Find previously imported images (Already in Catalog)

Back in LR1 and LR2, when I tried to import images that were already present in the catalog, I had an option to show me / select the already imported images. This is gone in LR4. How can I find in the library the already imported images without fecthing them one by one ?

Thanks john but after trying your suggestion things didn't change (importing an already existing image I get the message "no phots or videos were found to import"). As for my reasons of having such workflow, here is the explanation: I work as fashion photographer and I shoot about 500 pics per session. I use an external software to select the "good enough" images (as its preview is 20 times faster than the ridicously slow LR or other Adobe softwares) and the images selected in a first time can be (almost always are) different from those chose in a second time (as different people are involved in the editing process). @cornelia: images must be good enough to me or to the editor, not to LR, and we might have different opinion and in different moment. At the same time I cannot import 500 images a day in LR.
In any case my main point is that this feature (i.e. the warning that the images were already in the catalog, and where) existed on previous releases of LR and now disappeared, apparently.

  • Import acting strangely.. selecting random and previously imported images

Whenever I try to do an import, looking for new images on my existing harddrive, I am seeing strange activity that I cannot understand.
First, Lightroom selects thousands of images (all?) to import, then it automatically begins reducing the number of selected images to a much smaller, but seemingly random subset of images that have already been imported.  If I go ahead and import, and then try the same process, I get another seemingly random set of previously imported images.
    Any ideas what is happening?

  • IPhoto 9 importing images already in iPhoto's library

I have iPhoto 9 running on a MacBook Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard. First issue in four years:
I tried to import 29 new jpg photos emailed to me and iPhoto indicated it was importing 828 photos after dragging them to the iPhoto icon, the import screen displaying photos that have already been in the iPhoto library for years. What on earth is this about? I had to force quit. I have restarted the computer as well as the app, but no change in behaviour. Anyone ever experience this? Does not appear that I lost any pictures. Why and how is it importing what is already in it's own library?! Any fixes?

I realize this is difficult to understand as the problem is absolutely bizarre. I do drag the 29 new photos directly to iPhoto. iPhoto then proceeds to try and import them along with over 800 existing photos all on it's own that are already stored only in my iPhoto library. As a result, iPhoto becomes non-responsive. The 29 new  photos start off on the desktop. My one and only iPhoto library cache where the other imports are coming from is on an external HD with about 5,000 images. I do have another external backup HD, but it isn't connected when this problem occurs. Seems like iPhoto is trying to chase it's own tail...

  • Imported images not displaying in LR

My images do not display in the Library module. If I click on the Develop module I can see an individual image or three, but then as I go through the album previous viewed images go blank again. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas?

Need to know the steps you are taking when importing images into LR.
By default LR is set to always show newly imported images under the Catalog heading on the right, Previously Imported. That should read Newly imported as apposed to Previously Imported, IMHO.
What Albums are you talking about? LR doesn't have Albums. It does have Collections. Semantics, maybe, but it is helpful to use the correct terminology when asking for help. Apple Mac iPhoto and maybe Aperture have Albums. LR doesn't.

  • Previous Import folder problem

    Hi,
I have a problem with the Previous Import folder in the Catalog, this folder do not show the last imported Photo.
The Photos are imported and only listed in my folder list.
I am using Windows Professional SP3 and LR2; I did not have the problem in LR 1.41
Please give some advice to solve this problem tank you.
    Jørgen Banke Thomsen

Not a solution I'm afraid, but I also have this problem with LR2 on WinXP.
I have just built a new catalogue of 2000+ images, importing 36 or so at a time from different folders.
Not once did the Previous Import change from 0, so I was unable to add keywords or put into collections without going back to the full catalogue every time.
    Very frustrating!

  • Wallpaper problem with newly imported images. 1680x1050 displaying @840x525

    Hello,
I imported some new images into Aperture and I want to use them as Desktop wallpapers for my computer. The images original size are 1680x1050 and they appear to retain they're size upon import.
I then go to System Preferences -> Desktop and ScreenSaver and find my images in the project I placed them in. All my previous imported images that were imported many months ago still display fine however these new images are displaying 840x525! I know the exact size because after selecting the image I can drag its thumbnail view from the preview area.
I then tried just specifying the folder in my hard drive where the images are located and the Desktop and Screensaver applet had no problem displaying the images at their original size 1680x1050 so I don't believe anything is wrong with them.
I tried looking throughout Aperture if there was an import setting that could be affecting this but I didn't find anything. The only thing I've done recently was upgrade my system to 10.5.4 with the Software Update tool. Is there anything else that can be wrong here?
Note: I tried using this wallpaper as well as still have the same issue, http://ironmanmovie.marvel.com/downloads/desktops/images/desk03_1680.jpg
I would appreciate any insight to what can be causing my images to display smaller than they really are on my wallpaper. When viewing them in Aperture they are the correct size.
    Thanks,
    - Jake

  • Imported images not showing in catalog

I have imported images from my Canon 5D markIII and somewhere along the way, I've made an error in the settings.  The images are on my computer but not showing up in a folder in the LR4 catalog...how do I get them into the catalog?  When I try to find them, they are all greyed out and I can't move them - a message says that it seems that duplicates are already on the computer (or something like that).  Can anyone guide me through this?

uncheck "don´t import possible duplicates" in the import dialog.
this is a screenshot from the german version but you should be able to find that checkbox:
    http://i.imgur.com/S4EcC.jpg
when you are sure they are in a folder on your harddisk you have imported into LR already, but they don´t show in the LR catalog, then rightclick on the folder in lightroom and choose "syncronize folder".
a windows will come up with different options you can choose.
you can search for new files in the folder and import them into lightrooms database.
or delete files from the database when they are not in the folder anymore.

  • Elements 6.0 Catalog updater finds previously existing files

I recently transferred all my files and programs from old computer running XP to new system with windows 7.  Before that, when I would open Elements 6.0 it would occasionally "update" and find a few files that had been added to my watched folders and import them.  Now, whenever that updater runs upon opening Elements, it takes forever and finds thousands of files and tries to import them.  Once it goes through this very time consuming process it tells me that none of the files were imported becasue they already exist in the catalog.  I know they already exist in the catalog.  Why is is recognizing these files and trying to import them when they are already in the catalog?  I have over 18,000 images in the catalog so this process takes forever.  I did install the patch that supposedly made Elements 6 compatible with Windows 7.  Everything else seems to be working fine except for this one glitch.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Thanks for the answer.  I did back up Elements on the system running XP and I used back up and restore to the new Windows 7 system.  It successfully kept all of my keyword tags, etc.  Any other ideas what may have caused this, or more importantly how to stop it without eliminating watched folders?  Now that I think about your anwser though I do think my file structure is messed up due to using "Windows Easy Transfer" to move the old files to the new system.  It put a My Documents, My Pictures, My Music folder into the new file structure so instead of just having Users/Pictures... I have Users/My Pictures, etc.  The libraries still work just fine but there is definitely a bit of a mess going on that I just don't know enough to get it all straightened out.  I do see how this is causing the problem in my quesiton. Thanks for your input. John

  • Way to verify if newly imported images ARE NOT already in database?

i keep my images in Aperture on v3.4.5 on my Mac Pro and in the past have simply imported images using USB. after starting to use Photo Stream over the last two years it has seemed to me (just from a kind of naive look) that some of my images from my iPhone get imported to the MBP into Photo Stream (Aperture v3.5.1), some to the Mac Pro, and (i assume) some to both.
it also appears to me that if you /change/ your settings for Do Not Import Duplicates from Yes to No, or from No to Yes, (i.e. check or uncheck this option) that it is very easy to ALSO end up (say for instance on my Mac Pro where all my images are supposed to be neatly stored) with /some/ of your images ONLY in the PhotoStream project /and/ also to have some other images in BOTH the Photo Stream projects /and/ in the "non-Photo Stream projects" (i.e. in "regular" projects).
just having this latter issue basically makes a total mess of your database (since you have /some/ of your images /only/ in the Photo Stream projects) but if you add the former issue (some images only in the MBP database and some only in the Mac Pro database) then things are almost truly wrecked.
so - what i would like to know is if i EXPORT images from my MacBook Pro and i then IMPORT them into the Mac Pro database should Aperture pick up duplicates if i have Do Not Import Duplicates checked? also, i would like to know if it is possible to VERIFY through some method whether the newly imported images are, or are not, already in the database.
i am currently exporting images from the monthly dated Photo Stream projects on my MacBook Pro and then importing the images into the respective Photo Stream projects on my Mac Pro - and it does in fact seem to me that these photos do NOT exist in the Photo Stream projects on my Mac Pro. i say this since the new images get added to the Photo Stream project for that month with the next chronological number in that month (at least on my first month i have tested). they also do not seem to exist already in the Photo Stream database in, for instance, the next month which is where i would logically look for them. this then would mean that there is a very large amount of image loss in my database which is a problem.
so what i would like to do is /check/ somehow to see if the images may in fact be already in the database but happen to have not made it into the Photo Stream project for the month (i.e. they /only/ exist somewhere else in the non-Photo Stream projects).
note: for instance can i manually search somehow for "IMG_6789", which just came in with 250+ images in from "Feb 2013 Photo Stream" on my MBP and is now in "Feb 2013 Photo Stream" on my Mac Pro to verify whether this already exists or has been newly added?
please not that i cannot visually search for anything because the database is too large and i do not know where this image may reside without searching or finding it through a Aperture command.
    THANKS

hi leonie. thank you for this help.
first can you please tell me if setting Photo Stream on my Mac Pro to ON and turning Do Not Import Duplicates to CHECKED/ON (say if i start new with Photo Stream) has the consequence of ONLY importing images to my PS projects via WiFI and that any time i hook up my phone via USB (as i /had/ been doing) Aperture will then only import anything that has NOT already been imported to PS projects and it will put this in a "non-Photo Stream project"? i mean, i have realized recently that turning this ON may have completely changed the way i import images and done so in a way that puts some images from Camera Roll in one place and some images in another place.
i will divide up the rest into two parts:
    1. can you please tell me what the actual difference is between exporting images as Kind Versions and Kind Originals? i am (unfortunately) already doing this as Kind Versions and it appears to be working at least visually - by which i mean when i import photos in this manner to the Mac Pro that these images come into the monthly projects with images and file numbers that do not currently exist in this album. this means that these images (so far ALL of them) were in the laptop database but not on the desktop database (at least as far as Photo Stream is concerned which is all i can figure out right now).
i think it is in fact possible that these images may exist elsewhere in the database (and that Aperture is not picking up the fact that these are duplicates for some reason) but unless i am missing something won't this simply mean that i have a FULL SET of images in the Photo Stream database? anyway, i am not sure which is better - to catch these coming in as duplicates and to not import them or to import them into the Photo Stream projects, have them all in the database in these projects, and to deal with how they exist out of the Photo Stream projects by putting them where they belong and then running a de-duplication routine.
    2. the issue that i have been able to understand (with your help) is that when i turned Photo Stream ON, that this Do Not Import Duplicates setting was somewhere buried in my UI independent of Photo Stream settings (which has it's own poorly explained and poorly understood settings) and that this was set to ON or it was set to OFF. if it was CHECKED/ON then i was /ONLY/ importing images to my PS projects which was a total 180 degree change from my normal Aperture methodology and simply put images into PS projects and NOTHING went into my normal projects to sort later as i had been doing. then to compound the issue - when i hooked up my iPhone it would ONLY import images that did /not/ get synced to Aperture and get uploaded to the PS projects and it would tell me how many were already imported and how many were new and APERTURE WOULD SPLIT THESE UP INTO non-PS projects and PS projects which basically makes a total mess of my database.
i mean, what you were able to show me is that i DON'T KNOW what i had set originally but i think i had this setting set to OFF which would give me images both in the PS projects and in the non-PS projects as duplicates (assuming there weren't other issues) but i would ideally like to have had PS projects as just a kind of appendage or an unimportant piece of my database for reference only and to keep importing images via USB as i had done in the past and if this is what i had wanted (and if Photo Stream was implemented in an intuitive way that i as an intelligent computer person could understand) - well i would have set the do not import duplicates to OFF so that the PS images were duplicates of my normal USB imports.
but this - as i write - makes me realize that it has the unintended consequence of letting me import CAMERA ROLL images that were not deleted into my "non-Photo Stream projects" which as you indicate i don't want so this setting seems like it sets up a classic catch 22.

  • Imported items not in folder Photoshop Elements 12 Organizer; when import error states already in catalog

I have several folders that are in the same folder in Windows.  Most folders are visible, but some are not.  I attempted moved the folders I could not see in organizer to a folder not in the watch list.  Re-booted, and tried to move them back into the watch folder.  It started the process of importing into Organizer, but failed and stated already in catalog, the they are not visible.  I've uninstalled Photoshop, moved items off the machine, re-installed Photoshop and moved the files back to the watch folder.  But still, not all folders will show up.  Looked at all settings I could find that could impact.  Not sure what to do next.  Any ideas?

  • How to import images that have the same name as images already imported

I am trying to import images into LR3.  I have a number of images with duplicate names.  Some of them are duplicate images that I simply have stored in different directories and some are images that are not duplicates but have the same name.  LR3 refuses to import any images that has the name of an image that has already been imported.  Is there anything I can do about this.  If not, it kind of makes the softwares useless to me.
    In hopes of a solution . . .
    --Kenoli

Thanks.  I'm sure making sure all file names are discrete makes sense.  I guess I need to find some kind of bulk re-name utility.
Additionally, I am dealing with a very large set of unorganized images and one of the uses I would like to put LR3 to is to organize the images into directories and get rid of duplicates while inspecting them to make sure that I don't trash differing images with the same names.  One of the challenges is identifying these images so I can re-name them.
I have been working with Apple's Aperture, which doesn't rely simply on the name to identify images since it uses a more complicated algorithm to differentiate images from each other.  It is one thing I really like about Aperture.  What I like about LR3 is that it lets me use actually file directories to store images rather than moving them into its own file system like Aperture does.  I don't like having files locked into a system that is software dependent.
Also, I finally found the checkbox that tells LR to import "duplicates."  I couldn't find it before.  I don't find LR3 as intuitive as I'd like.  I've always had to spend more time figuring out how Adobe software does things than I would like. I've had little luck with Adobe's support site, aside from this forum.
    Thanks for you helpful suggestions.

  • In PSE 9.0, how do I import from files into organizer without duplicating images already in the orga

In PSE 9.0, how do I import images from hard drive files into the organizer without importing duplicated files already in the organizer or
How do I find duplicated images within the organizer so that I can delete them?

I imported a bunch of photos from iPhoto 4 on one machine to iPhoto 5 on another, expecting it to catch duplicates, without testing beforehand (duh). It didn't catch them, and now I'm trying to figure out which were the imported ones so I can delete them.
As this looks to be a laborious task if done from within iPhoto, and deleting the files via the Finder is a no-no -- assuming I can even identify the duplicates -- is there a third-party app, or even a good trick, for doing this?

  • Reset the Previous Import catalog when using auto import

I'm using auto import with a watched folder to add scanned slides to a new catalog. Works fine. My question is about the Previous Import "catalog" that new imports are automatically added to. I had thought that this catalog would be reset after each session (i.e. after closing and restarting LR), but it never resets and still shows every slide that I've automatically imported over the last couple of weeks. Is there any way to clear or reset this?
    I'm using LR3.3

Unfortunately, the Previous Import count cannot be reset without deleting the previous import from the catalog. Silly? Yes!
Also, Previous Import only records the number of files imported during the last import (i.e. via import window, auto import or import from catalog), not the total number of images previously imported. So, I'm not sure why you're getting your total shows the sum of all previous imports.

Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
Photos > Use Raw as original.
