Finder acting weird on AFP shares

Hi everyone,
I am using an OS X 10.8.5 Server with mostly 10.6.8 Clients. The clients usually open, save, copy to and from AFP shares provided by the server. Sometimes it happens that a client gets thrown out of a folder it is currently viewing on the AFP share. Once this behaviour starts it is near impossible to navigate down on the folder hierarchy since you get teleported back 1 to 3 levels. The number of levels depends on how fast you managed to drill down before you get thrown back. So an example would be:
The client views folder A on /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1
You start to navigate to a folder residing inside Folder1. If you now wait for a few seconds Finder will throw you out and back to Folder1. If you mangage to drill a few levels down really fast you might make it to /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1/data/more/here. But then you immediately are teleported back to /Volumes/AFPShare/Stuff/Folder1.
From this point it won’t ever work again until you unmount and remount the share. Sometimes even a reboot of the client is neccessary. It happens with ~10 clients so it is not just one isolated client acting weird. On the Server side I did not notice anything wrong or weird happening. There are no backups, syncs or other tasks running on the server while this occurs. It seems to happen more often when you are using list view (cmd+2), but I have already seen it with column view, too.
I’ve read about similar problems with SMB, but I am really stumped at where to look next. I already ruled out that it’s just with 1 client Mac. Deleting .DS_Store files did not help (not that I counted on that one).
Another weird thing in addition to that is that sometimes the Finder shows folders twice or even more often. These are exactly named the same. Sometimes they disappear when you want to click on one of them.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
Björn

Oh great! I had hoped it would go away. I suspect AFP to be the culprit. Since 10.9 defaults to the new SMB2 it might help to explicitly connect via SMB instead.
I am not sure since it’s been a while, but I believe the problem was happening less often if you disable both preview options using cmd+j in the Finder. Might be worth a try…

  • Finder acting weird lately for certain features (Bluetooth, Adobe illustrator etc.)

    Hi Everyone,
I have recently come across a new problem with my macbook pro.
While working with certain applications the finder is acting weird.
Adobe Illustrator - On trying to place a certain document from the desktop onto the art board on my AI file I tried to go the traditional way of placinf it by opening file > clicking on place > (finder pops open). Now, as soon as it came up it took just about 2 seconds for it to disappear. And it has been happening continuosly since then.
Bluetooh - to transfer some files from bluetooth on mac to my cellphone I chose the option: Send files to device...
Same thing happened again. Finder popped open and vanished in no time. Only this time I was completely unable to open it again at all.
The finder works perfectly everywhere else till now (atleast nothing wrong yet) but this is worrying me a bit as I have been reading about certain news of OS Mavericks being attacked by some flashback virus.
I would be grateful If anyone could help me with this.
    Thankyou,
    John Tushar

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.BluetoothFileExchange.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.
Since I don't use Adobe Illustrator, I don't know which .plist might be causing the problem. You could try doing the above with all Adobe Illustrator .plists.

  • Finder beachballs when accessing AFP share...

    Hello Everyone...
I have been plagued by a recent inability to open AFP sharepoints, from two MacBooks using the Connect to Server menu item running OS X Lion. This just started happening a few days ago, and I've spent my fair-share of hours trying to resolve it with no luck.
This doesn't seem to be an issue with my wife's G4 running Leopard, nor my spare Mac running Snow Leopard, both fully patched respectively. The same sharepoint opens quite fast upon authentication on these systems.
Note: The server is running Snow Leopard Server, with only 5 clients connecting to it.
The sharepoint does end up opening on Lion, however it takes about 6 minutes to do so. After it mounts on the desktop, it works flawlessly!
    Thoughts??
    Thanks!

I have also tried Techtool and Repair Permissions.

  • Help! Finder acting weird!

My finder is going beserk! it keep quitting, restarting, quitting, restarting and so on! It causes my computer to switch between applications every 2 seconds, the dock icon fading and restarting desktop items/macintosh HD icon disapearing and flashing up. Help!

What's most likely happening is that the Preference file for the Finder (Home/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.finder.plist) is corrupted and when the Finder tried to read it, it crashes. Finder automatically restarts, so it crashes again and so on.
The solution is to trash the preference file, the difficulty is doing it without a file browser (as the Finder keeps crashing.) There are ways of doing this in the Terminal of course, but for those (like me) who are not comfortable in the Terminal, it's handy to have another File Browser round. Personally I use PathFinder (http://www.cocoatech.com).
Another way to do it is if you have a second mac, to connect the machines tpgether in FireWire Target Mode. That is, connect the two Macs with a FireWire Cable and restart the troublesome one holding down the 'T' key. This will turn it (temporarily) into a firewire external hard disk, and you can then navigate through the disk to remove the file using the Mac.

  • Finder acting weird

Hi, anyone knows what is wrong with my finder? The problem is a little hard to explain but i recorded a movie, i think it says about everything.
    download: http://www.sendspace.com/file/bigxzt

I have now seen this problem come up a number of times. It always seem to involve either something mounted from a Windows server, or a Fat32 external drive. Some people report unmounting and remounting cleared up the name confusion. You could also try relaunching the Finder:
Hold down the Option key and click hold on the Finder icon in the Dock
From the fly out menu select "Relaunch"
This will close all open Finder windows and cause the Desktop to "blink" briefly. I use this occasionally when the Finder is being especially slow about updating an open window. Whether it will help with this problem I don't know, I have not had it myself. If it works it would be quicker than unmounting and remounting the drive.

  • Suddenly no Software Opens and finder acts weird. Hacked??

    Hi, I have a Macbook pro 15" 8,2 with Lion 10.7.3
What happened is that suddenly all programs stopped working,
    -Photoshop
    -Skype
    -Archicad
    -Safari (opens and crashes)
-Firefox (opens and after sometime it gives a script error and crashes)
-Sophos Anti-virus is running in the backround, but everytime I open preferences it crashes... the same as others.
    -Parallels
    -Clean My Mac
All the above and more that I didn't opened, syntoms: they lagged the all system when starting, crashed by themselves and issued reports, that I've sended.
-Finder: any file I try to right click, when I right-click the finder crashes and restarts (and if files are moving from one folder to another they stop)
I've rebooted severall times, and the problem persisted, even in single-user or safe-mode.
Mail, calendar, contacts and Disk Utility open with no problems.
Started OS X LIon recovery USB and failed (apple logo passed to a forbiden logo)
For the moment I succesfully backedup everything, and the only thing I could do was was reboot and do the cmd+r ... recovery assistant.
It booted, downloaded Lion and installed it above the other one, has soon it rebooted, everything worked fine again, supposely for the moment.
Now I'm going to boot with OS X Lion Install in a USB, format the HD completely (I use HTFS+ with Password) and install Lion from scratch.
Now, I don't know if this was an Issue with the latest safari update or 10.7.3, or ... and this is what I'm afraid of, with so much level of security:
-Firewall, encrypted HD and account, sophos anti-virus, is it possible by I've been connected to a public wi-fi, to have been target of hackers?
At home I use the Internet with the Network cable, and sometimes the wi-fi, it depends.
    Thanx in advance.

For a start uninstall Sophos anti-virus. Not needed and known to cause many conflicts, then we can work from there. Make sure you uninstall it with the uninstaller that came with it or as per the developers instructions at their site.

  • Discover AFP shares

I'm looking to find the list of AFP shares within a script, and so far I can discover the systems on my network that are serving AFP shares. How can I retrieve the actual share names?
    What I have so far:
    $ dns-sd -B afpovertcp.tcp .
    Browsing for afpovertcp.tcp
Timestamp A/R Flags if Domain Service Type Instance Name
    21:02:13.406 Add 3 6 local. afpovertcp.tcp. molokai
    21:02:13.406 Add 3 6 local. afpovertcp.tcp. kauai
    21:02:13.406 Add 2 6 local. afpovertcp.tcp. niihau
    $ dns-sd -L molokai afpovertcp.tcp .
    Lookup molokai.afpovertcp.tcp.local
    8:23:20.703 molokai.afpovertcp.tcp.local. can be reached at molokai.local.:548

You can get the list of volumes (or "shares") on an AFP server only after you have logged in to the server. Even if the server allows guest access, you must first login as a guest.
I don't know any command line tool which can login to AFP servers and get the list of volumes.

I believe I've seen a similar problem in my development.
This was occurring in Beta 2 and I believe I had it happen in Beta 3 as well.
This might be a way to repro the issue?
    1.  Have several collections.
    2.  Follow Robin's post to combine the collections into one:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/3c55b873-a0c7-4cc8-9bab-eaf809f62ab0/exporting-data?forum=projectsiena
    3. Change one of the underlying collections - add another column to the collection without using the function 'addcolumn' for example)
What I saw happening is that the 'master collection' would say there was a problem.  To fix it, I simply had to drop off the last part of the function and then add it back (similar to what Ptr is saying in his posting).
The function in this example looked like this:  Collect(MasterBackup, Import1!Data)
By removing Import1!Data and then typing it back in the problem would be resolved.
I hope this helps to add some insight -

  • Finder crashing in AFP share

    Hello,
We're having some really strange issues at work with an AFP share.
    Setup:
    Mac OS X 10.4.7 clients (including a G5, MacBook Pro, iMac G4)
Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 sharing files via AFP
    How to replicate:
User's login to the AFP share, navigate to a certain folder, and then finder "locks" (spinning beachball). All attempts to relaunch finder fail. The only things that fixes finder is restarting the machine. This does not fix getting to the folder.
Every directory in this part of the AFP share have the same permissions. I have not tried to navigate to the directory on the server because we would have to get everyone to log off and stop working.
    Thanks for help in advance,
    Rob
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

All of the users are connecting via ethernet. We typically have about 10-15 users connected to a Mac OS X server with unlimited clients. Everyone in the office connects to this machine, but this happens even when we do not
Initially we were having trouble with a folder that had photoshop files (.psd), but now we're having trouble with the folder up from that (which is basically a project folder that then has several folders beneath it).
I copied the files that one of our employees needed in Windows to another folder (created in Windows) above the directory we are having trouble with. She was able to access the folder and the files. Windows connections are through SMB (and all the windows machines that we have are able to navigate to these folders).
For the clients, unforunately, force quit doesn't seem to handle finder correctly.

  • Copy from AFP share to AFP share (via VPN-Connection) - stupid?

    Hi there
We set up an OS X server in a remote facility and are connecting to it over a VPN connection (Netgear Firewall).
Everything works fine, there's only one annoying issue: if I want to copy a file from a mounted AFP share (share1) to another mounted AFP share (share2) - both of them residing on the same server - it seems to me that the files are being copied first to my local client and then back to the server again - instead of being copied directly from and to the server...
Is there anything I can do about this issue or am I wrong? Is this a so called "feature" of the Finder itself?
Thanks for any suggestions and regards
    Roman

Thanks for your thoughts about higher vs. lower latency networking - I totally agree. It might be a quite uncommon setup; as the server is being "housed" in a datacenter with quite tough restrictions: not only do they charge us for the power consumption, but also for the traffic being generated - which is 250 GB a month. They're providing an uplink with 10mbps (guaranteed), burstable to 100mbits.
Anyway, we're interested in keeping traffic low - hard to do if we cannot let end users do "common" tasks like moving files from one folder to another (of course, its a sharepoint - but they don't care).
What I'm looking for? Well, I think it will take hours to find out which part of the setup (AFP implementation of the server, AFP on the local machines, either of them on a particular version, the Finder in general...) actually might be responsible for this behavior. And maybe there's a "solution" (if you agree that this is actually a problem" buried somewhere

  • User Passwords Rejected on AFP share mounts?

User Passwords Rejected on AFP share mounts?
(OK, my last post got buried, and perhaps too long), try again. Very brief
    Issue:
After so many days, a User's AFP share password is rejected? What gives.
If you reset it, several days later, same thing, rejected.
Is Netinfo Database corrupted, what can / should be done?

I have deleted that troublesome user name and created a new name (for that user), just in case, in the re-creation of the same user name (after deletion) some corruption gets inherited.

    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Using Tiger Server, I have found that enabling ACLs, or Access Control Lists on the volume, and then specifying users and/or groups into the specific ACLs for the share point has been very helpful. Also note that 10.4.10 server seems to work better than 10.4.11, so if you haven't upgraded, don't go beyond 10.4.10. .11 seems to have some permissions issues and other problems.
I assume you are connecting to the server via AFS (i.e. Go > Connect to Server > ip address) and not SMB? SMB sometimes is more problematic about ownership. But either way, Mac or PC clients, it seems ACLs are the way to go.
Crazy as it seems, on my server, even if the owner is, say, admin, and the group with r/w permissions is, say, Prepress, it helps to specifically add the Prepress group to the ACL for that share. Then be sure to propagate the permissions down (unless you don't want to, for some reason). To do this, click the little gear icon and propagate all the permissions -- owner, group, acl, etc. down. This will take a bit of time depending on how much stuff you have. I also find that a server reboot can be helpful.
[[ All this said, 10.5.1 seems to do some crazy things, and I hope 10.5.2 addresses them. I have one machine (not user ID) that always creates a folder on a share with no permissions for anyone. Only from that Mac; the same login on another works just fine. Go figure]]

my keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random. "z" is the unresponsive character.
Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.

  • Importing from camera with iMovie onto computer with home on AFP share ...

I am trying to import a movie from a Sony Handycam into iMovie '08. iMovie can see the camera. The problem is that I cannot choose where to save the movie. I am only offered the choice of one of the two disks in my machine but am not given a chance to choose the actual folder location. Furthermore, the only choices are not write accessible to me.
I am guessing that iMovie doesn't want to import to my home/Movies because it is on an AFP share but why can't I choose the /Users/Shared folder (or any other location)?
Does the user that imports video into iMovie have to be an admin user?
The dialog that opens when I choose to import says "Save To:" but is not a proper (usual) file selection dialog. I only get two choices and they are internal disks not folders.
I know that Apple loves to work from the premise that they know best how I should do what I want to do but in this case I am actually totally prevented from doing what I want to do. I could actually log in as the admin user, import the movie (I'm assuming that would work) and then copy the files to my account. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Is there a way to specify the path for the import dialog?
(I am sitting on a gigabit ethernet network with a recent XServe and XServe RAID serving my home. I find it hard to believe that this couldn't handle a simple video import. It's not even HD.)

I am only offered the choice of one of the two disks in my machine but am not given a chance to choose the actual folder location. Furthermore, the only choices are not write accessible to me.
Other than the start-up drive user's account "Movies" folder, iMovie '08 only allows access to the "root" level of non-start-up drives which are the only areas it scans for "iMovie Events" folders during initialization. In addition, in order to access non-start-up drives, they must be formatted as "Mac Extended OS" drives.
I am guessing that iMovie doesn't want to import to my home/Movies because it is on an AFP share but why can't I choose the /Users/Shared folder (or any other location)?

Finder level file operations performed external to iMovie '08 tend to corrupt pointers/reference paths unless they emulate what iMovie itself does in which case the initialization scan may be able to fix some problems.

Not familiar with such use so I don't know if this would automatically limit your access to root level storage area.
