'Find my Mac' has locked my computer

Since friday (3 days ago) my computer has been showing "Enter your system lock PIN code to unlock this Mac"
From what I can gather, the person who I bought it off (over 2 years ago now) has accidentally (or not) locked it, using the find my mac feature.
I bought it via gumtree and therefore have no way of tracking him down to ask him to unlock it.
Does anyone know a way around this?

There is no way unless you contact the owner for the unlock code or get him too unlock it.
Well, I have booked a genius appointment, which I will be going to tomorrow, but from what you've said, I'm not hopeful they will be able to help me.

My question is , Is there any way to find that who has locked the data i.e. can we get the computer name or some other info from which the user can be tracked .

Hi Aditya,
If your are looking for terminal name (Computer Name), Transaction name, SAP User Id and the time, then maybe transaction SM04 is the one which will suit you.
If you double click on the row and say " End Session ", the user will be thrown out of that transaction.

My laptop was stolen but "Find My Mac" has located it. Now how do I get it back?

Hi All,
Early this morning, a friend of mine called me to tell me her laptop was stolen. She asked me to help her track it using iCloud find my mac. The theives also stole her wallet and other things from her car so this isn't something that was just misplaced and an innocent person came across it. My question is, now that I know where it is (within a couple hundred feet vicinity) what is the best approach I can use to get this back for my friend? She's got years of family pictures and does not have the laptop backed up so this is very important to her. Any ideas?
It shows the laptop around 4200 S Wade Way (about 3260 w), West Valley City, Ut

Well, I did contact the police with all this information. They actually went to one of the houses with me (the one on the corner) and it was an old man who was very polite who lived at home alone and didn't seem like the type. Instead of knocking on the other doors with me, the police said, "Your locating program is probably just wrong and it's not here." he wouldn't knock on any other doors so I plan on going tomorrow morning and knocking but the chances of anyone confessing are slim so I don't know what approach to go at with them. I don't know why find my mac doesn't let you leave a message like find my iPhone because I would leave a message saying "this mac has been misplaced. If you return it, the owner will reward you with $500 without pressing charges or asking how you came across the laptop. Please call -------, but, no. All I can do is knock. lol

Maybe. Launch the Console application and view the following log:
/Library/Logs/AppleFileService/AppleFileServiceAccess.log

Did you tried disabling the protected mode in Adobe Reader ? Here's a Link that depicts the steps to disable Protected Mode - Reader Help | Protected mode (Windows).
P.S. - I would recommend you to not use Hard Restart option ( Pressing Power Button) unless your computer is completely 'unresponsive' , because it might lead to system instability and might corrupt your installed programs.

I cannot find the Mac HD in my computer.

Hi!!! My name is Beatriz and I have been trying to update some of my mac's software and I haven't been able to do it due to the lack of a hard drive image during the installation process. After all this happened, I searched for some solutions by myself, i tried to run "disk utility" but it just crashes down everytime I try to use it. I can never see the hard drive image whenever I use the "startup disk" utility. I really don't know what to do because I haven't been able to update my software since March.

Exactly which Mac model are you trying to upgrade?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
Exactly what are you trying to update? The OS or applications?
Which of these; Repair Disk or Repair Permissions, crash when you run Disk Utility?
Other than not being able to update, is the Mac functioning properly?

Avast update has locked up computer

I updated Avast and now I can't get a complete boot. I get the Welcome screen, enter my password, and am told that it is loading my programs - then nothing. I presume that I need to uninstall Avast using PC Doctor - which I can reach - but I don't know how to do it. Any suggestions will be MUCH appreciated.

Have you tried starting the computer in Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key just as soon as the ThinkPad logo disappears from the screen to get to the Boot Menu? From there, you may be able to boot the system and then uninstall Avast from it's entry on the Start Menu.
You may want to check with Avast technical support, though, as they may have some alternate suggestions about how to solve the problem.

How can I find out if my mac has a trojan with out third party software?

I'm trying to find out if my mac has a Trojan on it. I got a pop from a tech support site warning my computer security could be compromised. I did not click any of the links in the site but did call the number. I got very suspisious when they told me the were certified microsoft tech support and told me there was "something band inside my computer". I'm pretty sure they were bogus and just going to try to sell me junk. But after much research I'm very concerned about the ramifications if I do had some kind of Trojan. I have done a bunch of research, most of the content I have found is from 2012/13. Don't want to purchase apps-sounds like there not that great, even ClamXav which can get stuck in a loop as stated on their site. I don't know much about DNS but sounds like it is may the fix. Does anyone know a good source for current info on Trojans and how to detect them. I'm running OSX 10.7.5 and an older iMac.

That's mostly been fixed for a long time now and can easily be avoided by following the instructions.

I think antivirus software is the only thing that can tell if you've got trojans and harmful files on your computer, and lists them down. But I want to find out if my Mac has viruses without downloading AV software.

There's no one single method that can be used, as different malware can install in different places. You have to know what you're looking for. The folks who make AV software know what they're looking for, so that's the best option.
However, why do you have this concern? Do you have a reason to believe your Mac is infected? If so, what is it? If not, you can probably relax (though that's far from a guarantee).

Is there any software that updates automatically that I could find the IP address through?

Shouldn't the IP address be on the box you bought the machine in? If you have the box, take it to the police as evidence that it's your machine. If I were you, I would set the firmware password when you get it back, but make sure you have the password written down in a safe place. If you forget it, there's only two ways to reset it. Either pay $400+ for the tool that can do it, or pay almost nothing for Apple to do it, I think it depends on where you live. The firmware password is this encrypted password and it can't be hacked either. The password prevents anyone from booting the machine into recovery mode, thus preventing them from restoring the computer to factory settings or performing any other functions. It's not stored in the hard drive so replacing that will be of no use either.

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.

My new i-Mac OSX 10.8.2 has locked up - it will not let me re install operating system !

Find my mac application has killed my lion install

Yesterday I thought I'd try out the lock feature of the Find my mac app on my iPhone. (I wish I hadn't now!). Only to find my mac is now unable to run Lion at all.
As far as I can tell the application created a firmware lock on the machine. So I typed in the password, which it accepted, and the machine then continued to only boot from the recovery partition. I also had a windows boot camp partition which also worked fine (strange that windows could boot fine). The lion partition just would not boot at all! Whilst this was annoying at the time I didn't fret as I had a time capsule backup which was only a few days old.
I then proceeded to restore the system from the time capsule backup, after it completed the mac still would not boot from the lion partition. So I thought a clean install using the recovery partition. This would not work either as the installer app was saying the lion install was damaged!!
So I then had to reinstall snow leopard from my original disks (my version of lion is a mac app store download). This then gave me a bootable drive albeit in snow leopard. I then remembered I had backed up my lion download onto my time capsule. So I proceeded to reinstall lion using the installer after I had done a software update to the latest snow leopard (10.6.8).
Then low and behold the drive would not boot, back to square one.
I have tried formatting the drive completely, restoring from backup, clean install of lion, and snow leopard, the mac still will not boot in lion at all!
What can I do, as my mac is just out of warranty literally!

Yeah problem is my apple store is over 40 miles away, and I shouldn't really have to fork out the fuel for a problem that apple have created. Plus they charge you now for any support issues, and the guys on the phone support (without sounding disrespectful) aren't very helpful from past experience. I just posted on here to see if anyone else had the issue because this is major, I work in IT and we have held off upgrading all our macs to lion, this has not given me any more faith I this latest OS release.

Barry, the other stolen computer, my IMac does not show me a locked on such and such date, but simply says offline. I set that computer to erase when it goes online and notify me when it is found, and to play a tone and play a message that the police are on their way!
