, so after 10 minutes, she sees my location and can try to find me or call for help.
I'd love to see this feature added to Find My Friends. I've looked for other apps that might have this functionality, but can't seem to find any. Most location-sharing apps either make location data available 24/7 or require the user to periodically check in. If anyone has any suggestions for an app that might do what I'm looking for, please let me know. Likewise, if anyone can think of a way that I could use Find My Friends or Find My iPhone to achieve these results, please share that as well.

I discovered an app a couple days ago that works pretty well. It's called Road ID, and it's made by the company that sells the bracelets by the same name. The app is free and has 2 main features: eCrumb and Stationary Alert.
Before going on a run, hike, or ride, you specify how long you think the activity will take. You also specify up to 5 contacts to notify. When you begin your activity, the app sends a text message or email to your chosen contacts with a brief message and a URL. By clicking on the URL, friends can track your current and past GPS location on a map. This is the "eCrumb" feature. Your friends don't have to have the app installed, and they don't need anything other than the provided URL to access your location on the map. When your activity is finished (either because the allotted time expires or you manually end the activity), visitors to the URL can still see your past GPS activity (your movements or "bread crumbs" during your activity) but not your current location. They instead receive a message telling them that you have ended your activity (or something similar).
The "Stationary Alert" feature is pretty neat. Basically it works like this: if you're out for a run, hike, or ride and you remain stationary for longer than 5 minutes, the app's Stationary Alert is triggered. You then have 60 seconds to disable the alert, otherwise the app sends a pre-defined text message or email to your chosen contacts with a link to view your location.
You can enable eCrumbs or Stationary Alert or both. From my testing, if you only enable Stationary Alert, your chosen contacts are not notified of your activity unless the Stationary Alert is triggered. With eCrumbs enabled, they get an alert as soon as you start the activity. I like that I can choose whether my friends/family get to view my real time GPS data or whether they are just alerted if there's an emergency.
I think this app will work well for me when I go running. I'm still testing it out, but it looks promising so far.
Like many third-party app that use location services, this app needs to be running in the background (and most likely needs access to your phone's background app refresh capabilities). That means the app is constantly using your phone's GPS and probably draining your battery more quickly. For that reason, I wouldn't use it for anything other than going out for a run or a hike. I already use GPS apps when I go running, so I'm accustomed to charging my phone before and after a run.
When it comes to something longer, say a solo road trip, I think I'll stick with Jay-Ray's suggestion and just use Find My Friends. I can always set a reminder to hide my location once I get to my destination, or, as Jay-Ray suggested, just leave it on until I need to be sneaky. Find My Friends only uses location data when one of your friends opens the app to request your location. It's similar to Find My iPhone in that it's not constantly using GPS. This definitely saves on battery life.
So, for now, I'm using Road ID for short activities and Find My Friends for longer activities. I don't like having to use 2 different apps, but it's a reasonably easy solution at this time.
P.S. - Don't know if I need one of these, but just in case.......DISCLAIMER: I'm not affiliated with Road ID, Inc., or Apple, Inc., in any way. All app names and feature names are the property of their respective copyright holders/owners and may also be registered trademarks. My recommendations and observations are purely based on my own experiences. Your results may vary. I also don't really go hiking anymore; I'm not a very good runner; and, although I'm often driving by myself, it's certainly not because I'm going on vacation or traveling to fun and exotic locations.

  • Finding legacy version of Find My Friends for iPod touch 4G?

I got a new iPhone and gave my iPod 4G to a relative. I restored the iPod to factory settings and set up a new Apple ID for my relative, but lost Find My Friends in the process (it's not a default app on the touch, apparently). When I tried to reload Find My Friends, I'm told I need iOS 7. Is there any way around this, to get the older Find My Friends? I understand Apple recently began offering "legacy" apps, but when I try to load Find My Friends, I'm not offered that option. I'm merely instructed to upgrade to iOS 7, which of course can't be run on an iPod touch 4G. Thanks.

    Hi all,
ok, i've done some experimenting - unfortunatley it may have made things harder to understand!
I have a 4S and my wife a 3GS. I've removed Find my Friends from both and re-installed. Then i've added each profile again...
Now when I use my wifes 3GS and search and find my iPhone, the 'notify me' button is enabled and I can set a notification.... However..... If I look at my Find my Friend to see my wifes profile, my notify me button is still greyed out!?
    Very, very weird!
I have a 4, wife has 3GS.  I see the same thing.  (Both iOS 6. Both updated Friends app.)
    Must be a wife thing!
(or more likely, another feature not available with a 3GS)

  • HT4539 Where do I find the download for the iOS 5

Where do I find the iOS 5 download?

It's only available by connecting a first generation iPad or third generation iPod touch to iTunes on a computer and checking for updates. Any other device will either be updated to iOS 6 or is incapable of running iOS 5.

  • HT204407 Find my Friends doesn't work after IOS 7 update

We use find my friends for our entire family to monitor kids locations, etc.  Since updating to IOS 7, one of the phones only shows it's location sporadically - otherwise says location not available.
Have verified location services are turned on, nothing is blocked, etc.
This phone was updated to IOS 7 over wifi (vs. through iTunes) - one other phone had some minor (unrelated) issues after updating over wifi that were resolved by doing a factory reset & updating from iTunes - wondering if that could be cause of the issue here as well.  Anyone else encountering issues with FMF?

Apple did update their help section on the app. I found this trying to figure out why my Find Friends wasn't working after the update to iOS 7.
"Find My Friends is turned on in Background App Refresh (in Settings > General in iOS 7). When Background App Refresh is turned off, Find My Friends can’t use Location Services in the background. If Background App Refresh is turned on, but you quit Find My Friends via the multitasking interface, location updates won’t be sent to your friends until you open the app again."
Hopefully Apple will update this as it was not this way prior to iOS 7. Killing the app didn't prevent your location from updating in iOS 6 as I constantly killed the apps running in the background and never had this problem till the update. Hope this helps! Just make sure to not kill the app as of now and to tell everyone you follow not to kill their app and locations will continue to refresh. Otherwise it won't update locations till the app is opened again.

  • Find my friends no longer accurate

I have been using find my friends for almost a year and it's been great.  However, over the last few days the accuracy has suddenly significantly decreased.  The location dot jumps around to various places and the program can't refine the location properly and so shows the probable location circle as covering the entire city in which I live.  I haven't changed any settings but the usefulness of the program has really changed almost from one day to the next.  Any help on this would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

  • In iOS 8, how can I share my photo stream AND assign different names to each of our devices in Find My Friends?

I'm using the iPhone 5c, and iPad mini, and my wife has a 5c, too.  We used to use my iCloud account as the main account on everything, so we could share our photos as we took them.  But now in iOS 8, Find My Friends is moved to iCloud.  I can't add my wife to Find My Friends, because it lists me on all of the devices.  How can I go back to taking a photo and it showing up on her device while allowing us to find each other?

I chatted with Apple tech support.  They said [add rolling eyes here] that this is easily solved with the new Family Sharing feature.  In other words, I sign in on my phone, my wife signs in on hers, and we share our photos in the Family folder.  Of course, no photos are automatically shared in the Family folder.  It's just a shared folder, something anybody could have created in iOS 7.  I would still have to drag all of my photos and my wife would have to drag all of her photos to the folder in order to share them.  Also, I notice that app updates on her phone are strangely being downloaded under her account, so when we make a change, it says the downloaded app will have to be deleted, because it was not downloaded through my account.  This Family Sharing thing is a joke.  I told the tech support lady that this didn't feel like much of a "feature" at all.  She suggested that I provide feedback if I didn't like it, which I did.
So there is no way to do what I'm wanting to do under iOS 8 at the moment.  I love Apple products, but wow, iCloud is a disaster at the moment.  Just look at all of the people who upgraded to iOS 8 and upgraded to iCloud Drive without understanding the implications.  Now they're getting an error message that they need to download Yosemite in order to access their documents, even though Yosemite isn't available to the public yet.  Not well planned.  In the meantime, we just don't share our photos in exchange for finding each other for lunch.

  • Find My Friends iOS 8

    Is there anyway to:
    1) use a different AppleID to sign into different devices for the 'Find My Friends' app using iOS8? It appears that any device using the same iCloud account must also use the same AppleID for "Find My Friends" now. I just got off the phone with Apple Care. It's my 4th call to them (or return call from them) in the last 4 days totally over 4 hours. Their conclusion is no and I just need to separate each device onto a separate AppleID for iCloud & Find My Friends. When I ask them how all our devices used by 3 family members would then share contacts, calendars, notes, etc the response was nobody else does that. So if I can't do that is there a way to:
    2) Share contact, calendar, notes and other data between separate iCloud accounts? If I can't use a different AppleID for Find My Friends can I merge two AppleID's and share data like the new iTunes allows family sharing? The Apple Techs seem to think no. Based on my testing it is also no.
The way Find My Friends is designed for iOS 8 (versus all previous versions) where the iCloud account determines the Find My Friends ID, defeated the ability of all but one member of my family to allow friends to actually find them and it requires all of us to share the location of all friends.
There has got to be a better way than trying to get Apple to change the app back to the iOS 7 version?

Just  upgraded to an iPhone 6 and was hoping that might resolve the issue by default but unfortunately I'm getting the same error message as above. Anyone got any ideas? My wife thinks I'm deliberately blocking my whereabouts

  • Can't download Find My Friends on devices running  iOS 6 or 7

I can no longer download Find My Friends on my kids iPhone 4(iOS 7) and 3gs(iOS 6) as the app store now says it is only for iOS 8 and up.
I used to have one main iCloud account that I used on all my families devices to easily track them. We have had 3 iPhones stolen so it was an issue to be able to locate them quickly and easily. Now that I have set up a family, the main iCloud account on each device is now the individual family members iCloud account. I figured Find My Friends would do for tracking lost and stolen devices, but I can not download the app onto the iPhone 4 and 3gs.
Am I missing something? I have Find My iPhone turned on both devices. The family member shows up in my list of family members  on my iPhone 4s running iOS 8 in Find My Friends, but their location is not available. So I am assuming I have to share their location from Find My Friends on their device. I have not tried logging in as them from my device and sharing their location then logging back into my account, but quite frankly I don't have the time to mess with it. Which is why I have an iPhone in the first place...
Thanks for your help in advance.

I have the same issue. I restored an iPhone 4 for my 16 year old  niece. Only stipulation was she use Find My Friends. While I was getting the apps for the phone I was unable to download one of the most important features. It would be great if they allowed 2 versions or incorporated support for iOS 7.1.2. I'm sure I'm not the only one who decided to give up the $200 trade in offers to keep a perfectly good phone (looks new still from case use) in the family.

  • IMovie for iOS not finding videos since update to iOS 5.1

    Hello everybody,
I just updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1 to be able to get the newest iMovie for iOS update. The iOS Update as the iMovie Update went fine so far. But when I try to open projects I have made, iMovie just shows a yellow triangle and says that it can't find the movies. It tries to find them but with no success. I never moved the movies and they are still in the "Foto" App ( or camera-roll as it is namend sometimes). The Movies have all been taken with the build in camera, no import or nothing.
I guess Apple has changed the directories name of the "Foto App" so iMovie can't find the Movies made under iOS 4.x and the program is not "inteligent" enough to find the movies anymore.
Has somebody similar problems and could tell me how to re-link the movies?
    Many thanks!

  • Where can I get a copy of "Find My Friends" to load on a iPhone 4 that can only run iOS 7.0.2?

The App "Find My Friends" in the app store is ver 4.0.1 which requires iOS 8.0.1.
I wish to load onto an iPhone 4 that can only run iOS 7.1.2
Where can I find a copy of "Find My Friends" ver 3 ?

I believe I have found the answer myself ... but it might help other people with this and similar Apps.
Apple has a work around for older devices.
Download the latest app to your computer with iTunes.
Then log into the store with your device and select purchased.
Find the app(s) for iOS7 you downloaded to iTunes and then select install. If an older version (i.e. iOS6) is available it will download.
    Cheers!
