Finder[187]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "1

Please what this means?

joan19,
at this point, your choices are either:
live with this message appearing in the Console, and hope that a future Software Update fixes it;
reïnstall Mavericks on your Mac mini, and hope that the message does not reäppear in the Console;
restore the old disk with your previous version of OS X into your Mac mini.
The “FIXME” string strongly suggests that someone at Apple did not incorporate thorough error handling into this piece of their IOUnserialize code, so Apple will need to take some action to resolve this situation in Mavericks.

    All,
    I am having a very odd problem.
    I have recently setup a Mac OS X Mavericks Server for the purposes of NetRestore.
    Everything setup fine, no issues whatsoever and the server has been running non-stop for the past 78 days.
    I've already imaged about 100 MacBook pros off of this server without a problem.
    This morning I come in, start up an MBP that needs to be imaged and it sees the netrestore volumes and attemps to boot to it
    then stops and doesn't go anywhere.
    I've had my NBI's on an external firewire 800 drive (1TB Lacie Rugged) and its been working fine.
    I've checked my logs numerous times and the only error I can find is: servermgrd[584]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "v\035\363d".
    The exact same error keeps repeating every 10 seconds or so.
    I read in another forum that sometime Mavericks Server doesn't like NBI images on external volumes, so I moved them to the standard /Library/Netboot/NetBootSP0 folder on the boot volume and turned off the external drive.
    I'm able to NetRestore again now, but the process is far slower then it was previsously and the error above still persists.
    I've rebooted the server, stopped and restarted the services, made sure no changes have been made on the network, and fully updated the server via software update.
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

    I post some other error.
    I don't understand why some times when I reboot I don't get any errors and why some Ive this:

  • SleepServicesD[68]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, ""

    I have an iMac late 2013 which hangs after one night in sleep mode. The only way to get it back working again is to power cycle it (5 sec power button)
    It is a late 2013 21'' imac with 16GB RAM, and a fusion drive, with Mavericks installed.
    When I look in the console the following entries appear just before the reboot:
    10/10/14 00:45:17,000 kernel[0]: [0x2e0685000, 0x100000]
    10/10/14 00:45:17,000 kernel[0]: [0x2e07c5000, 0x80000]

    10/10/14 08:15:58,000 bootlog[0]: BOOT_TIME 1412921758 0
    A lot of kernel messages, this is always the same. Just before the kernel messages appear these messages:
    10/10/14 00:44:50,000 kernel[0]: AppleThunderboltNHI::prePCIWake - power up complete - took 0 us
    10/10/14 00:44:50,000 kernel[0]: AppleThunderboltHAL::earlyWake - complete - took 0 milliseconds

    10/10/14 00:45:17,000 kernel[0]: [0x1530d2000, 0x13000]
    These messages are always Thunderbold related. When I look in to the logs these events occur regularly, also when the system does not hangs over night. Today I discovered the following. Just before the crash there is an IOUnserialize error that is related to Sleep :
    10/10/14 00:44:21,874 SleepServicesD[68]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "P ".
    Just after restart it generated several similar error, as:
    10/10/14 08:16:19,760 configd[18]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "P ".
    I am not sure but it seems like that the crashes are more likely to occur when both me and my wife are logged in to the system. My wife is using Parallels desktop 9 with windows 8.1. And it seems that the hangs occur the night after she worked for multiple hour on the virtual machine, but I have to stress that this is just a feeling, I am not sure if that is the cause of the problems. Maybe working for extensive periods is the cause not the virtual machine.
    I am wondering did anyone other experience this and what worked for you? I am tired of the hard reboots. Today even the keyboard had crashed (apple wired keyboard with numerical input) I had to unplug it for a while (several minutes) before it started working again. The USB ports were fine after reboot. I tested them with another wired keyboard, while the other one was connected and not working. Switching ports did not help, thus that problem was really keyboard related.
    I hope someone has any ideas.
    Thanks in advance!

    To be sure I reinstalled Mavericks again, the first night exactly the same. This morning the imac did not wake up from sleep again. I checked the logs after a hard reboot. Exactly the same issue as above
    It contained multiple FIXME entries. The SleepService was the first FIXME that appeared in the log and is followed by multiple FIXMEs from various sources:
    11/10/14 03:05:29,052 SleepServicesD[71]: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, "Q

    See this message a week ago in the console. I've upgrade my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 the last three years vom SL to Lion, Ml and now Mavericks. After seeing this message, I decide for a clean install.
    All runs fine, but the message appears in the console and commes with every click in the finder.app. What does the message say and what can I do?

    I have a Macbook Pro 2008 13' unibody, currently running OS 10.7.5.  I believe this is caused by my 3rd-party battery replacement.  If you have a 3rd-party battery, try removing it and running on AC power and see if the problem remains.

  • "Itunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted" - Ipod Classic

    I recently noticed little tiny jumps or skips appearing in songs on my 80GB ipod classic, so decided to restore it. Having done this I got the following message:
    "Itunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
    Reconnecting it just brings up the same message. I have Itunes 9.0 and have noticed others here describing problems between the latest versions of Itunes and their iPods.
    Is anyone else experiencing similar problems to mine, or do I just have a faulty iPod? Sadly it's out of warranty, but it is just over 2 years old so I'll be pretty disgusted if it's already broken, as I've looked after it very well.
    Any advice much appreciated - thank you!

    Ok, I updated Itunes to 9.03, and so far it seems to have rectified the problem i.e. I'm no longer getting ipod corrupted message, and I can transfer all my songs onto it as normal. Whether it will solve the little ticks I'm hearing in songs throughout my library on the iPod, I've yet to see.
    Sorry and good luck to those having similar problem that cannot find such an easy solution.

  • ITunes has detected an ipod that appers to be corrupted

    "iTunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted" is the error message I continue to get with iTunes v.7.0.1 in Windows XP. My iPod will load on my iMac and let me add songs. I wanted to start using my iPod with my PC so I restored it on the PC. It shows up as Removable Disk (M:) under My Computer. I have uninstalled iTunes and have read just about everything I can to figure out the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Did you do it using the latest iPod updater? In fact, you may want to find a past version of the updater and not use the utility bundled in iTunes 7.0.1.

  • Error message "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted"

    Everything used to work just fine until recently. On my Windows XP Home SP3 laptop, with iTunes (version 9.0.2.25) already open, I connect my 5th Generation iPod Nano and get the following message in iTunes:
    "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."
    If I plug the iPod into the computer without first starting iTunes, the Windows ‘Auto Play’ message comes up immediately then disappears and then the following message appears:
    "Your iPod needs to be formatted for use with Windows. Would you like to run iTunes to restore your iPod Now?"
    Otherwise, the iPod functions normally when not connected in iTunes. I can play the music, videos, and record videos with no problems.
    The troubleshooting steps I took were:
    I performed a reset of the Nano by first sliding the hold switch on/off a few cycles, leaving switch off (no orange showing), then pressed and held the Menu + Select button until the Apple logo appeared. Then I tried it in iTunes again; no such luck, same error. I then did a reset again, this time with the iPod connected to an AC power source; still no luck. I tried the reset numerous times and it didn’t help.
    Next, I ran the diagnostics by pressing and holding the Menu + Select buttons immediately followed by the Select + Reverse buttons. I stepped through all the diagnostics tests and all tests passed as far as I could tell (there was no errors reported).
    After this, I tried it in iTunes again and still no luck.
    I even tried the iPod on my Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) machine and it behaved the same way. The version of iTunes on that machine was at an earlier version when I first tried it there. I then upgraded iTunes to the latest version but that didn’t help either.
    I can sync my iPod Touch and 2nd gen Nano without any problems.
    Sorry about be long winded about this but I am wondering if anyone else may have other suggestions. I want to try and avoid a restore if possible because I have some videos I recorded that I would like to get off the iPod. I’m not concerned about my music files as I have them always backed up but didn’t get the videos off yet.

    I am having this same problem with my brand new Mac Pro. It seems to be tied to the computer awaking from sleep (no I am not leaving the iPod connected while sleep... I am referring to waking the computer from sleep and then connecting iPod as opposed to restarting the computer and then connecting the iPod). In other words, if you are getting this error message, try ejecting the iPod, restart your computer, then connect the iPod and see if the error message goes away. For me it does, but I only get one shot at it, if I eject the iPod and then reconnect it, the error message returns. This happens on both iPods I have. I have rebooted (hold menu-select) and gone to disc mode (hold select-play) and the error message remains. The only way it goes away is to reboot the computer, then I get one shot at hooking up an iPod.
    I NEVER had nor get this error message when I connect to the Windows PC that I started with. Perhaps the iPod does not like moving from PC to Mac?

  • I am getting an 'iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted" message from my 80GB iPod Classic.

    I am getting an 'iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted" message from my 80GB iPod Classic. It plays music fine and has 2.5 GB of space left. I get the message on multiple PC's and USB ports. I have tried resetting it and using Disk Mode. Any advice?

    In my Computer folder
    Right Click the iPod
    Select properties->tools->error check
    tick both fix filesystem error and surface scan.
    Press  OK
    May take about 2 hours to complete.
    PS: dont be in a hurry to disconnect your iPod, as future recurrence will come, as the HD is almost full, do back up your iTunes library, before your iPod HD gives the dreaded fatal Red X sign.

  • Error-Itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted

    When I connect the ipod to the computer it says "Itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore the ipod before it can be used with itunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting again." I disconnected and reconnected many times, I have restarted, check for updates, and finally restored my ipod. It has deleted everything off of my ipod then I get a do not disconnect message that never goes away. What should I do please advise?

    Bummer! Have you tried resetting the ipod while it's plugged into the PC?

    You mentioned restarting, but I'm not sure what you restarted - itunes, I guess?

  • ITunes has detected an iPod that appears to be currupted.

    About a week ago my iPod completely froze while I was trying to use it. Since then nothing has worked right. It doesn't seem to charge and it doesn't connect and disconnect correctly. When I try to connect my iPod it either doesn't show up in iTunes at all or I get the following error message "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore iPod before it can be used iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod." After the error message my iPod immediately disappears from the left hand side. After reading through the users guide I figured out how to get my iPod into disc mode and was able to restore it that way. However, I am still receiving the same error message. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My iPod is only a couple of months old.

    I am experiencing a similar problem. My ipod turned on successfully but since then it has stayed frozen. According to the screen it is on hold but it isn't.I've tried charging it, but the message 'this ipod seems to be corrupt' comes up. I've tried to reset it but a message comes up saying it is not possible. I'm sorry I am not able to answer your problem but could you please help me by telling me how long the warranty is as i want to get it sorted in the apple store tomorrow and possibly exchange it.
    Many thanks, I hope your ipod is soon fixed.
