Does iphone use only wifi to track phone or can it use cellular towers to show its location? Why can't I find my wife whom is downtown?

It uses GPS. Although the iPhone has a dedicated GPS receiver, the iPhone uses A-GPS, or assisted GPS. The assisted part uses an available wi-fi network and/or the cellular tower the iPhone is connected with to speed up the initial GPS acquisition. When downtown around tall buildings and a number of them, this can affect GPS reception - that and heavy cloud and/or tree cover.
Without a GPS fix, the general location should be available - cell tower and wi-fi location services only are not near as accurate as GPS acquisition. Unless cellular reception is low at the time and location services and Find My iPhone have not been turned off on the iPhone, a general location at least should be available.

Try signing out, then back in on your phone: Settings>Store>Apple ID, tap the ID shown, sign out, sign back in. If that doesn't work, reset your password here: https://iforgot.apple.com.

I made my own apple id because my family was getting my texts from other people. I want to add my device to my dads find my iphone app on his icloud but can't figure out how, without having to log in to his apple id on my phone. how do i add my device?

I made my own Apple ID because when I was logged into my dad's my family was receiving my texts from other people. I want to add my device to my dad's "find my iphone" app but without signing into his Apple ID on my phone because that was causing them to get my texts. I was told by Apple I could add my device to his by signing into icloud.com but there is no option that I can find to add my device. And I don't want to log back in to his.. Any ideas???

Also when I apply the safety copy it only imports the app the phones have had in common, so none of the apps that only the iPhone 4 had doesn't come in, only the ones I and the iPhone 4 has had in common. So you say the only way I can use the Apple ID to download on the old iPhone 4 is if I delete the apps that are in the phone and then download them again? How will that change the ID to download/update from. Won't it still have mine to update/download from?

We need to be able to track my daughter's iPhone.
It appears that all devices linked to a Find My iPhone app has to be signed in with the same Apple ID. In that sense, it appears that Find My iPhone is more like Find My Device Running My Apple ID.
Is it possible for "my" Find My iPhone to add devices with different Apple IDs?
If not, the child needs her Apple ID for iTunes purchases and (arguably) calendar. Can that be done and, if so, how?
The phone is an iPhone 4 running iOS 6.

have teh same apple id on family members phones can be a major headach, there are sever apps that you can download that can track your child much better then using the find my dvice app. Life 360 is a great one,

Use Find My Friends app instead. Much easier to manage, and you won't need each other's id/pw's to do it. They only need to accept your invitations and vice versa.

Can family members added as part of the Family Share feature of iOS 8 really erase other family members devices with the Find My iPhone feature?

I initiated a Chat session with Apple Support to see if this was really possible. The answer I got was that it DID seem possible at this time. If this is true, then Apple may want to look at giving the sharing device the option to disallow other family members from erasing that device remotely (or playing sound, entering lost mode).
I would be comfortable allowing my wife to lock my iphone or erase it remotely if needed, but I would not want any of my kids to have that ability.
Can somebody else confirm this could be done?

Just tested this. You have to enter the Apple ID Password for the device you are trying to remote erase. You CAN put the device in lost mode without the password, but you cannot initiate a remote wipe without the password for the device.

Hello people. I have (had) an iPad 1 (wifi only) - which was stolen two days ago. It's locked with a passcode but I am worried that someone will be able to get into it. I've got the Find app installed on my iPhone 4S and it shows that both my iPad and stolen iPod are offline.
Q - if either the iPad or the iPod goes into an unlocked wifi area, will I be notified on my phone?
Q - can anyone actually break into my iPad as it is locked?
Q - how does iCloud work in terms of the info that's on my iPad - photos etc that I don't want to lose?
Q - I've reported this to the police - does Apple need to know?

I erased my macbook air because it was running really slow (it didn't resolve the problem). I reinstalled the disc that came with it (Mac OS X 10.6.8), but now iTunes cant find my iphone. Don't know if ubuntu had repartition everything but you could try pressing F11 repeatley after power on button is pressed.

Find My iPhone is good for misplaced iPhone but not good for thief and it was never meant to be.
You chance of getting it back is very small.
There are a few things you can try.
Try remote lock/wipe your iPhone through Find My iPhone.

I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device.

I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. Whenever I try to use it, it always says "All Devices Offline." This is regardless of whether I am in a good Wi-Fi zone or not. I like to use Find My iPhone to remotely track my battery charging status whenever my phone is charging in a different room. That's been really handy, which is why I really need to get this fixed. No matter what computer I use, the problem is always the same.
My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device, especially considering the bad things I've heard about iOS 8.

You don't need to update to iOS 8 to use Find My iPhone. If you haven't already tried, go to Settings>iCloud>Find My iPhone and turn it off, then reset your phone (hold the sleep/wake and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release). After it restarts, turn Find My iPhone back on and see if it works properly now.

Is there a way to turn 'find my iphone' off other than using my phone? The screen is not working, and I'd like to reset it, but cannot because that feature is on!

With iOS 6, I was able to link Find My iPhone accounts across multiple devices. Now, with iOS 7, it appears that I can now only keep track of devices that share the same icloud login.
Talk about a downgrade. I regularly use my phone to find my wife's iPad or my son's iPhone. Or should I say, I used to. Now I can only find the phone I'm using.

Here here! it seems to me that Apple is looking to get people to have one major iCloud account and force families to buy additional storage.. WIth 7 devices (and thousands of $$$ in devices) I couldn't possibly use one account at 5 gb for back up, 10 GB would be a stretch between my wife and I between our combined 4 devices. Why would I spend this kind of money again to put my kids in idevices when the BEST security device just got castrated? Really disappointing.

Iphone stolen - Find my iphone application does not find my phone

Dear all,
yesterday evening my iphone 5 was probably stolen.
After I discovered that (approx. 30 to 50 min. after it was stolen), I tried to call my phone, but the phone was already turned off. I went home immediatly, logged-in into icloud and started "find my iphone app" and requested "erase" as soon as the phone goes online somewhere.
The problem I have now, is that several times I logged into that "find my iphone app" in iCloud in my brower, sometimes I received the message that "find my iphone app" cannot start. I did send report to Apple already.
I do have an old iphone 4 as well, which is also connected to my cloud. That phone is online and right in front of me.
When I start "find my iphone app" the phone cannot be found… it says the device is "offline". But it's not.
So I'm afraid now that the "erase" request for my iPhone 5 is useless and does not work.
On that phone is really sensitive data from work, so it must be erased.
Anyone knows what I can do now?
