Finder and application windows, become inactive after a few seconds
I just finished restoring a G4 from a disk crash, installed new disk drive and a clean OS X 10.3.9. Than I restored the user's home directory and all end user applications. I am not exactly sure when I noticed this behavior, but I performed the basic troubleshooting steps below already :
• Removed any third party System Control panel
• AppleJack complete routine
• Removed Finder plist
• Switched to another user, with same result
• Booted up in SAFE MODE, no change either
• Reviewed system logs and other logs, and found no hint to his problem
• Monitored Activity Viewer for unknown services running
About every 15 seconds, the foremost window becomes grayed out/inactive. Clicking on it makes it active again, and if you start typing anything, it will not complete, due to the window going inactive again.
I have researched the net, but found not similar issue reported.
So if anyone can shed some light on this, short of re-installing the OS, it would make my long day or night by now.
Thanks in advance.
Will I lose my emails I have on there? I have numerous client email files and can't afford to lose any of them. I do have everything backed up but I'm fearful of losing important client info. What if something happened during the back up and it doesn't have my files?

Any active window becomes inactive after 10+ seconds. This doesn't just affect the Finder. It makes it very difficult to type an email or post to this forum.
No matter what window I select with the mouse, it will become deselected in a few seconds. I've ruled out the mouse and the keyboard. I don't know of any settings that would cause this. Can anyone offer a solution short of reinstalling the OS. I just finished installing my apps from receiving this computer at work on Friday.I just reinstalled the OS, as Archive Install with Preserve User settings checked, without running System Update to 10.5.1. All is well now. Though I haven't run all of the installed apps since reinstalling. Some of my apps are not Universal Binary (ex. QuarkXPress 6, MS Office 2004, Adobe ImageReady CS2), though that shouldn't be a problem. Right now I will be ignoring the 10.5.1 update.

Hi there,

When I power up my Imac, I see the white screen and the apple icon. After a few seconds the screen goes dark. I am able to still see the mouse arrow as I move it around. But nothing else. What is the problem and how do I recover?
Try this from another user:
1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds
2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving
3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.
4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball
5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping). -
Window turns green after a few seconds -Help-
Ok, I'm certain that my qt drivers are up to date. Whenever I try to play ANY video file in qtplayer, the window does this really strange panning of green until its entirely full. Then the player freezes and the audio gets real choppy. I've got no choice but to close it out (which i can only do from the task manager) and try to boot the player again. Does it every time and I can't watch but a few seconds of video. I'd love some help with this pleeeease!
Green screen video (as opposed to a normal video playback) nearly always indicate a problem with the video card or its drivers.
There really isn't a QuickTime driver. -
Brush strokes become jagged after a few seconds
I've tried just about everything to narrow down and eliminate this problem, with no luck.
When I first start PS and paint a line with a simple hard round brush, it's nice and smooth. After about 15 seconds (or 4-5 lines), the lines become jagged. They're not pixely - it's more like what happens if you have smoothing turned off. The effect is more pronounced when I paint zoomed out, as if the input data is constrained to the zoomed out pixel size.
This is not a tablet problem - it happens with the mouse as well.
It does not happen with the lasso selection tool, so it seems limited to the brush tool.
Here's an image showing a series of brushstrokes, going from left to right. You can see how the stroke quality degrades from the first stroke (on the left) which is nice and smooth, to the strokes on the right which are jagged. You need to view the image at 100% to see what's happening clearly.
The fact that this problem doesn't appear when I first start the program, then creeps in, is really perplexing! Once it starts it never goes away. What does your system look like. To tell you the truth I don't seem to be having any of the problems you are having with the mouse or Wacom pen. I don't like installing Plug-in I have no intention of using. Particulart Photoshop Plug-in for I keep plug-ins outside any Adobe folder and plug-installers a tend to install the plug-in in every version of Photoshop they find installed. I just download a trial of LN and after it installed I removed all the plug-in it installed into different version of Photoshop one my system. I copies the 32bit and 64Bit plug-ins into my Photoshop plug-ins trees. My windows workstation is good but not top of the line good. I do not see the jitter you seem to be getting with or without the plug-in enabled, I'm no artiest all I can do is scribble fast and slow, I do not see bad jitter. Here is what my system looks like and what I see when I scribble fast and slow.

New iPod Nano 6th generation just got it going today. It is fully charged but shuts off a few seconds into a song, what do I do?
I received mine yesterday as replacement for 1st generation and yes I had exactly the same problem.
I don't think it is anything to do with headphone plug [jack].
I played around with the settings and have just managed to listen to three hours without problem.
Music settings; shake to shuttle off, sound check off, double click - play/pause, audio cross fade and group compilation on. Can't be all these but trial and error as to which one - unfortunately it came without instructions.
The only other thing was that I had it in pocket while i was moving whereas yesterday I was sat at desk with nano at rest.
iPod nano, Mac 10.6.8 -
Finder and application windows moving in and out rapidly.
I was on hulu last night on my macbook and all of a sudden all the widow started moving in and out of the screen rapidly. There was nothing I could do to make it stop. Nothing was on the keyboard. Nothing I did with the track pad did anything. I shut it down and let it cool off. It gets pretty hot after an evening of running flash on hulu. After a restarted it it was fine for a while then started again. Has anyone else seen this problem?
Do you have the correct version of Flash Player installed for your OS version (if your profile is correct)? Also, it would help to update your profile with the model of your MB (processor, RAM, etc).

IBooks application is not working properly!! It shuts down immediately after opening .I tried installing the app. Again and still the same problem!!
Will I lose my emails I have on there? I have numerous client email files and can't afford to lose any of them. I do have everything backed up but I'm fearful of losing important client info. What if something happened during the back up and it doesn't have my files?

My mail application keeps shutting down after a few seconds
I am all of a sudden having this issue with my email quitting unexpectedly and I can't have it open long enough to even read an email or see what emails are there. I need to see my email folders and can't access them please help!
I ran the report and it appears is thread 21 that is crashing. I tried repairing disk permissions and that did nothing to help. What is causing this and how do I fix it?

Please help. My daughter has updated her iPad with iOS 6.1.3 and it now keeps crashing after a few seconds use..we have tried a rest and this doesn't help. Thx
From iPhone: Hardware Troubleshooting - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
[Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off]
1. Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
2. Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
3. Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
4. After at least 15 minutes, if:
-The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
-The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
-Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
5. If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
-If the display turns on, go to step 4.
-If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service. -
Video freezes after a few seconds
This is actually a continuation of a post I made almost a year and a half ago, trying to get video chat going so my mom can visit with her grandkids. The thread has been archived, so I can't post there but in case it helps here's the address:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1658017&tstart=0
We are both running Tiger 10.4.11 and iChat AV 3.1.9 (v446), although she's on a 1.25 GHz G4 with 1.5 GB of RAM, and I'm on a 1.8 GHz iMac G5 with 1 GB of RAM. We both have the exact same videocamera, Canon Elura 70, attached via Firewire. Both computers recognize the cameras fine, no problems there.
Anyway, my sister and I have tried 1,000 different things but nothing works. I can always see her but not hear her, and the connection is dropped after a few seconds, saying there's insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference. She can't see me at all, but she can hear me. The chat usually ends with error -20 and sometimes -22. For instance, here's the log from our try today:
*2010-01-29 11:49:30 -0600: No data has been received for the last 10 seconds.*
*Audio channel info: local machine using 10.0.1.3:16386, expecting remote machine to send to 97.83.147.78:56754*
*Video channel info: local machine using 10.0.1.3:16384, expecting remote machine to send to 97.83.147.78:56752*

The thing is, we can video conference successfully (video and audio) with each other from separate rooms if we're both at her house, as well as from separate rooms when we're both at mine. However, when we're each at our own home, it won't work. She's got a download speed of 8.5, and mine is 8.3. Her upload speed is 1.01 and mine is 1.74.
I am connected through a router - SMC Barricade (SMC7004VBR), and a WebStar modem. We've both taken the tape out of our camera, set our bandwidth limit in iChat to none. System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming is at 1.5Mbps. I've learned how to access my router settings but I don't see a DoS or SPI setting. It shows firewall features are disabled.
We've also tried to connect with Skype instead, and I was able to see my sister without it freezing. But she couldn't see me, so it still didn't fully work.
I'm totally at a loss. Any ideas?
Edit: Forgot to say her modem is an Ambit U10C018.
Message was edited by: laburkeWow, thank you so much for the detailed response. I'm actually feeling a little bit of hope that we might get this figured out eventually!
iChat 3.x at both ends.
Can Login and show Buddy Lists
Can Send Visible Invites.
Can Start Video Chat but something says the Bandwidth is then not good enough.
Error Message.
All true, except she has never been able to see me unless we're both in the same my house.
The Intranet /LAN setting in Tiger for iChat 3 also returns Odd figures to
iChat so we have long said set it to 1.5Mbps which your last post says it is.
I take it you must have restarted iChat f not the Mac(s) since you changed
this setting ? (Just covering all bases)
Right.
Have you changed the range the SMC uses to miss the range the modem is using ?
The only change I've made to anything recently is in iChat prefs: Under Accounts - Server settings, I changed the top port to 443 because regular iChat kept disconnecting at odd times and I read somewhere that it might help. But we had this AV problem long before that, and after.
I see the SMC cannot Forward enough ports for iChat but Can do UPnP
(Universal Plug and Play)
Is it set to do UPnP ?
I don't see anything that says UPnP. It says:
GATEWAY
IP Address: 192.168.2.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP Server: Enabled
Firewall: Disabled
On the Port Forward site there are two WebSTARs listed under
Scientic Atlanta
DO you have either of these ?
No, it is a DPC2100.
I could also do with seeing an old log of an Error 20 log.
They are stored in You Home Folder/Library/Logs/iChatConnectionErrors
Can you post the bits down and only down to the line that starts "Binary Images for iChat"
Pasted at bottom of this post.
Can you tell me if there is a Wifi and Ethernet connection to the Router ? (at > the same time )
My husband's PC is connected to the router via Ethernet. The only other things connected to it are the modem and my Airport Express so I can get online with my Macs. (I used to have the iMac connected by Ethernet before I realized I had an Airport card. Duh.)
Thanks so much for your patience and help!

Stor.E access point stops working after a few seconds
Purchased a Stor.E Wireless Adapter and followed instructions but after turning the device on by connecting to USB power using supplies cables, WIFI access point disconnects after 4 or around seconds.
1. i connect the device to usb power
2. Power light blinks green and stays on
3. wireless light becomes green and stay on, turns off after a few seconds
Managed to connect to it using the mobile app a few times, while its on, but since the WIFI point disconnects, cannot use it.
Any thoughts ?1. i connect the device to usb power
The Stor.e Wireless Adapter should be connected to mains power and the other end to the external HDD.
Then you could use the app to access the content wirelessly. -
Skype on Mac crashes after a few seconds
Hi, so a couple weeks ago I was trying to use skype and it just kept crashing after a few seconds of me opening it. I've tried reinstalling it, updating it, updating my computer, nothing has worked. If I'm actually able to call someone it's fine, but otherwise it just crashes on me.
Hi Ruby,
are you using the latest Skype version 7.7? It was just released yesterday.
If it's still crashing for you on 7.7, then could you attach your crashlog to this thread?
Thanks,
Rene -
Firefox tabs close when I simply click on a tab and windows become unresponsive after I launch a site. I am using the latest version for MacOSX but this happened a couple days ago with an older version of Firefox as well. Is this some kind of bug? How do I fix this bug? Have already tried a bunch of things like clearing/reinstalling etc. This does not help.
