FINDER becomes UNRESPONSIVE during AppleScript runs in 10.6.5

Has anyone experiences the Finder becoming unresponsive when running a script in Snow Leopard? We have scripts that push PDFs to an Apple Server (10.4) via SMB or AFP and while the script does run fine- during the last minute of it running, the Finder and the AppleScript become unresponsive for 30-60 sec or so then snap back and finish their job.
This was not happening in Leopard (so they say) to the same Tiger Server
Any Ideas what we may be experiencing? A suggested Fix? is 10.6.7 going to resolve this issue with Slow SMB connections?

I have the exact same problem on two of my imacs, both have the 10.6.5 update and have been having networking problems since November of last year. I have pinged both IP addresses successfully so they are active.I have also tweaked the proxy settings for our network, trying all combinations, to no avail.
I have at least succeeded in getting one of the macs to connect to email and Safari but the connection in Safari times out after about 10 minutes and then hangs and you have to force quit. Thereafter only a reboot will restore Safari.
The second imac is in a worse state, in that it does not connect up at all even though the network is active and IP has been successfully pinged.

  • Why does the Yosemite Finder become unresponsive when moving a file within my USB Flash stick?

Why does the Yosemite Finder become unresponsive when moving a file within my USB Flash stick? I have to Relaunch the Finder to get it working again.
    Background / other symptoms:
The Flash drive in question has been formatted HFS.
I get no error messages, including on the Console, and no sound indicators.
I can copy files, using the Finder, from a hard-drive to the usb flash drive with no problem.
Finder copying on this stick works just fine on my other Mac.
I can move files within another (FAT32-formatted) USB flash drive.
The quirky USB HFS Flash drive works fine on my other Mac.
Outside of the Finder, I can use mv just fine to move the files on the HFS flash drive.
If the HFS-formatted Flash drive were faulty, I would at least expect some sort of error in the Console app, but perhaps not from the Finder.

  • IPad 2 screen becomes unresponsive during video playback

I just purchased an iPad 2, and one of the first disappointments I've seen is that the screen becomes completely unresponsive during playback of a video with the "Videos" App.  This happens after the video has been playing for several seconds.  Is there a fix to this problem?  My only recourse was to shut down the application; however, the problem is persistent.  This means there is NO control of video playback, i.e., pause, FForward, Reverse, Skip????  I have already updated my iPad 2 with the latest OS.  What gives???

What quite often works for people with problems with the Videos app are the following.
Try searching for the name of one of your videos on the iPad's spotlight search screen - swipe your first homescreen to the right, type in it's name, and if it finds it tap on it to see if it plays.
If that doesn't work then try closing the Videos app completely : from the home screen (i.e.not with the Videos app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Videos app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option if the two above don't work is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • GUI/Finder becoming unresponsive

I'm having a problem where I can't get the mouse-over actions to work. i.e. the dock won't pop up or go away (have to click at the bottom of the screen to get it to appear), the names of the applications don't come up as I move over them; up in menus, flyouts don't work at all unless I hold the mouse button down - all a change from a day ago.
My most recent system-altering actions were related to an install of Acrobat 7.0.7 Pro that stopped booting. I tried retrieving the app from Time Machine from a couple days back, when I know the app booted fine. No luck getting it to work. Decided it was time to upgrade anyhow, downloaded and installed Acrobat 8 Pro, which boots just fine - but the the GUI problems started.
    Any thoughts guys?

After completely reinstalling the system from a Time Machine backup made before the problem cropped up...I STILL had the problem.
Beginning to suspect hardware, I started troubleshooting be removing components. Well, it turns out the problem was my wireless mouse. It was apparently sending a button-down signal continuously. I replaced the mouse and all is fine again. I hope this helps someone in the future.

    Hi,
Some "movies' are actually Flash files.
This means the Flash App will play them (possibly in a browser in some cases).

A web page can include javascript.
Apple uses javascript here to help with creating the posting box, the Edit options, Adding pics/smilies and the like.
Sometimes the javascript can be what is called a runaway process and gets sort of stuck in an endless loop.
If it is a free standing item then it might be triggered by AppleScript on the Mac. (or be modified in some way)
Again if the Script (normally written with a upper case S) is not perfect it can cause problems.

  • Everytime I put my Mac Mini to Sleep, Finder becomes completely unresponsive.  How do i fix this?

    Hi,
Everytime I put my Mac Mini to Sleep, Finder becomes completely unresponsive.  I've tried several Terminal commands to kill/quit/relaunch it, but nothing seems to work.  Once my Mac has been put to sleep there is nothing I can do to get it back after I have woken it up.  I always have to restart my computer, and even then, I have to hold the power button to shut it down because it will never fully shut down from the restart.  I have a feeling that Finder is still running in the background and not allowing the mac to shut down.  I'd rather not have to reinstall my OS.  Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this problem?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Hi Andrew, what all is connected USB wise?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for Sleep/Wake problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

OSX now crashes every hour. For no obvious reason or trigger, suddenly OSX apps like Dock, desktops, launchpad, finder, toolbar, etc become unresponsive, although sometimes non OSX apps (like Chrome, TextMate, etc) remain functioning briefly, before the whole thing hangs and needs a hard reboot.
It is not apparent what I do to provoke the crash -- it happens while I am in seemingly any application, sometimes just reading a page and not taking any actions.
This started happening very suddenly two days ago. It might have happened around the time I updated ITunes but I'm not sure of this at all. And I never use ITunes or have it open.
Don't know how to diagnose the problem since nothing is accessible whence it freezes up on me.  I tried software update, but problem continued after. Would appreciate troubleshooting advice. Thanks!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Apple TV will stream music but will not connect to iTunes library to stream movies or podcasts.  During the unsuccessful connection process, iTunes becomes unresponsive and must be forced to quit.

Apple TV 3 will stream music via Home Sharing from iTunes on Mac running 10.6.8 but will not connect to iTunes library to stream movies or podcasts.  When trying to connect, iTunes becomes unresponsive and must be forced to quit.  ATV will stream movies purchased through the ATV but not those purchased through or ripped/copied onto the Mac.  I've tried fixes suggested for similar problems (rebooting ATV and Mac, signing out then back into iTunes Store) to no success.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is the most bogus example of Apple rip-off EVER.  They do not advertise this *feature* and yet expect people to invest in an Apple ECOSYSTEM?  My experience with Apple TV using a central media "server" (a dedicated Mac Mini) has been atrocious.  I continually get "Cannot connect..." messages and with typical Apple "it just works" mentality, there is no reason stated.  I HATE APPLE TV and I HATE APPLE.  Peddle your crapple somewhere else.

  • Why does Firefox on my Windows 7 PC hang (become unresponsive) while it waits for most pages to load or run scripts?

Firefox hangs (becomes unresponsive) when accessing many sites including Gmail. Eventually, when hung, Firefox will throw up a window saying "WARNING: A script has become unresponsive" or, in the case of Gmail, the page itself will say "Some Gmail features have failed to load due to an internet connectivity problem."
IE8 and Google Chrome are working normally. I've tried Firefox in safe mode, re-installing and even running Firefox portable from a USB thumb drive. Each time with the same result—Firefox hangs or becomes unresponsive while it waits for most pages to load or run scripts.

Your problem sounds like the one that a co-worker and I started to have about the same time. Check your Symantec client management control log. You might see a line like the following.

At first we thought that it was a Javascript problem until we noticed this log. The key words are 'Block' and 'FlashPlayerPlu'. This problem recently started for us, perhaps with a software push 1-2 weeks ago. Internet Explorer does not hang when accessing pages with Flash.
The Flash page does eventually load after a long time. However, since the whole browser hangs for a while, for the most part having the Flash plugin enabled makes Firefox unusable if accessing pages with Flash.
Disabling the Flash plugin solves the hanging problem, but I do not know what is causing the problem, nor do I know when a combination of Windows 7, Flash, and Symantec will work. Your later version of Symantec shows that we might have the problem for a while, but I do not know what customization CSC did with Symantec. My coworker did run a complete virus scan, uncovering nothing. Another co-worker is running Windows XP. She does not have the problem, but I do not know what other versions of software she is running.

A: my MacBook Air becomes unresponsive when logging in, and I decided to reinstall OS X Lion. When running the installer from OS X Recovery, it gave the error message "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."

I encountered the same exact problem when I attempted to re-installed OSX Lion on an old laptop. The date was set back in 2000, which rendered the certificate obsolete. Here's how I fixed it:
From the recovery menu, select the Terminal application. Run the 'date' command to confirm the date is wrong, then set the correct date using this command: date {month}{day}{hour}{minute}{year}
e.g. date 1219195613
Exit terminal (type exit). Retry the installation.

  • Process file becomes unresponsive when run on Lookout 6.7

    Hi,
The attached process file was developed using Lookout 6.1 which ran on a windows vista computer.  That setup ran flawlessly for many years until the computer started having problems.  I recommended that a new W7 computer be put into service to run the process.  After many attempts, Lookout 6.1 refused to install properly on the W7 computer (sql server service pack upgrade problem).  Anyway, I then recommended upgrading to the newest Lookout, which turned out to be Lookout 6.7.  While the purchase of software and hardware was underway, I pulled a W7 32bit computer with Lookout 6.6 out of its normal duty to run this process and it ran flawlessly.  Lookout 6.7 arrived and was installed in a new W7 32bit computer.  The process loads into 6.7 okay but after a while, Lookout 6.7 becomes unresponsive.  I've tried to figure out why it runs on 6.6 but not 6.7 but haven't been able to narrow it down.  I'm hoping someone can test the process to see if they have a similar experiece.  Any help or ideas would be appreciated.  p.s. the process will look kind of messy because you won't have some of my graphic images.
