Finder Airport Flaw & Permissions

Files that are locked and permissions to only read changed, can be edited if the files is sent to another machine via finder's airport.
Also I can then out of some wierd reason edi a file, to which I only have "read" permissions.
Anyone know why?

so why are all permissions the same if it's a copy made with external hard drive, but not via airport?
I think you mean AirDrop. I would just be making up an answer, but since AirDrop is intended to make it easy to transfer files from one person's Mac to another's, it would make sense for the permissions of the copied files to be what the recipient expects.
when I for example use BatChmode the permissions are all set to read, yet i can still edit them with no password required.
Please create a test file on your Desktop using TextEdit. Close the file, then open the Finder Info window and set your permissions to "Read only." Can you still edit the file in TextEdit?

By default, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) will be broadcasting a wireless network with a name like, Apple Network NNNNNN. Be sure that the MBP is connected to this wireless network BEFORE trying to access with the AirPort Utility.
If this still doesn't work, try temporarily connecting the AX directly to the MBP by Ethernet, and then, try accessing it with the AirPort Utility.

  • Can't find AirPort 4.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.x software for Intel Mac Book

I have an Intel Mac Book and recently picked up a graphite AirPort on eBay without software. I installed the Installer updaters and Mac OSX 1.4.9 Combo update. I can not install AirPort software 2.0 - the error says I can not install on this machine. I went on the Apple site to find AirPort 4.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.x and can not locate the download. Any ideas?

    Hi Duane!
Thank you for welcoming me and yur information. I now see that I have the software, but I'm still having issues. I can't get the airport to see the internet. It knows there is an internet connection in the Network Assistant, but fails on the diagnostic. Further, after a restart, the Admin Utility does not list the IP address I the window.
I wondered if this was because of the software version update becausse it said it fixes an issue with Comcast (my ISP).
I wanted to use the Admin Utility to configure the Airport from scratch, but how can I if the base station is not in the list?

  • Can't find airport to turn it on, lost wifi and all addresses after a software upgrade

i can't find airport to turn it on, lost wifi and all ip addresses after a software upgrade on my iMac

    1. Does the WiFi icon in preferences have a yellow triangle with an exclamation point?
    2. Do you have physical access to the Airport router?
    3. WiFi through local cable company - does that mean you have a Cable company device which also has WiFi built-in AND also have an Airport router?
    4. Under About This Mac -> More Info -> System Report -> Network, do you see any wifi adapters? Usually a grey wifi icon in the menu bar implies that it has been turned off. If you Turn Wifi On in System Preferences -> Network -> WiFi, does the menu bar icon show you any change in the wifi icon?

  • Data folder can not be opened in finding " AirPort Time Capsule " The operation can not be completed because the original item for " data" does not exist .

    Hi
I have a " AirPort Time Capsule " (firmware 7.7.3) When I try to open the data folder in "finder". Then I got the message  " The operation can not be completed because the original item for " data" does not exist". I have a lot of data and I can understand why I get this message?
    Anyone who can help? Thanks..

Get a USB drive of 2TB or more.. assuming your TC is 2TB. Either preformatted Mac or plug into your Mac and format it standard Mac OS Extended Journaled in disk utility.
Do a full archive of the TC. You do this using airport utility. Do not click the erase disk.. I marked in green.. just the archive.. that is to backup the internal disk to the USB disk. It is not fast.. take it that the process will go at around 40-50GB/hr.
Once you complete the archive .. it is a direct image of the data on your TC.. you can then plug it into your computer directly.. and then try and open the files you lost.. if you cannot open them.. open disk utility and fix the permissions.
    http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/13/repair-disk-permissions-mac-os-x/
Or try the methods apple recommends..
OS X Yosemite: Set permissions for items on your Mac
It is possible to fix things on the USB drive because it is locally mounted.. but you cannot fix it on TC which is network drive.

  • Dell PC cannot find airport signal

I just installed Time Capsule and my the airport signal is successfully being picked up by my MacBook, G5, as well as my other HP PC which has a linksys PCI card.
For some reason, my Dell PC is not able to find the airport signal when it is seeking available networks.
Perhaps this question should be put to a PC/Dell discussion board (if one exists). Thanks.

Here's a few more things to try...
    1. Create a New User Account
    - Create a new user account.
    -- System Preferences > Accounts
-- Click "+" to add a new account
    - Log off, then log back on with the new user account.
    - Try connecting with the AirPort after wake up.
    2. Run the Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions.
    - Try connecting with the AirPort after wake up.
    3. Turn off the Mac OS X Firewall
    - System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
    - Click the "Stop" button.
    - Try connecting with the AirPort after wake up.
    4. Move System Configuration Files (last resort)
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    - Go to /Library/Preferences
    - Move the SystemConfiguration folder and com.apple.networkConfig.plist file to the desktop.
    - Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder & .plist file back to it's original location.)
    - Try connecting with the AirPort after wake up.

  • Time Capsule can't find AirPort

    Hi there,
I have just got an airport to back up my Mac OS 10.6.8 and have successfully connected it to the WiFi, and it is seen through ststem preferences but I want to use it as a back up tool too and when I go through Time Machine it can't find the device - any help would be great!

It's A1470, air port time capsule 802.11 ac.
Bit worried that it's not safe or time machine as that is the exact reason I bought it and was recommended it in the apple store?!
That is fine.. it is just you posted airport, not Time Capsule.. and what most people mean by airport is the extreme.
    Next problem..
The TC must not be properly setup. Indeed it is not possible to setup an AC model TC or AE using 10.6.8 OS so please tell us how you set it up.
I have just got an airport to back up my Mac OS 10.6.8 and have successfully connected it to the WiFi
How?? The 5.6 utility in SL cannot do it.
Are you using an iphone/ipad with the latest airport utility.
Once setup the older OS should be able to use it.. but it cannot do the setup.
Let me suggest you give us more details.
A few screenshots helps no end.
What are you seeing in the finder and airport utility?
Does the TC show up in Finder?
You said you can see it in system preferences.. sorry but I am not sure how.. please screenshot that as well.
As a setup method.. if you really have joined the TC to the existing wifi (unless it is an apple router) that is the worst possible seutp.
Please plug the TC WAN port into the main router LAN port by ethernet.
Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • MacBook Pro can't find Airport Express

Just unwrapped an Airport Express in order to simply stream music from my MBPro through the AP Express connected to my amp. But the lap-top refuses to find it, what straightforward step am I missing?

Pull down the AirPort menu bar item on your MBPro and look for a network with a name like "Apple Network xxxxxx", where the x's are the last part of the "AirPort ID" of the AirPort Express.  If you see that, select it, then use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Express.

  • MacBook Pro can't find AirPort Express base station

My friend gave me an AirPort Express and I've set it up as a base station before. But the other day it was having problems and I reset it. Since then I have not been able to set up a base station. When I try to set up a new base station through the AirPort Setup Assistant I get the message "The AirPort Setup Assistant was unable to find your base station." I have tried soft resets, hard resets, and even factory resets, but I can't get the base station set up. Any suggestions?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I face a similar problem - the default name of the Airport Express is shown, Internet-Access works, but no way to administrate the Station - it is "not found", although it displays the name of it before. Frustration!

  • Windows Vista trouble finding airport base station

I recently bought an AirPort Extreme 802.11n. It was easily able to connect it to my mac, but when I try to connect it to my Windows Vista desktop computer, the base station in the airport utility software cannot be found. It finds the internet from the base station, but when I try to connect to it, it says windows cannot connect to the internet. I set up a linksys wi-fi usb, but it still cannot find the base station. The pc is only two years old. Please help.

I had the same trouble with my Vista pc. I had set it up on the Airport Extreme network, but did a firmware update and lost the PC connection. I rolled it back to the previous version, but it was still intermittent or not seeing the Airport at all. I went in to the Airport Utility and changed the Channel setting from Automatic to Manual and selected another channel. This worked and my PC could see the network OK and connect.
I'm still having trouble connecting to my MAC from the Vista Pc, but I can connect to the Vista from my MAC. Both can see the network/internet OK.

  • Can't find airport but all other computers do?

This is very similiar to a previous posting but no one has answered or given a solution.
Louis Jan, "I cannot access the Internet & the base station is working!", 07:31pm Aug 6, 2005 CDT
I have a wireless airport network in my home and I have three Mac's. One is a G4 PowerMac connected directly to the basestation and it works great. A G4 Laptop and is connected wireless and works great all the time. I have a iMac G4 that uses an airport card and it "use" to work all the time and now won't connect to the airport network.
I have reset just about everything and it is set up exactly like my laptop. I can sometimes restart it and get it will work for about 5-10 minutes and then it loses connection or it won't connect right from the start. I have also noticed that when this happens the system starts getting "clunky" and if I move my mouse down to the doc, the icons move slow or kind of clunky as well as opening folders.
The signal is great all the time and it shows everything should be in order but when I open Safari or any browser, I get a "server can not be found" message.
Help. I have reinstalled the system software, permissions, etc. Nothing seems to work.

Your problems are not at all similar to the discussion you quoted. In that discussion, the problem was with the Base Station (despite the choice of discussion title). On the other hand, you have a Base Station that not only works but also has a known working wireless interface, since another Mac can connect to it wirelessly without difficulty.
First thing to try - open up the problematic iMac and (a) pull out and reseat the Airport card as well as (b) pull out and reseat (FULLY) the Airport antenna cable connection to the card.
If this fails to solve the problem, my suspicion would be that you have a marginally defective Airport card inside this iMac. The only way to test it is to substitute it with a known working Airport card.

  • LapTop can't find Airport Express to play iTunes.

I’ve been using Airport Express 4.1.01 (installed Nov ’04)for the sole purpose of wirelessly playing iTunes thru stereo system which is in a different part of the house from my Dynalink Modem-Router. The Toshiba L/T I had been using was clogged and painfully slow to use so was cleaned up by using the recovery disk and it is now used by another family member but is not using AE.
I‘ve bought a new Toshiba L/T with XP Prof OS. Both L/Ts have wireless connection to the internet using a Dynalink Router/Modem (R/M)and share a printer – not via AE.
My system is similar to that on page 18 except L/Tops are connected wirelessly to R/M and the stero and AE in a different room from the R/M. I don’t expect to listen to stereo and browse net at same time.
When I attempted to install AE I got an error message “A later version of iTunes is already installed on this machine. Installation cannot continue”. Current iTunes is V7. However, when I clicked OK on the error message the AE Introduction Window with the 3 icons (Internet, Music and Printer) appeared and over the top of the AE window another error message. “An error occurred while trying to use the wireless internet system” and the Next button on the AE window was dimmed. Once I clicked OK on error window the Next button cleared and clicking it I chose the “Set up a new AE” option and next the “Create a new wireless net work network” option.
Despite the error messages both Airport Admin Utility and Airport Express Assistance are installed and scanning and rescanning give negative results. The Admin Utility opens the Base Station Chooser window with the left panel blank and the Base Station Information panel also blank. The Configure button disabled. I’ve done both sorts of resets and still nothing even though I’m doing this in the same room barely 2 metres from the AE and in the same position where everything had worker OK on my previous L/T.
I’ve even tried connecting my L/T to AE with an Ethernet cable and opened the AE Admin Utility. Still nothing and NO Tabs for either AirPort or Music Settings. Instead there are 3 Menu items – File, Base Station and Help as well as two buttons – Other and Rescan. I don’t have the information for the information asked by pressing Other.
When I attempted to update AE after downloading Airport V5.0.14 I was got the message “This update requires Airport V 5.0 to be installed. I can’t find V 5.0 to download if that is in fact the answer to my problems.
PLEASE! I desperately need help. Can’t remember this hassle when I set it up 2.5 yrs ago.

This seems to be a common problem on several threads lately. Everything is configured correctly.
The airport status is green. But iTunes does not show the speaker choice button.
It was working fine, but at some recent point it stopped and I can't get it back.
I have the same issue with two different Airport Express units.

  • How to find airport extreme in windows 8.1

My windows 8.1 64bit wont find my airport extreme model A1408

Are you using wireless or ethernet?
Ethernet is always to be preferred.. please plug the computer in by ethernet if possible even if you are using wireless.
Does the computer get a valid IP address from the AE?
Open the command window (which strangely has never been replaced to this point).. and type
ipconfig /all (find the IPv4 address for wireless and ethernet).
If they get 169.254.x.x address then it is self allocated and there is simply no connection.
If you get proper IP address then ping it, using the command
ping AEname or ping AEIPaddress (where you use the network name or network IPaddress of the AE).
Certainly if your AE is named
    Fred Blog's Airport Extreme
That is not a valid windows name.. so you should fix the names on your AE.. use names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Please install the airport utility for windows.. there is none specifically for win8 but the win7 version should load.
That improves things with bonjour and some extra files.
Windows can firewall off the AE as unknown device. Ensure the computer is in home location, not work or public. Ensure that if you have correct IP address and ping fails then simply turn off your firewalls.
If wireless still doesn't work.. welcome to the world of voodoo.. you can have driver issues.
Post back exactly what the wireless card is in the computer.
