Finder, Audacity, Switch & Peak Crashing

Hello all, new forum poster here, as I have had no trouble thus far!
I have a 17" Powerbook G4 1.67 ghz, running 10.4.11. A couple of weeks ago, Finder started crashing whenever I opened a folder in either Icon or List view. Column view is usually ok. It would freeze momentarily, all the desktop icons would disappear, and then would return. I looked at this thread, and tried some of the things mentioned. I do not have StuffIt installed, nor is there anything in my Login Items, or in the Contextual Menu Items.
As of yesterday, I started having severe problems with most audio related programs. Audacity, Switch, Peak LE, etc. They are all similarly crashing, almost always when trying to open a file, specifically not in Column view! I have tried deleting and reinstalling most of them. I have tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions. The only thing that did help some was creating a new user account. None of this seems to happen when I am i logged into the other account.
Any thoughts on this? I would GREATLY appreciate any help anyone can give! Forgive me if I am missing something further up on this thread!

Some item in my "location" part of the finder has switched language...

I recently noticed that, for a reason still unknown, some item in my finder has switched from french to english and I can't seem to switch them back. It may be because I've installed some freewares that were only in english. Anyway, does anyone here know how I could be able to put the "finder" back to its original factory settings ? I've tried the extension solution and the international-language solution and it doesn't work...

I am guessing that he means by "location" the names of main Finder Folders: Documents, Photo, Movies, Downloads etc. for sure this is my case.. when those names in finder windows on the left are in EN and the rest of OS X is in Polish. It happened after "maintaince of the OS by the IceClean.

HT204407 Find My Friends keeps crashing on startup - tried closing, resetting phone- everything but deleting. Suggestions?

Find My Friends keeps crashing on startup. I've tried closing, the double click on the Home & closing, restarting phone & restating phone. Can't log on to get to settings to troubleshoot. Any suggestions besides Delete? I've got 5 that I follow, and don't want to bother them with re-accepting to follow.

I had the same issue. I deleted the app and reinstalled. It solved the crashing and all my existing friends were still connected to my account (I did not have to re-invite them).

I have no idea what 'Ableton Live' is, but the thread that's crashing clearly references MelodyneRewireDevice,. A search on Melodyne turns up a slew of issues.

If you can't track it using find my phone.
Then report the lost to the local authority and your phone carrier.

Can I find out the peak of Output 1-2 without having to play whole track?

Can I find out the peak of Output 1-2 without having to play whole track? I am preparing my album for mastering and I was told to have each track peak at no more than -2dB. Is there an offline peak detector or maybe another trick people use?

You should deliver your mixes to the mastering house in 24bit format. They should be converted to 16bit and dithered AFTER the mastering. Also, as long as the mixes are not overloaded, the levels could be handled in mastering also. That's what mastering is about, matching the perceived levels between the tracks. As far as your last question, "Do you just slap a multipressor on the output at that point and call it mastered?" the answer is heck no. I'd suggest selecting some professionally mastered cds in your genre, and put a few into your "mastering song" in logic and use them to compare to your mixes. Play with the mastering tools (multi compressor, EQ, adlimiter, etc) on your tracks and try to bring them into the ballpark with the reference songs. It will take a while to get a handle on it, but with practice, it will get you there.

When I go into Time Machine, I see earlier dates but can't see files in my User File. I have File Vault turned on and see my home folder as a sparsebundle. Do I neede to restore this in order to see files in my home folder. When I click on it to restore it gives me an estimated time of over 2 hours. Also tried to restore an Excel file I was working on when computer hung, so lost it without saving or naming it. Does it exist anyplace and can I restore it?

Thanks. I had pretty much figured out from other posts that I had better turn off File Vault for my home folder and use a disk utility sparse bundel for little information I wanted to secure. The information about File Vault 2 in Lion was new and useful though.

Unplug the Apple TV then plug it back in, do the same for your router, then reset your iPad by holding down the home and sleep buttons, waiting for the Apple logo, then let go of the buttons.

We often find that the browser crashes and think it is to do with the flash player. Does anyone else find this are there browsers that are better in dealing with this?

I have had the same problem with my Iphone 4s. I have restored it several times and the issues comes and goes. I can be on a call or just openning a app and the screen will go dim. The only way for the backlight to come back on is for me to hit the power button. Its very annoying and I have not took it to apple yet because It does not stay dim.

Actually i want to run this algorithm real time,, to find out the peak position from graph ,, i need to generate the position automatically,,, firstly i try to use image processing by apply threshold followed by edge detection and the find out the center of each detected part. the drawpack of this procedure is that the obtained images are different and that lead to different threshold values,, so how can i directly find the position from the graph,,, here i attach the image and the graph of the image,,

here i will explain in more details: the main objective of my work is to calculate velocity of small particle,, i perform my experiments by exposing the particle to 2 light pulses,, and i know the time between the two pulses,, so i need to know the distance to calculate the velocity,,, for that i apply correlation,,, the spot that appear in the correlation image is an indication of symmetry,,,so i should know the location of maximum intensity of each peak. The central peak (highest intensity) will be the reference (zero point) and the other peaks locations should be subtracted from the reference peak to determine the shift,,,
Here is the sequence of the process:
Acquiring raw image, correlation, position of central peak, shift calculation, velocity determination,,,,,
applying image processing is good idea in case of post processing condition,,, but in my case i need it real time, that mean if i need to apply image processing for calculation, i have to find out a universal criteria for threshold value that can be applied for all raw images,, from my experiments i didn't find specific criteria & i have to manually change the threshold value,,
If I choose the intensity (grey level) to be the criteria, then the small peaks (symmetry) will not take place,, because their intensity is very low compare to the central peak,,,
So the most reliable procedure is to directly find out the position of the two small peaks beside the central peak and save this values into an array and use it for calculation,,, I hope I am clearly explain my problem..

Finder, Doc, Application switcher all crash in 10.5.2

A few weeks ago I noticed that my lower ram slot in my Powerbook G4 15" 1.3G stopped reading the ram. I did a quick search and found that there was a recall for a similar problem in other powerbooks. I thought I could get away with buying a 1G chip and installing it in the upper slot. This worked for about a day.
I also recently downloaded the most recent security updates and printer updates and whatever else...
I'm not sure any of this is related.
Here's my problem now... My computer starts up fine, although it looks like the blue screen is up at startup for a few more seconds than it used to be. I then have a window of 1-5 minutes to work. During this window of time I can open applications (mostly Word, Excel, Firefox), work in them, switch between them, etc...
Every time after 1-5 minutes I stop being able to switch between applications and the menus in the menu bar stop working (the headers are visible, but nothing happens when they are clicked). When I push command-tab to switch I get an alert noise and application switcher does not come up. If I click on an open window for a different application or even the finder, it does not switch. When I click on other applications in the doc they do not open.
If I quit the one application that is allowing me to work in it, my menu bar disappears, and my computer is crashed. The ONLY way to get out of this, once it happens, is to hold down the power key and do a hard reboot.
Any help would be appreciated. I am completely stumped and want to hold onto this computer for as long as I can.

I am suspicious that your hard drive is bad. Can you boot from the OSX DVD and run some of those apps normally? Tried the Apple hardware Test (AHD) from the OS DVD?
If you had a clone of your internal drive on a Firewire external drive, you could boot from that to test. If you don't, I recommend you do as a backup of all your data as well as a trouble shooting tool.

You sure have an interesting cluster of problems! It sounds like the laptop can boot up and get started, then at some point it runs into trouble with available ram. The bad ram slot might suggest a serious problem with the logic board. Your ram chip could also be bad. Do you have an original ram chip to swap out and test? Do you have the hard ware test CD that came with the machine?

Installed the latest update and now Finder refuses to start/crashes

Hey guys,
I just installed the latest 10.4.11 update or whatever, along with Quicktime, iTunes, etc., and now when I log in to any account, Finder refuses to start. If it does start, it crashes.
I've googled around and all I could find was that I should switch from one Admin account to another to stop it, but that looked outdated and didn't work anyway.
I'm on a PowerBook G4, 10.4.11. Hopefully someone can tell me how to fix this soon.

Actually, I take double posting to mean you started the same Topic in two different placesat once!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

How to find max audio peak of combined audio tracks with effects applied?

Hello all,
I am working in PPro CS5.5.
Often when I am working on a timeline I have two audio tracks of the same songs, one from the camera and one from a separate sound recorder, synced on the timeline so they combine into one signal. Applied to these tracks I might have an E.Q. effect or highpass/lowpass filter. Now I know that the max peak of each track or individual clips is easy to find using the 'Audio Gain' menu item, what I am hoping for is the equivalent of that menu item but related to the final output after the two tracks signal has been added together and effects have been all been applied? It is a very laborious task to have to listen through the whole timeline to discover if the output is going over 0db, if there was a way I could locate on the timeline where the max output is, that would definitely solve the problem.
Finding the way to do this would save literally hours per project! It's the one thing that makes me inwardly groan when I have to effect the output volume, which I have to do most of the time.

I have found audio to be more difficult to learn than video. Audio has so much more subtlety, where perceptions don't always equate to what seems obvious. With multiple tracks adding together things get very complex very fast and peak amplitude has very little relationship to volume. When you compress a waveform the volume can be increased! Who'd have thunk it? Then you have S/N ratios and harmonics, soft clipping and hard clipping... Which brings me to the option on the Dynamics Effect called Soft Clip that is a smoother kind of limiter.
It's amazing where a simple one line suggestion can lead you; having worked a bit more with the dynamics 'effect' I am deciding that I like it a lot. The automation is not absolute but it broadens the tolerances I can work within. Very liberating!

How to find reason for system crash?

I have a test system running in VirtualBox environment and its crashing every now and then, sometimes two times a day but sometimes it lasts for 3 days before crash happens.

We can see from the following stack that the panic was caused by someone or some app calling uadmin(1M)

So the question is who/what. ::ptree will give you the process tree and you should see from that the execname responsible. What apps do you have running in this VBOX environment? Oracle RAC uses the uadmin interface because it doesn't have a failfast driver of it's own. There are several other applications who also use the uadmin syscall for similar reasons. Normally they panic the node/system because something has timed out and they need to restore cluster/system stability and integrity.
With regards to the step-by-step guide, no such document exists because it's impossible to write one. Each crash dump is different, each person does things slightly differently. What you need to do is understand how to use the tools (typically mdb or scat) and then start poking about in crash dumps. In fact you may find scat (Solaris Crash Analysis Tool) more user friendly and easier to learn than mdb. Unfortunately Crash Dump Analysis (CDA) isn't something that can easily be done via the forums. If you raise a service request it'll come to the Kernel group and we can then have a look for you.
