Find my iPad way far off!

Before going on vacation I tested the find my iPad app.   Instead of telling me it's at my house it puts it a few houses down the street in my neighbors backyard.  How would I ever find it if it's off almost 1/4 mile ?

Sounds like you have a WiFi-only unit.  Your results are normal.  Give it some time (a year, no joke) and it'll figure out where you are, at least within fifty yards.
Even with pin-point accuracy (the G3 unit with a GPS chip) the "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief.  All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself.  This requires action before the device is lost/stolen.  If the device has significant personal informtion, it should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

  • Find My iPad option turning off

After upgrading to iOS7, when I go to my iCloud account settings, I find "Find My iPad" option off. I turn it on, enter my iCloud password and the switch turns green (on). Sometime later, when I go back, it's off again.
What could it be? Has anyone experienced it?
    Regards,
    Roberto

Me too.  I use an iPad Mini, cellular.
Best I can tell, this started when I upgraded to iOS7, but I had assumed it was a "set it and forget it" service.  Now I must check it regularly.
Everything else under iCloud (except keychain, it seems) also gets turned off, but having "Find My iPad" turn itself off, is a very troubling issue for me.
I am trying to determine what might trigger this, but have not any real guess so far.
    However, there are related issues:
My Calendar loses the events, and my Contacts lose many entries.  In trying to discover why, I went to Settings and poked through.  While Contacts and Calendar were also turned "Off" in the iCloud settings, turning them on restores my calendar and contact entries (I have no idea why).  That is when I noticed the "Find My iPad" had been turned back off.
The only function which seems to remain in the "On" setting is the keychain (and I am not sire I ever turned that on!).  At any rate, anything else I may choose, will be turned to "off" within a day or two.

  • I lost my iPad 3days ago. I tried to use "find my iPad" but always"off line"Idon't understand why always"off line" and  how Ican get back my iPad!

I lost my iPad 3days ago. I tried to use ”find my iPad” but always”off line”Idon't understand why always”off line” and  how Ican get back my iPad!

    Two possibilities:
    1. Maybe it's not turned on.
    2. Maybe the iPad is wiped (setup as new)

  • I used find my iPad but its off... How can I get it to turn on?

I lost my iPad recently and have been trying to use iCloud to help find my iPad but it keeps on saying its offline and I just wanted to know if there was any way I can turn it on so that I can locate the position of my iPad because I know for a fact it is not in my house.

Sorry, but if the iPad is turned off, or isn't connected to WiFi or G3, or has had the Find My iPad service disabled, there's no way to locate the iPad.
    Regards.

  • Missing an ipad and find my ipad is turned off

Hello.  I have a customer who misplaced one of his iPads in his huge house.  I logged onto the router and found that it was still connected to the network.  I could see the IP and MAC addresses, but can't pinpoint its location in the house.  Unfortunately, Find My iPad is not turned on on that particular iPad, otherwise I would've paged it and followed the chirping.  We've looked all over the house, but to no avail.
We've looked into MetaGeek's InSSIDer and Chanalyzer, but can't justify spending over $2k on resolving this issue.  Is there a way to track hone in on the device's location either through Windows CMD network commands or Apple services?  I've tried using tracert and ping commands here at the office, but the results just seem to sporadic and unreliable.  The customer has several AirPort base stations throughout the house if that helps at all.
    Thanks for your help.

I take it the sound has been muted? Otherwise you could FaceTime call it, text it, or email it and follow the noise.

  • Using 'find my iPad' in supervised mode?

We have just puchased 30 minis.
Updated to IO7 through configurator and now all IPADs are supervised.
The problem is: I want to activate 'find my Ipad/iphone' through the cloud. The IPADs have the 'find my ipad' switched on. But the cloud is not finding them. I tried switching find my ipad on and off, but the Ipads will not allow it to know off.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks

No. If your ipad is just "asleep" it should work, but if it's manually turned off then there is no way to connect to it. The Find feature works through the same network connection the iPad uses to connect to WiFi and/or cellular data.

  • I cannot find my iPad.  Can I track it or trace it?

I've been traveling a lot and can't find my iPad.  How can I trace it?

If you set up the Find My iPad service in the Settings prior to the iPad going missing, then there is a chance that can be tracked, wiped of its data or locked (which does the same thing as activating the screen lock), though it depends on a number of factors: the iPad is turned on, is connected to a WiFi or 3G network, and has not had the Find My iPad service turned off or the iPad completely restored.
If you did not set up Find My iPad, then there is no way to track it. Contact the police and change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPad (the iTunes Store, for instance).
    Regards.

  • Help re restore ipad and 'find my ipad'.

I have backed up my ipad2 to itunes and then updated to ios7. When i tried to restore ipad the PC ran out of charge mid way! Now when I try and restore ipad it states it can't until 'find my ipad' is switched off in icloud. i have gone to icloud and removed ipad from the account and it appears offline but this error message still appears.
I can't do anhthing with the ipad as it won't open beyond saying connecting to itunes and then error message as above on PC
    HELP!!

    Hi,
A remote wipe resets to factory settings.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/find-my-ipad.html
Setting a Passcode lock would have prevented anyone from using your iPad.
If you had a message setup on the iPad to return the iPad and you wiped it, that message is gone.
It states clearly here: "I understand that I cannot undo or stop this action".
It's hard to think straight when something like that happens and it's understandable, and hopefully you'll get your iPad back. I would definitely file a police report. Hopefully you had the serial number wirtten down and saved in a safe place for identification purposes.

  • Help me with Find My iPad

So the other day I turned on Find My iPad and then i lost my iPad a day later.I tried to find it with Find My iPhone on my iPod. then it said that my iPad was offline when it was connected to the internet. Then i went into Setting > iCloud then scrolled down to Find My iPad and it was turned off. So the thing is that it turned off by itself. I did not put in a password or anything (which you have to put your password in to turn it off) Can somebody please help me from this happening all the time? And BTW Thank You In Advance.

    Your post is extremely confusing.

What would make you think your iPad was connected to the internet when it was lost?  In fact, the WiFi does not remain on at all times - as a battery saving measure.

How could this happen if your iPad was lost?  Did you find it?
    Anyway, see this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2697
You need your Apple ID and password to turn Find My iPad on or off.

  • Why isn't "Find My iPad" automatically enabled on the device when purchased? Why is it a feature that is OFF and has to be turned ON instead of the other way around? I didn't know it needed to be enabled and now it's stolen and I can't locate it

Why isn't the "Find My iPad", "Find My Mac", etc. feature not automatically enabled in the iCloud Settings on every device? My iPad was stolen a couple days ago and it's been showing Offline under "Find My iPhone" feature so I started doing some research. Come to find out "Find My iPad" has to be enabled under the PRIVACY button in SETTINGS. I never knew that!!! That feature is highly needed for Apple products so can some explain why it's not already enabled on every device and actually has to be turned ON from the OFF position and not the other way around? Now some lucky person has stolen my iPad and I can't locate it because Apple wanted to give me the choice to enable it once it was already ******* stolen!

Simply stated that is design. If you want to suggest a change, there is a feedback section elsewhere on this site.

  • How can i turn off Find My iPad without using the iPad?

My swipe screen has stopped working completely on my iPad. Very disappointing as it is only 18 months old and has been well looked after! I have tried holding down the off/on button and menu button to reboot but this doesn't work. I have now logged the fault with Apple and have an appointment to see someone in the support team this Monday. However, I wanted to try one more thing. I want to restore to factory settings as I've read that this could resolve the problem. When I plug it in to iTunes and try to restore iPad i get a warning message telling me I need to go to iCloud settings on my iPad and turn off Find My iPad before restoring. As I cannot use the iPad I cant do it from there. Is there another way? Please help me, I want to weep!

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE (this will disable Find My iPhone)
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.

  • My iPod mini has locked up...I cannot get in to turn off the "find my iPad" so I cannot utilize the recover.  In addition the clear button at the bottom of the unit no longer works...what can I do?

Can anybody suggest how to solve this problem.  I have an iPad mini that gas locked up.  I cannot get into the menu to turn org the "find my iPad" setting.  Is there another way...by the way, the menu button at the bottom of the iPad has stopped working, too.

If this is your iPad, no problem.   Access your iCloud account.

You may need to restore from the cloud as so far the only way to unlock is to remove from your iCloud and erase the device.  There has to be a better way.
There is a ton of info on finding an iPhone with iCloud.   Where is the info on getting it working again after it is recovered?

  • IMovie has dragged photo from iPhoto too far off screen that I cant find it

I have opened a logo within the iMovie viewer screen that had so much black around it that I couldn't figure out which way to drag the photo to find the small logo surrounded by black. After so much dragging around I am not sure which way I need to drag the photo around within the iMovie viewer to have it centered, much less even visible. Apparently, iMovie saves that setting. Now even when I open completed projects where the photo was centered it is not showing it. I think it has the photo so far off to the left, right, below or above that it won't find any of them. I have tried zooming in and out with the photo settings in iMovie. Still nothing. I tried using other pictures very large or very small but am afraid that I dragged the first one around which was about 30" x 30" with the logo only occupying about 4" in the center that I have moved the center too far off the axis that it would be occupying the theoretical space several feet off the center of the viewer and have no idea which way to drag it to get it back into the center. Hope that makes sense.

    Hey,
Thanks for the quick response. I am trying to bring a logo from a near pinpoint using Ken Burns effect to as big as I can before I transition to a bumper. I did this once before and had the same problem. I finally found the center of the picture/logo by moving it around, trial and error and luck. I have tried to use known good images in place of the logo that went black and it seems they are all showing black as if they are all so far off center they only show black. I have opened finished projects where it shows a similar logo effect and when I go to 'edit photo settings' in the completed project it the image goes (or shows) black.
Now, any project I go to I can't bring in any picture from iPhoto without it showing just black. If you try using a photo in iMovie from iPhoto and put it off center, it seems the next time you try using another one it's starting point is just as far off center (the same point) as the last one that was moved around.
Not sure if I explained that correctly.

  • HT201304 Is there a way to restrict user access to find my ipad with out restricting the mail app?

I am working on setting up multiple Ipad 2 tablets with iOS 5.1.1 and I need to restrict access to turn off find my ipad. The only way I see to do this is to turn on restrictions and dont allow changes on accounts. The issue I have then is it also restricts the Mail app setup. Is there a way to restrict one and not the other? We use microsoft exchange mail and I would be willing to use another mail app if anyone can suggest one that works as an alternative?
    Thank you.

I don't know of any reliable tracking app, but perhaps someone else here can suggest one I'm not aware of. Any could be defeated by just restoring the iPad, though, so about all you could hope to do would be make things a bit more difficult to turn off. For a third-party app, you'd have to restrict the user's ability to uninstall apps, something which might be equally problematic for you.
    Regards.

  • Turning Off "Find My iPad" From iTunes

I currently have a headless iPad (screen removed for replacement) and I need to reset it back to factory settings before selling it. Whenever I try to do this on iTunes it tells me to turn "Find My iPad" off. A legitimate step however the only way to turn "Find my iPad" off is from the device itself. The device obviously cannot connect to the internet to wipe it remotely as the WiFi antenna is unplugged. Is there any way around this in iTunes? All of the information I'm finding on this forum is for iPads with screens and I need to know if it is possible to do it without one, just with the iPad plugged in to iTunes.
    Thanks.
    BPL

Already tried this route, which proved fruitless as the iPad's wifi antenna was disconnected along with the screen so there was no way to do a remote wipe or anything. Read my other reply for my final result.
One interesting thing though I tried is that while on my old sync I tried deleting the "Find My iPad" app itself from the device and then re-syncing in hopes that it would remove any settings associated with "Find My iPad" but that didn't work either as iTunes still told me that I needed to turn Find My iPad off.
    Thanks for your help though.
