Find trash folder in Lion

I inadvertantly deleted folders in Lion. Can't find the Trash Folder. Am I blind?

In Terminal copy/paste this command at the prompt... then press "return"
mkdir ~/.Trash
If you get a message that the folder already exists, copy & paste this command... then press "return"
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
EDIT: It would also be helpful to know which files you deleted?

  • Can't save messages, can't find trash folder

I've just tried switching from using webmail (IMP) to using Mail. I can send and receive email, but I'm having a couple of problems.
First, Mail won't let me save my messages (i.e. those which I'm sending) - I just get the uninformative "Error: Message cannot be saved".
Second, although I can delete messages, I can't find my trash folder.
    Any ideas?

Hi Ernie, thanks for your response.
It’s an IMAP account. I’ve just tried Repair Permissions – that hasn’t done the trick. And I haven’t moved the Mail folder around, at least not to my knowledge. It’s still in the Library.
In my IMAP account folder in the Finder, I have the three following folders:
    (1) INBOX.imapmbox
    (2) INBOX
    (3) shared
And in the second of these, INBOX, I have:
    (4) sent-mail.imapmbox
    (5) drafts.imapmbox
    (6) imhoprefs.imapmbox
Perhaps I should also tell you how the left-hand navigation bar on Mail looks:
I have three main folders: ‘Inbox’, ‘Sent’ and ‘shared’. ‘Inbox’ contains, as subfolders, the following:
    ‘drafts’
    (ii) ‘imhoprefs’
    (iii) ‘sent-mail’

  • Thunar cannot find trash folder

when i delete a file, thunar says:
"Thunar: unable to find out or create trash dir"
Why is Thunar unable to create the Trash dir ? Or where can I create one with mkdir ?

Where are the files you want to delete - on a remote location https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 96#p812196 ? What filesystem is it?
As I said in your other "thunar thread", pay attention to how you start your DE / WM. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1005353

  • Hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help?

hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder> go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help? how can i put all my application through application folder?

Something really odd is going on. In your first screen shot, I noticed that the Applications folder does not have the proper icon displayed in the side bar. Also, in the title bar it lists it as Applications 08-59-29-909.
Not sure where it's picking up that odd name, unless it's because it's still truly within the Trash folder.
Try this. In the Finder > Preferences > General > turn on "Always open folders in a new window". (I have a feeling you have the default setting with this off).
Now, in Finder > Go > move down and open the Applications Folder from there. Now open the folder where you see all your applications that you show in your screen shot, select all, and move them to this true appliactions folder.
This is what you should properly seeing (but with different apps listed):
See how the Applications folder has the icon of the letter A shaped with a pencil, ruler & pen.

  • How do i find and delete the hidden .trashes folder on my sd card?

I just recently bought a new canon 600d camera and i also bought a new 16gb sd card for it.
I use this camera for videos mostly.
My card seems to fill up incredibly quickly and when i empty it, it stills says about 600mb is taken up. I looked it up and apparently its because of a hidden folder called .trashes? I cant figure out how to find this folder or how to delete it.
Ive seen a few people say you can find it somehow using finder, but my issue is that my camera doesnt show up in the finder, a program called image capture comes up and i can import all my videos from there perfectly fine.
this problem is really annoying me because even when my sd card says its 849mb full, after recording two or three clips, my camera stops recording automatically due to the card being almost full even though its nowhere near full and i have 14.9 gb left?
Im really confused and i just need some guidance on how to go about finding this .trashes file and deleting it.
As you can tell im not too great with technology so any help would be appreciated, thanks.
apologies if this question isnt in the right place, ive never really used this before.

i imported all the files in my sd card to my mac and then i did format the card, it says 160kb is used up.
I also did find files in the trash when i connected the camera to the macbook and deleted them all, there is nothing left in the camera or the trash and it still says 160kb used :/

  • How to get trash folder in finder?

How to get trash folder in finder?

    Hello Neil,
Here's a challenging adjunct to the physical location of trash question above.  I moved home folder of my login to a different partition (data only) which all worked fine.  Then I trashed the original home folder which was on the Boot OSX partition (just to be tidy as it was not needed any longer) now the MBA says "cannot logon to this user for the time being".  So I clearly need to return the original home directory back from trash to my logon folder (eve though it is not really used).
However, how can I access my original logon user directory in trash when I am unable to logon?  Logged on to the root directory and using your go to folder solution above I have found the trash for root but I am unable to find the trash for my actual logon (which contains the trashed home directory)!
Any thoughts sir?  Thanks for your help.

  • My Library folder on my User (Home) is missing I know it is somewhere as the printer profiles in it are present when i go to an application. I just updated to Lion. where can I find the folder?

I just updated to Lion. I cannot find my Library Folder in my User folder. I know the information is there as I can see printer profiles stored in there in an application, but I cannot find the folder. Could it have been moved during upgrade?

It is not missing, it is now hidden.  In Finder option-click Go in the menubar and it will appear under Home.

I have searched Finder, Trash and the applications folder but i can't find where it is kept.  I want to put the icon for Dashboard back in the dock - how can i do this?

The combo update may replace anything you have inadvertently deleted.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
You can reapply it over the top of any previously downloaded version.  I see that your profile says 10.6.8.
Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.

  • Why are my deleted emails only staying in the trash folder for a month? How can I find older deleted emails?

my trash folder is only showing emails back to April 28th.

Does the account use POP, or IMAP?
If IMAP, your Trash folder is almost certainly on the server and as such, may be subject to the email provider's policy on trash/deleted folders.
Check what your provider's rules are on trash retention. You may be permitted to adjust the period for which they are held. Alternatively you can set Thunderbird to use a trash folder under your Local Folders account which will be on your own hard disk and thus invisible to your email provider.
And of course check the settings in Thunderbird for what to do with deleted messages. You can set it to automatically remove messages after a defined period. Look under Tools|Account Settings for deletion settings.
OTOH, if you're routinely deleting messages and relying on them being kept indefinitely, I'd suggest you rethink your procedure and not delete them until you're confident you no longer need them. Recycle bins, waste bins and the like are the first to go when disk space gets tight. Most email providers have a policy of automatically removing messages over a certain age from the Deleted folder, specifically to manage and reduce disk space usage.

  • How do you erase email from "trash" folder???

Is there some way to erase email from the "trash" folder beside having to delete each one singularly.  That means to get rid of email you have do each one TWICE.  On my I touch there is a button to erase all at once.  Not on PALM that I can find.

  • Mail from Trash folder moves itself back to Inbox

I've been having a bit of an odd problem lately -- items from my Trash automatically re-appear in my inbox. It seems to have started with an e-mail from about three months ago, and whenever I click away to another folder (Sent, Drafts, etc.) and then click back to Inbox, another e-mail (in sequence according to date) will re-appear.
I have been simply deleting the revived e-mails (assuming they would go back to the trash folder), but I just found out that if I delete one of these e-mails, they are deleted for good.
My trash folder contains approximately 2700 e-mails, and I know I need to look for a mail archival program, but the problem isn't related to a "limit" on e-mails in a folder as far as I can tell.
Anybody have any idea as to what might cause this problem?
Any info would sure be appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    DAVE
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Is there a reason you keep accumulating mail in the Trash mailbox and never permanently erase it? Using the Trash for archiving purposes just doesn't make sense to me. Why don't you create a custom "On My Mac" mailbox folder for that?
The following is what I would recommend to someone having your problem in "normal" circumstances. Your situation is clearly unusual, so don't blame me if it doesn't work for you
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Mail/. You may want to make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    3. Locate the Envelope Index file and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted later if this fixes the problem).
    4. Launch Mail again and let it finish re-indexing everything -- it says it's "importing", but it's just re-creating the Envelope Index file.

  • Trash will not delete from trash folder! What can cause this effect?

Trash will not delete from trash folder! What can cause this effect?

u can actually force it to delete, oviously i assume you dont have the application or data etc open neware else?
try restarting your computer, go into finder close all your open applications etc, servers, **** even clear your data in your web browser, do a disk utility check and verify your drives and repair em if nessicary.
as chamar suggested look at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html
i had the same problem before but with a good 5-10 minutes of googling i was able to solve it..
    best of luck

  • Error Message: Can't Find iTunes Folder, Can't Create It

All was well until suddenly iTunes (9.02) won't open...and earlier versions won't let themselves be
    installed (OS 10.4.11 on G4).
I used Norton to unerase any folder with a name like Music or iTunes...to no avail.
I'd hate to think I have to reinstall my OS. The trouble began shortly after I accidentally disconnected
my iPod Touch without ejecting its icon in iTunes.
Can anyone offer a solution? Thanks!

You don't need to reinstall the OS to reinstall iTunes.
Go to HD>Library>Receipts - remove the iTunesX.pkg to the trash.
Drag your iTunes app to the trash. B/U your iTunes Library and .xml files. B/U your iTS purchases.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/itunes802formac.html
Find the folder - Previous iTunes Libraries in the iTunes folder - in there is a copy of your previous libraries files- select the one that is the date of your upgrade to iTunes 9. Make a copy and rename it - iTunes Library - replace the file named the same in the iTunes Folder. Any additions to iTunes under iTunes 9 will not be in the data base so you will have to add them back once iTunes is open again.
When iTunes upgrades your iTunes it creates a copy of the original Library file before updating - that way if there is a problem you have a Library file to revert to - however when it upgrades it changes something so the older version will not work with the new version. Before launching the downgraded version of iTunes you need to copy/rename/replace the iTunes Library file that is created when you install the downgraded version of iTunes.
    Repair permissions with Disk Utility.
Open iTunes - if all is well you can empty the trash.
