Find photos in TIME MACHINE...Help...PLEASE....

Hello all.
I have been using time machine to back up my Imac for a little over a year.  I just looked in Time Machine and can't seem to find any of the photo files in there.  All my Itunes music files are there.  Everything thing on the desktop is in there but I can't find the photo files anywhere....
Luckily, I still have them all on my actual hard drive but need to install a new OS which require me to erase all the contents of the current hard drive.  BEFORE I do this, I want to be 100% sure the photos are on the "My Book" external harddrive that Time Machine is supposed to back everything up to.
Any help finding the in finding the files would be greatly appreciatted...
Thanks,
JB

Although you can't make any changes to the files or you'll risk corrupting your library,  you can hold down the control key and then click on your 'iPhoto Library' file where a popup menu will appear. Select 'Show package contents' and a finder window will open showing the contents of your iPhoto Library. There will usually be lots of folders that open containing your master files, modified files, thumbnails, etc. Open up the folder labeled 'Masters' and you should be able to see your files. It will at least provide you with reassurance that your library is intact.
Another option is to hold down the option key when launching iPhoto. This will allow you to select a different iPhoto library to open, or to create a new one.

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.

  • Cant find photos on time machine

My hard drive crashed and now is fixed. I can't find photo library from time machine to retrieve them. I had about 700 photos for 08 and cant find them.

Were the photos in iPhoto? You should be able to open iPhoto then enter Time Machine and browse your iPhoto library for any date for which you have a backup. If the missing photos are not there, are there other photos there or is your entire iPhoto library mia?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Genius Bar lost a business file. Can't seem to find it in Time Machine...Got Ideas?

Genius Bar lost a business financial file. Can't seem to find it in Time Machine. Gone back several days...Got Ideas?

You need to give me more info..
What did you take the Mac to the genius for??
What did they do to it?
Did you have TM setup at defaults doing backups hourly?
Are you using a Time Capsule? Did you ever backup the time capsule??
Please do a backup of your Time Machine backup right now.. in TC plug in a suitable sized USB drive and do an archive.. you can do nothing else while this is happening but it is crucial for you to have another copy of whatever you have.
Archive is a bit slow.. and the backup is slightly less useful.
The fastest method is plug the USB into your computer and copy and paste  the backups.backupdb directly to the USB drive. It should copy at around 60GB/hr so calculate how long that will take. See instructions here. http://pondini.org/TM/18.html Assuming you are using a TC then you use method 4.. copying from a Network backup to local drive.
Never work directly from the original backup .. work just from this copy so anything you do can be reversed or recovered.
Read very carefully the methods of restoring files from TM.. it is a bit out of date but Pondini has the best details.
    So Q14-17 here. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
You can do a full recovery of the backup to a USB drive.. and then search for your file in more normal way.
Get professional help.. and this is where you need data recovery people who are familiar with apple TM backup format. Check local apple store or perhaps better local Apple independent repair business that are used to handling this kind of event.
Also talk to the company that makes the software as they must have to deal with people who manage to lose, corrupt or in some other way ruin their data and need to recover.. see what hints they can give you.
Surely at some point you pass your info to your accountant in the form of a computer backup file from your accounting package.
I have to admit I am surprised if you never backed up your business data file to a USB stick and put it in a filing cabinet at home or a hard disk at a friends place.. Cloud storage for your business files.. Did you depend totally on TM for backups? You never planned for a fire or theft of your computer and TC?? Or what has happened.. loss of computer files and failure of the backup? No greater teacher than the burnt hand that touching hot stuff isn't a good idea. Sorry .. it is a very hard lesson.. but electronic data storage on magnetic media is ever one byte away from being gone forever.. !!

I have an iMac (21.5") with OS X version 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and am using iPhoto '11 version 9.3.2.
    Thanks for a quick response.

  • How to restore a single Photo with time machine in Aperture 3 / iphoto?

How to restore a single Photo with time machine in Aperture 3 / iphoto?

Its been awhile since I used iPhoto, but I have done it.
If I recall correctly this is how.
In iPhoto open event that you need to restore the photo to ( the event that originally contained it )
Then open TM it should show that same event and then go back in time until you find the missing shot
Highlight the one you need to restore and tell TM to restore it.
    Good luck

  • How Does Time Machine Help If... iCal Data Lost?

    Hi,
How does Time Machine help if, say, your iCal database gets messed up? Or, how does it help if you accidentally delete all your playlists from iTunes? I'd be interested to know.

That's a very good question (although probably better directed at Apple than us). Because Time Machine is new and Apple's in house programs handle data in different ways, there are a range of different means of recovering data for different applications. Not very user friendly and iCal is one of the least user friendly ones.
As an experiment, because I don't make much use of iCal and have no real idea how it works, I tried to find out how to restore its data. Starting with working with the application: nope, not TM aware at present. OK, where does it restore its data? Next step Spotlight where, as it happens, the obvious search "Calendars" brings up a folder in ~/Library labelled that with a whole lot of mysterious stuff in it. I'm pretty sure that restoring that folder would do the trick. No doubt, if you could figure out which Calendar belongs to what in the above folder you could restore a single calendar that was causing problems. Still, Apple's clearly got some work to do to make this more transparent. Roll on iCal4!
(By the way Mail also restores from within the program).

If you back up your mac before deleting your emails, Time Machine should back up your e-mails.
I never tried this so i'm not sure to find them in Time Machine. To browse in your backups simply click the Time Machine icon in your dock. In the right bar, you can select an backup. Than you can browse in finder, in your backkup.
EDIT: Just browsed and CT above was right. This topic might help you:

  • Recovering photos from time machine

I just bought a new MacBook Pro and find that time machine is not allowing me to retrieve photos from Time Machine through iPhoto like it used to.  How do I do that now?

With the current version of iPhoto only entire iPhoto Libraries can be restored:
If you need to restore a single photo and know the file name there is a way to do that.  If that's what you want post back and I'll layout how to do it.

  • HT1338 How to restore iphoto photo with Time Machine?

I am trying to restore a single photo in iPhoto from Time Machine.
I open up iPhoto, then upen up Time Machine. When Time Machine launches, it opens up my desktop, not iPhoto.
I have seen videos of people doing this, but I cannot get Time Machine to open up iPhoto.
    What am I doing wrong?

Apple used to support restoration of photos via the iPhoto interface with Time Machine, but has halted this support. I believe the reason was the feature was corrupting people's libraries, but I cannot be certain. Your options here are to restore either the entire library or manually go into the library in the Finder and use Time Machine to browse through file histories that way. Alternatively you can access the Time Machine backup directly in the Finder and manually copy the needed files out of it (do not restore in this way, but instead copy to the Desktop and then re-import the image as a new photo).
