Finder and finding your device

Would like to know if it's possible to make sure your devices - a USB drive in this case - shows up in devices every time it's connected .  I don't know why but finding my external drive is hit or miss in that column and it drives me crazy.   Finder seens to want me to play hide and seek.  I've googled and I know I'm not the only one who can't find their device sometimes.  Did read all the answers but not convinced any of them will solve the problem for good.   I know you have to tick external devices in preferences.   I'm wondering if it's the port itself not reporting to Finder - lol .  Can't think of a better way to put it, sorry - not into tech and newbie to Mac.
May I also ask if it is possible to keep Finder's opening page in front of you so you don't need to go back and forth to the dock?
Appreciate your time.

You are most likely using a secure internet connection that is being exposed in Oak Harbor. One way to test this out is to open up Maps and click on the cross hair target in the bottom left and it should do as you described. Another way to verify is if you visit http://speedtest.net (on your computer, not the iPT) and see where your location is (marked as the person). If your location says the same thing, you are most likely behind a secure connection (such as VPN) or using dynamic IP addressing.
I also think that the location goes based off what you registered your iTunes account home location as because when I used a free locating service called DNDetails (http://dndetails.com/location.php) to find my IP's location on the map, it would always pull up another town miles away.

  • HT5694 When a Ipad is registered the "Valid Puchase Date" is checked. It says this enables Apple to locate and update your device.Question, when Ipad is stolen Apple should be able to locate the Ipad??? How many Iproduct owners would pay for this service?

Valid Purchase Date claims to find and upgrade your device. Why when stolen cant they find it????

All the thief has to do is turn off your location services and the you can not track it, even with the new update you can lock your iCloud but you still can't lock the location services. Thief throws the useless apple device away because you erase and lock your device, and you are out $300 - $3000 cause you still can't track your device!

Just for what it is worth - I am currently getting the same error "iTunes was unable to verify your device" when trying to restore my first-generation iPad. I restored it several times, even trying DFU mode - and each time, ultimately, I get the same message as the original poster in this thread. I have had this iPad since it was originally released, and have never run anything on it but standard iOS, I would not know how to begin jailbreaking or hacking an iPad anyway. It was working just fine yesterday. Then I decided to upgrade and to give this iPad to a friend, so I wanted to wipe it and restore. I wiped it, and now this. Very frustrating.

My iPad is listed but cannot be located now because it is not connected to Internet

You cannot lock or find the device until it comes online. You can schedule a lock sequence to be sent once the device is online. That's it. Furthermore, if whoever finds the device completely erases it, then even when it comes online you will not be able to track it.

  • Save and Protect your iPad Device: How to Save and Prolong the battery life of your new ipad

Please, as you read add more answers to this on how to prolong and save your ipad battery life. Thank you
Saving the battery life of your iPad
1.Keep Your iDevice Out of the Sun
Whatever you do, don’t leave your iPhone or iPod sitting in a hot car—heat kills batteries faster than any other factor, and your device that used to keep a charge for hours will eventually barely hold a charge, and you’ll have to pay Apple to get it replaced. The same thing holds true for any really hot environment: try and store your device in a cool place.
    Reduce the Screen Brightness
If you keep the screen at maximum brightness all the time, you’re wasting a lot of battery life—and the screens these days are so bright anyway that you don’t really need to, especially at night. Head into Settings -> Brightness & Wallpaper to adjust the default level of brightness, which you can probably keep as low as 30% most of the time.
    2. Make Sure the Screen Locks Quickly
Even if you’ve adjusted the screen brightness, there’s still no substitute for having it turn off quickly when you’re not using it. Head into General -> Auto-Lock to set the screen lock to happen as quickly as your device will let you. This makes a big difference if you are always picking up your phone and putting it back into your pocket without turning the display off.
    3. Use Airplane Mode When You Don’t Need Internet (iPad/iPhone)
If you’re busy spending the next 8 hours playing Angry Birds, there might not be a good reason to have internet access, so you can consider using Airplane Mode, which turns off both Wi-Fi and the regular wireless radio. Of course, this will prevent phone calls if you’re on an iPhone—but if you’re busy with Angry Birds you probably don’t want the interruption anyway.
    4. The more important reason to use Airplane Mode is when you’re mobile in an area with a really spotty connection—because the iPhone or iPad will try to stay connected at all times, it’s going to be constantly searching for a connection, which can drain your battery. Head into Settings and flip the Airplane Mode switch right up at the top of the screen.
Use Wi-Fi Instead of 3G if Possible
According to Apple, the iPad will get 10 hours of battery life under regular use with Wi-Fi enabled, but will only get 9 hours using 3G—the iPhone gets 6 for 3G and 10 for Wi-Fi. Of course, if you’re heavily using the Wi-Fi, you’ll still be draining the battery—the point is under similar workloads, Wi-Fi is better than 3G for battery life.
You can enable Wi-Fi under Settings -> Wi-Fi, and then pick the network you’d like to connect to.
    5. Reduce or Eliminate Mail & Calendar Checking
If you’ve got a bunch of email, calendar, or contact accounts configured, and they are all being checked and downloading email on a regular basis, you’ll be draining the battery an awful lot faster than you need to.
Head into Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Fetch New Data and change the setting to the least frequent check possible. If you don’t use it often, you can just turn Push off entirely and then manually check when you need to.
    6. Reduce or Eliminate Push Notifications
Do you really need notifications from Twitter or whatever other apps you’re running? You can turn these off one-by-one, or turn off Push entirely by heading into Settings -> Notifications, and save a bit of extra battery life since your device won’t be pulling in data for those applications anymore.
    7. Reduce or Eliminate System Sounds
This one is probably a little silly, but if you really don’t care for the system sounds you can save a small amount of battery life by removing the sounds. A very, very small amount, most likely. Head into Settings -> General -> Sounds to change them.
    8. Disable Location Services
If you don’t really need the location services, you can disable them to save some battery life. Head into Settings -> General and flip the Location Services setting to off.
    9. Disable Bluetooth If You Don’t Need It
If you don’t use a Bluetooth headset or keyboard, you should keep the Bluetooth radio disabled to save some extra battery life. Head into Settings -> General -> Bluetooth to flip it on or off.
    10. Disable Vibrate Feature in Games
If you’ve got a game that uses the vibrate feature, you can turn that off to save some battery life. This mostly matters if the game heavily uses it, and you’ll need to change the setting for the game. As a side note, and it should go without saying, if you’re running really intensive video games, they will kill your battery very quickly.
    11. Charge and Discharge Your Battery Regularly
Your iDevice needs to be fully discharged and recharged at least once a month to operate at maximum efficiency and keep the battery from dying. You’ll also want to make sure that you don’t store the device with a dead battery, as that can also cause the battery to lose charge capability—when your battery dies, make sure to recharge it quickly.

The reason that Apple suggests you drain and recharge your battery once a month is not because it affects the life ofthe battery. What it actually does is calibrate the battery sensor, giving you a more accurate reading.
Other than that, you done an admirable job of summarizing the Knowledge Base article:

  • If you jailbreak your device what are the chances of bricking your idevice

I just need to know what the chances are

    @steve359
Yes. Apple will not support you in anyway if you encounter a problem with the device. Like IIIaass said, it voids the warranty, violates the licence agreement. Also, you could encounter a "re-spring loop" where your deivce continues to restart the SpringBoard. Also, your device will be slower and will not last as long as a device running iOS, and the reason for this is when Apple made the OS, it did not push it to what the device can handle, but when jail broken, you push it to the limit. Also, the battery will drain way faster and you will find yourself at the outlet more often. Also, to answer your question about bricking, it isn't likely unless your running iOS 5.1. There is no untethered jailbreak for it, therefore you have to use a computer everytime you turn the device totally off. When on a tethered jailbreak, if the exploit fails (which it does if you don't enter DFU mode correctly), you have to restore the device using iTunes, and sometimes iTunes cannot restore. So, I strongly suggest you DO NOT jailbreak. Apple has these restriction for a reason. Oh, I will also add that when your iOS device is jail broken, hackers can remotley log in, and control your device. Also, your installing third-party software that hasn't been vetted by Apple, so you don't know if your downloading malicious software that can crash your iPod and worse. So I really, really don't think you should do it, because if somethings goes wrong, don't come here, or to Apple.

  • "iTunes was unable to verify your device" after succesfully completing recovery mode on iPhone 4

I have an iPhone 4 which has never caused me any problems, until i updated to iOS7 it started lagging and battery didn't even last until midday (having it charged 100% in the morning!).
In just a few days it turned off automatically and wouldn't turn on. I googled and solved it by pushing the two buttons together for about 10 seconds. iPhone revived, and all the data was intact though many people states it would've been erased.
The morning after, using my iPhone more carefully not to have it crash again, it crashed. 10 seconds wouldn't do and I gave up, until the day after I found by surprise that the battery had run out and it finally showed some sign of not being completely dead!
I connected the cable to iTunes and pushed the Home button before connecting the iPhone and it entered Recovery mode. Recovery mode was completed and the iPhone had to restart to complete the process. While completing I get the error message "iTunes was unable to verify your device, please disconnect and reconnect your device". And from here I don't get anywhere, so I will probably visit Apple Store and ask what can be done, but if anyone has had the same problem please share any possible solution to this problem!

I had to contact Apple Store and make an appointment. They tried the last step suggested (which I had already tried three times) and stated that the memory had failed. They said it probably failed due to having some small issue already on the phone and then updating to a new iOS.
They could only offer me an exact copy of my iPhone but new for 149€.

  • "iTunes was unable to verify your device" error

    Hi,
I have a first generation iPad that has been working just fine. I decided to give it away, and so I wiped it and set about restoring it to factory defaults.... except, now I keep getting the error "iTunes was unable to verify your device. Please disconnect and reconnect your device. If the error persists, see your local Apple store for assistance." Well, the error is persisting despite disconnecting, reconnecting, attempting to restore several times, attempting to use DFU mode, no matter what I do, I get this error. I did see in a different forum, someone said this suggests the iPad was jailbroken or hacked in some way. So, just for clarity here - this iPad was never running anything except standard iOS. Anyone have any ideas?

Apple's activation servers are down at the moment.  Try again in a few hours (or even tomorrow).
