Finder -600 error. Can only open Finder in background (open -g /path/) after force quit

Hey there,
I had multiple instances of finder and it kept relaunching so I force killed it from activity monitor. Now Finder, disk image mounter, and trash are all non functional from the front end and the desktop shortcuts are gone. After that if you tried to open it with the icon on the dock (right click icon > open) or in terminal it gave error code -600, the application "Finder" can't be opened. This is not the same as -10814, which i get only if i try to open it as a bundle (open -b Finder).
I can run Finder in the background using open -g /path/ and the desktop restores and I can get to trash and finder with right clicks from dock icons. =/
And that's all I got. I don't know a whole lot else about the system and I am kind of afraid to restart.
If it matters, I recently had a weird hardware thing where my keyboard, trackpad, and all peripheral usb mice/keyboards would not work and I had to do recovery because recovery mode was the only way I could use my mouse/keyboard.
Thanks for any insight!

Do a backup.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

  • ICal error - can't see the calendars on opening...

iCal error - can't see the calendars on opening... unless i change the view - but then still the portlet in the top left hand corner remains blank.
Re-installed the whole OSx system from original disks and still the same problem.
cleared out the cache files, including trying to delete the metadata files... taken to my local Apple Centre (Academy) but no sucess so far.
Any ideas? Is it because i have around 8 calendars? Is that too many?
Could it be 'cos I sync with Missing Sync for my Palm TX?
    H E L P !!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

When a user launches iCal, they may have one of the following symptoms:
    * When iCal is launched the calendar is blank -- no calendars are listed on the left and no events appear in the day/week/month views
    * Switching views allows all events to appear but the calendars on the left are still missing
    * User can create a new event and designate a calendar but when the event is saved it cannot be seen
    * Clicking in the blank space where the calendars are supposed to be has no effect.
This issue is a Sync Services issue and not directly related to The Missing Sync. Mark/Space has identified a couple of solutions to this problem that others have reported. For more information, see: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060207074628694
    1) Quit iCal
    2) Locate the folder, User/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources/ and delete the contents
    3) After deleting the files from this folder, lock the "Sources" folder. Do this by navigating up one level and selecting the "Sources" folder. Perform a "Get Info" (either through the "File" menu or by pressing Command-I with the "Sources" folder selected) then click the lock icon.
    4) Launch iCal and your calendars should reappear. Note that the relaunch of iCal will create a default 'Home' and 'Work' calendar, so make sure none of your calendars have the same names as the default .
    Do some backups first
    Follow those simple steps
    5) Go to Address Book, click on 'File' menu and choose 'Back up Address Book'. Go to iCal, click on 'File' menu and choose 'Back up database'.
    6) Go to Missing Sync and double click on the Backup Conduit and set it to backup all databases. Then run the sync with just that Backup conduit selected, disable all other conduits.
    7) Go to: /Users/<user name>/Documents/Palm/Users/<hotsync name>/ now hold the 'ctrl' key and click on the /Backups/ folder. Choose the option to 'Create Archive of "Backups"'. This is to safeguard your backed up data in case anything goes wrong.
Now 'Reset Sync History' using the iSync preferences option. The first sync will likely be slower.
    8) Launch iSync
    9) Click on the iSync menu
    10) Choose Preferences (make sure the "Enable syncing on this computer" is checked)
    11) Click the 'Reset Sync History' button. Read and follow the onscreen directions.
    12) This may launch iCal. Also the status of the reset is showing in the iSync display. When the reset is complete quit both iSync and iCal.
Launch Missing Sync and enable the Mark/Space Events and Tasks conduits and set them to Desktop overwrite Handheld. Disable all other conduits.
Then sync, when you do, you will get a dialog box with an orange iSync icon on it. Check the box to erase the device, then click the 'Allow' button. It will overwrite your device. You will get one for events, one for tasks, and one for contacts. The next time you sync .mac or other devices that sync with iSync like an iPod, you will get these same dialog boxes for their databases and you should check the box and click 'Allow' in those cases as well.
If you press the don't allow button you will need to reboot your computer.

Appreciate your help Ian and others.   I have since uninstalled FCS and reinstalled FCXP only to get the same thing. Loading FCXP stalls at "Looking for Compressor Support".  When I first downloaded FCXP from the App store I didn't notice that FCS was being placed in it's own folder.  It's not something I did manually.  Although moved into it's own folder with FCXP on the same drive.  I was not able to open FCS apps. They would load and then "quit unexpectantly".  They opened just fine before I downloaded FCXP.  Do I need to purchase Compressor so that FCXP recognizes it? It seems this is where it stalls. It doesn't explain however why my computer "FREEZES" while doing this.  I am in the process of re-installing Lion to see if this helps, otherwise I am at a complete loss.

    Hi,

Seems this always just leads us to problems...
Strange Sun Java Security Team just won't do anything to help us deploy quite easily on one of the most widely-spread platform ( despite we don't like them that much it's MS servers (2000 and 2003) )
Anyway if one could help... on one of the two issues Thanks

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

  • Finder 600 error/not displaying files

Finder giving me a 600 error, if it opens it won't display files, especially those on a network hard drive. It will let me see most folders though, again, if I can get past the 600 error. iTunes stopped working for a while but the second I clicked into these forums it worked!
I've seen some similar threads but they didn't fix my issue. FYI I'm running the latest OS.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Burning error, can only burn 3 minutes of video on disk.

I have wasted 6 disks by now. The burning ends much earlier than normal, then got a message saying burning/? ( sorry can't remmber) error.
The disk still can be played but it contains only 2'50-3'00 of video. Tried other projects, same results.
I got this problem after burning a few photo CDs, does this matter?
Also from the very beginning of my experience with iDVD, I have been having a problem with audio encodeing, many times the programmes just stopped when encoding audio and I had to force quit. But next time it may go through without any trouble, I mean the same imovie project. Confused!
    Many thanks.

Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • White screen after force quit Finder

The message on my MacBook Pro was that disk space needed to be freed up...tried to move files to the trash but just stayed "in progress" for hours...online support suggested a force quit of Finder...after reboot, I only see a white screen of death.
So many pictures that haven't been backed up...help!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try starting in safe mode by holding the shift key until the grey Apple logo appears. If it starts like this open Disk Utility, select the drive and do a verify disk.
If that shows any errors insert the original installation dvd and restart holding the c key until the grey Apple logo appears. On the 1st installation screen select language & on the next locate DU from the top menu. This time run 'Repair Disk'. If it shows repairs completed rerun it until it shows no errors/repairs necessary. Then restart normally.
    Report back with your results.

  • Entering description of event into iCal, pasted too much text into event, responded with The server responded with an error. Preferences is greyed out, and window pop up comes up every time I open iCal and doesn't go away. Force quit, still opens. Help?

While pasting event description into iCal, accidently pasted too much text, causing "The server responded with an error" pop up. This pop us includes the event description, but because of the mass amount of text, the window shoots off the screen to the bottom, so if there was an exit red "x" available, it isn't visible or accessible. The iCal>preferences is greyed out and I have force quit and it pops up each time I use iCal. Is this even fixable?

  • While typing a doc in Word, the spinning wheel appeared and froze the Word document.  I had another Word doc open at the time.  I tried to force quit, but it didn't work.  I would like to save it before losing my work, but the spinning wheel blocks me.

While creating a Word doc, the spinning wheel appeared and won't go away.  Another Word doc was open at same time.  How do I get this fixed while saving my work?

    rollrock wrote:
How do I get this fixed while saving my work?
    Basically, you don't.
The 'spinning wheel' is simply an indicator that an operation is taking longer than it should. It doesn't say anything about why, or even if it's an error or not. If it's in Word, it could be that the app is hung, or it could be that it is waiting for some kind of user input, or input from another app. (My bet would be on the former.) You could go into Activity Monitor, identify the process that's making it wait, kill it, cross your fingers and hope that it would generate an error that would cause Word to return control to the user (you). If you had the expertise, that is, and the moon were in right quadrant.
Realistically, your only option is to force-quit Word. Once that is done, if AutoRecovery was on, then, with luck, you could recover much of your work. Here
    <http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahnd.html>
you'll find a quick overview of AutoRecovery and how it works.
If it wasn't on (it should be on by default), then you're out of luck. Chalk it up to experience, turn it on, and back to the grindstone.

  • ARD 3.6.1 freezing during scans, now won't open after force quit

    All,
ive been an ardent user of ARD since the beginning, but with ARD 3.5 and above, i've noticed the console freezing more often.
I 'm presently running ARD 3.6  on a mid 2009 13 inch MBP running 10.8.1. I have about 1000 machines managed by this unit.
Yesterday while scanning subnets, it froze... I force quit ARD, and now, i'm getting a spinning cursor after launch in every account on the Mac. Never displays the Computers window.
I've repaired permissions, run disk utility, and even reset ACLS on my home folder to see if it was a i/o or permissions error.  My keychain verifies.
I ran the 3.6.1 updater as a last ditch attempt, and it did nothing...
Any thoughts? I'd hate to scrap all the user's i have already captured with this mac and start again.....
    thanks in advance

Hold down the Option key while choosing to Empty Trash to delete locked files.
As I said before, reinstalling AppleWorks rarely solves any problems with AppleWorks. 99+% of the time the trouble lies in the user's account, either full recent items & AutoSave folders or corrupt preferences.
The message you got trying to update to AppleWorks 6.2.9 means the update can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reason is that the language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. The most reliable links are on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
Whenever you do an update of the system software &/or AppleWorks, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences).
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks' preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences & delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Then, in this same Preferences folder, find and open the folder AppleWorks Preferences, then delete all of the enclosed files (except the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.
