Finder and Windows Explorer Functionality to be 'Merged'

Right, before I start what I expect will be an epic battle, this is not what I intend this thread to entail...
I have recently moved from being a purely windows user (Software Developer), to using OS X as well. My girlfriends study dictated that I recommended her buying a Mac. Consequently, her inexperience dictated that I should learn OS X in order to be her technical support. Everything until earlier this week was great, but I'm still a lover of the OS.
The aforementioned 'until earlier this week' has caused one major usability gripe with which I have now read up on exstensively; the way that finder handles copying folders.
Now to a certain extent I see why it was slightly naieve of me to think that copying a folder should ONLY replace the files within and not the whole folder, but thats because I have grown up basically Windows only.
So I copied the folder structure (containing organised subfolders) of ALL of my girlfriends university work to date across to the Mac and misinterpreted what the copy would do, it turns out that this replaces the whole folder, and does not move the original folder to trash.
AND NOW TO THE POINT OF THIS THREAD...
As I began, I do not intend this thread to be a Windows vs Mac rantfest. I would merely like to rally up who can see the benefits of merging the way that OS X replaces the whole folder with the Windows options to only replace files within (merge).
This would then allow the possibility of easily copying folders with nested sub-folders (a la windows), but also allow the original method of replacing the destined folder (keeping with the mac tradition).
I don't want to go down the route of 'but every other OS merges folders' because this isn't every other OS, its OS X, and it seems that everything else that they have done, they've done well!
If the proposed could be implemented, not only would it allow more options for existing Mac users, but also allow a smoother crossover for users from other OS's
Perhaps something like below could work.
'The folder <folder name> already exists, do you wish to replace this folder, or merge its contents with the current folder?'
|| Replace || || Merge || || Cancel ||
As I am no expert of usability, the wording above should probably be changed.
Given enough interest (and perhaps a little understanding from long term mac users ;o) ) I wish to inform Apple of this thread so we will all get the best of both worlds (and I won't have a nagging girlfriend with much lost work).
I look forward to your interest/comments (but please keep it nice).

A slightly different angle of approach here can be viewed by how I think Superduper operates. Superduper has a really smart update function in its cloning. It will when updating the clone look for files on a bit by bit basis and see if there are changes to any specific file. If it sees changes, it will ensure that the files that are changed on the original get updated on the clone. It will ensure the files that are deleted on the original get deleted on the clone, and it will ensure that the files that are added on the original get added to the clone when the update is performed.
Now here in is the problem. Some users actually want OLDER versions to be preserved on their backup but not the original when they copy to the archived backup. We've seen here people are complaining that their archived backup is not preserved by Time Machine:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6107525#6107525
So the problem we are faced with here, is there are different needs for different people when copying files. While some are happy just to maintain a current copy of their files, others wish to manage archives when copying files. So a merge function would have to include the caveat of what does not get preserved when the merge happens. In the face of trying to be simple, you can't be all things for all people. As a freelance technician not working for Apple, I can just say, it probably is best for the user to see how an effort has been made to simplify the process, and work around it if necessary to achieve your needs.
I've used Windows 2000 and XP Pro and know it asks me whether or not to replace each file that is identical each time I copy from one folder to another when the names are the same. This is a laborious process, saying OK, cancel, ok, cancel if it is done indefinitely. I can see the dialog box asking:
"Do you want to replace all older files, some older files, with newer files of the same name, or do you want to replace newer files with some older files of the same name?"
A new computer user would go "Huh???"
Merge is nice for those of us who can keep track of it in real life.
For the rest of us who are organizationally challenged, or time challenged, we just want it done right the first time. Unfortunately neither Apple, nor the computer can read everyone's mind.
I agree a merge function would be nice, but I think it would overly complicate matters.

    Hi,
assuming action.do is the action method of ....../folder1/abc.jpf you can try out this in the test1.jsp,
    function openNameHistory(url) {
    var args = "<%= request.getContextPath() %>/folder1/"+url;
         window.showModalDialog(args,'','dialogHeight:320px;dialogWidth:600px;scroll:yes;status:no');
    <netui:anchor href="javascript:openNameHistory('action.do')">Name History</netui:anchor>
u need not specify the abc.jpf in the url because , workshop allows only one jpf per folder
    hope this helps...

  • Ipod freezes itunes and windows explorer

I have been trying to connect a new 30G Ipod to my Vista computer and everytime I do both Itunes and Windows Explorer freeze. Neither recognize my ipod. I tried to change the drive designation but couldn't because of Explorer freezing. I did run the same Ipod on my XP and everything worked fine so it is a problem with my Vista computer or with the ITunes (7.2.035) software. Any ideas?

  • What is Finder and it's function ?

    What is Finder?

The Finder is the default file manager used on Mac OS and OS X operating systems. It is responsible for the overall user-management of files, disks, network volumes and the launching of other applications. Finder acts like the shell on other operating systems, but using a graphical user interface, and is described in its 'About' window as The Macintosh Desktop Experience. It was introduced with the very first Macintosh computer, and also existed as part of GS/OS on theApple IIGS. It underwent a complete rewrite with Apple's switch to a UNIX-based OS in OS X.
The Finder is the first application a user interacts with after logging into a Mac. One could compare it to Windows Explorer in Microsoft Windows, the Tracker in BeOS, Nautilus inGNOME, and Dolphin or the file management aspect of Konqueror in KDE.
The Finder maintains a view of the file system that is rendered using a desktop metaphor – that is, the files and folders are represented as appropriate icons, volumes are displayed on the desktop, and there is a trash can (on the Dock in OS X, on the desktop in previous versions) to which files can be dragged to mark them for deletion.

  • Adobe Bridge overrides Windows Explorer functions?

Since installing Adobe Bridge CS3, I am unable to rename/copy/move folders within Windows explorer...If I want to do it, I have to use Bridge.
This is particularly annoying when new folders have to be renamed/copied/moved within OTHER programs. Example: I am processing a photo or piece of video in Nero or Quicktime and create a new folder to place the processed images/videos. I can not name that folder while within Nero or Quicktime nor can I rename it if I exit the program and use Windows Explorer. I HAVE to open BRIDGE and do it there....
    Help?

Perhaps it is something with NEro or Quicktime. Make sure they are both the latest version. There has been some conflicts with Quicktime and Bridge in previous QT updates.
I have Vista and have no problems with have not experienced any problems like you describe with Windows Explorer. I usually use WS rather than Bridge for deleting, copying, moving. I have experienced some problems with external drives and permissioning problems when using Bridge, but starting Bridge in administrative mode solved that. Right click on Bridge icon and choose "Run as Administrator".

  • Cannot log into T61 from remote computer with wired network and Windows Explorer.

    Hi,
    I am using a T61 7662-cto with Windows 7 Professional
When the T61 is connected on the home network with the wired network, I am not able to log into it remotely from another computer. On my second computer, I see the T61 with Windows Explorer but instead of getting the login window, it appears a Network Error with the message:
“Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network.” With a error code 0x80070035, “The network path was not found.” I tried the “Diagnose” button but it doesn’t give solution.
When the T61 is wireless connected, there is no problem. I can access it from my second computer.
I never have problem to connect to the second computer from the T61 with any connection type . I just updated the Intel Wireless LAN (bg, abg, abgn) for Windows 7 – ThinkPad, with the drivers required but it changes nothing.

  • Classic 160GB, Itunes and Windows Explorer all disagree on how much space is on the Ipod

    Hi,
I restored and resynced my Ipod Classic 160GB (about 2.5-3 years old) to see if it would help a problem I was having when plugging it into my stereo receiver via USB (the receiver was only recognizing it for four or five songs, then losing the connection).
It took a long time to restore the Ipod, due to the size of the collection and the number of MP3s that I had it convert to AACs.
The Ipod, which had had the exact same songs on it before with 2.7 GB left over, now claimed to have only 53 MB of empty space.  Looking at the drive in Windows Explorer, it had 2.6 GB.  In Itunes, the Ipod appeared to be 6 GB OVER its capacity.
So I took a chance and defragged and optimized the drive.  It made it better, but not fixed:
Now, the Ipod claims that it has 2.3 GB of empty space remaining; looking at it as a drive in Windows, it appears to have 2.6 GB remaining; Itunes, however, claims that the Ipod is totally full (2.5 GB OVER CAPACITY), so it won't add the final 3,000 songs or so to my Ipod.
I know that this all fit on the Ipod fine before the restore - with the same songs checked in my library, I had 2.7 GB left over.
Also, now Itunes reads the Ipod and says that it has 12.6 GB (!!!) of "Other."  I have no video, no photos, no contacts on the Ipod or in the library - nothing other than music and album cover images.  There's no way that I'd have 12 gigs that I didn't know about.
Should I assume that the drive is dying?  Is there anything that I can do to make this better?
    Thanks for your help.

Also, does an Ipod running on Windows need the "metadata_never_index" file?  I don't remember this being on the pod until recently, and from what I've read it's a file for connection to Macs.

  • Ipod not recoginized in itunes and windows explorer but is charging

ok  here's the deal, like it says in the subject line, when I hook it to my pc it charges but isn't recognized by itunes or windows explorer.  I've already reset the ipod (by holding down center and menu button.) and I've already uninstalled and reinstalled itunes.  Just got done checking services.  The ipod service was set to manual, so I restarted it and changed it to automatic. Then I reset the ipod and plugged it back in, still no good?!?!?!?
Any ideas, besides something super drastic.  Thanks in advance

  • PC suite and Windows Explorer

    - I am using Windows Professional v2002 Service Pack 2.
    - I have installed Nseries PC Suite that came with my N95 8GB. (Have installed several of the other applications that came with this including Nseries LifeBlog v2.5, Nseries Content Copier, etc.
    - I can connect to the N95 fine to transfer photos, install applications, etc.
    - However, I cannot browse the data folder of the N95 from Windows Explorer. I used to be able to do this with the previous version of PC suite I had installed. I need this to be able to transfer log files from our Symbian application. All I can do at the moment is transfer pictures, etc, which is no use for development.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

Nokia has 2 versions of PC Suite:
The version which is dedicated to Nseries devices and Nokia Pc Suite 6.xx something that is more "generic" for any Nokia model (providing the phone can be connected to a PC).
The features are a bit different and Phone Browser is missing from NSeries Suite.
Both are updated on a regular basis, so maybe the messaging side a appear also in Nseries version, but I too use the more generic version, main reason is that I have several phones (N95, E61 and 5300) and they all work well with Nokia PC SUite 6.8512, which I just updated 2 days ago from www.nokia.com/pcsuite

  • XMP and Windows Explorer

How can I set XMP data in a PDF file and display the data in columns in Windows XP Explorer?
I have tried pixvue from www.pixvue.com bit it only works for images - not PDF files.
    Any ideas?

    Greetings,
We have done such a tool,, it contains a windows explorer like clone, as well as a column handler for Windows explorer but it is in an alpha stage, so it may cause problems in certain cases. You can download the tool here:

We are currently working on a BETA version of the tool, that will hopefully be available soon.

  • Connecting iPod launches iTunes and Windows Explorer

Just curious. Is there any way to keep my iPod from launching Windows Explorer via Autoplay when connecting it to my PC via USB? Currently it opens an instance of Windows Explorer showing the contents of the iPod as a storage device and then about 30 seconds later launches iTunes as well. I'd like a succesful connection to launch only iTunes - and without the delay if possible.

  • Itunes and Windows Explorer crash when ipod attached

Hi, for some reason my ipod has started to crash both my laptop and my home desktop computer whenever i attach it. It shows up in Windows Explorer but if i click on the icon it crashes the window. Similarly, Itunes opens if i attach my ipod but then freezes straight away, but then if i take out my ipod it starts to work fine again. Im starting to think that seeing as this is happening on more than one computer it might be a fault with the ipod. Any ideas?!
O and it's a 120gb ipod classic and im using the most up to date itunes on vista.
    Thanks alot

Im starting to think that seeing as this is happening on more than one computer it might be a fault with the ipod.
I'm with you on that. By any chance do you have a spare USB cable (or have access to a different one)? If so, try experimenting with connecting using the other cable. Do you still get the freeze with that?

  • Zen Micro and windows explore

My computer DOES recognize my player because i can sync it with WMP or Winamp or even Mediasource. But what I cannot do (which i previously was able to do) is browse my player VIA Windows Explorer ie. My Computer. Any ideas?

    dudemag,
If you're not using firmware version 2.xx(PlayForSure firmware), the player won't show up in Windows Explorer as a device. If you're using firmware version .xx, install the Zen Micro Media Explorer software. The software will integrate with Windows Explorer so you can manage it from there.

  • I can't use the search function in both the Start Menu and Windows Explorer.

This problem occurred yesterday when I uninstalled a program on my computer. Once the program was uninstalled, everything was fine until I tried to search for a file in my start menu search bar. When I attempt to search for something, nothing comes up. Not
even a single document or piece of text. Nothing.
In other posts I've seen addressing the same issue that I'm having, people try to search something and a selection of files come up, like "Programs", "Documents", etc., except for me, it's all blank.
In other threads people have suggested to delete certain subdirectories in regedit, but when I go into regedit, and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
folder, there is no FolderTypes folder for me to delete. It's simply not there.
I've pretty much tried every possible resolution under the sun, apart from completely re-installing Windows 7. Please help me fix this issue, because at this point I'm
    lost.

Yes, sometimes, we can solve this issue by editing the registry entry you mentioned above, I have a suggestion, do you have a similar system or PC which is working fine? You can export this registry entry from that PC (which i sworking fine), then
import it to your problematic PC, please remember that incorrect change in registry will cause serious damage, so backup the registry first before editing.
After finishing editing the registry, restart PC. If doesn't work, open control panel\Indexing Options\Advanced, rebuild the index.
